Gaussian Kernel Variance For an Adaptive Learning Method on Signals Over Graphs

This paper discusses a special kind of a simple yet possibly powerful algorithm, called single-kernel Gradraker (SKG), which is an adaptive learning method predicting unknown nodal values in a network using known nodal values and the network structure. We aim to find out how to configure the special kind of the model in applying the algorithm. To be more specific, we focus on SKG with a Gaussian kernel and specify how to find a suitable variance for the kernel. To do so, we introduce two variables with which we are able to set up requirements on the variance of the Gaussian kernel to achieve (near-) optimal performance and can better understand how SKG works. Our contribution is that we introduce two variables as analysis tools, illustrate how predictions will be affected under different Gaussian kernels, and provide an algorithm finding a suitable Gaussian kernel for SKG with knowledge about the training network. Simulation results on real datasets are provided.

Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Perfect Coding in Massive MIMO Systems

This letter investigates bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB) with perfect coding in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to achieve both maximum diversity gain and multiplexing gain. Using perfect coding with BICMB enables us to do this. We show that by using BICMB and perfect coding, the diversity gain becomes independent from the number of transmitted data streams and the number of antennas in each remote antenna unit (RAU) at the transmitter and the receiver. The assumption is that the perfect channel state information (CSI) is known at both the transmitter and the receiver and the number of antennas goes to infinity. This latter assumption can be relaxed by a large number of antennas in each RAU, similar to the case for all massive MIMO research. Simulation results show that when the perfect channel state information assumption is satisfied, the use of BICMB with perfect coding results in the diversity gain values predicted by the analysis.

Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Downlink Per-Group Communications with Hybrid Linear Precoding

We address the problem of analyzing and classifying in groups the downlink channel environment in a millimeter-wavelength cell, accounting for path loss, multipath fading, and User Equipment (UE) blocking, by employing a hybrid propagation and multipath fading model, thus using accurate inter-group interference modeling. The base station (BS) employs a large Uniform Planar Array (UPA) to facilitate massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) communications with high efficiency. UEs are equipped with a single antenna and are distributed uniformly within the cell. The key problem is analyzing and defining groups toward precoding. Because equitable type of throughput is desired between groups, Combined Frequency and Spatial Division and Multiplexing (CFSDM) prevails as necessary. We show that by employing three subcarrier frequencies, the UEs can be efficiently separated into high throughput groups, with each group employing Virtual Channel Model Beams (VCMB) based inner precoding, followed by efficient Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) outer precoders. For each group, we study three different sub-grouping methods offering different advantages. We show that the improvement offered by Zero-Forcing Per-Group Precoding (ZF-PGP) over Zero-Forcing Precoding (ZFP) is very high.

A Generalized Framework on Beamformer Design and CSI Acquisition for Single-Carrier Massive MIMO Systems in Millimeter Wave Channels

In this paper, we establish a general framework on the reduced dimensional channel state information (CSI) estimation and pre-beamformer design for frequency-selective massive multiple-input multiple-output MIMO systems employing single-carrier (SC) modulation in time division duplex (TDD) mode by exploiting the joint angle-delay domain channel sparsity in millimeter (mm) wave frequencies. First, based on a generic subspace projection taking the joint angle-delay power profile and user-grouping into account, the reduced rank minimum mean square error (RR-MMSE) instantaneous CSI estimator is derived for spatially correlated wideband MIMO channels. Second, the statistical pre-beamformer design is considered for frequency-selective SC massive MIMO channels. We examine the dimension reduction problem and subspace (beamspace) construction on which the RR-MMSE estimation can be realized as accurately as possible. Finally, a spatio-temporal domain correlator type reduced rank channel estimator, as an approximation of the RR-MMSE estimate, is obtained by carrying out least square (LS) estimation in a proper reduced dimensional beamspace. It is observed that the proposed techniques show remarkable robustness to the pilot interference (or contamination) with a significant reduction in pilot overhead.

Linear Precoding for MIMO Channels with QAM Constellations and Reduced Complexity

In this paper, the problem of designing a linear precoder for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems in conjunction with Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is addressed. First, a novel and efficient methodology to evaluate the input-output mutual information for a general Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system as well as its corresponding gradients is presented, based on the Gauss-Hermite quadrature rule. Then, the method is exploited in a block coordinate gradient ascent optimization process to determine the globally optimal linear precoder with respect to the MIMO input-output mutual information for QAM systems with relatively moderate MIMO channel sizes. The proposed methodology is next applied in conjunction with the complexity-reducing per-group processing (PGP) technique, which is semi-optimal, to both perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) as well as statistical channel state information (SCSI) scenarios, with high transmitting and receiving antenna size, and for constellation size up to $M=64$. We show by numerical results that the precoders developed offer significantly better performance than the configuration with no precoder, and the maximum diversity precoder for QAM with constellation sizes $M=16,~32$, and $~64$ and for MIMO channel size $100\times100$.

New Algorithms for Maximizing Cellular Wireless Network Energy Efficiency

In this paper, we aim to maximize the energy efficiency of cellular wireless networks. Specifically, we address the power allocation problem in multi-cell multi-carrier systems. Considering realistic base station power consumption models, we formulate a network-wide energy efficiency maximization problem. Using tools from fractional programming, we cast this problem in the framework of bi-criterion optimization where rate maximization and power minimization are weighted accordingly. Interference pricing mechanism is applied to reduce the intercell interference and to achieve a higher network performance. We decompose the main problem into subproblems via dual decomposition. These subproblems are independently solved per sector using limited information exchange between base stations. We first derive our expressions and present algorithms for the single-tier networks. Then, we extend our analysis to two-tier networks where picocell base stations are deployed to improve the network performance and reduce the link distances. Lastly, we extend our framework and include the quality-of-service constraints. We obtain closed-form expressions for the power level updates which are determined by the multi-level water-filling algorithm, or, as it is sometimes called as, the modified waterfilling algorithm. Based on our simulation results, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can outperform the benchmark approaches in terms of energy efficiency by a factor of 2.7.

Diversity Analysis of Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

For broadband wireless communication systems, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been combined with Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) techniques. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing for flat fading MIMO channels. For frequency selective fading MIMO channels, BICMB with OFDM (BICMB-OFDM) can be applied to achieve both spatial diversity and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. However, analyzing the diversity of BICMB-OFDM is a challenging problem. In this paper, the diversity analysis of BICMB-OFDM is carried out. First, the maximum achievable diversity is derived and a full diversity condition RcSL <= 1 is proved, where Rc, S, and L are the code rate, the number of parallel steams transmitted at each subcarrier, and the number of channel taps, respectively. Then, the performance degradation due to the correlation among subcarriers is investigated. Finally, the subcarrier grouping technique is employed to combat the performance degradation and provide multi-user compatibility.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Fractional Frequency Reuse in Heterogeneous Networks

Next generation wireless networks face the challenge of increasing energy consumption while satisfying the unprecedented increase in the data rate demand. To address this problem, we propose a utility-based energy-efficient resource allocation algorithm for the downlink transmissions in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). We consider the fractional frequency reuse (FFR) method in order to mitigate the intra- and inter-cell interference. The proposed algorithm divides the resource allocation problem into frequency and power assignment problems and sequentially solves them. The proposed power control algorithm uses the gradient ascent method to control the transmit power of macrocell base stations as most of the power in the network is consumed there. We also present the optimality conditions of the resource allocation problem and the convergence of the proposed algorithm. We study the performance of the proposed algorithm in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides substantial improvements in the energy efficiency and throughput of the network.

Common Rate Maximization in Two-Layer Cellular Radio Systems

We address the common rate maximization problem in two-layer cellular networks where high-power and low-power base stations are colocated in the same geographical area. Interference becomes a serious problem when two or more layers are considered in the same network. For this purpose, power control in the downlink needs to be used to limit the interference and to fully exploit the benefits of additional layer deployments. We present an analytical framework to the common rate maximization problem both with and without maximum power constraints and propose a heuristic algorithm. We present simulation results for the proposed approaches in a two-layer network setup and observe a significant common rate increase compared to single-layer wireless networks.

Full-Diversity Precoding Design of Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) techniques have been incorporated with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for broadband wireless communication systems. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve both spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing for flat fading MIMO channels. For frequency selective fading MIMO channels, BICMB with OFDM (BICMB-OFDM) can be employed to provide both spatial diversity and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. In our previous work, the subcarrier grouping technique was applied to combat the negative effect of subcarrier correlation. It was also proved that full diversity of BICMB-OFDM with Subcarrier Grouping (BICMB-OFDM-SG) can be achieved within the condition R_cSL<=1, where R_c, S, and L are the code rate, the number of parallel streams at each subcarrier, and the number of channel taps, respectively. The full diversity condition implies that if S increases, R_c may have to decrease to maintain full diversity. As a result, increasing the number of parallel streams may not improve the total transmission rate. In this paper, the precoding technique is employed to overcome the full diversity restriction issue of R_cSL<=1 for BICMB-OFDM-SG. First, the diversity analysis of precoded BICMB-OFDM-SG is carried out. Then, the full-diversity precoding design is developed with the minimum achievable decoding complexity.

Interference-Based Cell Selection in Heterogenous Networks

Heterogeneous cellular networks provide significant improvements in terms of increased data rates and cell coverage, and offer reduced user rate starvation. However, there are important problems to be solved. In this paper, we identify that the cell selection criterion is an important factor determining the user rates especially in the uplink transmissions and apply cell breathing to determine the user and base station assignments. We observe that the proposed interference-based cell selection algorithm provides better load balancing among the base stations in the system to improve the uplink user rates. We present the implementation steps in a typical LTE network and demonstrate the performance improvements through simulations.

Link Failure Recovery over Very Large Arbitrary Networks: The Case of Coding

Network coding-based link failure recovery techniques provide near-hitless recovery and offer high capacity efficiency. Diversity coding is the first technique to incorporate coding in this field and is easy to implement over small arbitrary networks. However, its capacity efficiency is restricted by its systematic coding and high design complexity even though its design complexity is lower than the other coding-based recovery techniques. Alternative techniques mitigate some of these limitations, but they are difficult to implement over arbitrary networks. In this paper, we propose a simple column generation-based design algorithm and a novel advanced diversity coding technique to achieve near-hitless recovery over arbitrary networks. The design framework consists of two parts: a main problem and subproblem. Main problem is realized with Linear Programming (LP) and Integer Linear Programming (ILP), whereas the subproblem can be realized with different methods. The simulation results suggest that both the novel coding structure and the novel design algorithm lead to higher capacity efficiency for near-hitless recovery. The novel design algorithm simplifies the capacity placement problem which enables implementing diversity coding-based techniques on very large arbitrary networks.

Network Coding-Based Link Failure Recovery over Large Arbitrary Networks

Network coding-based link failure recovery techniques provide near-hitless recovery and offer high capacity efficiency. Diversity coding is the first technique to incorporate coding in this field and is easy to implement over small arbitrary networks. However, its capacity efficiency is restricted by its systematic coding and high design complexity even though it has lower complexity than the other coding-based recovery techniques. Alternative techniques mitigate some of these limitations, but they are difficult to implement over arbitrary networks. In this paper, we propose a novel non-systematic coding technique and a simple design algorithm to implement the diversity coding-based (or network coding-based) recovery over arbitrary networks. The design framework consists of two parts. An ILP formulation for each part is developed. The simulation results suggest that both the novel coding structure and the novel design algorithm lead to higher capacity efficiency for near-hitless recovery. The new design algorithm is able to achieve optimal results in large arbitrary networks.

Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Perfect Coding

When the Channel State Information (CSI) is known by both the transmitter and the receiver, beamforming techniques employing Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) are commonly used in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Without channel coding, there is a trade-off between full diversity and full multiplexing. When channel coding is added, both of them can be achieved as long as the code rate Rc and the number of employed subchannels S satisfy the condition RcS<=1. By adding a properly designed constellation precoder, both full diversity and full multiplexing can be achieved for both uncoded and coded systems with the trade-off of a higher decoding complexity, e.g., Fully Precoded Multiple Beamforming (FPMB) and Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Full Precoding (BICMB-FP) without the condition RcS<=1. Recently discovered Perfect Space-Time Block Code (PSTBC) is a full-rate full-diversity space-time code, which achieves efficient shaping and high coding gain for MIMO systems. In this paper, a new technique, Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Perfect Coding (BICMB-PC), is introduced. BICMB-PC transmits PSTBCs through convolutional coded SVD systems. Similar to BICMB-FP, BICMB-PC achieves both full diversity and full multiplexing, and its performance is almost the same as BICMB-FP. The advantage of BICMB-PC is that it can provide a much lower decoding complexity than BICMB-FP, since the real and imaginary parts of the received signal can be separated for BICMB-PC of dimensions 2 and 4, and only the part corresponding to the coded bit is required to acquire one bit metric for the Viterbi decoder.

Coded Path Protection Part 2: Design, Implementation, and Performance

In Part 1 of this paper, we introduced a coding-based proactive network protection scheme, named Coded Path Protection (CPP). In CPP, a backup stream of the primary data is encoded with other data streams, resulting in capacity savings. In addition to being a systematic approach of building valid coding structures, CPP is an optimal and simple capacity placement and coding group formation algorithm. It converts the sharing structure of any solution of a Shared Path Protection (SPP) technique into a coding structure with minimum extra capacity. In this Part 2 of the paper, we describe the implementation of our algorithm using Integer Linear Programming (ILP), its timing and synchronization requirements, and implementation issues in networks. We present simulation results which confirm that CPP provides faster link failure recovery than SPP while it incurs marginal extra capacity beyond that of SPP.

Green Cellular Wireless Networks: Where to Begin?

Conventional cellular wireless networks were designed with the purpose of providing high throughput for the user and high capacity for the service provider, without any provisions of energy efficiency. As a result, these networks have an enormous Carbon footprint. In this note, we describe the sources of the inefficiencies in such networks. First we quantify how much Carbon footprint such networks generate. We also discuss how much more mobile traffic is expected to increase so that this Carbon footprint will even increase tremendously more. We then discuss specific sources of inefficiency and potential sources of improvement at the physical layer as well as higher layers of the communication protocol hierarchy. In particular, considering that most of the energy inefficiency in wireless cellular networks is at the base stations, we discuss multi-tier networks and point to the potential of exploiting mobility patterns in order to use base station energy judiciously.

Multiple Beamforming with Perfect Coding

Perfect Space-Time Block Codes (PSTBCs) achieve full diversity, full rate, nonvanishing constant minimum determinant, uniform average transmitted energy per antenna, and good shaping. However, the high decoding complexity is a critical issue for practice. When the Channel State Information (CSI) is available at both the transmitter and the receiver, Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is commonly applied for a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system to enhance the throughput or the performance. In this paper, two novel techniques, Perfect Coded Multiple Beamforming (PCMB) and Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Perfect Coding (BICMB-PC), are proposed, employing both PSTBCs and SVD with and without channel coding, respectively. With CSI at the transmitter (CSIT), the decoding complexity of PCMB is substantially reduced compared to a MIMO system employing PSTBC, providing a new prospect of CSIT. Especially, because of the special property of the generation matrices, PCMB provides much lower decoding complexity than the state-of-the-art SVD-based uncoded technique in dimensions 2 and 4. Similarly, the decoding complexity of BICMB-PC is much lower than the state-of-the-art SVD-based coded technique in these two dimensions, and the complexity gain is greater than the uncoded case. Moreover, these aforementioned complexity reductions are achieved with only negligible or modest loss in performance.

Optimal Algorithms for Near-Hitless Network Restoration via Diversity Coding

Diversity coding is a network restoration technique which offers near-hitless restoration, while other state-of-the art techniques are significantly slower. Furthermore, the extra spare capacity requirement of diversity coding is competitive with the others. Previously, we developed heuristic algorithms to employ diversity coding structures in networks with arbitrary topology. This paper presents two algorithms to solve the network design problems using diversity coding in an optimal manner. The first technique pre-provisions static traffic whereas the second technique carries out the dynamic provisioning of the traffic on-demand. In both cases, diversity coding results in smaller restoration time, simpler synchronization, and much reduced signaling complexity than the existing techniques in the literature. A Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulation and an algorithm based on Integer Linear Programming (ILP) are developed for pre-provisioning and dynamic provisioning, respectively. Simulation results indicate that diversity coding has significantly higher restoration speed than Shared Path Protection (SPP) and p-cycle techniques. It requires more extra capacity than the p-cycle technique and SPP. However, the increase in the total capacity is negligible compared to the increase in the restoration speed.

Power Control in Multi-Layer Cellular Networks

We investigate the possible performance gains of power control in multi-layer cellular systems where microcells and picocells are distributed within macrocells. Although multilayers in cellular networks help increase system capacity and coverage, and can reduce total energy consumption; they cause interference, reducing the performance of the network. Therefore, downlink transmit power levels of multi-layer hierarchical cellular networks need to be controlled in order to fully exploit their benefits. In this work, we present an analytical derivation to determine optimum power levels for two-layer cellular networks and generalize our solution to multi-layer cellular networks. We also simulate our results in a typical multi-layer network setup and observe significant power savings compared to single-layer cellular networks.

Reduced Complexity Sphere Decoding

In Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, Sphere Decoding (SD) can achieve performance equivalent to full search Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding, with reduced complexity. Several researchers reported techniques that reduce the complexity of SD further. In this paper, a new technique is introduced which decreases the computational complexity of SD substantially, without sacrificing performance. The reduction is accomplished by deconstructing the decoding metric to decrease the number of computations and exploiting the structure of a lattice representation. Furthermore, an application of SD, employing a proposed smart implementation with very low computational complexity is introduced. This application calculates the soft bit metrics of a bit-interleaved convolutional-coded MIMO system in an efficient manner. Based on the reduced complexity SD, the proposed smart implementation employs the initial radius acquired by Zero-Forcing Decision Feedback Equalization (ZF-DFE) which ensures no empty spheres. Other than that, a technique of a particular data structure is also incorporated to efficiently reduce the number of executions carried out by SD. Simulation results show that these approaches achieve substantial gains in terms of the computational complexity for both uncoded and coded MIMO systems.

An Upper Bound to the Marginal PDF of the Ordered Eigenvalues of Wishart Matrices

Diversity analysis of a number of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) applications requires the calculation of the expectation of a function whose variables are the ordered multiple eigenvalues of a Wishart matrix. In order to carry out this calculation, we need the marginal pdf of an arbitrary subset of the ordered eigenvalues. In this letter, we derive an upper bound to the marginal pdf of the eigenvalues. The derivation is based on the multiple integration of the well-known joint pdf, which is very complicated due to the exponential factors of the joint pdf. We suggest an alternative function that provides simpler calculation of the multiple integration. As a result, the marginal pdf is shown to be bounded by a multivariate polynomial with a given degree. After a standard bounding procedure in a Pairwise Error Probability (PEP) analysis, by applying the marginal pdf to the calculation of the expectation, the diversity order for a number of MIMO systems can be obtained in a simple manner. Simulation results that support the analysis are presented.

Reduced Complexity Decoding for Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Constellation Precoding

Multiple beamforming is realized by singular value decomposition of the channel matrix which is assumed to be known to both the transmitter and the receiver. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) can achieve full diversity as long as the code rate Rc and the number of employed subchannels S satisfy the condition RcS<=1. Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming with Constellation Precoding (BICMB-CP), on the other hand, can achieve full diversity without the condition RcS<=1. However, the decoding complexity of BICMB-CP is much higher than BICMB. In this paper, a reduced complexity decoding technique, which is based on Sphere Decoding (SD), is proposed to reduce the complexity of Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding for BICMB-CP. The decreased complexity decoding achieves several orders of magnitude reduction, in terms of the average number of real multiplications needed to acquire one precoded bit metric, not only with respect to conventional ML decoding, but also, with respect to conventional SD.

Golden Coded Multiple Beamforming

The Golden Code is a full-rate full-diversity space-time code, which achieves maximum coding gain for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems with two transmit and two receive antennas. Since four information symbols taken from an M-QAM constellation are selected to construct one Golden Code codeword, a maximum likelihood decoder using sphere decoding has the worst-case complexity of O(M^4), when the Channel State Information (CSI) is available at the receiver. Previously, this worst-case complexity was reduced to O(M^(2.5)) without performance degradation. When the CSI is known by the transmitter as well as the receiver, beamforming techniques that employ singular value decomposition are commonly used in MIMO systems. In the absence of channel coding, when a single symbol is transmitted, these systems achieve the full diversity order provided by the channel. Whereas this property is lost when multiple symbols are simultaneously transmitted. However, uncoded multiple beamforming can achieve the full diversity order by adding a properly designed constellation precoder. For 2 \times 2 Fully Precoded Multiple Beamforming (FPMB), the general worst-case decoding complexity is O(M). In this paper, Golden Coded Multiple Beamforming (GCMB) is proposed, which transmits the Golden Code through 2 \times 2 multiple beamforming. GCMB achieves the full diversity order and its performance is similar to general MIMO systems using the Golden Code and FPMB, whereas the worst-case decoding complexity of O(sqrt(M)) is much lower. The extension of GCMB to larger dimensions is also discussed.
