High-harmonic generation enhancement with graphene heterostructures

We investigate high-harmonic generation in graphene heterostructures consisting of metallic nanoribbons separated from a graphene sheet by either a few-nanometer layer of aluminum oxide or an atomic monolayer of hexagonal boron nitride. The nanoribbons amplify the near-field at the graphene layer relative to the externally applied pumping, thus allowing us to observe third- and fifth-harmonic generation in the carbon monolayer at modest pump powers in the mid-infrared. We study the dependence of the nonlinear signals on the ribbon width and spacer thickness, as well as pump power and polarization, and demonstrate enhancement factors relative to bare graphene reaching 1600 and 4100 for third- and fifth-harmonic generation, respectively. Our work supports the use of graphene heterostructures to selectively enhance specific nonlinear processes of interest, an essential capability for the design of nanoscale nonlinear devices.

Subwavelength THz imaging of graphene photoconductivity

Using a spatially structured, optical pump pulse with a THz probe pulse, we are able to determine spatial variations of the ultrafast THz photoconductivity with sub-wavelength resolution (75 $μm \approx λ/5$ at 0.8 THz) in a planar graphene sample. We compare our results to Raman spectroscopy and correlate the existence of the spatial inhomogeneities between the two measurements. We find a strong correlation with inhomogeneity in electron density. This demonstrates the importance of eliminating inhomogeneities in doping density during CVD growth and fabrication for photoconductive devices.

The Roles of Substrate vs Nonlocal Optical Nonlinearities in the Excitation of Surface Plasmons in Graphene

It has recently been demonstrated that difference frequency mixing (DFM) can generate surface plasmons in graphene [1]. Here, we present detailed calculations comparing the contributions to this effect from substrate and from graphene nonlinearities. Our calculations show that the substrate (quartz) nonlinearity gives rise to a surface plasmon intensity that is around twelve orders of magnitude smaller than that arising from the intrinsic graphene response. This surprisingly efficient intrinsic process, given the centrosymmetric structure of graphene, arises almost entirely due to non-local contributions to the second order optical nonlinearity of graphene.

All-Optical Generation of Surface Plasmons in Graphene

Here we present an all-optical plasmon coupling scheme, utilising the intrinsic nonlinear optical response of graphene. We demonstrate coupling of free-space, visible light pulses to the surface plasmons in a planar, un-patterned graphene sheet by using nonlinear wave mixing to match both the wavevector and energy of the surface wave. By carefully controlling the phase-matching conditions, we show that one can excite surface plasmons with a defined wavevector and direction across a large frequency range, with an estimated photon efficiency in our experiments approaching $10^{-5}$.
