Unravelling the Nature of Spin Excitations Disentangled from Charge Contributions in a Doped Cuprate Superconductor

The nature of the spin excitations in superconducting cuprates is a key question toward a unified understanding of the cuprate physics from long-range antiferromagnetism to superconductivity. The intense spin excitations up to the over-doped regime revealed by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering bring new insights as well as questions like how to understand their persistence or their relation to the collective excitations in ordered magnets (magnons). Here, we study the evolution of the spin excitations upon hole-doping the superconducting cuprate Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+δ} by disentangling the spin from the charge excitations in the experimental cross section. We compare our experimental results against density matrix renormalization group calculations for a tt-JJ-like model on a square lattice. Our results unambiguously confirm the persistence of the spin excitations, which are closely connected to the persistence of short-range magnetic correlations up to high doping. This suggests that the spin excitations in hole-doped cuprates are related to magnons -- albeit short-ranged.

Terahertz displacive excitation of a coherent Raman-active phonon in V2_2O3_3

Nonlinear processes involving frequency-mixing of light fields set the basis for ultrafast coherent spectroscopy of collective modes in solids. In certain semimetals and semiconductors, generation of coherent phonon modes can occur by a displacive force on the lattice at the difference-frequency mixing of a laser pulse excitation on the electronic system. Here, as a low-frequency counterpart of this process, we demonstrate that coherent phonon excitations can be induced by the sum-frequency components of an intense terahertz light field, coupled to intraband electronic transitions. This nonlinear process leads to charge-coupled coherent dynamics of Raman-active phonon modes in the strongly correlated metal V2_2O3_3. Our results show a new up-conversion pathway for the optical control of Raman-active modes in solids mediated by terahertz-driven electronic excitation.

Spin dynamics in NaFeAs and NaFe0.53_{0.53}Cu0.47_{0.47}As probed by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

The parent compounds of iron-based superconductors are magnetically-ordered bad metals, with superconductivity appearing near a putative magnetic quantum critical point. The presence of both Hubbard repulsion and Hund's coupling leads to rich physics in these multiorbital systems, and motivated descriptions of magnetism in terms of itinerant electrons or localized spins. The NaFe1−x_{1-x}Cux_xAs series consists of magnetically-ordered bad metal (x=0x=0), superconducting (x≈0.02x\approx0.02) and magnetically-ordered semiconducing/insulating (x≈0.5x\approx0.5) phases, providing a platform to investigate the connection between superconductivity, magnetism and electronic correlations. Here we use X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to study the valence state of Fe and spin dynamics in two NaFe1−x_{1-x}Cux_xAs compounds (x=0x=0 and 0.47). We find that magnetism in both compounds arises from Fe2+^{2+} atoms, and exhibits underdamped dispersive spin waves in their respective ordered states. The dispersion of spin excitations in NaFe0.53_{0.53}Cu0.47_{0.47}As is consistent with being quasi-one-dimensional. Compared to NaFeAs, the band top of spin waves in NaFe0.53_{0.53}Cu0.47_{0.47}As is slightly softened with significantly more spectral weight of the spin excitations. Our results indicate the spin dynamics in NaFe0.53_{0.53}Cu0.47_{0.47}As arise from localized magnetic moments and suggest the iron-based superconductors are proximate to a correlated insulating state with localized iron moments.

Spin-excitation anisotropy in the nematic state of detwinned FeSe

The origin of the electronic nematicity in FeSe is one of the most important unresolved puzzles in the study of iron-based superconductors. In both spin- and orbital-nematic models, the intrinsic magnetic excitations at Q1=(1,0)\mathbf{Q}_1=(1, 0) and Q2=(0,1)\mathbf{Q}_2=(0, 1) of twin-free FeSe are expected to provide decisive criteria for clarifying this issue. Although a spin-fluctuation anisotropy below 10 meV between Q1\mathbf{Q}_1 and Q2\mathbf{Q}_2 has been observed by inelastic neutron scattering around Tc∼9T_c\sim 9 K (<<Ts∼90<<T_s\sim 90 K), it remains unclear whether such an anisotropy also persists at higher energies and associates with the nematic transition TsT_{\rm s}. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the high-energy magnetic excitations of uniaxial-strain detwinned FeSe and {\BFA}. A prominent anisotropy between the magnetic excitations along the HH and KK directions is found to persist to ∼200\sim200 meV in FeSe, which is even more pronounced than the anisotropy of spin waves in {\BFA}. This anisotropy decreases gradually with increasing temperature and finally vanishes at a temperature around the nematic transition temperature TsT_{\rm s}. Our results reveal an unprecedented strong spin-excitation anisotropy with a large energy scale well above the dxz/dyzd_{xz}/d_{yz} orbital splitting, suggesting that the nematic phase transition is primarily spin-driven. Moreover, the measured high-energy spin excitations are dispersive and underdamped, which can be understood from a local-moment perspective. Our findings provide the much-needed understanding of the mechanism for the nematicity of FeSe and points to a unified description of the correlation physics across seemingly distinct classes of Fe-based superconductors.

Orbital dynamics during an ultrafast insulator to metal transition

Phase transitions driven by ultrashort laser pulses have attracted interest both for understanding the fundamental physics of phase transitions and for potential new data storage or device applications. In many cases these transitions involve transient states that are different from those seen in equilibrium. To understand the microscopic properties of these states, it is useful to develop elementally selective probing techniques that operate in the time domain. Here we show fs-time-resolved measurements of V Ledge Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) from the insulating phase of the Mott- Hubbard material V2O3 after ultrafast laser excitation. The probed orbital excitations within the d-shell of the V ion show a sub-ps time response, which evolve at later times to a state that appears electronically indistinguishable from the high-temperature metallic state. Our results demonstrate the potential for RIXS spectroscopy to study the ultrafast orbital dynamics in strongly correlated materials.

Role of the Ce valence in the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism of CeO1−x_{1-x}Fx_{x}BiS2_{2} revealed by Ce L3L_3-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have performed Ce L3L_3-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on CeO1−x_{1-x}Fx_xBiS2_2, in which the superconductivity of the BiS2_2 layer and the ferromagnetism of the CeO1−x_{1-x}Fx_x layer are induced by the F-doping, in order to investigate the impact of the F-doping on the local electronic and lattice structures. The Ce L3L_3-edge XAS spectrum of CeOBiS2_2 exhibits coexistence of 4f14f^1 (Ce3+^{3+}) and 4f04f^0 (Ce4+^{4+}) state transitions revealing Ce mixed valency in this system. The spectral weight of the 4f04f^0 state decreases with the F-doping and completely disappears for x>0.4x>0.4 where the system shows the superconductivity and the ferromagnetism. The results suggest that suppression of Ce-S-Bi coupling channel by the F-doping appears to drive the system from the valence fluctuation regime to the Kondo-like regime, leading to the coexistence of the superconducting BiS2_2 layer and the ferromagnetic CeO1−x_{1-x}Fx_x layer.
