Higgs boson form factor effects in $t\bar t$ production by $W^-W^+$ and $ZZ$ fusion

We study the fusion processes $W^-W^+\to t\bar t$ and $ZZ\to t\bar t$ observable at a future $e^-e^+$ collider and we discuss their sensitivity to an $Htt$ form factor which may be due to compositeness, in particular when the $H$ and the top quark have common constituents. We make an amplitude analysis and illustrate which helicity amplitudes and cross sections for specific final $t\bar t$ polarizations are especially sensitive to this form factor.

Test of the triple Higgs boson form factor in $μ^-μ^+\to HH$

We study the sensitivity of the process $μ^-μ^+\to HH$ to the $q^2$-dependence of the $HHH$ form factor, which can reflect the Higgs boson structure, especially in the case of compositeness. We compute the Born and 1 loop SM contribution to this process. We then show how the $μ^-μ^+\to HH$ polarized and unpolarized cross sections are modified by the presence of various types of anomalous contributions to the $HHH$ form factor, in particular Higgs constituents in the case of compositeness.

Specific supersimple properties of $e^-e^+\to γH$ at high energy

We study the process $e^-e^+\to γH$, where $H$ represents $H_{SM}$, $h^0$ or $H^0$, which occurs at the one loop level in the standard model (SM) or in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We establish supersimple (sim) high energy expressions for all helicity amplitudes of this process, and we identify their level of accuracy for describing the various polarized and unpolarized observables, and for distinguishing SM from MSSM or another beyond the standard model (BSM). We pay a special attention to transverse electron-positron polarizations and azimuthal dependencies induced by the imaginary parts of the amplitudes, which are relatively important in this process.

Supersimple analysis of $e^-e^+\to ZH$ at high energy

We study the process $e^-e^+\to ZH$ where $H$ represents the standard model (SM) Higgs particle $H_{SM}$, or the MSSM ones $h^0$ and $H^0$. In each case, we compute the one-loop effects and establish very simple expressions, called supersimple (sim), for the helicity conserving (dominant) and the helicity violating (suppressed) amplitudes. Such expressions, are then used to construct various cross sections and asymmetries, involving polarized or unpolarized beams and Z-polarization measurements. We examine the adequacy of such expressions to distinguish SM or MSSM effects, from other types of BSM (beyond the standard model) contributions.

The Higgs boson structure functions as signposts of new physics

We show that the Higgs boson structure functions observable in the inclusive process $e^-e^+ \to H + {\rm "anything"}$ may reveal the presence of anomalous contributions corresponding to several types of new physics partners, Higgs boson compositeness or invisible (dark) matter. This could be done without making a difficult or even an impossible experimental analysis of the contents of the "anything". We give illustrations showing how the shapes of the various structure functions containing such typical new contributions may differ from the standard prediction and allow their identification.

A supersimple analysis of $e^-e^+\to W^- W^+$ at high energy

Studying $e^-e^+\to W^- W^+$ at the 1loop electroweak (EW) order, we derive very accurate and simple expressions for the four Helicity Conserving (HC) amplitudes, which dominate this process at high energies. The calculations are done in both, the SM and MSSM frameworks. Such expressions, called supersimple (sim), nicely emphasize the dynamical contents of each framework. Numerical illustrations are presented, which show the accuracy of this description, and how it can be used for identifying possible additional new physics contributions; like e.g. Anomalous Gauge Couplings (AGC) or a new $Z'$ vector boson exchange. The procedure is useful even if only SM is visible at the future Linear Collider energies.

A supersimple analysis of $e^-e^+\to t \bar t$ at high energy

According to supersimplicity in MSSM, a renormalization scheme (SRS) may be defined for any high energy 2-to-2 process, to the 1loop EW order; where the helicity conserving (HC) amplitudes, are expressed as a linear combination of just three universal logarithm-involving forms. All other helicity amplitudes vanish asymptotically. Including to these SRS amplitudes the corresponding counter terms, the "supersimple" expressions for the high energy HC amplitudes, renormalized on-shell, are obtained. Previously, this property was noted for a large number of processes that do not involve Yukawa interactions or renormalization group corrections. Here we extend it to $e^-e^+\to t \bar t$, which does involve large Yukawa and renormalization group contributions. We show that the resulting "supersimple" expressions may provide an accurate description, even at energies comparable to the SUSY scale. Such descriptions clearly identify the origin of the important SUSY effects, and they may be used for quickly constraining physics contributions, beyond MSSM.

The relevance of polarized bZ production at LHC

We consider the Z polarization asymmetry A_Z=(sigma(Z_R)-sigma(Z_L))/(sigma(Z_R)+sigma(Z_L)) in the process of associated bZ production at the LHC. We show that in the Standard Model (SM) this quantity is essentially given by its Born approximation, remaining almost unaffected by QCD scales and parton distribution functions variations as well as by electroweak corrections. The theoretical quantity that appears in A_Z is the same that provides the LEP1 Z -> b bbar forward-backward asymmetry, the only measured observable still in some contradiction with the SM prediction. In this sense, A_Z would provide the possibility of an independent verification of the possible SM discrepancy, which could reach, if consistency with LEP1 measurements is imposed, values of the relative ten percent size.

Supersimplicity: a remarkable high energy SUSY property

In previous work, we have established that for any 2-to-2 process in MSSM, only the helicity conserving (HC) amplitudes survive asymptotically. Studying a large number of such processes, at the 1loop Electroweak (EW) order, it is now found that their high energy HC amplitudes are determined by just three forms: a log-squared function of the ratio of two of the (s,t,u) variables, to which a pi^2 is added; and two Sudakov-like ln- and ln^2-terms accompanied by respective mass-dependent constants. Apart from an additional residual constant, all high energy HC amplitudes, may be expressed as linear combinations of the above three forms, with coefficients being rational functions of the $(s,t,u)$ variables. We call this fact supersimplicity. Applying to the $ug\to dW$ amplitudes, for which the complete 1loop expressions are available, we find that supersimplicity may be a very good approximation at LHC energies, provided the SUSY scale is not too high. SM processes are also discussed, and their differences are explored.

The Left-Right asymmetry of top quarks in associated top-charged Higgs bosons at the LHC as a probe of the tan$β$ parameter

Many extensions of the Standard Model involve two Higgs doublet fields to break the electroweak symmetry, leading to the existence of three neutral and two charged Higgs particles. In particular, this is the case of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, the MSSM. A very important parameter is $\tanβ$ defined as the ratio of the vacuum expectation value of the two Higgs doublets. In this paper we focus on the left-right asymmetry in the production of polarised top quarks in association with charged Higgs bosons at the LHC. This quantity allows for a theoretically clean determination of $\tanβ$. In the MSSM, the asymmetry remains sensitive to the strong and electroweak radiative corrections and, thus, to the superparticle spectrum. Some possible implications of these results are discussed.

The processes of gluon fusion producing chargino or neutralino pairs at high energies

According to the helicity conservation (HCns) theorem, the sum of the helicities should be conserved, in any 2-to-2 processes in MSSM with R-parity conservation, at high energies; i.e. all amplitudes violating this rule, must vanish asymptotically. The realization of HCns in gluon-fusion to charginos or neutralinos is studied, at the one loop electroweak order (EW), and simple high energy expressions are derived for the non-vanishing helicity conserving (HC) amplitudes. These are very similar to the corresponding expressions for $gg \to W^+W^-, ZZ, γZ, γγ$ derived before. Asymptotic relations among observable unpolarized cross sections for many such processes are then obtained, some of which may hold at LHC-type energies.

preprint2010arXiv

Amplitudes for $gg \to VV'$ and their high energy SUSY constraints

We study how the property of asymptotic helicity conservation (HCns), expected for any 2-to-2 process in the minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM), is realized in the processes $gg \to γγ,γZ,ZZ,W^+W^-$, at the 1loop electroweak order and very high energies. The violation of this property for the same process in the standard model (SM), is also shown. This strengthens the claim that HCns is specific to the renormalizable SUSY model, and not generally valid in SM. HCns strongly reduces the number of non-vanishing 2-to-2 amplitudes at asymptotic energies in MSSM. Consequences at LHC and higher energy colliders are identified.

Asymptotic Helicity Conservation in SUSY

We summarize the extensive work started in ref.1, according to which total helicity is conserved for any two-to-two process, at sqrt{s} larger than M_{SUSY} and fixed angles, in any SUSY extension of SM. Asymptotically the theorem is exact. But it may also have important implications at lower energies sqrt{s} close to M_{SUSY}. Up to now, these have been investigated to 1loop electroweak (EW) order for the processes ug to d W+, sd_L chi+; as well as the 17 gg to HH', and the 9 gg to VH processes, where H,H' denote Higgs or Goldstone bosons, and V=Z, W.

Semi-inclusive bottom-Higgs production at LHC: The complete one-loop electroweak effect in the MSSM

We present the first complete calculation of the one-loop electroweak effect in the process of semi-inclusive bottom-Higgs production at LHC in the MSSM. The size of the electroweak contribution depends on the choice of the final produced neutral Higgs boson, and can be relevant, in some range of the input parameters. A comparison of the one-loop results obtained in two different renormalization schemes is also performed, showing a very good NLO scheme independence. We further comment on two possible, simpler, approximations of the full NLO result, and on their reliabilty.

preprint2009arXiv

A peculiar property of SUSY amplitudes at high energy

We observe that the electroweak one loop correction to the quark+gluon to quark+Higgs amplitude at high energy involves both single and quadratic logarithms of the energy in the SM case but only quadratic logarithms in the MSSM case. We explore the origin of this special SUSY cancellation, both in a diagrammatic way and through the splitting+Parameter Renormalization procedure. We show that it is not an accident but a remarkableand general SUSY property of the renormalized Higgs-fermion-fermion and Higgsino-sfermion-fermion vertices which directly reflects in such processes, for example in $bg\to tH^-$, $bg\to bH^0$, $bg\to bh^0$, $bg\to bA^0$, and through equivalence in $bg\to tW^-_{long}$, $bg\to bZ_{long}$, as well as in $bg\to \tilde{t}χ^-$, $bg\to\tilde{b}χ^0$. This simplification of the high energy behaviour (which only leaves quadratic logarithms involving pure gauge couplings without any free parameter) allows to write simple relations among these various processes which constitute genuine tests of the assumed SUSY model.

One-loop electroweak effects on stop-chargino production at LHC

The process of stop-chargino production at LHC has been calculated in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at the complete electroweak one-loop level, assuming a mSUGRA symmetry breaking scheme. Several properties of the angular and invariant mass distributions of the basic bottom-gluon to stop-chargino amplitudes have been derived. For a meaningful collection of different benchmark points the overall electroweak one-loop effects are at most of the order of a few percent. At the realistically expected LHC accuracy, the main supersymmetric electroweak features of the process can be therefore essentially derived in this theoretical scheme from the simple Born level expressions.

High energy behaviour of gamma gamma to f f(bar) processes in SM and MSSM

We compute the leading logarithms electroweak contributions to gamma gamma to f f(bar) processes in SM and MSSM. Several interesting properties are pointed out, such as the importance of the angular dependent terms, of the Yukawa terms, and especially of the $\tan^2β$ dependence in the SUSY contributions. These properties are complementary to those found in e+e- to f f(bar). These radiative correction effects should be largely observable at future high energy gamma gamma colliders. Polarized beams would bring interesting checks of the structure of the one loop corrections. We finally discuss the need for two-loop calculations and resummation.

Off-shell structure of the anomalous Z and gamma self-couplings

We establish the general off-shell structure of the three neutral gauge boson self-couplings V1*V2*V3*, with applications to the Z*Z*Z*, Z*Z*gamma*, gamma*gamma*Z* cases. New coupling forms appear which do not exist when two gauge bosons are on-shell. We give the contribution arising from a fermionic triangle loop. It covers both the standard model (SM) and possible new physics (NP) contributions like those arising in the MSSM. For what concerns NP contributions with a high scale, we discuss the validity of an effective Lagrangian involving a limited set of parameters. Finally we write the general expression of the V1*V2*V3*-vertex contribution to the e+e- to (f(bar) f)+(f'(bar) f') amplitude.

Signatures of the anomalous $Zγ$ and ZZ production at the lepton and hadron Colliders

The possible form of New Physics (NP) interactions affecting the ZZZ, $ZZ γ$ and $Zγγ$ vertices, is critically examined. Their signatures and the possibilities to study them, through ZZ and $Zγ$ production, at the e^-e^+ Colliders LEP and LC and at the hadronic Colliders Tevatron and LHC, are investigated. Experimental limits obtained or expected on each coupling are collected. A simple theoretical model based on virtual effects due to some heavy fermions is used for acquiring some guidance on the plausible forms of these NP vertices. In such a case specific relations among the various neutral couplings are predicted, which can be experimentally tested and possibly used to constrain the form of the responsible NP structure.

Susy Virtual effects at LEP2 Boundary

We examine the possibility that SUSY particles are light, i.e. have a mass just beyond the final kinematical reach of LEP2. In this case, even if light particles are not directly detected, their virtual effects are enhanced by a ``close to threshold'' resonance in the s-channel. We find that this resonant effect is absent in the case of light sfermions, while it is enhanced in the case of light gauginos, since neutralinos and charginos add coherently in some regions of the allowed parameter space. We discuss this ``virtual-alliance'' in detail and try to examine the possibilities of its experimental verification.

The gamma gamma to gamma gamma process in the Standard and SUSY models at high energies

We study the helicity amplitudes of the process γγ\to γγat high energy, which in the standard and SUSY models first arise at the one-loop order. In the standard model (SM), the diagrams involve W and charged quark and lepton loops, while in SUSY we also have contributions from chargino, charged sfermion and Higgs loop diagrams. The SUSY contributions are most important in the region above the threshold for producing the supersymmetric partners; since there, they interfere most effectively with the primarily imaginary SM amplitudes. Simple expressions for the relevant 1-loop functions are given, which provide a direct overview of the behaviour of the helicity amplitudes in the whole parameter space at high energies. The various characteristics of a large set of observables are studied in detail.

The gamma gamma to gamma Z process at high energies and the search for virtual SUSY effects

We study the helicity amplitudes and the observables of the process $γγ\to γZ$ at high energy. As in the case of the $γγ\to γγ$ process studied before, the relevant diagrams in the standard model (SM) involve $W$, charged quark and lepton loops; while in SUSY we also have contributions from chargino, and charged sfermion or Higgs loop diagrams. Above 250 GeV, the dominant SM amplitudes are themselves dominated by the $W$ loop, and as for $γγ\to γγ$, they are helicity conserving and almost purely imaginary. We discuss the complementary information provided by $γγ\to γZ$ for the identification of possible non standard effects. This process, together with $γγ\to γγ$, should provide very useful information on the nature of possible new physics particles, above the threshold of their direct production.

preprint1999arXiv

The gamma gamma to Z Z process and the search for virtual SUSY effects at a gamma gamma Collider

We study the helicity amplitudes of the process gamma gamma to ZZ in the Standard Model at high energy. These amplitudes receive contributions from the W and charged quark and lepton loops, analogous to those encountered in the gamma gamma to gamma gamma, gamma Z cases studied before. But gamma gamma to ZZ also receives contributions from the Higgs s-channel poles involving the effective Higgs-gamma gamma vertex. At energies of about 300 GeV, the amplitudes in all three processes are mainly helicity-conserving and almost purely imaginary; which renders them a very useful tool in searching for New Physics. As an example, a SUSY case is studied, and the signatures due to the virtual effects induced by a chargino-, charged slepton- or a lightest stop-loop in gamma gamma to ZZ, are explored. These signatures, combined with the analogous ones in gamma gamma to gamma gamma and gamma gamma to gamma Z, should help identifying the nature of possible New Physics particles.

New Physics Signatures in Dijets at Hadron Colliders

We show how to detect and disentangle at the upgraded Tevatron and at LHC, the effects of the three purely gluonic $dim=6$ $SU(3)\times SU(2) \times U(1)$ CP-conserving and CP-violating gauge invariant operators $\olØ_{DG}$, $Ø_G$ and $\wtilØ_{G}$. These operators are inevitably generated by New Physics (NP), if the heavy particles responsible for it are coloured. We establish the relations between their coupling constants and the corresponding NP scales defined through the unitarity relations. We then study the sensitivity and limits obtainable through production processes involving one or two jets, and express these limits in terms of the NP scales implied by unitarity. A detailed comparison with the results of the studies of the analogous electroweak operators, is also made.

Using e-e+ to b b(bar) to test properties of new interactions at LEP2 and higher energies

We show that in e-e+ colliders at energies above the Z-peak, the process e-e+ to b b(bar) becomes very sensitive to the presence of residual New Physics (NP) effects described by the dim=6 SU(3)*SU(2)*U(1) gauge invariant operators O(qW), O(qB) and O(bB). This observation should be combined with the already known great sensitivity of the light fermion production through e-e+ annihilation above the Z-peak, to the bosonic operators O(DW) and O(DB). It is important to emphasize that the effects of all these operators are largely hidden at the Z-peak; while they are enhanced above it through the use the "Z-peak subtracted representation". The observability limits for detecting these operators at LEP2 and NLC, through such light fermion production processes, are also established.

Hadrophilic Z':a bridge from LEP1, SLC and CDF to LEP2 anomalies

In order to explain possible departures from the Standard Model predictions for $b\bar b$ and $c\bar c$ production at $Z$ peak, we propose the existence of a $Z'$ vector boson with enhanced couplings to quarks. We first show that this proposal is perfectly consistent with the full set of LEP1/SLC results. In particular, $Z-Z'$ mixing effects naturally explain the fact that $Γ_b$ and $Γ_c$ deviate from the SM in opposite directions. We then show that there is a predicted range for enhanced $Z'q\bar q$ couplings which explains, for a precise and interesting range of $Z'$ masses, the excess of dijet events seen at CDF. A $Z'$ with such couplings and mass would produce clean observable effects in $b\bar b$ and in total hadronic production at LEP2.

Longitudinal Polarization at future $e^+e^-$ Colliders and Virtual New Physics Effects

The theoretical merits of longitudinal polarization asymmetries of electron-positron annihilation into two final fermions at future colliders are examined, using a recently proposed theoretical description. A number of interesting features, valid for searches of virtual effects of new physics, is underlined, that is reminiscent of analogous properties valid on top of $Z$ resonance. As an application to a concrete example, we consider the case of a model with triple anomalous gauge couplings and show that the additional information provided by these asymmetries would lead to a drastic reduction of the allowed domain of the relevant parameters.

Anomalous Weak Boson Couplings: Suggestions from Unitarity and Dynamics

Taking into account the constraints from LEP1 and lower energy experiments, we identify the seven $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge invariant purely bosonic $dim=6$ operators which provide a quite general description of how New Physics could reflect in the bosonic world, if it happens that all new degrees of freedom are too heavy to be directly produced in the future colliders. Five of these operators are CP conserving and the remaining ones are CP violating. We derive the unitarity constraints for the CP violating operators and compare them with the already known constraints for the CP conserving ones. Dynamical renormalizable models are also presented, which partly elucidate what the appearance of each of these operators can teach us on the mechanism of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking.

Residual heavy quark and boson interactions: the role of the $Zb\bar b$ vertex

We establish the most general parametrization of the new physics tested by present precision measurements and possibly responsible for any deviation of the $Z\to b \bar b $ amplitude from its Standard Model result, under the assumption that it is CP symmetric and is induced by degrees of freedom which are too heavy to be ~directly produced at the future Colliders. This is achieved by writing the complete list of the $SU(3)_c\times SU(2) \times U(1) $ gauge invariant and CP symmetric $dim=6$ operators, involving only quarks of the third family and/or bosons. The quark ~containing operators are divided into two classes, according to whether they involve the $t_R$ field or not. Each class contains 14 quark operators. We then proceed to derive the constraints from present precision measurements, on the first class of the 14 $t_R$ involving operators. We show that the $Zb \bar b$ vertex plays a fundamental role to discriminate not only between these operators, but also between this whole scheme and an alternative one like \eg\@ an MSSM description with light chargino and neutral Higgs.

Residual New Physics Effects in $e^+e^-$ and $γγ$ Collisions

We present a set of studies concerning the description of New Physics (NP) effects caracterized by a scale much higher than the electroweak scale. We show that both present experimental results and several types of theretical considerations about the Standard Model (SM) and NP suggest a hierarchy among the sectors in which NP manifestations should appear. We concentrate on residual effects described by effective lagrangians involving bosonic and/or heavy quark fields. For each operator we propose an unambiguous definition of the NP scale given by the energy at which unitarity is saturated. We also consider the possible existence of Higher Vector Bosons. We then study the tests realizable at present and future colliders. We start from the analysis of the high precision tests at Z peak, discussing separately the constraints obtained from the light fermionic sector and those due to the $b\bar b$ sector. We then consider the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar f$ at higher energies (LEP2 and NLC) and we propose the "Z peak subtracted representation" which allows to automatically take into account Z peak constraints and to describe several types of NP effects at any other energy. Applications to various NP effects (Higher Vector Bosons, Technicolour resonances, Anomalous Gauge Boson couplings) are given. We then concentrate on several bosonic processes, $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$, $HZ$, $Hγ$, and $γγ$ collisions producing boson pairs or a single Higgs. We study the sensitivities to the various operators involved in the effective lagrangian and we propose ways to disentangle them. The NP scales which can be felt vary from a few TeV at LEP2 up to 200 TeV in single H production at NLC.

Signatures of anomalous coupling in boson pair production through γγcollisions

We discuss possible New Physics (NP) effects on the processes $γγ\to W^+W^-$, $ZZ$, $Zγ$, $γγ$, $HH$ which are observable in $γγ$ collisions. Such collisions may be achieved through laser backscattering at a high energy $e^+e^-$ linear collider. To the extent that no new particles will be directly produced in the future colliders, it has already been emphasized that the new physics possibly hidden in the bosonic interactions, may be represented by the seven $dim=6$ operators $Ø_W$, $Ø_{BΦ}$, $Ø_{WΦ}$, $Ø_{UB}$, $Ø_{UW}$, $\olØ_{UB}$ and $\olØ_{UW}$ (the last two ones being CP-violating). In this paper, we show that the above processes are sensitive to NP scales at the several TeV range, and we subsequently discuss the possibility to disentangle the effects of the various operators.

The Bosonic Sector of the Electroweak Interactions, Status and Tests at Present and Future Colliders

The status of the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed. We emphazize the fact that in spite of the success of the SM for the descrition of the fermionic sector, the status of the bosonic sector (gauge and scalar) suffers from many theoretical deficiencies and from the lack of empirical support. This situation, which leaves room for several types of extensions or alternatives to SM, strongly motivates the pursue of intense efforts for finding hints of New Physics (NP) effects. We present a phenomenological description valid for energies lying below the NP scale. We discuss the indirect constraints established from high precision tests at LEP1, as well as the direct tests that could be performed at future machines
