Localized magnetic moments in a Dirac semimetal as a spin model with long--range interactions

We connect between the problem of thermodynamics of localized magnetic moments in a Dirac semimetal, the interaction with relativistic electrons leading to the effective ferromagnetic exchange between the moments, and the existing theories dealing with long--range exchange interaction. We point out that the results of high--temperature expansion for the free energy of a dilute ensemble of magnetic impurities in the semimetal performed by V. Cheianov et al. (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 86}, 054424 (2012)) give an indication to the existence of a new disordered fixed point in such model.

Density-dependent thermopower oscillations in mesoscopic two-dimensional electron gases

We present thermopower $S$ and resistance $R$ measurements on GaAs-based mesoscopic two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) as functions of the electron density $n_s$. At high $n_s$ we observe good agreement between the measured $S$ and $S_{\rm{MOTT}}$, the Mott prediction for a non-interacting metal. As $n_s$ is lowered, we observe a crossover from Mott-like behaviour to that where $S$ shows strong oscillations and even sign changes. Remarkably, there are absolutely no features in $R$ corresponding to those in $S$. In fact, $R$ is devoid of even any universal conductance fluctuations. A statistical analysis of the thermopower oscillations from two devices of dissimilar dimensions suggest a universal nature of the oscillations. We critically examine whether they can be mesoscopic fluctuations of the kind described by Lesovik and Khmelnitskii in Sov. Phys. JETP. \textbf{67}, 957 (1988).

Absence of weak antilocalization in ferromagnetic films

We present magnetoresistance measurements performed on ultrathin films of amorphous Ni and Fe. In these films the Curie temperature drops to zero at small thickness, making it possible to study the effect of ferromagnetism on localization. We find that non-ferromagnetic films are characterized by positive magnetoresistance. This is interpreted as resulting from weak antilocalization due to strong Bychkov-Rashba spin orbit scattering. As the films become ferromagnetic the magnetoresistance changes sign and becomes negative. We analyze our data to identify the individual contributions of weak localization, weak antilocalization and anisotropic magnetoresistance and conclude that the magnetic order suppresses the influence of spin-orbit effects on localization phenomena in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Ground state of a double-exchange system containing impurities: bounds of ferromagnetism

We study the boundary between ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic ground state of a double-exchange system with quenched disorder for arbitrary relation between Hund exchange coupling and electron band width. The boundary is found both from the solution of the Dynamical Mean Field Approximation equations and from the comparison of the energies of the saturated ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states. Both methods give very similar results. To explain the disappearance of ferromagnetism in part of the parameter space we derive from the double-exchange Hamiltonian with classical localized spins in the limit of large but finite Hund exchange coupling the $t-J$ model (with classical localized spins).

Ferromagnetic transition in a double-exchange system

We study ferromagnetic transition in three-dimensional double-exchange model. The influence of strong spin fluctuations on conduction electrons is described in coherent potential approximation. In the framework of thermodynamic approach we construct for the system "electrons (in a disordered spin configuration) + spins" the Landau functional, from the analysis of which critical temperature of ferromagnetic transition is calculated.
