Classical Stochastic Discrete Time Crystals

We describe a possible general and simple paradigm in a classical thermal setting for discrete time crystals (DTCs), systems with stable dynamics which is subharmonic to the driving frequency thus breaking discrete time-translational invariance. We consider specifically an Ising model in two dimensions, as a prototypical system with a phase transition into stable phases distinguished by a local order parameter, driven by a thermal dynamics and periodically kicked. We show that for a wide parameter range a stable DTC emerges. The phase transition to the DTC state appears to be in the equilibrium 2D Ising class when dynamics is observed stroboscopically. However, we show that the DTC is a genuine non-equilibrium state. More generally, we speculate that systems with thermal phase transitions to multiple competing phases can give rise to DTCs when appropriately driven.

Out of equilibrium density dynamics of a quenched fermionic system

Using a Luttinger liquid theory we investigate the time evolution of the particle density of a one-dimensional fermionic system with open boundaries and subject to a finite duration quench of the inter-particle interaction. We provide analytical and asymptotic solutions to the unitary time evolution of the system, showing that both switching on and switching off the quench ramp create light-cone perturbations in the density. The post-quench dynamics is strongly affected by the interference between these two perturbations. In particular, we find that the discrepancy between the time-dependent density and the one obtained by a generalized Gibbs ensemble picture vanishes with an oscillatory behavior as a function of the quench duration, with local minima corresponding to a perfect overlap of the two light-cone perturbations. For adiabatic quenches, we also obtain a similar behavior in the approach of the generalized Gibbs ensemble density towards the one associated with the ground state of the final Hamiltonian.

Universal transport dynamics in a quenched tunnel-coupled Luttinger liquid

The transport dynamics of a quenched Luttinger liquid tunnel-coupled to a fermionic reservoir is investigated. In the transient dynamics, we show that for a sudden quench of the electron interaction universal power-law decay in time of the tunneling current occurs, ascribed to the presence of entangled compound excitations created by the quench. In sharp contrast to the usual non universal power-law behavior of a zero-temperature non-quenched Luttinger liquid, the steady state tunneling current is ohmic and can be explained in terms of an effective quench-activated heating of the system. Our study unveils an unconventional dynamics for a quenched Luttinger liquid that could be identified in quenched cold Fermi gases.

Anomalous Friedel oscillations in a quasi-helical quantum dot

The charge and spin patterns of a quantum dot embedded into a spin-orbit coupled quantum wire subject to a magnetic field are investigated. A Luttinger liquid theory is developed, taking into account open boundaries and finite magnetic field. In the quasi-helical regime, when spin-orbit effects dominate over the Zeeman interaction, peculiar states develop at the Fermi surface of the dot. Anomalous Friedel oscillations with twice the expected wavelength develop in the wavefunction of collective excitations of such states, accompanied by peculiar spin patterns in their magnetization. Both effects are analyzed in detail and shown possible to be probed in transport experiments. The stability against electron interactions and magnetic field is investigated. We also discuss how signatures of such states survive in the total charge and spin densities.

Correlation functions for the detection of Wigner molecules in a one-channel Luttinger liquid quantum dot

In one-channel, finite-size Luttinger one-dimensional quantum dots, both Friedel oscillations and Wigner correlations induce oscillations in the electron density with the same wavelength, pinned at the same position. Therefore, observing such a property does not provide any hint about the formation of a Wigner molecule when electrons interact strongly and other tools must be employed to assess the formation of such correlated states. We compare here the behavior of three different correlation functions and demonstrate that the integrated two point correlation function, which represents the probability density of finding two particles at a given distance, is the only faithful estimator for the formation of a correlated Wigner molecule.
