Holographic Higgs Phases

We discuss phases of gauge theories in the holographic context, and formulate a criterion for the existence of a Higgs phase, where the gauge redundancy is "spontaneously broken", in purely bulk language. This condition, the existence of a finite tension solitonic string representing a narrow magnetic flux tube, is necessary for a bulk theory to be interpreted as a Higgs phase of a boundary gauge theory. We demonstrate the existence of such solitons in both top-down and bottom-up examples of holographic theories. In particular, we numerically construct new solitonic solutions in AdS black hole background, for various values of the boundary gauge coupling, which are used to demonstrate that the bulk theory models a superconductor, rather than a superfluid. The criterion we find is expected to be useful in finding holographic duals of color superconducting phases of gauge theories at finite density.

(Non) supersymmetric quantum quenches

We explore supersymmetric quantum quenches of the mass and coupling constants in the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric vector model using Hartee-Fock approximation. We find that in the case of the free fermionic field, quench of the mass generates singularity localized at the instant of sudden change and we point out the essential role of the parity of spacetime. Focusing on a supersymmetric generalization of the $ϕ^6$ model and using stationary phase approximation, we demonstrate that supersymmetry is broken in the asymptotic state that emerges at late times after the quench. Finally, we confirm SUSY breaking in the time-dependent setting by integrating numerically the exact equations of motion from the instant of the quench into asymptotic regime. We argue that the breaking of supersymmetry cannot be attributed to the thermal physics since to leading order in the Hartee-Fock approximation the final state is not thermal.

Holographic Stripes

We construct inhomogeneous asymptotically AdS black hole solutions corresponding to the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance and the formation of striped order in the boundary field theory. We find that the system undergoes a second order phase transition in both the fixed density and fixed chemical potential ensembles, for sufficiently large values of the axion coupling. We investigate the phase structure as function of the temperature, axion coupling and the stripe width. The bulk solutions have striking geometrical features related to a magnetoelectric effect associated with the existence of a near horizon topological insulator. At low temperatures the horizon becomes highly inhomogeneous and tends to pinch off.}

Striped Order in AdS/CFT

We study the formation of inhomogeneous order in the Einstein-Maxwell-axion system, dual to a 2+1 dimensional field theory that exhibits a spontaneously generated current density, momentum density and modulated scalar operator. Below the critical temperature, the Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole becomes unstable and stripes form in the bulk and on the boundary. The bulk geometry possesses striking geometrical features, including a modulated horizon that tends to pinch off as T -> 0. On a domain of fixed length, we find a second order phase transition to the striped solution in each of the grand canonical, canonical and microcanonical ensembles, with modulated charges that grow and saturate as we lower the temperature and descend into the inhomogeneous phase. For the black hole on an infinite domain, a similar second order transition occurs, and the width of the dominant stripe increases in the zero temperature limit.

Modification of late time phase structure by quantum quenches

The consequences of the sudden change in the coupling constants (quenches) on the phase structure of the theory at late times are explored. We study in detail the three dimensional phi^6 model in the large N limit, and show that the phi^6 coupling enjoys a widened range of stability compared to the static scenario. Moreover, a new massive phase emerges, which for sufficiently large coupling becomes the dominant vacuum. We argue that these novel phenomena cannot be described by a simple thermalization effect or the emergence of a single effective temperature.

An axisymmetric generalized harmonic evolution code

We describe the first axisymmetric numerical code based on the generalized harmonic formulation of the Einstein equations which is regular at the axis. We test the code by investigating gravitational collapse of distributions of complex scalar field in a Kaluza-Klein spacetime. One of the key issues of the harmonic formulation is the choice of the gauge source functions, and we conclude that a damped wave gauge is remarkably robust in this case. Our preliminary study indicates that evolution of regular initial data leads to formation both of black holes with spherical and cylindrical horizon topologies. Intriguingly, we find evidence that near threshold for black hole formation the number of outcomes proliferates. Specifically, the collapsing matter splits into individual pulses, two of which travel in the opposite directions along the compact dimension and one which is ejected radially from the axis. Depending on the initial conditions, a curvature singularity develops inside the pulses.

Generalized harmonic formulation in spherical symmetry

In this pedagogically structured article, we describe a generalized harmonic formulation of the Einstein equations in spherical symmetry which is regular at the origin. The generalized harmonic approach has attracted significant attention in numerical relativity over the past few years, especially as applied to the problem of binary inspiral and merger. A key issue when using the technique is the choice of the gauge source functions, and recent work has provided several prescriptions for gauge drivers designed to evolve these functions in a controlled way. We numerically investigate the parameter spaces of some of these drivers in the context of fully non-linear collapse of a real, massless scalar field, and determine nearly optimal parameter settings for specific situations. Surprisingly, we find that many of the drivers that perform well in 3+1 calculations that use Cartesian coordinates, are considerably less effective in spherical symmetry, where some of them are, in fact, unstable.

On critical collapse of gravitational waves

An axisymmetric collapse of non-rotating gravitational waves is numerically investigated in the subcritical regime where no black holes form but where curvature attains a maximum and decreases, following the dispersion of the initial wave packet. We focus on a curvature invariant with dimensions of length, and find that near the threshold for black hole formation it reaches a maximum along concentric rings of finite radius around the axis. In this regime the maximal value of the invariant exhibits a power-law scaling with the approximate exponent 0.38, as a function of a parametric distance from the threshold. In addition, the variation of the curvature in the critical limit is accompanied by increasing amount of echos, with nearly equal temporal and spatial periods. The scaling and the echoing patterns, and the corresponding constants, are independent of the initial data and coordinate choices.

On Black-Brane Instability In an Arbitrary Dimension

The black-hole black-string system is known to exhibit critical dimensions and therefore it is interesting to vary the spacetime dimension $D$, treating it as a parameter of the system. We derive the large $D$ asymptotics of the critical, i.e. marginally stable, string following an earlier numerical analysis. For a background with an arbitrary compactification manifold we give an expression for the critical mass of a corresponding black brane. This expression is completely explicit for ${\bf T}^n$, the $n$ dimensional torus of an arbitrary shape. An indication is given that by employing a higher dimensional torus, rather than a single compact dimension, the total critical dimension above which the nature of the black-brane black-hole phase transition changes from sudden to smooth could be as low as $D\leq 11$.

Formation and Evaporation of Charged Black Holes

We investigate the dynamical formation and evaporation of a spherically symmetric charged black hole. We study the self-consistent one loop order semiclassical back-reaction problem. To this end the mass-evaporation is modeled by an expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of a neutral massless scalar field, while the charge is not radiated away. We observe the formation of an initially non extremal black hole which tends toward the extremal black hole $M=Q$, emitting Hawking radiation. If also the discharge due to the instability of vacuum to pair creation in strong electric fields occurs, then the black hole discharges and evaporates simultaneously and decays regularly until the scale where the semiclassical approximation breaks down. We calculate the rates of the mass and the charge loss and estimate the life-time of the decaying black holes.

Effects of Pair Creation on Charged Gravitational Collapse

We investigate the effects of pair creation on the internal geometry of a black hole, which forms during the gravitational collapse of a charged massless scalar field. Classically, strong central Schwarzschild-like singularity forms, and a null, weak, mass-inflation singularity arises along the Cauchy horizon, in such a collapse. We consider here the discharge, due to pair creation, below the event horizon and its influence on the {\it dynamical formation} of the Cauchy horizon. Within the framework of a simple model we are able to trace numerically the collapse. We find that a part of the Cauchy horizon is replaced by the strong space-like central singularity. This fraction depends on the value of the critical electric field, $E_{\rm cr}$, for the pair creation.
