Phenomenology of the new light Higgs bosons in Gildener-Weinberg model

Gildener-Weinberg (GW) models of electroweak symmetry breaking are especially interesting because the low mass and nearly Standard Model couplings of the $125\,{\rm GeV}$ Higgs boson, $H$, are protected by approximate scale symmetry. Another important but so far under-appreciated feature of these models is that a sum rule bounds the masses of the new charged and neutral Higgs bosons appearing in {\em all} these models to be below about $500\,{\rm GeV}$. Therefore, they are within reach of LHC data currently or soon to be in hand. Also so far unnoticed of these models, certain cubic and quartic Higgs scalar couplings vanish at the classical level. This is due to spontaneous breaking of the scale symmetry. These couplings become nonzero from explicit scale breaking in the Coleman-Weinberg loop expansion of the effective potential. In a two-Higgs doublet GW model, we calculate $λ_{HHH} \simeq 2(λ_{HHH})_{\rm SM} = 64\,{\rm GeV}$. This corresponds to $σ(pp \to HH) \cong 15$--$20\,{\rm fb}$, its {\em minimum} value for $\sqrt{s} = 13$--$14\,{\rm TeV}$ at the LHC. It will require at least the $27\,{\rm TeV}$ HE-LHC to observe this cross section. We also find $λ_{HHHH} \simeq 4(λ_{HHHH})_{\rm SM} = 0.129$, whose observation in $pp \to HHH$ requires a $100\,{\rm TeV}$ collider. Because of the above-mentioned sum rule, these results apply to {\em all} GW models. In view of this unpromising forecast, we stress that LHC searches for the new relatively light Higgs bosons of GW models are by far the surest way to test them in this decade.

Topological gauge fixing II: a homotopy formulation

We revisit the implementation of the metric-independent Fock-Schwinger gauge in the abelian Chern-Simons field theory defined in ${\mathbb{R}}^3$ by means of a homotopy condition. This leads to the lagrangian $F \wedge hF$ in terms of curvatures $F$ and of the Poincaré homotopy operator $h$. The corresponding field theory provides the same link invariants as the abelian Chern-Simons theory. Incidentally the part of the gauge field propagator which yields the link invariants of the Chern-Simons theory in the Fock-Schwinger gauge is recovered without any computation.

Isolating Prompt Photons with Narrow Cones

We discuss the isolation of prompt photons in hadronic collisions by means of narrow isolation cones and the QCD computation of the corresponding cross sections. We reconsider the occurence of large perturbative terms with logarithmic dependence on the cone size and their impact on the fragmentation scale dependence. We cure the apparent perturbative violation of unitarity for small cone sizes, which had been noticed earlier in next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations, by resumming the leading logarithmic dependence on the cone size. We discuss possible implications regarding the implementation of some hollow cone variants of the cone criterion, which simulate the experimental difficulty to impose isolation inside the region filled by the electromagnetic shower that develops in the calorimeter.

Testing the Technicolor Interpretation of CDF's Dijet Excess at the LHC

Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors with 1--20 inverse femtobarns of data. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We find that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that may reveal $ρ_T \rightarrow \ellνjj$. Observation of the isospin-related channel $ρ^{pm}_T \rightarrow Z π^{pm}_T \rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^- jj$ and of $ρ^{pm}_T \rightarrow WZ$ in the three lepton plus neutrino and dilepton plus dijet modes will be important confirmations of the LSTC interpretation of the CDF signal. The $Zπ_T$ channel is experimentally cleaner than $Wπ_T$ and its rate is known from $Wπ_T$ by phase space. It can be discovered or excluded with the collider data expected in 2012. The $WZ \rightarrow 3\ellν$ channel is cleanest of all and its rate is determined from $Wπ_T$ and the LSTC parameter $\sinχ$. This channel and $WZ \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- jj$ are discussed as a function of $\sinχ$.

Testing the Technicolor Interpretation of the CDF Dijet Excess at the 8-TeV LHC

Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors for 8 TeV collisions and 20 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We show that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that may reveal $ρ_T \rightarrow \ellνjj$. Observation of the isospin-related channel $ρ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow Z π^{\pm}_T \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- jj$ and of $ρ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow WZ$ in the $\ell^+\ell^-\ell^{pm}ν_\ell$ and $\ell^+\ell^- jj$ modes will be important confirmations of the LSTC interpretation of the CDF signal. The $Zπ_T$ channel is experimentally cleaner than $Wπ_T$ and its rate is known from $Wπ_T$ by phase space. It can be discovered or excluded with the collider data expected by the end of 2012. The $WZ \rightarrow 3\ellν$ channel is cleanest of all and its rate is determined from $Wπ_T$ and the LSTC parameter $\sinχ$. This channel and $WZ \to \ell^+\ell^- jj$ are discussed as a function of $\sinχ$.

Recent Progress in the Golem Project

We report on the current status of the Golem project which aims at the construction of a general one-loop evaluator for matrix elements. We construct the one-loop matrix elements from Feynman diagrams in a highly automated way and provide a library for the reduction and numerically stable evaluation of the tensor integrals involved in this approach. Furthermore, we present applications to physics processes relevant for the LHC.
