The universal algebra of the electromagnetic field III. Static charges and emergence of gauge fields

A universal C*-algebra of gauge invariant operators is presented, describing the electromagnetic field as well as operations creating pairs of static electric charges having opposite signs. Making use of Gauss' law, it is shown that the string-localized operators, which necessarily connect the charges, induce outer automorphisms of the algebra of the electromagnetic field. Thus they carry additional degrees of freedom which cannot be created by the field. It reveals the fact that gauge invariant operators encode information about the presence of non-observable gauge fields underlying the theory. Using the Gupta-Bleuler formalism, concrete implementations of the outer automorphisms by exponential functions of the gauge fields are presented. These fields also appear in unitary operators inducing the time translations in the resulting representations of the universal algebra.

The universal C*-algebra of the electromagnetic field

A universal C*-algebra of the electromagnetic field is constructed. It is represented in any quantum field theory which incorporates electromagnetism and expresses basic features of this field such as Maxwell's equations, Poincaré covariance and Einstein causality. Moreover, topological properties of the field resulting from Maxwell's equations are encoded in the algebra, leading to commutation relations with values in its center. The representation theory of the algebra is discussed with focus on vacuum representations, fixing the dynamics of the field.

Presheaves of superselection structures in curved spacetimes

We show that superselection structures on curved spacetimes, that are expected to describe quantum charges affected by the underlying geometry, are categories of sections of presheaves of symmetric tensor categories. When an embedding functor is given, the superselection structure is a Tannaka-type dual of a locally constant group bundle, which hence becomes a natural candidate for the role of gauge group. Indeed, we show that any locally constant group bundle (with suitable structure group) acts on a net of C*-algebras fulfilling normal commutation relations on an arbitrary spacetime. We also give examples of gerbes of C*-algebras, defined by Wightman fields and constructed using projective representations of the fundamental group of the spacetime, that we propose as solutions for the problem that existence and uniqueness of the embedding functor are not guaranteed.

Presheaves of symmetric tensor categories and nets of C*-algebras

Motivated by algebraic quantum field theory, we study presheaves of symmetric tensor categories defined over the base of a space, intended as a spacetime. Any section of a presheaf (that is, any "superselection sector", in the applications that we have in mind) defines a holonomy representation whose triviality is measured by Cheeger-Chern-Simons characteristic classes, and a non-abelian unitary cocycle defining a Lie group gerbe. We show that, given an embedding in a presheaf of full subcategories of the one of Hilbert spaces, the section category of a presheaf is a Tannaka-type dual of a locally constant group bundle (the "gauge group"), which may not exist and in general is not unique. This leads to the notion of gerbe of C*-algebras, defined on the given base.

The C(X)-algebra of a net and index theory

Given a connected and locally compact Hausdorff space X with a good base K we assign, in a functorial way, a C(X)-algebra to any precosheaf of C*-algebras A defined over K. Afterwards we consider the representation theory and the Kasparov K-homology of A, and interpret them in terms, respectively, of the representation theory and the K-homology of the associated C(X)-algebra. When A is an observable net over the spacetime X in the sense of algebraic quantum field theory, this yields a geometric description of the recently discovered representations affected by the topology of X.

The K-homology of nets of C*-algebras

Let X be a space, intended as a possibly curved spacetime, and A a precosheaf of C*-algebras on X. Motivated by algebraic quantum field theory, we study the Kasparov and Theta-summable K-homology of A interpreting them in terms of the holonomy equivariant K-homology of the associated C*-dynamical system. This yields a characteristic class for K-homology cycles of A with values in the odd cohomology of X, that we interpret as a generalized statistical dimension.

QED Representation for the Net of Causal Loops

The present work tackles the existence of local gauge symmetries in the setting of Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (AQFT). The net of causal loops, previously introduced by the authors, is a model independent construction of a covariant net of local C*-algebras on any 4-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime, aimed to capture some structural properties of any reasonable quantum gauge theory. In fact, representations of this net can be described by causal and covariant connection systems, and the local gauge transformations arise as maps between equivalent connection systems. The present paper completes these abstract results, realizing QED as a representation of the net of causal loops in Minkowski spacetime. More precisely, we map the quantum electromagnetic field Fμν, not free in general, into a representation of the net of causal loops and show that the corresponding connection system and local gauge transformations find a counterpart in terms of Fμν.

A new light on nets of C*-algebras and their representations

The present paper deals with the question of representability of nets of C*-algebras whose underlying poset, indexing the net, is not upward directed. A particular class of nets, called C*-net bundles, is classified in terms of C*-dynamical systems having as group the fundamental group of the poset. Any net of C*-algebras embeds into a unique C*-net bundle, the enveloping net bundle, which generalizes the notion of universal C*-algebra given by Fredenhagen to nonsimply connected posets. This allows a classification of nets; in particular, we call injective those nets having a faithful embedding into the enveloping net bundle. Injectivity turns out to be equivalent to the existence of faithful representations. We further relate injectivity to a generalized Cech cocycle of the net, and this allows us to give examples of nets exhausting the above classification. Using the results of this paper we shall show, in a forthcoming paper, that any conformal net over S^1 is injective.

Representations of nets of C*-algebras over S^1

In recent times a new kind of representations has been used to describe superselection sectors of the observable net over a curved spacetime, taking into account of the effects of the fundamental group of the spacetime. Using this notion of representation, we prove that any net of C*-algebras over S^1 admits faithful representations, and when the net is covariant under Diff(S^1), it admits representations covariant under any amenable subgroup of Diff(S^1).

Bundles of C*-categories, II: C*-dynamical systems and Dixmier-Douady invariants

We introduce a cohomological invariant arising from a class in nonabelian cohomology. This invariant generalizes the Dixmier-Douady class and encodes the obstruction to a C*-algebra bundle being the fixed-point algebra of a gauge action. As an application, the duality breaking for group bundles vs. tensor C*-categories with non-simple unit is discussed in the setting of Nistor-Troitsky gauge-equivariant K-theory: there is a map assigning a nonabelian gerbe to a tensor category, and "triviality" of the gerbe is equivalent to the existence of a dual group bundle. At the C*-algebraic level, this corresponds to studying C*-algebra bundles with fibre a fixed-point algebra of the Cuntz algebra and in this case our invariant describes the obstruction to finding an embedding into the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a vector bundle.

Bundles of C*-categories and duality

We introduce the notions of multiplier C*-category and continuous bundle of C*-categories, as the categorical analogues of the corresponding C*-algebraic notions. Every symmetric tensor C*-category with conjugates is a continuous bundle of C*-categories, with base space the spectrum of the C*-algebra associated with the identity object. We classify tensor C*-categories with fibre the dual of a compact Lie group in terms of suitable principal bundles. This also provides a classification for certain C*-algebra bundles, with fibres fixed-point algebras of O_d.

Gauge-equivariant Hilbert bimodules and crossed products by endomorphisms

C*-endomorphisms arising from superselection structures with non-trivial centre define a 'rank' and a 'first Chern class'. Crossed products by such endomorphisms involve the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a vector bundle having the above-mentioned rank and first Chern class, and can be used to construct a duality for abstract (nonsymmetric) tensor categories vs. group bundles acting on (nonsymmetric) Hilbert bimodules. Existence and unicity of the dual object (i.e., the 'gauge' group bundle) are not ensured: we give a description of this phenomenon in terms of a certain moduli space associated with the given endomorphism. The above-mentioned Hilbert bimodules are noncommutative analogues of gauge-equivariant vector bundles in the sense of Nistor-Troitsky.

Realization of minimal C*-dynamical systems in terms of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras

In the present paper we study tensor C*-categories with non-simple unit realised as C*-dynamical systems (F,G,β) with a compact (non-Abelian) group G and fixed point algebra A := F^G. We consider C*-dynamical systems with minimal relative commutant of A in F, i.e. A' \cap F = Z, where Z is the center of A which we assume to be nontrivial. We give first several constructions of minimal C*-dynamical systems in terms of a single Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to a suitable Z-bimodule. These examples are labelled by the action of a discrete Abelian group (which we call the chain group) on Z and by the choice of a suitable class of finite dimensional representations of G. Second, we present a construction of a minimal C*-dynamical system with nontrivial Z that also encodes the representation category of G. In this case the C*-algebra F is generated by a family of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras, where the product of the elements in different algebras is twisted by the chain group action. We apply these constructions to the group G = SU(N).

Bundles of C*-algebras and the KK(X;-,-)-bifunctor

An overview about C*-algebra bundles with a Z-grading is presented, with particular emphasis on classification questions. In particular, we discuss the role of the representable KK(X ; -, -)-bifunctor introduced by Kasparov. As an application, we consider Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated with vector bundles, and give a classification in terms of K-theoretical invariants in the case in which the base space is an n-sphere.

Extension of automorphisms to C*-crossed products with non-trivial centre

Given a quasi-special endomorphism $ρ$ of a C*-algebra A with nontrivial center, we study an extension problem for automorphisms of A to a minimal cross-product B of A by $ρ$. Exploiting some aspects of the underlying generalized Doplicher-Roberts duality theory based on Pimsner algebras, an obstruction to the existence of such extensions is found and described in terms of sections of a suitable group bundle.

Some Remarks on Group Bundles and C*-dynamical systems

We introduce the notion of fibred action of a group bundle on a C(X)-algebra. By using such a notion, a characterization in terms of induced C*-bundles is given for C*-dynamical systems such that the relative commutant of the fixed-point algebra is minimal (i.e., it is generated by the centre of the given C*-algebra and the centre of the fixed-point algebra). A class of examples in the setting of the Cuntz algebra is given, and connections with superselection structures with nontrivial centre are discussed.

Crossed Products by Endomorphisms, Vector Bundles and Group Duality

We construct the crossed product of a C(X)-algebra by an endomorphism, in such a way that the endomorphism itself becomes induced by the bimodule of continuous sections of a vector bundle. Some motivating examples for such a construction are given. Furthermore, we study the C*-algebra of G-invariant elements of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated with a G-vector bundle, where G is a (noncompact, in general) group. In particular, the C*-algebra of invariant elements w.r.t. the action of the group of special unitaries of the given vector bundle is a crossed product in the above sense. We also study the analogous construction on certain Hilbert bimodules, called 'noncommutative pullbacks'.

Crossed products by endomorphisms, vector bundles and group duality, II

We study C*-algebra endomorphims which are special in a weaker sense w.r.t. the notion introduced by Doplicher and Roberts. We assign to such endomorphisms a geometrical invariant, representing a cohomological obstruction for them to be special in the usual sense. Moreover, we construct the crossed product of a C*-algebra by the action of the dual of a (nonabelian, noncompact) group of vector bundle automorphisms. These crossed products supply a class of examples for such generalized special endomorphisms.

The C*-algebra of a vector bundle and fields of Cuntz algebras

We study the Pimsner algebra associated with the module of continuous sections of a Hilbert bundle, and prove that it is a continuous bundle of Cuntz algebras. We discuss the role of such Pimsner algebras w.r.t. the notion of inner endomorphism. Furthermore, we study bundles of Cuntz algebras carrying a global circle action, and assign to them a class in the representable KK-group of the zero-grade bundle. We compute such class for the Pimsner algebra of a vector bundle.

Continuous Fields of $C^*$-Algebras Arising from Extensions of Tensor $C^*$-Categories

The notion of extension of a given $C^*$-category $C$ by a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is introduced. In the commutative case $A = C(Ω)$, the objects of the extension category are interpreted as fiber bundles over $Ω$ of objects belonging to the initial category. It is shown that the Doplicher-Roberts algebra (DR-algebra in the following) associated to an object in the extension of a strict tensor $C^*$-category is a continuous field of DR-algebras coming from the initial one. In the case of the category of the hermitian vector bundles over $Ω$ the general result implies that the DR-algebra of a vector bundle is a continuous field of Cuntz algebras. Some applications to Pimsner $C^*$-algebras are given.
