Bridging Photon Statistics and Phase Transitions in Random Fiber Lasers

Complex systems exhibit rich equilibrium states, yet the universal principles governing these systems remain unrevealed, motivating the search for novel experimental platforms. Random fiber lasers (RFLs), which generate partially-coherent light-wave through feedback from Rayleigh scattering, provide a photonic realization of such systems. Here we report a comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation of photon statistics for RFLs based on classical second-order temporal correlation function \( g^{(2)}(τ) \), revealing unique statistical properties and introduce a two-dimensional framework for controlling photon statistics. Remarkably, we establish a unified landscape between photon correlation, intensity statistics governed by Levy statistics, and phase transitions with replica symmetry breaking. This multifaceted relationship, observed for the first time, bridges disordered photonics with statistical physics of complex system. Our results offer new pathways for engineering laser emission with controllable photon statistics, and more broadly, this work positions RFLs as a fertile land for exploring emergent behaviors in disordered systems.

Intensity $g^{(2)}$-correlations in random fiber lasers: A random matrix theory approach

We propose a new approach based on random matrix theory to calculate the temporal second-order intensity correlation function $g^{(2)}(t)$ of the radiation emitted by random lasers and random fiber lasers. The multimode character of these systems, with a relevant degree of disorder in the active medium, and large number of random scattering centers substantially hinder the calculation of $g^{(2)}(t)$. Here we apply for the first time in a photonic system the universal statistical properties of Ginibre's non-Hermitian random matrix ensemble to obtain $g^{(2)}(t)$. Excellent agreement is found with time-resolved measurements for several excitation powers of an erbium-based random fiber laser. We also discuss the extension of the random matrix approach to address the statistical properties of general disordered photonic systems with various Hamiltonian symmetries.

Observation of Replica Symmetry Breaking in the 1D Anderson Localization Regime in an Erbium-Doped Random Fiber Laser

The analogue of the paramagnetic to spin-glass phase transition in disordered magnetic systems, leading to the phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking, has been recently demonstrated in a two-dimensional random laser consisting of an organic-based amorphous solid-state thin film. We report here the first demonstration of replica symmetry breaking in a one-dimensional photonic system consisting of an erbium-doped random fiber laser operating in the continuous-wave regime based on a unique random fiber grating system, which plays the role of the random scatterers and operates in the Anderson localization regime. The clear transition from a photonic paramagnetic to a photonic spin glass phase, characterized by the probability distribution function of the Parisi overlap, was verified and characterized. In this unique system, the radiation field interacts only with the gain medium, and the fiber grating, which provides the disordered feedback mechanism, does not interfere with the pump.

Random lasers, Lévy statistics and spin glasses: Synergy between photonics and complex systems

Random lasers have been recently approached as a photonic platform for disordered complex systems, such as spin glasses. In this work, using a Nd$^{3+}$:YBO$_3$ random laser system operating in the nonresonant (diffusive) feedback regime, we measured the distinct statistics of intensity fluctuations and show the physical origin of the complex interplay between the Lévy regime and the replica-symmetry-breaking transition to the photonic spin-glass phase. A novel result is reported: the unsaturated spin-glass behavior for high excitation pulse energies, not observed for systems with coherent feedback. Our experimental findings are corroborated by the present theoretical analysis. The results herein presented universalize the recent observation consistent with replica symmetry breaking in random lasers with coherent feedback, and also advance on the characterization of the fluctuation statistics of the photonic spin-glass phase, supported by recent theoretical works on the nonlinear optics of complex photonic systems.

Replica symmetry breaking in specially designed TiO$_{2}$ nanoparticles-based dye-colloidal random laser

By using specially designed nanoparticles scatterers which prevents photodegradation of the dye, we present clear demonstration of replica symmetry break and a photonic paramagnetic to spin-glass phase transition in a random laser operating in the incoherent feedback regime based on ethanol solution of Rhodamine 6G and amorphous TiO2 nanoparticles.
