Asymptotic probability of energy increasing solutions to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation

Weak solutions to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with increasing energy have been constructed by Lu and Wennberg. We consider an underlying microscopic stochastic model with binary collision (Kac's model) and show that these solutions are atypical. More precisely, we prove that the probability of observing these paths is exponentially small in the number of particles and compute the exponential rate. This result is obtained by improving the established large deviation estimates in the canonical setting. Key ingredients are the extension of Sanov's theorem to the microcanonical ensemble and large deviations for the Kac's model in the microcanonical setting.

Towards Optimal Transport for Quantum Densities

An analogue of the quadratic Wasserstein (or Monge-Kantorovich) distance between Borel probability measures on $\mathbf{R}^d$ has been defined in [F. Golse, C. Mouhot, T. Paul: Commun. Math. Phys. 343 (2015), 165-205] for density operators on $L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$, and used to estimate the convergence rate of various asymptotic theories in the context of quantum mechanics. The present work proves a Kantorovich type duality theorem for this quantum variant of the Monge-Kantorovich or Wasserstein distance, and discusses the structure of optimal quantum couplings. Specifically, we prove that optimal quantum couplings involve a gradient type structure similar to the Brenier transport map (which is the gradient of a convex function), or more generally, to the subdifferential of a l.s.c. convex function as in the Knott-Smith optimality criterion (see Theorem 2.12 in [C. Villani: "Topics in Optimal Transportation", Amer. Math. Soc. 2003]).

Euclidean random matching in 2D for non-constant densities

We consider the 2-dimensional random matching problem in $\mathbb{R}^2.$ In a challenging paper, Caracciolo et. al. arXiv:1402.6993 on the basis of a subtle linearization of the Monge Ampere equation, conjectured that the expected value of the square of the Wasserstein distance, with exponent $2,$ between two samples of $N$ uniformly distributed points in the unit square is $\log N/2πN$ plus corrections, while the expected value of the square of the Wasserstein distance between one sample of $N$ uniformly distributed points and the uniform measure on the square is $\log N/4πN$. These conjectures has been proved by Ambrosio et al. arXiv:1611.04960. Here we consider the case in which the points are sampled from a non uniform density. For first we give formal arguments leading to the conjecture that if the density is regular and positive in a regular, bounded and connected domain $Λ$ in the plane, then the leading term of the expected values of the Wasserstein distances are exactly the same as in the case of uniform density, but for the multiplicative factor equal to the measure of $Λ$. We do not prove these results but, in the case in which the domain is a square, we prove estimates from above that coincides with the conjectured result.

Translation invariant realizability problem on the $d-$dimensional lattice: an explicit construction

We consider a particular instance of the truncated realizability problem on the $d-$dimensional lattice. Namely, given two functions $ρ_1({\bf i})$ and $ρ_2({\bf i},{\bf j})$ non-negative and symmetric on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, we ask whether they are the first two correlation functions of a translation invariant point process. We provide an explicit construction of such a realizing process for any $d\geq 2$ when the radial distribution has a specific form. We also derive from this construction a lower bound for the maximal realizable density and compare it with the already known lower bounds.

A gradient flow approach to quantization of measures

In this paper we study a gradient flow approach to the problem of quantization of measures in one dimension. By embedding our problem in $L^2$, we find a continuous version of it that corresponds to the limit as the number of particles tends to infinity. Under some suitable regularity assumptions on the density, we prove uniform stability and quantitative convergence result for the discrete and continuous dynamics.

Dephasing of Kuramoto oscillators in kinetic regime towards a fixed asymptotically free state

We study the kinetic Kuramoto model for coupled oscillators. We prove that for any regular asymptotically free state, if the interaction is small enough, it exists a solution which is asymptotically close to it. For this class of solution the order parameter vanishes to zero, showing a behavior similar to the phenomenon of Landau damping in plasma physics. We obtain an exponential decay of the order parameter in the case on analytical regularity of the asymptotic state, and a polynomial decay in the case of Sobolev regularity.

Exponential dephasing of oscillators in the Kinetic Kuramoto Model

We study the kinetic Kuramoto model for coupled oscillators with coupling constant below the synchronization threshold. We manage to prove that, for any analytic initial datum, if the interaction is small enough, the order parameter of the model vanishes exponentially fast, and the solution is asymptotically described by a free flow. This behavior is similar to the phenomenon of Landau damping in plasma physics. In the proof we use a combination of techniques from Landau damping and from abstract Cauchy-Kowalewskaya theorem.

On the complete phase synchronization for the Kuramoto model in the mean-field limit

We study the Kuramoto model for coupled oscillators. For the case of identical natural frequencies, we give a new proof of the complete frequency synchronization for all initial data; extending this result to the continuous version of the model, we manage to prove the complete phase synchronization for any non-atomic measure-valued initial datum. We also discuss the relation between the boundedness of the entropy and the convergence to an incoherent state, for the case of non identical natural frequencies.

Stationary growth and unique invariant harmonic measure of cylindrical DLA

We prove that the harmonic measure is stationary, unique and invariant on the interface of DLA growing on a cylinder surface. We provide a detailed theoretical analysis puzzling together multiscaling, multifractality and conformal invariance, supported by extensive numerical simulations of clusters built using conformal mappings and on lattice. The growth properties of the active and frozen zones are clearly elucidated. We show that the unique scaling exponent characterizing the stationary growth is the DLA fractal dimension.

On the Boltzmann-Grad limit for the two dimensional periodic Lorentz gas

The two-dimensional, periodic Lorentz gas, is the dynamical system corresponding with the free motion of a point particle in a planar system of fixed circular obstacles centered at the vertices of a square lattice in the Euclidian plane. Assuming elastic collisions between the particle and the obstacles, this dynamical system is studied in the Boltzmann-Grad limit, assuming that the obstacle radius $r$ and the reciprocal mean free path are asymptotically equivalent small quantities, and that the particle's distribution function is slowly varying in the space variable. In this limit, the periodic Lorentz gas cannot be described by a linear Boltzmann equation (see [F. Golse, Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse 17 (2008), 735--749]), but involves an integro-differential equation conjectured in [E. Caglioti, F. Golse, C.R. Acad. Sci. Sér. I Math. 346 (2008) 477--482] and proved in [J. Marklof, A. Strömbergsson, preprint arXiv:0801.0612], set on a phase-space larger than the usual single-particle phase-space. The main purpose of the present paper is to study the dynamical properties of this integro-differential equation: identifying its equilibrium states, proving a H Theorem and discussing the speed of approach to equilibrium in the long time limit. In the first part of the paper, we derive the explicit formula for a transition probability appearing in that equation following the method sketched in [E. Caglioti, F. Golse, loc. cit.].

Homogenization of the linear Boltzmann equation in a domain with a periodic distribution of holes

Consider a linear Boltzmann equation posed on the Euclidian plane with a periodic system of circular holes and for particles moving at speed 1. Assuming that the holes are absorbing -- i.e. that particles falling in a hole remain trapped there forever, we discuss the homogenization limit of that equation in the case where the reciprocal number of holes per unit surface and the length of the circumference of each hole are asymptotically equivalent small quantities. We show that the mass loss rate due to particles falling into the holes is governed by a renewal equation that involves the distribution of free-path lengths for the periodic Lorentz gas. In particular, it is proved that the total mass of the particle system at time t decays exponentially fast as t tends to infinity. This is at variance with the collisionless case discussed in [Caglioti, E., Golse, F., Commun. Math. Phys. 236 (2003), pp. 199--221], where the total mass decays as Const./t as the time variable t tends to infinity.

The Boltzmann-Grad limit of the periodic Lorentz gas in two space dimensions

The periodic Lorentz gas is the dynamical system corresponding to the free motion of a point particle in a periodic system of fixed spherical obstacles of radius $r$ centered at the integer points, assuming all collisions of the particle with the obstacles to be elastic. In this Note, we study this motion on time intervals of order $1/r$ and in the limit as $r\to 0^+$, in the case of two space dimensions.

On the distribution of free-path lengths for the periodic Lorentz gas III

In a flat 2-torus with a disk of diameter $r$ removed, let $Φ_r(t)$ be the distribution of free-path lengths (the probability that a segment of length larger than $t$ with uniformly distributed origin and direction does not meet the disk). We prove that $Φ_r(t/r)$ behaves like $\frac{2}{π^2 t}$ for each $t>2$ and in the limit as $r\to 0^+$, in some appropriate sense. We then discuss the implications of this result in the context of kinetic theory.
