Loskot-Rudnicki's inequality and General Relative Entropy inequality for Cauchy problems preserving positivity

The Generalized Relative Entropy inequality is a ubiquitous property in mathematical models applied in physics or biology. In spite of its importance, it is currently proved on a case-by-case basis in the literature. Here, we show that GRE is actually a generic consequence of Loskot-Rudnicki's inequality that is reminiscent of Jensen's inequality.

Asynchronous exponential growth of the growth-fragmentation equation with unbounded fragmentation rate

The objective is to prove the asynchronous exponential growth of the growth-fragmentation equation in large weighted $L^1$ spaces and under general assumptions on the coefficients. The key argument is the creation of moments for the solutions to the Cauchy problem, resulting from the unboundedness of the total fragmentation rate. It allows us to prove the quasi-compactness of the associated (rescaled) semigroup, which in turn provides the exponential convergence toward the projector on the Perron eigenfunction.

The Diffusion Approximation for the Linear Boltzmann Equation with Vanishing Scattering Coefficient

The present paper discusses the diffusion approximation of the linear Boltzmann equation in cases where the collision frequency is not uniformly large in the spatial domain. Our results apply for instance to the case of radiative transfer in a composite medium with optically thin inclusions in an optically thick background medium. The equation governing the evolution of the approximate particle density coincides with the limit of the diffusion equation with infinite diffusion coefficient in the optically thin inclusions.

Homogenization of the linear Boltzmann equation in a domain with a periodic distribution of holes

Consider a linear Boltzmann equation posed on the Euclidian plane with a periodic system of circular holes and for particles moving at speed 1. Assuming that the holes are absorbing -- i.e. that particles falling in a hole remain trapped there forever, we discuss the homogenization limit of that equation in the case where the reciprocal number of holes per unit surface and the length of the circumference of each hole are asymptotically equivalent small quantities. We show that the mass loss rate due to particles falling into the holes is governed by a renewal equation that involves the distribution of free-path lengths for the periodic Lorentz gas. In particular, it is proved that the total mass of the particle system at time t decays exponentially fast as t tends to infinity. This is at variance with the collisionless case discussed in [Caglioti, E., Golse, F., Commun. Math. Phys. 236 (2003), pp. 199--221], where the total mass decays as Const./t as the time variable t tends to infinity.
