Complete intersections on Veronese surfaces

In this paper we describe all possible reduced complete intersection sets of points on Veronese surfaces. We formulate a conjecture for the general case of complete intersection subvarieties of any dimension and we prove it in the case of the quadratic Veronese threefold. Our main tool is an effective characterization of all possible Hilbert functions of reduced subvarieties of Veronese surfaces.

Rational normal curves and Hadamard products

Given $r>n$ general hyperplanes in $\mathbb P^n,$ a star configuration of points is the set of all the $n$-wise intersection of them. We introduce {\it contact star configurations}, which are star configurations where all the hyperplanes are osculating to the same rational normal curve. In this paper we find a relation between this construction and Hadamard products of linear varieties. Moreover, we study the union of contact star configurations on a same conic in $\mathbb P^2$, we prove that the union of two contact star configurations has a special $h$-vector and, in some cases, this is a complete intersection.

Toric ideals with linear components: an algebraic interpretation of clustering the cells of a contingency table

In this paper we show that the agglomeration of rows or columns of a contingency table with a hierarchical clustering algorithm yields statistical models defined through toric ideals. In particular, starting from the classical independence model, the agglomeration process adds a linear part to the toric ideal generated by the $2 \times 2$ minors.

Star configurations on generic hypersurfaces

Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial in $S = \mathbb{C}[x_0,...,x_n]$. Our goal is to understand a particular polynomial decomposition of $F$; geometrically, we wish to determine when the hypersurface defined by $F$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ contains a star configuration. To solve this problem, we use techniques from commutative algebra and algebraic geometry to reduce our question to computing the rank of a matrix.

The Waring rank of the sum of pairwise coprime monomials

In this paper we compute the Waring rank of any polynomial of the form F=M_1+...+M_r, where the M_i are pairwise coprime monomials, i.e., GCD(M_i,M_j)=1 for i not j. In particular, we determine the Waring rank of any monomial. As an application we show that certain monomials in three variables give examples of forms of rank higher than the generic form. As a further application we produce a sum of power decomposition for any form which is the sum of pairwise coprime monomials.

The Solution to Waring's Problem for Monomials

In the polynomial ring $T=k[y_1,...,y_n]$, with $n>1$, we bound the multiplicity of homogeneous radical ideals $I\subset (y_1^{a_1},...,y_n^{a_n})$ such that $T/I$ is a graded $k$-algebra with Krull dimension one. As a consequence we solve the Waring Problem for all monomials, i.e. we compute the minimal number of linear forms needed to write a monomial as a sum of powers of these linear forms. Moreover, we give an explicit description of a sum of powers decomposition for monomials. We also produce new bounds for the Waring rank of polynomials which are a sum of pairwise coprime monomials.

Higher secant varieties of $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^m$ embedded in bi-degree $(1,d)$

Let $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ denote the Segre-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^m$ via the sections of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}(1,d)$. We study the dimensions of higher secant varieties of $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ and we prove that there is no defective $s^{th}$ secant variety, except possibly for $n$ values of $s$. Moreover when ${m+d \choose d}$ is multiple of $(m+n+1)$, the $s^{th}$ secant variety of $X^{(n,m)}_{(1,d)}$ has the expected dimension for every $s$.
