Relating B_s Mixing and B_s -> mu+mu- with New Physics

We perform a study of the Standard Model (SM) fit to the mixing quantities $ΔM_{B_s}$, and $ΔΓ_{B_s}/ΔM_{B_s}$ in order to bound contributions of New Physics to $B_s$ mixing. We then use this to explore the branching fraction of $B_{s} \to μ^+μ^-$ in certain models of New Physics (NP). In most cases, this constrains NP amplitudes for $B_{s} \to μ^+μ^-$ to lie below the SM component.

Short Distance Analysis of D^0-anti-D^0 Mixing

We study the Standard Model short-distance prediction for the mass and lifetime differences between the two neutral D meson mass eigenstates. We find that, despite α_s/4πsuppression, next-to-leading order (NLO) short-distance QCD corrections exceed the corresponding leading order (LO) amplitudes. For the lifetime difference, this stems from the lifting of helicity suppression of a light-quark intermediate state. We find y_D is given by y_NLO to a reasonable approximation but x_D is greatly affected by destructive interference between x_LO and x_NLO. The net effect is to render y_D ~ x_D ~ 6 x 10^{-7}. Our NLO short-distance results, still smaller than most long-distance estimates, depend on the same two nonperturbative matrix elements of four-quark operators as in leading order.

Improved Determination of the Electroweak Penguin Contribution to epsilon'/epsilon in the Chiral Limit

We perform a finite energy sum rule analysis of the flavor ud two-point V-A current correlator, Delta Pi (Q^2). The analysis, which is performed using both the ALEPH and OPAL databases for the V-A spectral function, Delta rho, allows us to extract the dimension six V-A OPE coefficient, a_6, which is related to the matrix element of the electroweak penguin operator, Q_8, by chiral symmetry. The result for a_6 leads directly to the improved (chiral limit) determination epsilon'/epsilon = (- 15.0 +- 2.7) 10^{-4}. Determination of higher dimension OPE contributions also allows us to perform an independent test using a low-scale constrained dispersive analysis, which provides a highly nontrivial consistency check of the results.

Dimension-eight Operators in the Weak OPE

We expose a potential flaw in standard treatments of weak decay amplitudes, including that of epsilon'/epsilon. We show that (contrary to conventional wisdom) dimension-eight operators do contribute to weak amplitudes, at order G_F alpha_s and without 1/M_W^2 suppression. We demonstrate the existence of these operators with a simple weak hamiltonian and proceed to discuss their contribution in a general context. We estimate the effect of dimension-eight operators to be at the 100% level in a sum rule determination of the operator O_7 for mu = 1.5 GeV, suggesting presently available values of mu are too low to justify neglect of these effects.

K -> pi pi Phenomenology in the Presence of Electromagnetism

We describe the influence of electromagnetism on the phenomenology of K -> pi pi decays. This is required because the present data were analyzed without inclusion of electromagnetic radiative corrections, and hence contain several ambiguities and uncertainties which we describe in detail. Our presentation includes a full description of the infrared effects needed for a new experimental analysis. It also describes the general treatment of final state interaction phases, needed because Watson's theorem is no longer valid in the presence of electromagnetism. The phase of the isospin-two amplitude A_2 may be modified by 50% -> 100%. We provide a tentative analysis using present data in order to illustrate the sensitivity to electromagnetic effects, and also discuss how the standard treatment of epsilon'/epsilon is modified.

Radiative Weak Decays of Charm Mesons

We address Standard Model predictions for flavor-changing radiative transitions of the pseudoscalar charm mesons. Short-distance contributions in $D$ radiative transitions are contrasted with those in B decays. A full analysis is presented of the $c\to u+γ$ electromagnetic penguin amplitude with QCD radiative corrections included. Given the importance of long-range effects for the charm sector, special attention is paid to such contributions as the vector dominance and pole amplitudes. A number of two-body final states in exclusive charm radiative decays is considered and the corresponding branching ratio predictions are given.
