Monitoring the energy consumed by a network infrastructure to detect and isolate faults in communication architecture

In recent years, a number of major improvements were introduced in the area of computer networks, energy-efficient network protocols and network management systems. Software Defined Networking (SDN) as a new paradigm for managing complex networks brings a significant opportunity to reduce the energy consumption among ICT. In this paper, we are tackling improvements in the process of monitoring the states of the networking devices and optimizing the existing solutions. We are monitoring the energy consumption of a network architecture and augment the retrieved raw power data to detect changes in the state of the devices. The goal is to benchmark the difference between the power data fetched from the real-measures and the data extracted from the power models, translated as the expected behavior of the devices. An application is designed to monitor and analyze the retrieved power data of a simulated ICT infrastructure composed of Cisco switches and routers, Dell Precision stations and Raritan PDUs. Moreover, smart algorithms are developed which outcome results with detection of changes in the state of the devices, as well as with detection and isolation of possible anomalies and their impact on the energy consumption. The application is envisioned to be an extension to the existing SDN controllers for monitoring and reporting the changes in the state of the ICT devices.

PERCCOM: A Master Program in Pervasive Computing and COMmunications for Sustainable Development

This paper presents the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Pervasive Computing and Communications for Sustainable Development (PERCCOM). This program brings together 11 academic partners and 8 industry partners to combine advanced Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with environmental awareness to enable world-class education and unique competences for ICT professionals who can build cleaner, greener, more resource and energy efficient cyber-physical systems. First, this paper describes the rationale and motivations for ICT education for sustainability challenges. It then details the structure and contents of the programs including the courses offered at the three teaching locations (Nancy France, Lappeenranta Finland, and Lulea Sweden). The ways that the program has been running as well as students selection, their thesis works, involvement of industry, are also discussed. The program was built and managed using a solid academic standards and strategies student-centered learning.

Reducing energy consumption of network infrastructure using spectral approach

The energy consumption by ICT (Information and Communication Technology) equipment is rapidly increasing which causes a significant economic and environmental problem. At present, the network infrastructure is becoming a large portion of the energy footprint in ICT. Thus, the concept of energy efficient or green networking has been introduced. Now one of the main concerns of network industry is to minimize energy consumption of network infrastructure because of the potential economic benefits, ethical responsibility, and its environmental impact. In this paper, the energy management strategies to reduce the energy consumed by network switches in LAN (Local Area Network) have been developed. According to the life-cycle assessment of network switches, the highest amount of energy is consumed during usage phase. The study considers bandwidth, link load and traffic matrices as input parameters which have the highest contribution to energy footprints of network switches during usage phase and energy consumption as output. Then with the objective of reducing energy usage of network infrastructure, the feasibility of putting Ethernet switches hibernate or sleep mode was investigated. After that, the network topology was reorganized using clustering method based on the spectral approach for putting network switches to hibernate or switched off mode considering the time and communications among them. Experimental results show the interest in this approach in terms of energy consumption. .

An uniform data replication algorithm in wireless micro-sensor network for communicating materials application

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have recently gained a great deal of attention as a topic of research, with a wide range of applications being explored such as communicating materials. Data dissemination and storage are very important issues for sensor networks. The problem of designing data dissemination protocols for communicating material needs different analyses related to storage density and uniformity which has not been addressed sufficiently in the literature. This paper details storage protocol on the material by systematic dissemination through integrated wireless micro-sensors nodes. The performances of our solutions are evaluated through simulation using Castalia/OMNeT++. The results show that our algorithm provides uniform data storage in communicating material for different density level.

Key Factors for Information Dissemination on Communicating Products and Fixed Databases

Intelligent products carrying their own information are more and more present nowadays. In recent years, some authors argued the usage of such products for the Supply Chain Management Industry. Indeed, a multitude of informational vectors take place in such environments like fixed databases or manufactured products on which we are able to embed significant proportion of data. By considering distributed database systems, we can allocate specific data fragments to the product useful to manage its own evolution. The paper aims to analyze the Supply Chain performance according to different strategies of information distribution. Thus, different distribution patterns between informational vectors are studied. The purpose is to determine the key factors which lead to improve information distribution performance in term of time properties.

Control compensation based on upper bound delay in networked control systems

Recent interest in networked control systems (NCS) has instigated research in both communication networks and control. Analysis of NCSs has usually been performed from either the network or the control point of view, but not many papers exist where the analysis of both is done in the same context. In this paper an overall analysis of the networked control system is presented. First, the procedure of obtaining the upper bound delay value for packet transmission in the switched Ethernet network is presented. Next, the obtained delay estimate is utilised in delay compensation for improving the Quality of Performance (QoP) of the control systems. The presented upper bound delay algorithm applies ideas from network calculus theory. For the improvement of QoP, two delay compensation strategies, the Smith predictor based and the robust control based delay compensation strategies, are presented and compared.

Use of upper bound delay estimate in stability analysis and robust control compensation in networked control systems

Recent interest in networked control systems (NCS) has instigated research in various areas of both communication networks and control. The analysis of NCS has often been performed either from the network, or the control point of view and not many papers exist were the analysis of both is done in the same context. Here a simple overall analysis is presented. In the paper the procedure of obtaining the upper bound delay value in the switched Ethernet network is proposed and the obtained delay estimate is used in stability analysis of the feedback loop and in the control compensation. The upper bound delay algorithm is based on the network calculus theory, the stability analysis uses the small gain theorem, and control compensating strategy is based on Smith predictor, where however the upper bound delay is utilised in obtaining the delay estimate.
