On the finiteness of the group associated with weighted walks in multidimensional orthants

In the study of walks with small steps confined to multidimensional orthants, a certain group of transformations plays a central role. In particular, several techniques to potentially compute the generating function, including the orbit sum method, can only be applied when this group is finite. In this note, we present three new results concerning this group. First, in two dimensions, we provide a complete characterization of the weight parameters that yield a finite group. In higher dimensions, we show that whenever the group is finite, it must necessarily be isomorphic to a simpler reflection group. Finally, in dimension three, we give a full classification of the parameters leading to a finite group that also satisfies an additional Weyl property.

Quantum Limits on product manifolds

We establish some properties of quantum limits on a product manifold, proving for instance that, under appropriate assumptions, the quantum limits on the product of manifolds are absolutely continuous if the quantum limits on each manifolds are absolutely continuous. On a product of Riemannian manifolds satisfying the minimal multiplicity property, we prove that a periodic geodesic can never be charged by a quantum limit.

Observability for generalized Schrödinger equations and quantum limits on product manifolds

Given a closed product Riemannian manifold N = M x M equipped with the product Riemannian metric g = h + h , we explore the observability properties for the generalized Schr{ö}dinger equation i$\partial$ t u = F (g)u, where g is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N and F : [0, +$\infty$) $\rightarrow$ [0, +$\infty$) is an increasing function. In this note, we prove observability in finite time on any open subset $ω$ satisfying the so-called Vertical Geometric Control Condition, stipulating that any vertical geodesic meets $ω$, under the additional assumption that the spectrum of F (g) satisfies a gap condition. A first consequence is that observability on $ω$ for the Schr{ö}dinger equation is a strictly weaker property than the usual Geometric Control Condition on any product of spheres. A second consequence is that the Dirac measure along any geodesic of N is never a quantum limit.

Optimal transportation between hypersurfaces bounding some strictly convex domains

Let $M,N$ be two smooth compact hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$ which bound strictly convex domains equipped with two absolutely continuous measures $μ$ and $ν$ (with respect to the volume measures of $M$ and $N$). We consider the optimal transportation from $μ$ to $ν$ for the quadratic cost. Let $(ϕ:m \to \mathbb{R},ψ:N \to \mathbb{R})$ be some functions which achieve the supremum in the Kantorovich formulation of the problem and which satisfy $$ ψ(y) = \inf_{z\in M} \Bigl( \frac{1}{2}|y-z|^2 -φ(z)\Bigr); φ(x)=\inf_{z\in N} \Bigl( \frac{1}{2}|x-z|^2 -ψ(z)\Bigr).$$ Define for $y \in N$, $$φ^\Box(y) = \sup_{z\in M} \Bigl( \frac{1}{2}|y-z|^2 -φ(z)\Bigr).$$ In this short paper, we exhibit a relationship between the regularity of $φ^\Box$ and the existence of a solution to the Monge problem.

The spinorial τ-invariant and 0-dimensional surgery

Let $M$ be a compact manifold with a metric $g$ and with a fixed spin structure $χ$. Let $λ\_1^+(g)$ be the first non-negative eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on $(M,g,χ)$. We set $$τ(M,χ):= \sup \inf λ\_1^+(g)$$ where the infimum runs over all metrics $g$ of volume 1 in a conformal class $[g\_0]$ on $M$ and where the supremum runs over all conformal classes $[g\_0]$ on $M$. Let $(M^#,χ^#)$ be obtained from $(M,χ)$ by 0-dimensional surgery. We prove that $$τ(M^#,χ^#)\geq τ(M,χ).$$ As a corollary we can calculate $τ(M,χ)$ for any Riemann surface $M$.

About the mass of certain second order elliptic operators

Let $(M,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n \geq 3$ and let $f\in C^{\infty}(M)$, such that the operator $P_f:= Δ_g+f$ is positive. If $g$ is flat near some point $p$ and $f$ vanishes around $p$, we can define the mass of $P_f$ as the constant term in the expansion of the Green function of $P_f$ at $p$. In this paper, we establish many results on the mass of such operators. In particular, if $f:= \frac{n-2}{4(n-1)} \scal_g$, i.e. if $P_f$ is the Yamabe operator, we show the following result: assume that there exists a closed simply connected non-spin manifold $M$ such that the mass is non-negative for every metric $g$ as above on $M$, then the mass is non-negative for every such metric on every closed manifold of the same dimension as $M$.

Low-dimensional surgery and the Yamabe invariant

Assume that M is a compact n-dimensional manifold and that N is obtained by surgery along a k-dimensional sphere, k\le n-3. The smooth Yamabe invariants σ(M) and σ(N) satisfy σ(N)\ge min (σ(M),Λ) for Λ>0. We derive explicit lower bounds for Λin dimensions where previous methods failed, namely for (n,k)\in {(4,1),(5,1),(5,2),(6,3),(9,1),(10,1)}. With methods from surgery theory and bordism theory several gap phenomena for smooth Yamabe invariants can be deduced.

A non-existence result for a generalization of the equations of the conformal method in general relativity

The constraint equations of general relativity can in many cases be solved by the conformal method. We show that a slight modification of the equations of the conformal method admits no solution for a broad range of parameters. This suggests that the question of existence or non-existence of solutions to the original equations is more subtle than could perhaps be expected.

Square-integrability of solutions of the Yamabe equation

We show that solutions of the Yamabe equation on certain n-dimensional non-compact Riemannian manifolds which are bounded and L^p for p=2n/(n-2) are also L^2. This L^p-L^2-implication provides explicit constants in the surgery-monotonicity formula for the smooth Yamabe invariant in a previous article of the authors. As an application we see that the smooth Yamabe invariant of any 2-connected compact 7-dimensional manifold is at least 74.5. Similar conclusions follow in dimension 8 and in dimensions at least 11.

An isoperimetric constant associated to horizons in $S^3$ blown-up at two points

Let $g$ be a metric on $S^3$ with positive Yamabe constant. When blowing up $g$ at two points, a scalar flat manifold with two asymptotically flat ends is produced and this manifold will have compact minimal surfaces. We introduce the $\Th$-invariant for $g$ which is an isoperimetric constant for the cylindrical domain inside the outermost minimal surface of the blown-up metric. Further we find relations between $\Th$ and the Yamabe constant and the existence of horizons in the blown-up metric on $\mR^3$.

Surgery and the spinorial tau-invariant

We associate to a compact spin manifold M a real-valued invariant τ(M) by taking the supremum over all conformal classes over the infimum inside each conformal class of the first positive Dirac eigenvalue, normalized to volume 1. This invariant is a spinorial analogue of Schoen's $σ$-constant, also known as the smooth Yamabe number. We prove that if N is obtained from M by surgery of codimension at least 2, then $τ(N) \geq \min\{τ(M),Λ_n\}$ with $Λ_n>0$. Various topological conclusions can be drawn, in particular that τis a spin-bordism invariant below $Λ_n$. Below $Λ_n$, the values of $τ$ cannot accumulate from above when varied over all manifolds of a fixed dimension.
