Intrinsic volumes of ellipsoids

We deduce explicit formulae for the intrinsic volumes of an ellipsoid in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 2$, in terms of elliptic integrals. Namely, for an ellipsoid ${\mathcal E}\subset \mathbb R^d$ with semiaxes $a_1,\ldots, a_d$ we show that \begin{align*} V_k({\mathcal E})=κ_k\sum_{i=1}^da_i^2s_{k-1}(a_1^2,\dots,a_{i-1}^2,a_{i+1}^2,\dots,a_d^2)\int_0^{\infty}{t^{k-1}\over(a_i^2t^2+1)\prod_{j=1}^d\sqrt{a_j^2t^2+1}}\,\rm{d}t \end{align*} for all $k=1,\ldots,d$, where $s_{k-1}$ is the $(k-1)$-th elementary symmetric polynomial and $κ_k$ is the volume of the $k$-dimensional unit ball. Some examples of the intrinsic volumes $V_k$ with low and high $k$ are given where our formulae look particularly simple. As an application we derive new formulae for the expected $k$-dimensional volume of random $k$-simplex in an ellipsoid and random Gaussian $k$-simplex.

A solution to a linear integral equation with an application to statistics of infinitely divisible moving averages

For a stationary moving average random field, a non-parametric low frequency estimator of the Lévy density of its infinitely divisible independently scattered integrator measure is given. The plug-in estimate is based on the solution $w$ of the linear integral equation $v(x) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^d} g(s) w(h(s)x)ds$, where $g,h:\mathbb{R}^d \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ are given measurable functions and $v$ is a (weighted) $L^2$-function on $\mathbb{R}$. We investigate conditions for the existence and uniqueness of this solution and give $L^2$-error bounds for the resulting estimates. An application to pure jump moving averages and a simulation study round off the paper.

Long Range Dependence for Stable Random Processes

We investigate long and short memory in $α$-stable moving averages and max-stable processes with $α$-Fréchet marginal distributions. As these processes are heavy-tailed, we rely on the notion of long range dependence suggested by Kulik and Spodarev (2019) based on the covariance of excursions. Sufficient conditions for the long and short range dependence of $α$-stable moving averages are proven in terms of integrability of the corresponding kernel functions. For max-stable processes, the extremal coefficient function is used to state a necessary and sufficient condition for long range dependence.

Long range dependence of heavy tailed random functions

We introduce a definition of long range dependence of random processes and fields on an (unbounded) index space $T\subseteq \R^d$ in terms of integrability of the covariance of indicators that a random function exceeds any given level. This definition is particularly designed to cover the case of random functions with infinite variance. We show the value of this new definition and its connection to limit theorems on some examples including subordinated Gaussian as well as random volatility fields and time series.

Application of Clustering Methods to Anomaly Detection in Fibrous Media

The paper considers the problem of anomaly detection in 3D images of fibre materials. The spatial Stochastic Expectation Maximisation algorithm and Adaptive Weights Clustering are applied to solve this problem. The initial 3D grey scale image was divided into small cubes subject to clustering. For each cube clustering attributes values were calculated: mean local direction and directional entropy. Clustering is conducted according to the given attributes. The proposed methods are tested on the simulated images and on real fibre materials.

Entropy-based inhomogeneity detection in porous media

We study a change-point problem for random fields based on a univariate detection of outliers via the $3σ$-rule in order to recognize inhomogeneities in porous media. In particular, we focus on fibre reinforced polymers modeled by stochastic fibre processes with high fibre intensity and search for abrupt changes in the direction of the fibres. As a measure of change, the entropy of the directional distribution is locally estimated within a window that scans the region to be analyzed.

Estimation of fractal dimension and fractal curvatures from digital images

Most of the known methods for estimating the fractal dimension of fractal sets are based on the evaluation of a single geometric characteristic, e.g. the volume of its parallel sets. We propose a method involving the evaluation of several geometric characteristics, namely all the intrinsic volumes (i.e.\ volume, surface area, Euler characteristic etc.) of the parallel sets of a fractal. Motivated by recent results on their limiting behaviour, we use these functionals to estimate the fractal dimension of sets from digital images. Simultaneously, we also obtain estimates of the fractal curvatures of these sets, some fractal counterpart of intrinsic volumes, allowing a finer classification of fractal sets than by means of fractal dimension only. We show the consistency of our estimators and test them on some digital images of self-similar sets.

Limit theorems for excursion sets of stationary random fields

We give an overview of the recent asymptotic results on the geometry of excursion sets of stationary random fields. Namely, we cover a number of limit theorems of central type for the volume of excursions of stationary (quasi--, positively or negatively) associated random fields with stochastically continuous realizations for a fixed excursion level. This class includes in particular Gaussian, Poisson shot noise, certain infinitely divisible, $α$--stable and max--stable random fields satisfying some extra dependence conditions. Functional limit theorems (with the excursion level being an argument of the limiting Gaussian process) are reviewed as well. For stationary isotropic $C^1$--smooth Gaussian random fields similar results are available also for the surface area of the excursion set. Statistical tests of Gaussianity of a random field which are of importance to real data analysis as well as results for an increasing excursion level round up the paper.

Central limit theorems for the excursion set volumes of weakly dependent random fields

The multivariate central limit theorems (CLT) for the volumes of excursion sets of stationary quasi-associated random fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$ are proved. Special attention is paid to Gaussian and shot noise fields. Formulae for the covariance matrix of the limiting distribution are provided. A statistical version of the CLT is considered as well. Some numerical results are also discussed.

Extrapolation of stable random fields

In this paper, we discuss three extrapolation methods for alpha-stable random fields with 1<alpha<=2. We justify them, giving proofs of the existence and uniqueness of the solutions for each method and providing sufficient conditions for path continuity. Two methods are based on minimizing the variability of the difference between the predictor and the theoretical value, whereas in the third approach we provide a new method that maximizes the covariation between these two quantities.

Set Reconstruction by Voronoi cells

For a Borel set $A$ and a homogeneous Poisson point process $η$ in $\R^d$ of intensity $λ>0$, define the Poisson--Voronoi approximation $ A_η$ of $A$ as a union of all Voronoi cells with nuclei from $η$ lying in $A$. If $A$ has a finite volume and perimeter we find an exact asymptotic of $\E\Vol(AΔA_η)$ as $λ\to\infty$ where $\Vol$ is the Lebesgue measure. Estimates for all moments of $\Vol(A_η)$ and $\Vol(AΔA_η)$ together with their asymptotics for large $λ$ are obtained as well.
