Generic model for hyperkagome iridate in the local moment regime

Hyperkagome iridate, Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$, has been regarded as a promising candidate material for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid. Here the three-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles forms the hyperkagome lattice of Ir$^{4+}$ ions. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, the local moments of Ir$^{4+}$ ions are described by the pseudospin $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ Kramers doublet. The Heisenberg model on this lattice is highly frustrated and quantum/classical versions have been studied in earlier literature. In this work, we derive a generic local-moment model beyond the Heisenberg limit for the hyperkagome iridate by considering multi-orbital interactions for all the $t_{2g}$ orbitals and spin-orbit coupling. The lifting of massive classical degeneracy in the Heisenberg model by various spin-anisotropy terms is investigated at the classical level and the resulting phase diagram is presented. We find that different anisotropy terms prefer distinct classes of magnetically ordered phases, often with various discrete degeneracy. The implications of our results for recent $μ$SR and NMR experiments on this material and possible quantum spin liquid phases are discussed.

Predominance of the Kitaev interaction in a three-dimensional honeycomb iridate: from ab-initio to spin model

The recently discovered three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb iridate, $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, has raised hopes for the realization of dominant Kitaev interaction between spin-orbit entangled local moments due to its near-ideal lattice structure. If true, this material may lie close to the sought-after quantum spin liquid phase in three dimensions. Utilizing ab-initio electronic structure calculations, we first show that the spin-orbit entangled basis, $j_{\rm eff}$=1/2, correctly captures the low energy electronic structure. The effective spin model derived in the strong coupling limit supplemented by the ab-initio results is shown to be dominated by the Kitaev interaction. We demonstrated that the possible range of parameters is consistent with a non-coplanar spiral magnetic order found in a recent experiment. All of these analyses suggest that $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ may be the closest among known materials to the Kitaev spin liquid regime.

Recent progress on correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling

Emergence of novel quantum ground states in correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling has been a recent subject of intensive studies. While it has been realized that spin-orbit coupling can provide non-trivial band topology in weakly interacting electron systems, as in topological insulators and semi-metals, the role of electron-electron interaction in strongly spin-orbit coupled systems has not been fully understood. The availability of new materials with significant electron correlation and strong spin-orbit coupling now makes such investigations possible. Many of these materials contain 5d or 4d transition metal elements; the prominent examples are iridium oxides or iridates. In this review, we succinctly discuss recent theoretical and experimental progress on this subject. After providing a brief overview, we focus on pyrochlore iridates and three-dimensional honeycomb iridates. In pyrochlore iridates, we discuss the quantum criticality of the bulk and surface states, and the relevance of the surface/boundary states in a number of topological and magnetic ground states, both in the bulk and thin film configurations. Experimental signatures of these boundary and bulk states are discussed. Domain wall formation and strongly-direction-dependent magneto-transport are also discussed. Regarding the three-dimensional honeycomb iridates, we consider possible quantum spin liquid phases and unusual magnetic orders in theoretical models with strongly bond-dependent interactions. These theoretical ideas and results are discussed in light of recent resonant X-ray scattering experiments on three-dimensional honeycomb iridates. We also contrast these results with the situation in two-dimensional honeycomb iridates. We conclude with the outlook on other related systems.

Spin-Orbit Physics Giving Rise to Novel Phases in Correlated Systems: Iridates and Related Materials

Recently, the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in correlated materials have become one of the most actively studied subjects in condensed matter physics, as correlations and SOC together can lead to the discovery of new phases. Among candidate materials, iridium oxides (iridates) have been an excellent playground to uncover such novel phenomena. In this review, we discuss recent progress in iridates and related materials, focusing on the basic concepts, relevant microscopic Hamiltonians, and unusual properties of iridates in perovskite- and honeycomb-based structures. Perspectives on SOC and correlation physics beyond iridates are also discussed.

Topological spinon semimetals and gapless boundary states in three dimensions

Recently there has been much effort in understanding topological phases of matter with gapless bulk excitations, which are characterized by topological invariants and protected intrinsic boundary states. Here we show that topological semimetals of Majorana fermions arise in exactly solvable Kitaev spin models on a series of three dimensional lattices. The ground states of these models are quantum spin liquids with gapless nodal spectra of bulk Majorana fermion excitations. It is shown that these phases are topologically stable as long as certain discrete symmetries are protected. The corresponding topological indices and the gapless boundary states are explicitly computed to support these results. In contrast to previous studies of non-interacting systems, the phases discussed in this work are novel examples of gapless topological phases in interacting spin systems.

Two iridates, two models, two approaches: a comparative study on magnetism in 3D honeycomb materials

Two recent theoretical works studied the role of Kitaev interactions in the newly observed incommensurate magnetic order in the hyper-honeycomb ($β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$) and stripy-honeycomb ($γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$) iridates. Each of these works analyzed a different model ($JKΓ$ versus coupled zigzag chain model) using a contrasting method (classical versus soft-spin analysis). The lack of commonality between these works precludes meaningful comparisons and a proper understanding of these unusual orderings. In this study, we complete the unfinished picture initiated by these two works by solving both models with both approaches for both 3D honeycomb iridates. Through comparisons between all combinations of models, techniques, and materials, we find that the bond-isotropic $JKΓ$ model consistently predicts the experimental phase of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ regardless of the method used, while the experimental phase of $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ can be generated by the soft-spin approach with eigenmode mixing irrespective of the model used. To gain further insights, we solve a 1D quantum spin-chain model related to both 3D models using the density matrix renormalization group method to form a benchmark. We discover that in the 1D model, incommensurate correlations in the classical and soft-spin analysis survive in the quantum limit only in the presence of the symmetric-off-diagonal exchange $Γ$ found in the $JKΓ$ model. The relevance of these results to the real materials are also discussed.

Generic spin model for the honeycomb iridates beyond the Kitaev limit

Recently, realizations of Kitaev physics have been sought in the A2IrO3 family of honeycomb iridates, originating from oxygen-mediated exchange through edge-shared octahedra. However, for the j = 1/2 Mott insulator in these materials exchange from direct d-orbital overlap is relevant, and it was proposed that a Heisenberg term should be added to the Kitaev model. Here we provide the generic nearest-neighbour spin Hamiltonian when both oxygen-mediated and direct overlap are present, containing a bond dependent off-diagonal exchange in addition to Heisenberg and Kitaev terms. We analyze this complete model using a combination of classical techniques and exact diagonalization. Near the Kitaev limit, we find new magnetic phases, 120 degree and incommensurate spiral order, as well as extended regions of zigzag and stripy order. Possible applications to Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 are discussed.

Heisenberg-Kitaev model on hyperhoneycomb lattice

Motivated by recent experiments on $β-$Li$_2$IrO$_3$, we study the phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a three dimensional lattice of tri-coordinated Ir$^{4+}$, dubbed the hyperhoneycomb lattice by Takagi et. al. The lattice geometry of this material, along with Ir$^{4+}$ ions carrying $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ moments, suggests that the Heisenberg-Kitaev model may effectively capture the low energy spin-physics of the system in the strong-coupling limit. Using a combination of semiclassical analysis, exact solution and slave-fermion mean field theory, we find, in addition to the spin-liquid, four different magnetically ordered phases depending on the parameter regime. All four magnetic phases--the Néel, the polarized ferromagnet, the skew-stripy and the skew-zig-zag, have collinear spin ordering. The three dimensional Z$_2$ spin liquid, which extends over an extended parameter regime around the exactly solvable Kitaev point, has a gapless Majorana mode with a deformed Fermi-circle (co-dimensions, $d_c=2$). We discuss the effect of the magnetic field and finite temperature on different phases that may be relevant for future experiments.

Theory of Magnetic Phase Diagrams in Hyperhoneycomb and Harmonic-honeycomb Iridates

Motivated by recent experiments, we consider a generic spin model in the $j_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ basis for the hyperhoneycomb and harmonic-honeycomb iridates. Based on microscopic considerations, the effect of an additional bond-dependent anisotropic spin exchange interaction ($Γ$) beyond the Heisenberg-Kitaev model is investigated. We obtain the magnetic phase diagrams of the hyperhoneycomb and harmonic-honeycomb ($\mathcal{H}\text{--}1$) lattices via a combination of the Luttinger-Tisza approximation, single-$\mathbf{Q}$ variational ansatz, and classical Monte Carlo simulated annealing. The resulting phase diagrams on both systems show the existence of incommensurate, non-coplanar spiral magnetic orders as well as other commensurate magnetic orders. The spiral orders show counter-propagating spiral patterns, which may be favorably compared to recent experimental results on both iridates. The parameter regime of various magnetic orders and ordering wavevectors are quite similar in both systems. We discuss the implications of our work to recent experiments and also compare our results to those of the two dimensional honeycomb iridate systems.

Topological and magnetic phases with strong spin-orbit coupling on the hyperhoneycomb lattice

We study the general phase diagram of correlated electrons for iridium-based (Ir) compounds on the hyperhoneycomb lattice---a crystal structure where the Ir$^{4+}$ ions form a three-dimensional network with three-fold coordination recently realized in the $β$-Li${}_{2}$IrO${}_{3}$ compound. Using a combination of microscopic derivations, symmetry analysis, and density functional calculations, we determine the general model for the electrons occupying the $j_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ orbitals at the Ir$^{4+}$ sites. In the non-interacting limit, we find that this model allows for both topological and trivial electronic band insulators along with metallic states. The effect of Hubbard-type electron-electron repulsion on the above electronic structure in stabilizing $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic order reveals a phase diagram with continuous phase transition between a topological band insulator and a Neel ordered magnetic insulator.

Order-by-disorder and magnetic field response in Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a hyperhoneycomb lattice

We study the finite temperature phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a three dimensional hyperhoneycomb lattice. Using semiclassical analysis and classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we investigate quantum and thermal order-by-disorder, as well as the magnetic ordering temperature. We find the parameter regime where quantum and thermal fluctuations favor different magnetic orders, which leads to an additional finite temperature phase transition within the ordered phase. This transition, however, occurs at a relatively low temperature and the entropic effects may dominate most of the finite temperature region below the ordering temperature. In addition, we explore the magnetization process in the presence of a magnetic field and discover spin-flop transitions which are sensitive to the applied-field direction. We discuss implications of our results for future experiments on a hyperhoneycomb lattice system such as the recently discovered β-Li2IrO3.

Magnetic excitation spectra in pyrochlore iridates

Metal-insulator transitions in pyrochlore iridates (A2Ir2O7) are believed to occur due to subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, geometric frustration, and electron interactions. In particular, the nature of magnetic ordering of iridium ions in the insulating phase is crucial for understanding of several exotic phases recently proposed for these materials. We study the spectrum of magnetic excitations in the intermediate-coupling regime for the so-called all-in/all-out magnetic state in pyrochlore iridates with non-magnetic A-site ions (A=Eu,Y), which is found to be preferred in previous theoretical studies. We find that the effect of charge fluctuations on the spin-waves in this regime leads to strong departure from the lowest-order spin-wave calculations based on models obtained in strong-coupling calculations. We discuss the characteristic features of the magnetic excitation spectrum that can lead to conclusive identification of the magnetic order in future resonant inelastic x-ray (or neutron) scattering experiments. Knowledge of the nature of magnetic order and its low-energy features may also provide useful information on the accompanying metal-insulator transition.
