Impact of ion mobility on nonlinear Compton scattering of an ultra-intense laser pulse in a plasma

We demonstrate that the nontrivial dispersion of a plasma driven by a high-intensity laser pulse qualitatively affects fundamental nonperturbative QED processes triggered by the laser pulse even in the case that no electrons remain in the interaction volume, e.g., due to ponderomotive expulsion. In the electron-free case this plasma effect is mediated by the response current of the residual ions as a dispersive effect on the laser propagation. The residual ions hence act as an effective background to the propagating electromagnetic laser field. We demonstrate that this has an impact on the fundamental nonlinear QED process of photon emission by an electron upon absorption of a large number of laser photons, called nonlinear Compton scattering. In two exemplary cases we find the ion plasma to suppress and enhance the photon emission rate by approximately $10\%$ for an intermediate and high laser intensity, respectively. The latter enhancement has no classical analog.

Quantum anti-quenching of radiation from laser-driven structured plasma channels

We demonstrate that in the interaction of a high-power laser pulse with a structured solid-density plasma-channel, clear quantum signatures of stochastic radiation emission manifest, disclosing a novel avenue to studying the quantized nature of photon emission. In contrast to earlier findings we observe that the total radiated energy for very short interaction times, achieved by studying thin plasma channel targets, is significantly larger in a quantum radiation model as compared to a calculation including classical radiation reaction, i.e., we observe quantum anti-quenching. By means of a detailed analytical analysis and a refined test particle model, corroborated by a full kinetic plasma simulation, we demonstrate that this counter-intuitive behavior is due to the constant supply of energy to the setup through the driving laser. We comment on an experimental realization of the proposed setup, feasible at upcoming high-intensity laser facilities, since the required thin targets can be manufactured and the driving laser pulses provided with existing technology.

Forward sliding-swing acceleration: electron acceleration by high-intensity lasers in strong plasma magnetic fields

A high-intensity laser beam propagating through a dense plasma drives a strong current that robustly sustains a strong quasi-static Mega Tesla-level azimuthal magnetic field. The transverse laser field efficiently accelerates electrons in the presence of such a field that confines the transverse motion and deflects the electrons in the forward direction, establishing the novel forward-sliding swing acceleration mechanism. Its advantage is a threshold rather than resonant behavior, accelerating electrons to high energies for sufficiently strong laser-driven currents. We study the electrons' dynamics by a simplified model analytically, specifically deriving simple relations between the current, the particles' initial transverse momenta and the laser's field strength classifying the energy gain. We confirm the model's predictions by numerical simulations, indicating Mega ampere-level threshold currents and energy gains two orders of magnitude higher than achievable without the magnetic field.

Nonlinear single Compton scattering of an electron wave-packet

Nonlinear single Compton scattering has been thoroughly investigated in the literature under the assumption that initially the electron has a definite momentum. Here, we study a more general initial state, and consider the electron as a wave-packet. In particular, we investigate the energy spectrum of the emitted radiation and show that in typical experimental situations some features of the spectra shown in previous works are almost completely washed out. Moreover, we show that at comparable relative uncertainties, the one in the momentum of the incoming electron has a larger impact on the photon spectra at a fixed observation direction than the one on the laser frequency.

Lighting up the Christmas tree: high-intensity laser interactions with a nano-structured target

We perform a numerical study of the interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with a nano-structured target. In particular, we study a target where the nano-structuring increases the absorption rate as compared to the flat target case. The transport of electrons within the target, and in particular in the nano-structure, is analysed. It is shown that it is indeed possible, using a terawatt class laser, to light up a nano-scale Christmas tree. Due to the form of the tree we achieve very strong edge fields, in particular at the top where the star is located. Such edge fields, as here located at ion rich spots, makes strong acceleration gradients possible. It also results in a nice, warm glow suitable for the holiday season.

Nonlinear double Compton scattering in the full quantum regime

A detailed analysis of the process of two photon emission by an electron scattered from a high-intensity laser pulse is presented. The calculations are performed in the framework of strong-field QED and include exactly the presence of the laser field, described as a plane wave. We investigate the full quantum regime of interaction, where photon recoil plays an essential role in the emission process, and substantially alters the emitted photon spectra as compared to those in previously-studied regimes. We provide a semiclassical explanation for such differences, based on the possibility of assigning a trajectory to the electron in the laser field before and after each quantum photon emission. Our numerical results indicate the feasibility of investigating experimentally the full quantum regime of nonlinear double Compton scattering with already available plasma-based electron accelerator and laser technology.

Nonlinear Compton scattering in ultra-short laser pulses

A detailed analysis of the photon emission spectra of an electron scattered by a laser pulse containing only very few cycles of the carrying electromagnetic field is presented. The analysis is performed in the framework of strong-field quantum electrodynamics, with the laser field taken into account exactly in the calculations. We consider different emission regimes depending on the laser intensity, placing special emphasis on the regime of one-cycle beams and of high laser intensities, where the emission spectra depend nonperturbatively on the laser intensity. In this regime we in particular present an accurate stationary phase analysis of the integrals that are shown to determine the computed emission spectra. The emission spectra show significant differences with respect to those in a long pulsed or monochromatic laser field: the emission lines obtained here are much broader and, more important, no dressing of the electron mass is observed.

Time-dependent Kohn-Sham approach to quantum electrodynamics

We prove a generalization of the van Leeuwen theorem towards quantum electrodynamics, providing the formal foundations of a time-dependent Kohn-Sham construction for coupled quantized matter and electromagnetic fields. Thereby we circumvent the symmetry-causality problems associated with the action-functional approach to Kohn-Sham systems. We show that the effective external four-potential and four-current of the Kohn-Sham system are uniquely defined and that the effective four-current takes a very simple form. Further we rederive the Runge-Gross theorem for quantum electrodynamics.

Determining the carrier-envelope phase of intense few-cycle laser pulses

The electromagnetic radiation emitted by an ultra-relativistic accelerated electron is extremely sensitive to the precise shape of the field driving the electron. We show that the angular distribution of the photons emitted by an electron via multiphoton Compton scattering off an intense ($I>10^{20}\;\text{W/cm$^2$}$), few-cycle laser pulse provides a direct way of determining the carrier-envelope phase of the driving laser field. Our calculations take into account exactly the laser field, include relativistic and quantum effects and are in principle applicable to presently available and future foreseen ultra-strong laser facilities.
