Generic Newton points and the Newton poset in Iwahori double cosets

We consider the Newton stratification on Iwahori double cosets in the loop group of a reductive group. We describe a group-theoretic condition on the generic Newton point, called cordiality, under which the Newton poset (i.e. the index set for non-empty Newton strata) is saturated and Grothendieck's conjecture on closures of the Newton strata holds. Finally, we give several large classes of Iwahori double cosets for which this condition is satisfied by studying certain paths in the associated quantum Bruhat graph.

Finiteness properties of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties

Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are closely related to the special fibre of Newton strata in the reduction of Shimura varieties or of moduli spaces of $G$-shtukas. In almost all cases, they are not quasi-compact. In this note we prove basic finiteness properties of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties under minimal assumptions on the associated group. We show that affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are locally of finite type, and prove a global finiteness result related to the natural group action. Similar results have previously been known for special situations.

Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and the action of J

We propose a new stratification of the reduced subschemes of Rapoport-Zink spaces and of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties that highlights the relation between the geometry of these spaces and the action of the associated automorphism group. We show that this provides a joint group-theoretic interpretation of well-known stratifications which only exist for special cases such as the Bruhat-Tits stratification of Vollaard and Wedhorn, the semi-module stratification of de Jong and Oort, and the locus where the a-invariant is equal to 1.

Connected components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in mixed characteristic

We determine the set of connected components of minuscule affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for special maximal compact subgroups of unramified connected reductive groups. Partial results are also obtained for non-minuscule closed affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We consider both the function field case and its analog in mixed characteristic. In particular, we determine the set of connected components of unramified Rapoport-Zink spaces.

Truncations of level 1 of elements in the loop group of a reductive group

We generalize the notion of Ekedahl-Oort strata to elements in the loop group of any connected reductive group, and call the resulting discrete invariant the truncation of level 1 of the element. We give conditions for the Newton points occurring among the elements of a given truncation of level 1 and especially for the generic Newton point in a given truncation stratum. We prove that truncation strata are locally closed and give a description of the closure of each stratum. We also translate our results back to the original Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the reduction modulo p of Shimura varieties.

Ekedahl-Oort and Newton strata for Shimura varieties of PEL type

We study the Ekedahl-Oort stratification for good reductions of Shimura varieties of PEL type. These generalize the Ekedahl-Oort strata defined and studied by Oort for the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties (the "Siegel case"). They are parameterized by certain elements w in the Weyl group of the reductive group of the Shimura datum. We show that for every such w the corresponding Ekedahl-Oort stratum is smooth, quasi-affine, and of dimension l(w) (and in particular non-empty). Some of these results have previously been obtained by Moonen, Vasiu, and the second author using different methods. We determine the closure relations of the strata. We give a group-theoretical definition of minimal Ekedahl-Oort strata generalizing Oort's definition in the Siegel case and study the question whether each Newton stratum contains a minimal Ekedahl-Oort stratum. We give necessary criteria when a given Ekedahl-Oort stratum and a given Newton stratum meet. We determine which Newton strata are non-empty. This criterion proves conjectures by Fargues and by Rapoport generalizing a conjecture by Manin for the Siegel case.

Foliations in deformation spaces of local G-shtukas

We study local G-shtukas with level structure over a base scheme whose Newton polygons are constant on the base. We show that after a finite base change and after passing to an étale covering, such a local G-shtuka is isogenous to a completely slope divisible one, generalizing corresponding results for p-divisible groups by Oort and Zink. As an application we establish a product structure up to finite morphism on the closed Newton stratum of the universal deformation of a local G-shtuka, similarly to Oort's foliations for p-divisible groups and abelian varieties. This also yields bounds on the dimensions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and proves equidimensionality of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian.

Newton strata in the loop group of a reductive group

We generalize purity of the Newton stratification to purity for a single break point of the Newton point in the context of local G-shtukas respectively of elements of the loop group of a reductive group. As an application we prove that elements of the loop group bounded by a given dominant coweight satisfy a generalization of Grothendieck's conjecture on deformations of p-divisible groups with given Newton polygons.
