Confirmation of the presence of a CRSF in the NICER spectrum of X 1822-371

X 1822-371 is an eclipsing binary system with a period close to 5.57 hr and an orbital period derivative $\dot{P}_{\rm orb}$ of 1.42(3)$\times 10^{-10}$ s s$^{-1}$. The extremely high value of its $\dot{P}_{\rm orb}$ is compatible with a super-Eddington mass transfer rate from the companion star and, consequently, an intrinsic luminosity at the Eddington limit. The source is also an X-ray pulsar, it shows a spin frequency of 1.69 Hz and is in a spin-up phase with a spin frequency derivative of $7.4 \times 10^{-12}$ Hz s$^{-1}$. Assuming a luminosity at the Eddington limit, a neutron star magnetic field strength of $B = 8 \times 10^{10}$ G is estimated. However, a direct measure of $B$ could be obtained observing a CRSF in the energy spectrum. Analysis of \textit{XMM-Newton} data suggested the presence of a cyclotron line at 0.73 keV, with an estimated magnetic field strength of $B=(8.8 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{10}$ G. Here we analyze the 0.3-50 keV broadband spectrum of X 1822-371 combining a 0.3-10 keV NICER spectrum and a 4.5-50 keV \textit{NuSTAR} spectrum to investigate the presence of a cyclotron absorption line and the complex continuum emission spectrum. The NICER spectrum confirms the presence of a cyclotron line at 0.66 keV. The continuum emission is modeled with a Comptonized component, a thermal component associated with the presence of an accretion disk truncated at the magnetospheric radius of 105 km and a reflection component from the disk blurred by relativistic effects. We confirm the presence of a cyclotron line at 0.66 keV inferring a NS magnetic field of $B = (7.9\pm 0.5) \times 10^{10}$ G and suggesting that the Comptonized component originates in the accretion columns.

A transient ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 55

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a class of accreting compact objects with X-ray luminosities above 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The average number of ULXs per galaxy is still not well constrained, especially given the uncertainty on the fraction of ULX transients. Here, we report the identification of a new transient ULX in the galaxy NGC 55 (which we label as ULX-2), thanks to recent XMM-Newton and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory observations. This object was previously classified as a transient X-ray source with a luminosity around a few 10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in a 2010 XMM-Newton observation. Thanks to new and deeper observations ($\sim$ 130 ks each), we show that the source reaches a luminosity peak $>1.6 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The X-ray spectrum of ULX-2 is much softer than in previous observations and fits in the class of soft ULXs. It can be well described using a model with two thermal components, as often found in ULXs. The time scales of the X-ray variability are of the order of a month and are likely driven by small changes in the accretion rate or due to super-orbital modulations, attributed to precession of the accretion disc, which is similar to other ULXs.

Unveiling the disc structure in ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 55 ULX-1

Despite two decades of studies, it is still not clear whether ULX spectral transitions are due to stochastic variability in the wind or variations in the accretion rate or in the source geometry. The compact object is also unknown for most ULXs. In order to place constraints onto such scenarios and on the structure of the accretion disc, we studied the temporal evolution of the spectral components of the variable source NGC 55 ULX-1. Using recent and archival data obtained with the XMM-Newton satellite, we modelled the spectra with two blackbody components which we interpret as thermal emission from the inner accretion flow and the regions around or beyond the spherization radius. The luminosity-temperature (L-T) relation of each spectral component agrees with the L proportional T^4 relationship expected from a thin disc model, which suggests that the accretion rate is close to the Eddington limit. However, there are some small deviations at the highest luminosities, possibly due to an expansion of the disc and a contribution from the wind at higher accretion rates. Assuming that such deviations are due to the crossing of the Eddington or supercritical accretion rate, we estimate a compact object mass of 6-14 Msun, favouring a stellar-mass black hole as the accretor.

Current in coherent quantum systems connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs

We study particle current in a recently proposed model for coherent quantum transport. In this model a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir) is driven out of equilibrium by the action of super reservoirs thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. We compare exact (numerical) results with theoretical expectations based on the Landauer formula

Nonequlibrium particle and energy currents in quantum chains connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs

We propose a model of nonequilibrium quantum transport of particles and energy in a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir). The meso-reservoirs are in turn thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. As an example, we study transport in monoatomic and diatomic chains of non-interacting spinless fermions. We show numerically the breakdown of the Onsager reciprocity relation due to the dissipative terms of the model.

Particle and Energy Transport in quantum disordered and quasi-periodic chains connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs

We study a model of nonequilibrium quantum transport of particles and energy in a many-body system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (the so-called meso-reservoirs). We discuss the conservation laws of particles and energy within our setup as well as the transport properties of quasi-periodic and disordered chains.
