A two-dimensional space-time terahertz memory in bulk SrTiO3

Ferroelectric materials offer unprecedented ultrafast responses and are of great interest for the development of new polarizable media under the influence of an electromagnetic field. Recent research efforts have demonstrated the role of optical excitation and intense terahertz (THz) pulses in inducing a polar order and revealing a hidden phase transition in SrTiO3 (STO), respectively. Here we show that the surface of STO crystals at room temperature act as ultrafast sensors that enable sub-picosecond switching through the Kerr effect and multi-ps recording of polar THz intensity with spatial resolution below the diffraction limit through dipole alignment relaxation. The contrast sensitivity and spatial resolution achieved by in the STO sensor are significantly superior to those of present-day near-field THz sensors based on the linear Pockels effect, and more importantly, its ability to remain polarized for several picoseconds opens the door to a new strategy for building an ultrafast space-time THz memory.

Near-optimal intense and powerful terahertz source by optical rectification in lithium niobate crystal

Using an affordable ytterbium laser with sub-mJ of energy combined with a novel pulse compression technique, we demonstrate an extremely competitive state-of-the-art terahertz (THz) source with 53 mW of average power and 310 kV/cm at focus from the tilted-pulse front pumping scheme in lithium niobate at room temperature. Key points of this demonstration include the use of a pump pulse duration of 280 fs in combination with an echelon mirror. Our results present unmatched combined characteristics and are highly competitive with the existing THz sources pumped at the mJ range. This demonstration is a step towards the democratization of access to intense and powerful THz pulses.

Real-time terahertz near-field microscope

Terahertz (THz) waves have been significantly developed in the last fifteen years because of their great potential for applications in industrial and scientific communities1,2. The unique properties of THz waves as transparency for numerous materials and strong absorption for water-based materials are expected to broadly impact biosensing3 such as medical imaging4, chemical identifications5, and DNA recognition6. In particular, for accessing information within a scale comparable to the cell size where interactions between cell membrane and other organelle structures occur, micron size spatial resolution is required. Due to the large wavelength, however, the joint capability of THz near-field imaging with real-time acquisition, which is a highly desirable ability for observing real-time changes of in vivo sample, remains undone. Here, we report a real-time THz near-field microscope with a high dynamic range that can capture images of a 370 x 740 μm2 area at 35 frames per second. We achieve high spatial resolution on a large area by combining two novel techniques: THz pulse generation by tilted-pulse-front excitation7 and electro-optic (EO) balanced imaging detection using a thin crystal. To demonstrate the microscope capability, we reveal the field enhancement at the gap position of a dipole antenna after the irradiation of a THz pulse. Our results are the first demonstration of a direct quantification of a 2-dimensional subwavelength THz electric field taken in real-time.

Single-cycle THz pulses with amplitudes exceeding 1 MV/cm generated by optical rectification in LiNbO3

Using the tilted-pulse-intensity-front scheme, we generate single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses by optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in LiNbO3. In the THz generation setup, the condition that the image of the grating coincides with the tilted-optical-pulse front is fulfilled to obtain optimal THz beam characteristics and pump-to-THz conversion efficiency. The designed focusing geometry enables tight focus of the collimated THz beam with a spot size close to the diffraction limit, and the maximum THz electric field of 1.2 MV/cm is obtained.

Anisotropic ultrafast electron dynamics induced by high-field terahertz pulses in n-doped InGaAs

The anisotropic effective mass of electrons is directly measured using time-resolved THz- pump/THz-probe techniques in a n-doped InGaAs semiconductor thin film. A microscopic theory is used to attribute this anisotropy in the THz probe transmission to the nonparabolicity of the conduction band. Self-consistent light-matter coupling is shown to contribute significantly to the THz response.
