Automorphisms and deformations of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties

We show that regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties can have moduli. To be precise, suppose $X$ is a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety of codimension $1$ in the flag variety $G/B$, where $G$ is a simple algebraic group of rank $r$ over $\mathbb{C}$ and $B$ is a Borel subgroup. We show that the space~$\mathrm{H}^1(X,TX)$ of first order deformations of $X$ has dimension $r-1$ except in type $A_2$. (In type $A_2$, the Hessenberg varieties in question are all isomorphic to the permutohedral toric surface, and $\dim\mathrm{H}^1(X,TX) = 0$.) Moreover, we show that the Kodaira--Spencer map $\mathfrak{g}\to \mathrm{H}^1(X,TX)$ is onto, that the identity component of the automorphism group of $X$ is a maximal torus of $G$, and that $\mathrm{H}^i(X,TX) = 0$ for $i \geq 2$. Along the way, we prove several theorems of independent interest about the cohomology of homogeneous vector bundles on~$G/B$. In type $A$, we can give an even more precise statement determining when two codimension $1$ regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in $G/B$ are isomorphic. We also compute the automorphism groups explicitly in type~$A_{n-1}$ in the terms of stabilizer subgroups of the action of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ on the moduli space $M_{0,n+1}$ of smooth genus $0$ curves with $n + 1$ marked points. Using this, we describe the moduli stack of the regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties $X$ explicitly as a quotient stack of $M_{0,n+1}$. We prove several analogous results for Hessenberg varieties in generalized flag varieties $G/P$, where $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$. In type $A$, these results are used in the proofs of the results for $G/B$, but they are also of independent interest because the associated moduli stacks are related directly to the action of $S_n$ on $M_{0,n}$.

Permutation module decomposition of the second cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety

Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties admit actions of associated Weyl groups on their cohomology space of each degree. In this paper, we consider the module structure of the cohomology spaces of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties of type $A$. We define a subset of the Bialynicki-Birula basis of the cohomology space so that they become a module generator set of the cohomology module of each degree. We then use those generators to construct permutation submodules of the degree two cohomology module and show that they form a permutation module decomposition. Our construction is consistent with a known combinatorial result by Chow on chromatic quasisymmetric functions.

Toric Richardson varieties of Catalan type and Wedderburn-Etherington numbers

We associate a complete non-singular fan with a polygon triangulation. Such a fan appears from a certain toric Richardson variety, called of Catalan type introduced in this paper. A toric Richardson variety of Catalan type is a Fano Bott manifold. We show that toric Richardson varieties of Catalan type are classified up to isomorphism in terms of unordered binary trees. In particular, the number of isomorphism classes of $n$-dimensional toric Richardson varieties of Catalan type is the $(n+1)$th Wedderburn--Etherington number.

On folded cluster patterns of affine type

A cluster algebra is a commutative algebra whose structure is decided by a skew-symmetrizable matrix or a quiver. When a skew-symmetrizable matrix is invariant under an action of a finite group and this action is admissible, the folded cluster algebra is obtained from the original one. Any cluster algebra of non-simply-laced affine type can be obtained by folding a cluster algebra of simply-laced affine type with a specific $G$-action. In this paper, we study the combinatorial properties of quivers in the cluster algebra of affine type. We prove that for any quiver of simply-laced affine type, $G$-invariance and $G$-admissibility are equivalent. This leads us to prove that the set of $G$-invariant seeds forms the folded cluster pattern.

Enumeration of Gelfand-Cetlin type reduced words

The combinatorics of reduced words and commutation classes plays an important role in geometric representation theory. A string polytope is a lattice polytope associated to each reduced word of the longest element $w_0$ in the symmetric group which encodes the character of a certain irreducible representation of a Lie group of type $A$. In this paper, we provide a recursive formula for the number of reduced words of $w_0$ such that the corresponding string polytopes are combinatorially equivalent to a Gelfand-Cetlin polytope. The recursive formula involves the number of standard Young tableaux of shifted shape. We also show that each commutation class is completely determined by a list of quantities called indices.

Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes and hesitant jumping walk avoidance

Let $G$ be a complex simply-laced semisimple algebraic group of rank $r$ and $B$ a Borel subgroup. Let $\mathbf i \in [r]^n$ be a word and let $\mathbf \ell = (\ell_1,\dots,\ell_n)$ be a sequence of non-negative integers. Grossberg and Karshon introduced a virtual lattice polytope associated to $\mathbf i$ and $\mathbf \ell$ called a twisted cube, whose lattice points encode the character of a $B$-representation. More precisely, lattice points in the twisted cube, counted with sign according to a certain density function, yields the character of the generalized Demazure module determined by $\mathbf i$ and $\mathbf \ell$. In recent work, the author and Harada described precisely when the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted, i.e., the twisted cube is a closed convex polytope, in the situation when the integer sequence $\mathbf \ell$ comes from a weight $λ$ of $G$. However, not every integer sequence $\mathbf \ell$ comes from a weight of $G$. In the present paper, we interpret untwistedness of Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes associated to any word $\mathbf i$ and any integer sequence $\mathbf \ell$ using the combinatorics of $\mathbf i$ and $\mathbf \ell$. Indeed, we prove that the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted precisely when $\mathbf i$ is hesitant-jumping-$\mathbf \ell$-walk-avoiding.

Maximum gap in cyclotomic polynomials

Cyclotomic polynomials play fundamental roles in number theory, combinatorics, algebra and their applications. Hence their properties have been extensively investigated. In this paper, we study the maximum gap $g$ (maximum of the differences between any two consecutive exponents). In 2012, it was shown that $g\left( Φ_{p_{1}p_{2}}\right) =p_{1} -1$ for primes $p_{2}>p_{1}$. In 2017, based on numerous calculations, the following generalization was conjectured: $g\left( Φ_{mp}\right) =φ(m)$ for square free odd $m$ and prime $p>m$. The main contribution of this paper is a proof of this conjecture.

On Schubert varieties of complexity one

Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathbb{T}$ a maximal torus contained in $B$. Then $\mathbb{T}$ acts on $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})/B$ and every Schubert variety is $\mathbb{T}$-invariant. We say that a Schubert variety is of complexity $k$ if a maximal $\mathbb{T}$-orbit in $X_w$ has codimension $k$. In this paper, we discuss topology, geometry, and combinatorics related to Schubert varieties of complexity one.

Poincare polynomials of generic torus orbit closures in Schubert varieties

The closure of a generic torus orbit in the flag variety $G/B$ of type $A$ is known to be a permutohedral variety and its Poincare polynomial agrees with the Eulerian polynomial. In this paper, we study the Poincare polynomial of a generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety in $G/B$. When the generic torus orbit closure in a Schubert variety is smooth, its Poincare polynomial is known to agree with a certain generalization of the Eulerian polynomial. We extend this result to an arbitrary generic torus orbit closure which is not necessarily smooth.

Small toric resolutions of toric varieties of string polytopes with small indices

Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. For a reduced word $\bf i$ of the longest element in the Weyl group of $G$ and a dominant integral weight $λ$, one can construct the string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$, whose lattice points encode the character of the irreducible representation $V_λ$. The string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$ is singular in general and combinatorics of string polytopes heavily depends on the choice of $\mathbf i$. In this paper, we study combinatorics of string polytopes when $G = SL_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and present a sufficient condition on $\mathbf i$ such that the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)}$ of the string polytope $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ has a small toric resolution. Indeed, when $\mathbf i$ has small indices and $λ$ is regular, we explicitly construct a small toric resolution of the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$ using a Bott manifold. Our main theorem implies that a toric variety of any string polytope admits a small toric resolution when $n < 4$. As a byproduct, we show that if $\mathbf i$ has small indices then $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ is integral for any dominant integral weight $λ$, which in particular implies that the anticanonical limit toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ_P)}$ of a partial flag variety $G/P$ is Gorenstein Fano. Furthermore, we apply our result to symplectic topology of the full flag manifold $G/B$ and obtain a formula of the disk potential of the Lagrangian torus fibration on $G/B$ obtained from a flat toric degeneration of $G/B$ to the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$.

Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes and hesitant walk avoidance

Let $G$ be a complex semisimple simply connected linear algebraic group. Let $λ$ be a dominant weight for $G$ and $\mathcal{I} = (i_1, i_2, \ldots, i_n)$ a word decomposition for an element $w = s_{i_1} s_{i_2} \cdots s_{i_n}$ of the Weyl group of $G$, where the $s_i$ are the simple reflections. In the 1990s, Grossberg and Karshon introduced a virtual lattice polytope associated to $λ$ and $\mathcal{I}$, which they called a twisted cube, whose lattice points encode (counted with sign according to a density function) characters of representations of $G$. In recent work, the first author and Jihyeon Yang prove that the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted (so the support of the density function is a closed convex polytope) precisely when a certain torus-invariant divisor on a toric variety, constructed from the data of $λ$ and $\mathcal{I}$, is basepoint-free. This corresponds to the situation in which the Grossberg-Karshon character formula is a true combinatorial formula in the sense that there are no terms appearing with a minus sign. In this note, we translate this toric-geometric condition to the combinatorics of $\mathcal{I}$ and $λ$. More precisely, we introduce the notion of hesitant $λ$-walks and then prove that the associated Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted precisely when $\mathcal{I}$ is hesitant-$λ$-walk-avoiding.

Maximum Gap in (Inverse) Cyclotomic Polynomial

Let $g(f)$ denote the maximum of the differences (gaps) between two consecutive exponents occurring in a polynomial $f$. Let $Φ_n$ denote the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial and let $Ψ_n$ denote the $n$-th inverse cyclotomic polynomial. In this note, we study $g(Φ_n)$ and $g(Ψ_n)$ where $n$ is a product of odd primes, say $p_1 < p_2 < p_3$, etc. It is trivial to determine $g(Φ_{p_1})$, $g(Ψ_{p_1})$ and $g(Ψ_{p_1p_2})$. Hence the simplest non-trivial cases are $g(Φ_{p_1p_2})$ and $g(Ψ_{p_1p_2p_3})$. We provide an exact expression for $g(Φ_{p_1p_2}).$ We also provide an exact expression for $g(Ψ_{p_1p_2p_3})$ under a mild condition. The condition is almost always satisfied (only finite exceptions for each $p_1$). We also provide a lower bound and an upper bound for $g(Ψ_{p_1p_2p_3})$.
