Cut-off phenomenon for the ax+b Markov chain over a finite field

We study the Markov chain $x_{n+1}=ax_n+b_n$ on a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$, where $a \in \mathbb{F}_p$ is fixed and $b_n$ are independent and identically distributed random variables in $\mathbb{F}_p$. Conditionally on the Riemann hypothesis for all Dedekind zeta functions, we show that the chain exhibits a cut-off phenomenon for most primes $p$ and most values of $a \in \mathbb{F}_p$. We also obtain weaker, but unconditional, upper bounds for the mixing time.

Entropy of Bernoulli convolutions and uniform exponential growth for linear groups

The exponential growth rate of non polynomially growing subgroups of $GL_d$ is conjectured to admit a uniform lower bound. This is known for non-amenable subgroups, while for amenable subgroups it is known to imply the Lehmer conjecture from number theory. In this note, we show that it is equivalent to the Lehmer conjecture. This is done by establishing a lower bound for the entropy of the random walk on the semigroup generated by the maps $x\mapsto λ\cdot x\pm 1$, where $λ$ is an algebraic number. We give a bound in terms of the Mahler measure of $λ$. We also derive a bound on the dimension of Bernoulli convolutions.

Projective geometries arising from Elekes-Szabó problems

We generalise the Elekes-Szabó theorem to arbitrary arity and dimension and characterise the complex algebraic varieties without power saving. The characterisation involves certain algebraic subgroups of commutative algebraic groups endowed with an extra structure arising from a skew field of endomorphisms. We also extend the Erdős-Szemerédi sum-product phenomenon to elliptic curves. Our approach is based on Hrushovski's framework of pseudo-finite dimensions and the abelian group configuration theorem.

Irreducibility of random polynomials of large degree

We consider random polynomials with independent identically distributed coefficients with a fixed law. Assuming the Riemann hypothesis for Dedekind zeta functions, we prove that such polynomials are irreducible and their Galois groups contain the alternating group with high probability as the degree goes to infinity. This settles a conjecture of Odlyzko and Poonen conditionally on RH for Dedekind zeta functions.

On the dimension of Bernoulli convolutions

The Bernoulli convolution with parameter $λ\in(0,1)$ is the probability measure $μ_λ$ that is the law of the random variable $\sum_{n\ge0}\pmλ^n$, where the signs are independent unbiased coin tosses. We prove that each parameter $λ\in(1/2,1)$ with $\dimμ_λ<1$ can be approximated by algebraic parameters $ξ\in(1/2,1)$ within an error of order $\exp(-deg(ξ)^{A})$ for any number $A$, such that $\dimμ_ξ<1$. As a corollary, we conclude that $\dimμ_λ=1$ for each of $λ=\ln 2, e^{-1/2}, π/4$. These are the first explicit examples of such transcendental parameters. Moreover, we show that Lehmer's conjecture implies the existence of a constant $a<1$ such that $\dimμ_λ=1$ for all $λ\in(a,1)$.

Lectures on approximate groups and Hilbert's 5th problem

This paper gathers four lectures, based on a mini-course at IMA in 2014, whose aim was to discuss the structure of approximate subgroups of an arbitrary group, following the works of Hrushovski and of Green, Tao and the author. Along the way we discuss the proof of the Gleason-Yamabe theorem on Hilbert's 5th problem about the structure of locally compact groups and explain its relevance to approximate groups. We also present several applications, in particular to uniform diameter bounds for finite groups and to the determination of scaling limits of vertex transitive graphs with large diameter.

Nilprogressions and groups with moderate growth

We show that doubling at some large scale in a Cayley graph implies uniform doubling at all subsequent scales. The proof is based on the structure theorem for approximate subgroups proved by Green, Tao and the first author. We also give a number of applications to the geometry and spectrum of finite Cayley graphs. For example, we show that a finite group has moderate growth in the sense of Diaconis and Saloff-Coste if and only if its diameter is larger than a fixed power of the cardinality of the group. We call such groups almost flat and show that they have a subgroup of bounded index admitting a cyclic quotient of comparable diameter. We also give bounds on the Cheeger constant, first eigenvalue of the Laplacian, and mixing time. This can be seen as a finite-group version of Gromov's theorem on groups with polynomial growth. It also improves on a result of Lackenby regarding property (tau) in towers of coverings. Another consequence is a universal upper bound on the diameter of all finite simple groups, independent of the CFSG.

On metric diophantine approximation in matrices and Lie groups

We study the diophantine exponent of analytic submanifolds of the space of m by n real matrices, answering questions of Beresnevich, Kleinbock and Margulis. We identify a family of algebraic obstructions to the extremality of such a submanifold, and give a formula for the exponent when the submanifold is algebraic and defined over the rationals. We then apply these results to the determination of the diophantine exponent of rational nilpotent Lie groups.

Approximate subgroups and super-strong approximation

Surveying some of the recent developments on approximate subgroups and super-strong approximation for thin groups, we describe the Bourgain-Gamburd method for establishing spectral gaps for finite groups and the proof of the classification of approximate subgroups of semisimple algebraic groups over finite fields. We then give a proof of the super-strong approximation for mod $p$ quotients via random matrix products and a quantitative version of strong approximation. Some applications to the group sieve are also presented.

Diophantine properties of nilpotent Lie groups

A finitely generated subgroup Γ of a real Lie group G is said to be Diophantine if there is β> 0 such that non-trivial elements in the word ball B_Γ(n) centered at the identity never approach the identity of G closer than |B_Γ (n)|^{-β}. A Lie group G is said to be Diophantine if for every k > 0, a random k-tuple in G generates a Diophantine subgroup. Semi-simple Lie groups are conjectured to be Diophantine but very little is proven in this direction. We give a characterization of Diophantine nilpotent Lie groups in terms of the ideal of laws of their Lie algebra. In particular we show that nilpotent Lie groups of class at most 5, or derived length at most 2, as well as rational nilpotent Lie groups are Diophantine. We also find that there are non Diophantine nilpotent and solvable (non nilpotent) Lie groups.

Geometry of Locally Compact Groups of Polynomial Growth and Shape of Large Balls

We get asymptotics for the volume of large balls in an arbitrary locally compact group G with polynomial growth. This is done via a study of the geometry of G and a generalization of P. Pansu's thesis. In particular, we show that any such G is weakly commensurable to some simply connected solvable Lie group S, the Lie shadow of G. We also show that large balls in G have an asymptotic shape, i.e. after a suitable renormalization, they converge to a limiting compact set which can be interpreted geometrically. We then discuss the speed of convergence, treat some examples and give an application to ergodic theory. We also answer a question of Burago about left invariant metrics and recover some results of Stoll on the irrationality of growth series of nilpotent groups.

On the rate of convergence to the asymptotic cone for nilpotent groups and subFinsler geometry

Addressing a question of Gromov, we give a rate in Pansu's theorem about the convergence in Gromov-Hausdorff metric of a finitely generated nilpotent group equipped with a left-invariant word metric scaled by a factor 1/n towards its asymptotic cone. We show that due to the possible presence of abnormal geodesics in the asymptotic cone, this rate cannot be better than n^{1/2} for general non-abelian nilpotent groups. As a corollary we also get an error term of the form vol(B(n))=cn^d + O(n^{d-2/(3r)}) for the volume of Cayley balls of a nilpotent group with nilpotency class r. We also state a number of related conjectural statements.

A Height Gap Theorem For Finite Subsets Of GL_d(\bar{Q}) and Non Amenable Subgroups

We show a global adelic analog of the classical Margulis Lemma from hyperbolic geometry. We introduce a conjugation invariant normalized height $\hat{h}(F)$ of a finite set of matrices $F$ in $GL_{n}(\bar{\Bbb{Q}})$ which is the adelic analog of the minimal displacement on a symmetric space. We then show, making use of theorems of Bilu and Zhang on the equidistribution of Galois orbits of small points, that $\hat{h}(F)>ε$ as soon as $F$ generates a non-virtually solvable subgroup of $SL_{n}(\bar{\Bbb{Q}}),$ where $ε=ε(n)>0$ is an absolute constant.

Contractions and expansion

Let A be a finite set of reals and let K >= 1 be a real number. Suppose that for each a in A we are given an injective map f_a : A -> R which fixes a and contracts other points towards it in the sense that |a - f_a(x)| <= |a - x|/K for all x in A, and such that f_a(x) always lies between a and x. Then the union of the f_a(A) has cardinality >= K|A|/10 - O_K(1). An immediate consequence of this is the estimate |A + K.A| >= K|A|/10 - O_K(1), which is a slightly weakened version of a result of Bukh.

On conjugacy growth of linear groups

We investigate the conjugacy growth of finitely generated linear groups. We show that finitely generated non-virtually-solvable subgroups of GL_d have uniform exponential conjugacy growth and in fact that the number of distinct polynomials arising as characteristic polynomials of the elements of the ball of radius n for the word metric has exponential growth rate bounded away from 0 in terms of the dimension d only.

Strongly dense free subgroups of semisimple algebraic groups

We show that (with one possible exception) there exist strongly dense free subgroups in any semisimple algebraic group over a large enough field. These are nonabelian free subgroups all of whose subgroups are either cyclic or Zariski dense. As a consequence, we get new generating results for finite simple groups of Lie type and a strengthening of a theorem of Borel related to the Hausdorff-Banach-Tarski paradox. In a sequel to this paper, we use this result to also establish uniform expansion properties for random Cayley graphs over finite simple groups of Lie type.

The structure of approximate groups

Let K >= 1 be a parameter. A K-approximate group is a finite set A in a (local) group which contains the identity, is symmetric, and such that A^2 is covered by K left translates of A. The main result of this paper is a qualitative description of approximate groups as being essentially finite-by-nilpotent, answering a conjecture of H. Helfgott and E. Lindenstrauss. This may be viewed as a generalisation of the Freiman-Ruzsa theorem on sets of small doubling in the integers to arbitrary groups. We begin by establishing a correspondence principle between approximate groups and locally compact (local) groups that allows us to recover many results recently established in a fundamental paper of Hrushovski. In particular we establish that approximate groups can be approximately modeled by Lie groups. To prove our main theorem we apply some additional arguments essentially due to Gleason. These arose in the solution of Hilbert's fifth problem in the 1950s. Applications of our main theorem include a finitary refinement of Gromov's theorem, as well as a generalized Margulis lemma conjectured by Gromov and a result on the virtual nilpotence of the fundamental group of Ricci almost nonnegatively curved manifolds.

Approximate subgroups of linear groups

We establish various results on the structure of approximate subgroups in linear groups such as SL_n(k) that were previously announced by the authors. For example, generalising a result of Helfgott (who handled the cases n = 2 and 3), we show that any approximate subgroup of SL_n(F_q) which generates the group must be either very small or else nearly all of SL_n(F_q). The argument generalises to other absolutely almost simple connected (and non-commutative) algebraic groups G over a finite field k. In a subsequent paper, we will give applications of this result to the expansion properties of Cayley graphs.

Linear Approximate Groups

This is an informal announcement of results to be described and proved in detail in a paper to appear. We give various results on the structure of approximate subgroups in linear groups such as $\SL_n(k)$. For example, generalising a result of Helfgott (who handled the cases $n = 2$ and 3), we show that any approximate subgroup of $\SL_n(\F_q)$ which generates the group must be either very small or else nearly all of $\SL_n(\F_q)$. The argument is valid for all Chevalley groups $G(\F_q)$.
