${\cal N}{=}4$ Supersymmetric $d=1$ Sigma Models on Group Manifolds

We construct manifestly ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric off-shell superfield actions for the HKT $d=1$ sigma models on the group manifolds U(2) and SU(3), using the harmonic $d=1$ approach. The underlying $({\bf 4, 4, 0})$ and $({\bf 4, 4, 0})\oplus({\bf 4, 4, 0})$ multiplets are described, respectively, by one and two harmonic analytic superfields $q^+$ satisfying the appropriate nonlinear harmonic constraints. The invariant actions in both cases are bilinear in the superfields. We present the corresponding superfield realizations of the U(2) and SU(3) isometries and show that in fact they are enlarged to the products U(2)$\times$SU(2) and SU(3)$\times$U(2). We prove the corresponding invariances at both the superfield and component levels and present the bosonic $d=1$ sigma model actions, as integral over $t$ in the U(2) case and over $t$ and ${\rm SU}(2)$ harmonics in the SU(3) case. In the U(2) case we also give a detailed comparison with the general harmonic approach to HKT models and establish a correspondence with a particular action of the off-shell nonlinear multiplet $({\bf 3, 4, 1})$. A possible way of generalizing U(2) model to the matrix U($2n$) case is suggested.

Geometry and Harmonic Superspace: some recent progress

This contribution follows the talk, given by F. Delduc at the conference SQS'2011 in Dubna, Russia (July 18-23, 2011). To a considerable extent it is a summary of known facts about the links between geometry and extended supersymmetry in d=1 mechanics, with emphasis on the harmonic superspace method created in Dubna in the 80's. Some recent developments based on ref. [1] are also presented.

N = 4 mechanics of general (4, 4, 0) multiplets

We construct the manifestly N=4 supersymmetric off-shell superfield "master" action for any number n of the N=4 supermultiplets (4, 4, 0) described by harmonic analytic superfields q^{+a}(ζ, u), a= 1, ... 2n, subjected to the most general harmonic constraints. The action consists of the sigma-model and Wess-Zumino parts. We present the general expressions for the target space metric, torsion and background gauge fields. The generic target space geometry is shown to be weak HKT (hyper-Kähler with torsion), with the strong HKT and HK ones as particular cases. The background gauge fields obey the self-duality condition. Our formulation suggests that the weak HKT geometry is fully specified by the two primary potentials: an unconstrained scalar potential {\cal L}(q^+, q^-, u)|_{θ= 0} which is the θ= 0 projection of the superfield sigma-model Lagrangian, and a charge 3 harmonic analytic potential {\cal L}^{+ 3a}(q^+, u)|_{θ= 0} coming from the harmonic constraint on q^{+ a}. The reductions to the strong HKT and HK geometries amount to simple restrictions on the underlying potentials. We also show, using the N=2 superfield approach, that the most general bosonic target geometry of the N=4, d=1 sigma models, of which the weak HKT geometry is a particular case, naturally comes out after adding the mirror (4, 4, 0) multiplets with different transformation laws under N=4 supersymmetry and SO(4) R symmetry. Thus the minimal dimension of the target spaces exhibiting such a "weakest" geometry is 8, which corresponds to a pair of the mutually mirror (4, 4, 0) multiplets.

Gauging N=4 Supersymmetric Mechanics

We argue that off-shell dualities between d=1 supermultiplets with different sets of physical bosonic components and the same number of fermionic ones are related to gauging some symmetries in the actions of the supermultiplets with maximal sets of physical bosons. Our gauging procedure uses off-shell superfields and so is manifestly supersymmetric. We focus on N=4 supersymmetric mechanics and show that various actions of the multiplet (3,4,1) amount to some gauge choices in the gauged superfield actions of the linear or nonlinear (4,4,0) multiplets. In particular, the conformally invariant (3,4,1) superpotential is generated by the Fayet-Iliopoulos term of the gauge superfield. We find a new nonlinear variant of the multiplet (4,4,0), such that its simplest superfield action produces the most general 4-dim hyper-Kähler metric with one triholomorphic isometry as the bosonic target metric. We also elaborate on some other instructive examples of N=4 superfield gaugings, including a non-abelian gauging which relates the free linear (4,4,0) multiplet to a self-interacting (1,4,3) multiplet.

1/4 PBGS and Superparticle Actions

We construct the worldline superfield massive superparticle actions which preserve 1/4 portion of the underlying higher-dimensional supersymmetry. We consider the cases of N=4/N=1 and N=8/N=2 partial breaking. In the first case we present the corresponding Green-Schwarz type target superspace action with one kappa supersymmetry. In the second case we find out two possibilities, one of which is a direct generalization of the N=4/N=1 case, while another is essentially different.

$N=2$ chiral WZNW model in superspace

We study the Poisson bracket algebra of the $N=2$ supersymmetric chiral WZNW model in superspace. It involves two classical r-matrices, one of which comes from the geometrical constraints implied by $N=2$ supersymmetry. The phase space itself consists of superfields satisfying constraints involving this r-matrix. An attempt is made to relax these constraints. The symmetries of the model are investigated.

Regular Conjugacy Classes in the Weyl Group and Integrable Hierarchies

Generalized KdV hierarchies associated by Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction to grade one regular semisimple elements from non-equivalent Heisenberg subalgebras of a loop algebra $\G\otimes{\bf C}[λ,λ^{-1}]$ are studied. The graded Heisenberg subalgebras containing such elements are labelled by the regular conjugacy classes in the Weyl group ${\bf W}(\G)$ of the simple Lie algebra $\G$. A representative $w\in {\bf W}(\G)$ of a regular conjugacy class can be lifted to an inner automorphism of $\G$ given by $\hat w=\exp\left(2iπ{\rm ad I_0}/m\right)$, where $I_0$ is the defining vector of an $sl_2$ subalgebra of $\G$.The grading is then defined by the operator $d_{m,I_0}=mλ{d\over dλ} + {\rm ad} I_0$ and any grade one regular element $Λ$ from the Heisenberg subalgebra associated to $[w]$ takes the form $Λ= (C_+ +λC_-)$, where $[I_0, C_-]=-(m-1) C_-$ and $C_+$ is included in an $sl_2$ subalgebra containing $I_0$. The largest eigenvalue of ${\rm ad}I_0$ is $(m-1)$ except for some cases in $F_4$, $E_{6,7,8}$. We explain how these Lie algebraic results follow from known results and apply them to construct integrable systems.If the largest ${\rm ad} I_0$ eigenvalue is $(m-1)$, then using any grade one regular element from the Heisenberg subalgebra associated to $[w]$ we can construct a KdV system possessing the standard $\W$-algebra defined by $I_0$ as its second Poisson bracket algebra. For $\G$ a classical Lie algebra, we derive pseudo-differential Lax operators for those non-principal KdV systems that can be obtained as discrete reductions of KdV systems related to $gl_n$. Non-abelian Toda systems are also considered.

A Renormalization Group Study of Helimagnets in D=2+EPSILON Dimensions

We study a non linear sigma model $O(N)\otimes O(2)/O(N-2)\otimes O(2)$ describing the phase transition of N-components helimagnets up to two loop order in $D=2+ε$ dimensions. It is shown that a stable fixed point exists as soon as $N$ is greater than 3 (or equal). In the N=3 case, the symmetry of the system is dynamically enlarged at the fixed point to O(4) We show that the order parameter for Heisenberg helimagnets involves a tensor representation of $O(4)$. We show that for large $N$ and in the neighborhood of two dimensions this nonlinear sigma model describes the same critical theory as the Landau-Ginzburg linear theory. We deduce that there exists a dividing line $N_c (D)$ in the plane $(N, D)$ separating a first-order region containing the Heisenberg point at $D=4$ and a second-order region containing the whole $D=2$ axis. We conclude that the phase transition of Heisenberg helimagnets in dimension 3 is either first order or second order with $O(4)$ exponents involving a tensor representation or tricritical.

A twistor formulation of the heterotic D=10 superstring with manifest (8,0) worldsheet supersymmetry

We propose a new formulation of the heterotic $D=10$ Green-Schwarz superstring whose worldsheet is a superspace with two even and eight odd coordinates. The action is manifestly invariant under both target-space supersymmetry and a worldsheet reparametrisation supergroup. It contains only a finite set of auxiliary fields. The key ingredient are the commuting spinor (twistor) variables, which naturally arise as worldsheet superpartners of the target space Grassmann coordinates. These spinors parametrise the sphere $S^8$ regarded as a coset space of the $D=10$ Lorentz group. The sphere is associated with the lightlike vector of one of the string Virasoro constraints. The origin of the on-shell $D=10$ fermionic kappa symmetry of the standard Green-Schwarz formulation is explained. An essential and unusual feature is the appearance of the string tension only on shell as an integration constant.
