Transport Equation for Small Systems and Nonadditive Entropy

The nonadditive entropy introduced by Tsallis in 1988 has been used in different fields and generalizes the Boltzmann entropy extending the possibilities of application of the statistical methods developed in the context of Mechanics. Here we investigate one of the last points of the theory that still are under discussion: the source term of the nonextensive transport equation. Based on a simple system, we show that the nonadditivity is a direct consequence of the phase space topology, and derive the source term that leads to the nonextensive transport equation.

Tsallis statistics and thermofractals: applications to high energy and hadron physics

We study the applications of non-extensive Tsallis statistics to high energy and hadron physics. These applications include studies of $pp$ collisions, equation of state of QCD, as well as Bose-Einstein condensation. We also analyze the connections of Tsallis statistics with thermofractals, and address some of the conceptual aspects of the fractal approach, which are expressed in terms of the renormalization group equation and the self-energy corrections to the parton mass. We associate these well-known concepts with the origins of the fractal structure in the quantum field theory.

Constitutive relations of a chiral hadronic fluid

We study the role of non-abelian anomalies in relativistic fluids. To this end, we compute the local functional that solves the anomaly equations, and obtain analytical expressions for the covariant currents and the Bardeen-Zumino terms. We particularize these results to a background with two flavors, and consider the cases of unbroken and broken chiral symmetry. Finally, we provide explicit results for the constitutive relations of chiral nuclear matter interacting with external electromagnetic fields and in presence of chiral imbalance. We emphasize the non-dissipative nature of the chiral electric effect.

Fractal structure of Yang-Mills fields

The origin of non-extensive thermodynamics in physical systems has been under intense debate for the last decades. Recent results indicate a connection between non-extensive statistics and thermofractals. After reviewing this connection, we analyze how scaling properties of Yang-Mills theory allow the appearance of self-similar structures in gauge fields. The presence of such structures, which actually behave as fractals, allows for recurrent non-perturbative calculations of vertices. It is argued that when a statistical approach is used, the non-extensive statistics is obtained, and the Tsallis entropic index, $q$, is deduced in terms of the field theory parameters. The results are applied to QCD in the one-loop approximation, resulting in a good agreement with the value of $q$ obtained experimentally.

Fractal Structures of Yang-Mills Fields and Non Extensive Statistics: Applications to High Energy Physics

In this work, we provide an overview of the recent investigations on the non-extensive Tsallis statistics and its applications to high energy physics and astrophysics, including physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), hadron physics, and neutron stars. We review some recent investigations on the power-law distributions arising in high energy physics experiments focusing on a thermodynamic description of the system formed, which~could explain the power-law behavior. The possible connections with a fractal structure of hadrons is also discussed. The main objective of the present work is to delineate the state-of-the-art of those studies and~show some open issues that deserve more careful investigation. We propose several possibilities to test the theory through analyses of experimental data.

Gravitational Imprints from Heavy Kaluza-Klein Resonances

We systematically study the holographic phase transition of the radion field in a five-dimensional warped model which includes a scalar potential with a power-like behavior. We consider Kaluza-Klein (KK) resonances with masses $m_{\rm KK}$ at the TeV scale or beyond. The backreaction of the radion field on the gravitational metric is taken into account by using the superpotential formalism. The confinement/deconfinement first order phase transition leads to a gravitational wave stochastic background which mainly depends on the scale $m_{\rm KK}$ and the number of colors, $N$, in the dual theory. Its power spectrum peaks at a frequency that depends on the amount of tuning required in the electroweak sector. It turns out that the present and forthcoming gravitational wave observatories can probe scenarios where the KK resonances are very heavy. Current aLIGO data already rule out vector boson KK resonances with masses in the interval $m_{\rm KK}\sim(1 - 10) \times 10^5$ TeV. Future gravitational experiments will be sensitive to resonances with masses $m_{\rm KK}\lesssim 10^5$ TeV (LISA), $10^8$ TeV (aLIGO Design) and $10^9$ TeV (ET). Finally, we also find that the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bound in the frequency spectrum turns into a lower bound for the nucleation temperature as $T_n \gtrsim 10^{-4}\sqrt{N} \,m_{\rm KK}$.

On gapped continuum resonance spectra

In this work we study a warped five-dimensional (5D) model with ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) branes, that solves the hierarchy problem with a fundamental 5D Planck scale $M$, and curvature parameter $k$, of the order of the 4D Planck mass $M_{\textrm{Planck}}\equiv 2.4\times 10^{15}$ TeV. The model exhibits a continuum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes with different mass gaps, at the TeV scale, for all fields. We have computed the Green's functions and spectral densities, and shown how the presence of a continuum KK spectrum can produce an enhancement in the cross section of some Standard Model processes. The metric is linear near the IR, in conformal coordinates, as in the linear dilaton and 5D clockwork models, for which $M\sim$ TeV. We also analyze a pure (continuum) linear dilaton scenario, solving the hierarchy problem with more conventional fundamental $M$ and $k$ scales of the order of $M_{\textrm{Planck}}$, and a continuum spectrum.

Bag-type Model with Fractal Structure

In this work we present a bag-type model within a non-extensive statistics applied to the description of the properties of a hadronic system with an underlying fractal structure. The non-extensive ideal gas inside the bag is determined by the grand canonical partition function from which pressure, energy and particle density as well as temperature and chemical potential are obtained for the hadronic system. These quantities are studied in the approximation of fixed mass for all bag constituents but also for discrete and continuum masses. In all cases, the freeze-out line, corresponding to the energy per particle equal to 1 GeV and the lines corresponding to a fractal structure inside the proton volume are obtained. Finally, the pressure on the bag surface of the proton is calculated and the resulting value $(0.135\, {\rm GeV})^4$ obtained.

Fractals, non-extensive statistics and QCD

In this work we analyse how scaling properties of Yang-Mills field theory manifest as self-similarity of truncated n-point functions by scale evolution. The presence of such structures, which actually behaves as fractals, allow for recurrent non-perturbative calculation of any vertex. Some general properties are indeed independent of the perturbative order, what simplifies the non-perturbative calculations. We show that for sufficiently high perturbative orders a statistical approach can be used, the non extensive statistics is obtained, and the Tsallis index, $q$, is deduced in terms of the field theory parameters. The results are applied to QCD in the one-loop approximation, where $q$ can be calculated, resulting in a good agreement with the value obtained experimentally. We discuss how this approach allows to understand some intriguing experimental findings in high energy collisions, as the behavior of multiplicity against collision energy, long-tail distributions and the fractal dimension observed in intermittency analysis.

Efectos de Temperatura Finita y Curvatura en QCD y Modelos de Quarks Quirales

We develop the heat kernel method in the context of finite temperature quantum field theory. We compute the heat kernel expansion in the presence of general gauge and scalar fields which may be non Abelian and non stationary. The Polyakov loop appears at finite temperature as a new gauge covariant operator. We apply this method in the computation of the fully gauge invariant effective action of QCD in the regime of high temperature. It is obtained the dimensionally reduced effective action of QCD as well. In the context of chiral quark models, in particular the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio and the spectral quark model, we apply this method to compute the low-energy chiral Lagrangian at finite temperature. The coupling of the Polyakov loop with these models allows to solve some inconsistencies appearing in the standard treatment at finite temperature: generation of multi-quark states, large $N_c$ counting, etc. On the other hand, we show that recent available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop above the deconfinement phase transition exhibit unequivocal inverse power temperature corrections driven by a dimension 2 gluon condensate. This simple ansatz provides a good overall description of the data throughout the deconfinement phase until near the critical temperature with just two parameters. Finally, we study several chiral quark models in the light of chiral perturbation theory in curved space-time. The low energy structure of the energy momentum tensor in these models with SU(3) flavor symmetry is analyzed in the presence of external gravitational fields.

Light dilatons in warped space: Higgs boson and LHCb anomalies

We study the extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a light dilaton in a five dimensional warped model. In particular, we analyze the coupling of the dilaton with the SM matter fields, compare the model predictions with Electroweak Precisions Tests and find the corresponding bounds on the mass of the lightest Kaluza-Klein modes. We also investigate the possibility that the Higgs-like resonance found at the LHC can be a dilaton. Finally, we show that our set-up can also provide an explanation of the anomalies recently observed in $B$-meson decays.

On dilatons and the LHC diphoton excess

We study soft wall models that can embed the Standard Model and a naturally light dilaton. Exploiting the full capabilities of these models we identify the parameter space that allows to pass Electroweak Precision Tests with a moderate Kaluza-Klein scale, around $2$ TeV. We analyze the coupling of the dilaton with Standard Model (SM) fields in the bulk, and discuss two applications: i) Models with a light dilaton as the first particle beyond the SM pass quite easily all observational tests even with a dilaton lighter than the Higgs. However the possibility of a 125 GeV dilaton as a Higgs impostor is essentially disfavored; ii) We show how to extend the soft wall models to realize a 750 GeV dilaton that could explain the recently reported diphoton excess at the LHC.

Thermal shifts, fluctuations, and missing states

Thermal shifts and fluctuations at finite temperature below the deconfinement crossover from hadronic matter to the quark-gluon plasma provide a viable way to search for missing states with given quantum numbers in the hadronic spectrum. We analyze three realizations of the hadron resonance gas model in the light quark (uds) sector: the states from the Particle Data Group tables with or without width and from the Relativized Quark Model. We elaborate on the meaning of hadronic completeness and thermodynamical equivalence on the light of lattice QCD trace anomaly, heavy quark entropy shift and baryon, charge and strangeness susceptibilities.

A holographic realization of light dilatons

We study a realization of light dilatons by considering Conformal Field Theories deformed by a nearly marginal operator ${\cal O}$. This is discussed in the holographic setup consisting of Renormalization Group flows that end on a soft wall. We obtain a mass formula for the dilaton as an average along the flow. Finally we discuss the holographic method to compute the condensate $\langle {\cal O} \rangle$.

On light dilaton extensions of the Standard Model

We discuss the presence of a light dilaton in Conformal Field Theories deformed by a single scalar operator, in the holographic realization consisting of confining Renormalization Group flows. Then, we apply this formalism to study the extension of the Standard Model with a light dilaton in a 5D warped model. We study the spectrum of scalar and vector perturbations, compare the model predictions with Electroweak Precision Tests and find the corresponding bounds for the lightest modes. Finally, we analyze the possibility that the Higgs resonance found at the LHC be a dilaton.

Frequency dependence of the Chiral Vortical Effect

We study the frequency dependence of all the chiral vortical and magnetic conductivities for a relativistic gas of free chiral fermions and for a strongly coupled conformal field theory with holographic dual in four dimensions. Both systems have gauge and gravitational anomalies, and we compute their contribution to the conductivities. The chiral vortical conductivities and the chiral magnetic conductivity in the energy current show a frequency dependence in the form of a delta centered at zero frequency. This highly discontinuous behavior is a natural consequence of the Ward identities that include the energy momentum tensor. We discuss the physical interpretation of this result and its possible implications for the quark gluon plasma as created in heavy ion collisions. In the Appendix we discuss why the chiral magnetic effect seems to vanish in the consistent current for a particular implementation of the axial chemical potential.

Naturally light dilatons from nearly marginal deformations

We discuss the presence of a light dilaton in CFTs deformed by a nearly-marginal operator O, in the holographic realizations consisting of confining RG flows that end on a soft wall. Generically, the deformations induce a condensate <O>, and the dilaton mode can be identified as the fluctuation of <O>. We obtain a mass formula for the dilaton as a certain average along the RG flow. The dilaton is naturally light whenever i) confinement is reached fast enough (such as via the condensation of O) and ii) the beta function is small (walking) at the condensation scale. These conditions are satisfied for a class of models with a bulk pseudo-Goldstone boson whose potential is nearly flat at small field and exponential at large field values. Thus, the recent observation by Contino, Pomarol and Rattazzi holds in CFTs with a single nearly-marginal operator. We also discuss the holographic method to compute the condensate <O>, based on solving the first-order nonlinear differential equation that the beta function satisfies.

Nonextensive thermodynamics for hadrons with finite chemical potentials

The non extensive thermodynamics of an ideal gas composed by bosons and/or fermions is derived from its partition function for systems with finite chemical potentials. It is shown that the thermodynamical quantities derived in the present work are in agreement with those obtained in previous works when $μ\le m$. However some inconsistencies of previous references are corrected when $μ> m$. A discontinuity in the first derivatives of the partition function and its effects are discussed in detail. We show that at similar conditions, the non extensive statistics provide a harder equation of state than that provided by the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics.

Nonextensive thermodynamics with finite chemical potentials and protoneutron stars

We derive the nonextensive thermodynamics of an ideal quantum gas composed by bosons and/or fermions with finite chemical potentials. We find agreement with previous works when $μ\le m$, and some inconsistencies are corrected for fermions when $μ> m$. This formalism is then used to study the thermodynamical properties of hadronic systems based on a Hadron Resonance Gas approach. We apply this result to study the protoneutron star stability under several conditions.

Second-order partition function of a non-interacting chiral fluid in 3+1 dimensions

We compute the partition function for non-interacting chiral fermions at second order in a derivative expansion of an arbitrary time-independent gravitational and gauge background. We find that Pauli-Villars regularization of the vacuum part is needed to get consistent results. We use our results to discuss some features of the non-dissipative constitutive relations of second order hydrodynamics.

Fluid/Gravity Correspondence, Second Order Transport and Gravitational Anomaly

We study the transport properties of a relativistic fluid affected by chiral and gauge-gravitational anomalies. The computation is performed in the framework of the fluid/gravity correspondence for a 5 dim holographic model with Chern-Simons terms in the action. We find new anomalous and non anomalous transport coefficients, as well as new contributions to the existing ones coming from the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly. Consequences for the shear waves dispersion relation are analyzed.

Holographic Gravitational Anomaly in First and Second Order Hydrodynamics

We compute, in the framework of the fluid/gravity correspondence, the transport coefficients of a relativistic fluid affected by chiral and gauge-gravitational anomalies, including external electromagnetic fields. The computation is performed at first and second order in the hydrodynamical expansion. We use a 5-dim holographic model with pure gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons terms in the action. We reproduce at first order previous results on the anomaly induced current of a magnetic field and a vortex in a relativistic fluid, and compute at second order the anomalous and non anomalous transport coefficients by using a Weyl covariant formalism. We find a dissipative and anomalous correction to the chiral magnetic conductivity due to the time dependence of the magnetic field. We also find a new contribution from the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly to the shear waves dispersion relation. The role played by the chiral and gravitational anomalies in other transport coefficients is discussed.

Anomalies and Transport Coefficients: The Chiral Gravito-Magnetic Effect

Axial anomalies give rise to interesting new transport phenomena such as the "chiral magnetic effect". We discuss how the associated transport coefficients can be studied via Kubo formulas at weak and strong coupling, the latter via gauge gravity duality. We argue for a new "chiral gravito-magnetic" (or vortical) effect sensitive to the presence of mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies.

preprint2011arXiv

Gravitational Anomaly and Hydrodynamics

We study the anomalous induced current of a vortex in a relativistic fluid via the chiral vortical effect, which is analogous to the anomalous current induced by a magnetic field via the chiral magnetic effect. We perform this analysis at weak and strong coupling. We discuss inequivalent implementations to the chemical potential for an anomalous symmetry. At strong coupling we use a holographic model with a pure gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term in the action. We discuss the holographic renormalization and show that the Chern-Simons terms do not induce new divergences. Strong and weak coupling results agree precisely. We also point out that the holographic calculation can be done without a singular gauge field configuration on the horizon of the black hole.

preprint2011arXiv

Gravitational Anomaly and Transport

Quantum anomalies give rise to new transport phenomena. In particular a magnetic field can induce an anomalous current via the chiral magnetic effect and a vortex in the relativistic fluid can also induce a current via the chiral vortical effect. The related transport coefficients can be calculated via Kubo formulas. We evaluate the Kubo formula for the anomalous vortical conductivity at weak coupling and show that it receives contributions proportional to the gravitational anomaly coefficient. The gravitational anomaly gives rise to an anomalous vortical effect even for an uncharged fluid.

Holographic Gravitational Anomaly and Chiral Vortical Effect

We analyze a holographic model with a pure gauge and a mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term in the action. These are the holographic implementations of the usual chiral and the mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies in four dimensional field theories with chiral fermions. We discuss the holographic renormalization and show that the gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term does not induce new divergences. In order to cancel contributions from the extrinsic curvature at a boundary at finite distance a new type of counterterm has to be added however. This counterterm can also serve to make the Dirichlet problem well defined in case the gauge field strength vanishes on the boundary. A charged asymptotically AdS black hole is a solution to the theory and as an application we compute the chiral magnetic and chiral vortical conductivities via Kubo formulas. We find that the characteristic term proportional to T^2 is present also at strong coupling and that its numerical value is not renormalized compared to the weak coupling result.
