A characterization of limiting functions arising in mod-* convergence

In this note, we characterize the limiting functions in mod-Gausssian convergence; our approach sheds a new light on the nature of mod-Gaussian convergence as well. Our results in fact more generally apply to mod-* convergence, where * stands for any family of probability distributions whose Fourier transforms do not vanish. We moreover provide new examples, including two new examples of (restricted) mod-Cauchy convergence from arithmetics related to Dedekind sums and the linking number of modular geodesics.

On the conductor of cohomological transforms

In the analytic study of trace functions of $\ell$-adic sheaves over finite fields, a crucial issue is to control the conductor of sheaves constructed in various ways. We consider cohomological transforms on the affine line over a finite field which have trace functions given by linear operators with an additive character of a rational function in two variables as a kernel. We prove that the conductor of such a transform is bounded in terms of the complexity of the input sheaf and of the rational function defining the kernel, and discuss applications of this result, including motivating examples arising from the Polymath8 project.

On moments of twisted $L$-functions

We study the average of the product of the central values of two $L$-functions of modular forms $f$ and $g$ twisted by Dirichlet characters to a large prime modulus $q$. As our principal tools, we use spectral theory to develop bounds on averages of shifted convolution sums with differences ranging over multiples of $q$, and we use the theory of Deligne and Katz to estimate certain complete exponential sums in several variables and prove new bounds on bilinear forms in Kloosterman sums with power savings when both variables are near the square root of $q$. When at least one of the forms $f$ and $g$ is non-cuspidal, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mixed second moment of twisted $L$-functions with a power saving error term. In particular, when both are non-cuspidal, this gives a significant improvement on M.~Young's asymptotic evaluation of the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions. In the general case, the asymptotic formula with a power saving is proved under a conjectural estimate for certain bilinear forms in Kloosterman sums.

Some applications of smooth bilinear forms with Kloosterman sums

We revisit a recent bound of I. Shparlinski and T. P. Zhang on bilinear forms with Kloosterman sums, and prove an extension for correlation sums of Kloosterman sums against Fourier coefficients of modular forms. We use these bounds to improve on earlier results on sums of Kloosterman sums along the primes and on the error term of the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions.

Algebraic twists of modular forms and Hecke orbits

We consider the question of the correlation of Fourier coefficients of modular forms with functions of algebraic origin. We establish the absence of correlation in considerable generality (with a power saving of Burgess type) and a corresponding equidistribution property for twisted Hecke orbits. This is done by exploiting the amplification method and the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields, relying in particular on the ell-adic Fourier transform introduced by Deligne and studied by Katz and Laumon.

Fourier coefficients of GL(N) automorphic forms in arithmetic progressions

We show that the multiple divisor functions of integers in invertible residue classes modulo a prime number, as well as the Fourier coefficients of GL(N) Maass cusp forms for all N larger than 2, satisfy a central limit theorem in a suitable range, generalizing the case N=2 treated by E. Fouvry, S. Ganguly, E. Kowalski and P. Michel. Such universal Gaussian behaviour relies on a deep equidistribution result of products of hyper-Kloosterman sums.

Counting sheaves using spherical codes

Using the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields and bounds for the size of spherical codes, we give explicit upper bounds, of polynomial size with respect to the size of the field, for the number of geometric isomorphism classes of geometrically irreducible ell-adic middle-extension sheaves on a curve over a finite field which are pointwise pure of weight 0 and have bounded ramification and rank. As an application, we show that "random" functions defined on a finite field can not usually be approximated by short linear combinations of trace functions of sheaves with small complexity.

Gaussian distribution for the divisor function and Hecke eigenvalues in arithmetic progressions

We show that, in a restricted range, the divisor function of integers in residue classes modulo a prime follows a Gaussian distribution, and a similar result for Hecke eigenvalues of classical holomorphic cusp forms. Furthermore, we obtain the joint distribution of these arithmetic functions in two related residue classes. These results follow from asymptotic evaluations of the relevant moments, and depend crucially on results on the independence of monodromy groups related to products of Kloosterman sums.

Averages of Euler products, distribution of singular series and the ubiquity of Poisson distribution

We discuss in some detail the general problem of computing averages of convergent Euler products, and apply this to examples arising from singular series for the $k$-tuple conjecture and more general problems of polynomial representation of primes. We show that the singular series for the $k$-tuple conjecture have a limiting distribution when taken over $k$-tuples with (distinct) entries of growing size, and observe that its moments have a curious symmetry property. We also give conditional arguments that would imply that the number of twin primes (or more general polynomial prime patterns) in suitable short intervals are asymptotically Poisson distributed.

On modular signs

We consider some questions related to the signs of Hecke eigenvalues or Fourier coefficients of classical modular forms. One problem is to determine to what extent those signs, for suitable sets of primes, determine uniquely the modular form, and we give both individual and statistical results. The second problem, which has been considered by a number of authors, is to determine the size, in terms of the conductor and weight, of the first sign-change of Hecke eigenvalues. Here we improve significantly the recent estimate of Iwaniec, Kohnen and Sengupta.
