Hasse principles for multinorm equations

Let $k$ be a global field and let $L_0$,...,$L_m$ be finite separable field extensions of $k$. In this paper, we are interested in the Hasse principle for the multinorm equation $\underset{i=0}{\overset{m}{\prod}}N_{L_i/k}(t_i)=c$. Under the assumption that $L_0$ is a cyclic extension, we give an explicit description of the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. We also give a complete criterion for the Hasse principle for multinorm equations to hold when $L_0$ is a meta-cyclic extension.

Embeddings of maximal tori in classical groups and Hasse principles

The aim of this note is to revisit the question of local-global principles for embeddings of etale algebras with involution into central simple algebras with involution over global fields of characteristic not 2. A necessary and sufficient condition is given in a joint paper with Tingyu Lee and Raman Parimala. In the present paper, we give a simpler description of the obstruction group. It is also shown that if the etale algebra is a product of pairwise independent field extensions, then the Hasse principle holds.

Patching and Weak Approximation in Isometry Groups

Let $R$ be a semilocal principal ideal domain. Two algebraic objects over $R$ in which scalar extension makes sense (e.g. quadratic spaces) are said to be of the same genus if they become isomorphic after extending scalars to all completions of $R$ and its fraction field. We prove that the number of isomorphism classes in the genus of unimodular quadratic spaces over (non necessarily commutative) $R$-orders is always a finite power of $2$, and under further assumptions, e.g. that the order is hereditary, this number is $1$. The same result is also shown for related objects, e.g. systems of sesquilinear forms. A key ingredient in the proof is a weak approximation theorem for groups of isometries, which is valid over any (topological) base field, and even over semilocal base rings. The appendix proves that the isometry group of a quadratic space over an $R$-order with involution can be regarded as a smooth affine group scheme under mild assumptions.

Embeddings of maximal tori in classical groups and explicit Brauer-Manin obstruction

Embeddings of maximal tori into classical groups over global fields of characteristic not 2 are the subject matter of several recent papers, with special attention to the Hasse principle. The present paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for this embedding problem, and in particular for the Hasse principle to hold. Using work of Borovoi, this is interpreted as a Brauer-Manin type obstruction.

Hasse Principle for G-quadratic forms

Let k be a global field of characteristic not 2. The classical Hasse-Minkowski theorem states that if two quadratic forms become isomorphic over all the completions of k, then they are isomorphic over k as well. It is natural to ask whether this is also true for G-quadratic forms, where G is a finite group. In the case of number fields the Hasse principle for G-quadratic forms does not hold in general, as shown by Jorge Morales. The aim of this paper is to study this question when k is a global field of positive characteristic. We give a sufficient criterion for the Hasse principle to hold, and also counter examples : note that these are of different nature than those for number fields.

Hermitian Categories, Extension of Scalars and Systems of Sesquilinear Forms

We prove that the category of systems of sesquilinear forms over a given hermitian category is equivalent to the category of unimodular 1-hermitian forms over another hermitian category. The sesquilinear forms are not required to be unimodular or defined on a reflexive object (i.e. the standard map from the object to its double dual is not assumed to be bijective), and the forms in the system can be defined with respect to different hermitian structures on the given category. This extends a result obtained by E. Bayer-Fluckiger and D. Moldovan. We use the equivalence to define a Witt ring of sesquilinear forms over a hermitian category, and also to generalize various results (e.g.: Witt's Cancelation Theorem, Springer's Theorem, the weak Hasse principle, finiteness of genus) to systems of sesquilinear forms over hermitian categories.

Hermitian Categories, extension of scalars and systems of hermitian forms

In this paper we define a notion of Witt group for sesquilinear forms in hermitian categories, which in turn provides a notion of Witt group for sesquilinear forms over rings with involution. We also study the extension of scalars for K-linear hermitian categories, where K is a field of characteristic not 2. We finally extend several results concerning sesquilinear forms to the setting of systems of such forms.
