Heterotic Instantons for Monad and Extension Bundles

We consider non-perturbative superpotentials from world-sheet instantons wrapped on holomorphic genus zero curves in heterotic string theory. These superpotential contributions feature prominently in moduli stabilization and large field axion inflation, which makes their presence or absence, as well as their functional dependence on moduli, an important issue. We develop geometric methods to compute the instanton superpotentials for heterotic string theory with monad and extension bundles. Using our methods, we find a variety of examples with a non-vanishing superpotential. In view of standard vanishing theorems, we speculate that these results are likely to be attributed to the non-compactness of the instanton moduli space. We test this proposal, for the case of monad bundles, by considering gauged linear sigma models where compactness of the instanton moduli space can be explicitly checked. In all such cases, we find that the geometric results are consistent with the vanishing theorems. Surprisingly, linearly dependent Pfaffians even arise for cases with a non-compact instanton moduli space. This suggests some gauged linear sigma models with a non-compact instanton moduli space may still have a vanishing instanton superpotential.

Instantons and Hilbert Functions

We study superpotentials from worldsheet instantons in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications for vector bundles constructed from line bundle sums, monads and extensions. Within a certain class of manifolds and for certain second homology classes, we derive simple necessary conditions for a non-vanishing instanton superpotential. These show that non-vanishing instanton superpotentials are rare and require a specific pattern for the bundle construction. For the class of monad and extension bundles with this pattern, we derive a sufficient criterion for non-vanishing instanton superpotentials based on an affine Hilbert function. This criterion shows that a non-zero instanton superpotential is common within this class. The criterion can be checked using commutative algebra methods only and depends on the topological data defining the Calabi-Yau X and the vector bundle V.

Holomorphic Yukawa Couplings in Heterotic String Theory

We develop techniques, based on differential geometry, to compute holomorphic Yukawa couplings for heterotic line bundle models on Calabi-Yau manifolds defined as complete intersections in projective spaces. It is shown explicitly how these techniques relate to algebraic methods for computing holomorphic Yukawa couplings. We apply our methods to various examples and evaluate the holomorphic Yukawa couplings explicitly as functions of the complex structure moduli. It is shown that the rank of the Yukawa matrix can decrease at specific loci in complex structure moduli space. In particular, we compute the up Yukawa coupling and the singlet-Higgs-lepton trilinear coupling in the heterotic standard model described in arXiv:1404.2767

Yukawa Unification in Heterotic String Theory

We analyze Yukawa unification in the the context of $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic Calabi-Yau models which rely on breaking to a GUT theory via a non-flat gauge bundle and subsequent Wilson line breaking to the standard model. Our focus is on underlying GUT theories with gauge group $SU(5)$ or $SO(10)$. We provide a detailed analysis of the fact that, in contrast to traditional field theory GUTs, the underlying GUT symmetry of these models does not enforce Yukawa unification. Using this formalism, we present various scenarios where Yukawa unification can occur as a consequence of additional symmetries. These additional symmetries arise naturally in some heterotic constructions and we present an explicit heterotic line bundle model which realizes one of these scenarios.

A Heterotic QCD Axion

We show that a KSVZ axion with a decay constant in the phenomenologically allowed range can be obtained in certain $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string models. These models have an enhanced symmetry locus in the moduli space, and a non-universal, Kahler moduli dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos term which vanishes at this locus. Close to this locus the Fayet-Iliopoulos term is small and can lead to an axion decay constant significantly lower than the string scale. In this way, the no-go arguments of Svrcek and Witten, which are based on a universal, dilaton-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos term, can be avoided. The relevant axion originates from phases of bundle moduli which correspond to deformations away from the enhanced symmetry locus. We construct an explicit example, based on a heterotic line bundle standard model, with all the required ingredients.

Implications of N=4 superconformal symmetry in three spacetime dimensions

We study implications of N=4 superconformal symmetry in three dimensions, thus extending our earlier results in arXiv:1503.04961 devoted to the N=1,2,3 cases. We show that the three-point function of the supercurrent in N=4 superconformal field theories contains two linearly independent forms. However, only one of these structures contributes to the three-point function of the energy-momentum tensor and the other one is present in those N=4 superconformal theories which are not invariant under the mirror map. We point out that general N=4 superconformal field theories admit two inequivalent flavour current multiplets and show that the three-point function of each of them is determined by one tensor structure. As an example, we compute the two- and three-point functions of the conserved currents in N=4 superconformal models of free hypermultiplets. We also derive the universal relations between the coefficients appearing in the two- and three-point correlators of the supercurrent and flavour current multiplets in all superconformal theories with N=1,2,3,4 supersymmetry. Our derivation is based on the use of Ward identities in conjunction with superspace reduction techniques.

Superconformal field theory in three dimensions: Correlation functions of conserved currents

For N-extended superconformal field theories in three spacetime dimensions (3D), with N=1,2,3, we compute the two- and three-point correlation functions of the supercurrent and the flavour current multiplets. We demonstrate that supersymmetry imposes additional restrictions on the correlators of conserved currents as compared with the non-supersymmetric case studied by Osborn and Petkou in hep-th/9307010. It is shown that the three-point function of the supercurrent is determined by a single functional form consistent with the conservation equation and all the symmetry properties. Similarly, the three-point function of the flavour current multiplets is also determined by a single functional form in the N=1 and N=3 cases. The specific feature of the N=2 case is that two independent structures are allowed for the three-point function of flavour current multiplets, but only one of them contributes to the three-point function of the conserved currents contained in these multiplets. Since the supergravity and super-Yang-Mills Ward identities are expected to relate the coefficients of the two- and three-point functions under consideration, the results obtained for 3D superconformal field theory are analogous to those in 2D conformal field theory. In addition, we present a new supertwistor construction for compactified Minkowski superspace. It is suitable for developing superconformal field theory on 3D spacetimes other than Minkowski space, such as S^1 x S^2 and its universal covering space R x S^2.

A Heterotic Standard Model with B-L Symmetry and a Stable Proton

We consider heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications with S(U(4)xU(1)) background gauge fields. These models lead to gauge groups with an additional U(1) factor which, under certain conditions, can combine with hypercharge to a B-L symmetry. The associated gauge boson is automatically super-massive and, hence, does not constitute a phenomenological problem. We illustrate this class of compactifications with a model based on the monad construction, which leads to a supersymmetric standard model with three families of quarks and leptons, one pair of Higgs doublets, three right-handed neutrinos and no exotics charged under the standard model group. The presence of the B-L symmetry means that the model is safe from proton decay induced by dimension four operators. Due to the presence of a special locus in moduli space where the bundle structure group is Abelian and the low-energy symmetry enhances we can also show the absence of dimension five proton-decay inducing operators.

Non-generic Couplings in Supersymmetric Standard Models

We study two phases of a heterotic standard model, obtained from a Calabi-Yau compactification of the E8xE8 heterotic string, in the context of the associated four-dimensional effective theories. In the first phase we have a standard model gauge group, an MSSM spectrum, four additional U(1) symmetries and singlet fields. In the second phase, obtained from the first by continuing along the singlet directions, three of the additional U(1) symmetries are spontaneously broken and the remaining one is a B-L symmetry. In this second phase, dimension five operators inducing proton decay are consistent with all symmetries and as such, they are expected to be present. We show that, contrary to this expectation, these operators are forbidden due to the additional U(1) symmetries present in the first phase of the model. We emphasize that such 'unexpected' absences of operators, due to symmetry enhancement at specific loci in the moduli space, can be phenomenologically relevant and, in the present case, protect the model from fast proton decay.

The Moduli Space of Heterotic Line Bundle Models: a Case Study for the Tetra-Quadric

It has recently been realised that polystable, holomorphic sums of line bundles over smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds provide a fertile ground for heterotic model building. Large numbers of phenomenologically promising such models have been constructed for various classes of Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we focus on a case study for the tetra-quadric - a Calabi-Yau hypersurface embedded in a product of four CP1 spaces. We address the question of finiteness of the class of consistent and physically viable line bundle models constructed on this manifold. Further, for a specific semi-realistic example, we explore the embedding of the line bundle sum into the larger moduli space of non-Abelian bundles, both by means of constructing specific polystable non-Abelian bundles and by turning on VEVs in the associated low-energy theory. In this context, we explore the fate of the Higgs doublets as we move in bundle moduli space. The non-Abelian compactifications thus constructed lead to SU(5) GUT models with an additional global B-L symmetry. The non-Abelian compactifications inherit many of the appealing phenomenological features of the Abelian model, such as the absence of dimension four and dimension five operators triggering fast proton decay.

Energy-Spin Trajectories in AdS_5 x S^5 from Semiclassical Vertex Operators

We study the relation between vertex operators in AdS_5 x S^5 and classical spinning string solutions. In the limit of large quantum numbers the treatment of vertex operators becomes semiclassical. In this regime, a given vertex operator carrying a certain set of quantum numbers defines a singular solution. We show in a number of examples that this solution coincides with the classical string solution with the same quantum numbers but written in a different two-dimensional coordinate system. The marginality condition imposed on an operator yields a relation between the energy and the other quantum numbers which is shown to coincide with that of the corresponding classical string solution. We also argue that in some cases vertex operators in AdS_5 x S^5 cannot be given by expressions similar to the ones in flat space and a more involved consideration is required.

Towards Realizing Dynamical SUSY Breaking in Heterotic Model Building

We study a new mechanism to dynamically break supersymmetry in the E8xE8 heterotic string. As discussed recently in the literature, a long-lived, meta-stable non-supersymmetric vacuum can be achieved in an N=1 SQCD whose spectrum contains a sufficient number of light fundamental flavors. In this paper, we present, within the context of the hidden sector of the weakly and strongly coupled heterotic string, a slope-stable, holomorphic vector bundle on a Calabi-Yau threefold for which all matter fields are in the fundamental representation and are massive at generic points in moduli space. It is shown, however, that near certain subvarieties in the moduli space a sufficient number of light matter fields can occur, providing an explicit heterotic model realizing dynamical SUSY breaking. This is demonstrated for the low-energy gauge group Spin(10). However, our methods immediately generalize to Spin(Nc), SU(Nc), and Sp(Nc), for a wide range of color index Nc. Moduli stabilization in vacua with a positive cosmological constant is briefly discussed.

Five-Brane Dynamics and Inflation in Heterotic M-Theory

Generic heterotic M-theory compactifications contain five-branes wrapping non-isolated genus zero or higher genus curves in a Calabi-Yau threefold. Non-perturbative superpotentials do not depend on moduli of such five-branes.We show that fluxes and non-perturbative effects can stabilize them in a non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum. We also show that these five-branes can be stabilized in a dS vacuum, if we modify the supergravity potential energy by Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. This allows us to stabilize all heterotic M-theory moduli in a dS vacuum in the most general compactification scenarios. In addition, we demonstrate that, by this modification, one can create an inflationary potential. The inflationary phase is represented by a five-brane approaching the visible brane. We give a qualitative argument how extra states becoming light, when the five-brane comes too close, can terminate inflation. Eventually, the five-brane hits the visible brane and disappears through a small instanton transition. The post-inflationary system of moduli has simpler stability properties. It can be stabilized in a dS vacuum with a small cosmological constant.

The Dynamics of Small Instanton Phase Transitions

The small instanton transition of a five-brane colliding with one end of the S1/Z2 interval in heterotic M-theory is discussed, with emphasis on the transition moduli, their potential function and the associated non-perturbative superpotential. Using numerical methods, the equations of motion of these moduli coupled to an expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime are solved including non-perturbative interactions. It is shown that the five-brane collides with the end of the interval at a small instanton. However, the moduli then continue to evolve to an isolated minimum of the potential, where they are trapped by gravitational damping. The torsion free sheaf at the small instanton is ``smoothed out'' into a vector bundle at the isolated minimum, thus dynamically completing the small instanton phase transition. Radiative damping at the origin of moduli space is discussed and shown to be insufficient to trap the moduli at the small instanton point.

Superpotentials for Vector Bundle Moduli

We present a method for explicitly computing the non-perturbative superpotentials associated with the vector bundle moduli in heterotic superstrings and M-theory. This method is applicable to any stable, holomorphic vector bundle over an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold. For specificity, the vector bundle moduli superpotential, for a vector bundle with structure group G=SU(3), generated by a heterotic superstring wrapped once over an isolated curve in a Calabi-Yau threefold with base B=F1, is explicitly calculated. Its locus of critical points is discussed. Superpotentials of vector bundle moduli potentially have important implications for small instanton phase transitions and the vacuum stability and cosmology of superstrings and M-theory.

Vector Bundle Moduli Superpotentials in Heterotic Superstrings and M-Theory

The non-perturbative superpotential generated by a heterotic superstring wrapped once around a genus-zero holomorphic curve is proportional to the Pfaffian involving the determinant of a Dirac operator on this curve. We show that the space of zero modes of this Dirac operator is the kernel of a linear mapping that is dependent on the associated vector bundle moduli. By explicitly computing the determinant of this map, one can deduce whether or not the dimension of the space of zero modes vanishes. It is shown that this information is sufficient to completely determine the Pfaffian and, hence, the non-perturbative superpotential as explicit holomorphic functions of the vector bundle moduli. This method is illustrated by a number of non-trivial examples.
