Reducibility and nonlinear stability for a quasi-periodically forced NLS

Motivated by the problem of long time stability vs. instability of KAM tori of the Nonlinear cubic Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the two dimensional torus $\mathbb T^2:= (\mathbb R/2π\mathbb Z)^2$, we consider a quasi-periodically forced NLS equation on $\mathbb T^2$ arising from the linearization of the NLS at a KAM torus. We prove a reducibility result as well as long time stability of the origin. The main novelty is to obtain the precise asymptotic expansion of the frequencies which allows us to impose Melnikov conditions at arbitrary order.

On the normal form of the Kirchhoff equation

Consider the Kirchhoff equation $$ \partial_{tt} u - Δu \Big( 1 + \int_{\mathbb{T}^d} |\nabla u|^2 \Big) = 0 $$ on the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. In a previous paper we proved that, after a first step of quasilinear normal form, the resonant cubic terms show an integrable behavior, namely they give no contribution to the energy estimates. This leads to the question whether the same structure also emerges at the next steps of normal form. In this paper, we perform the second step and give a negative answer to the previous question: the quintic resonant terms give a nonzero contribution to the energy estimates. This is not only a formal calculation, as we prove that the normal form transformation is bounded between Sobolev spaces.

Non-Existence of Theta-Shaped Self-Similarly Shrinking Networks Moving by Curvature

We prove that there are no networks homeomorphic to the Greek "theta" letter (a double cell) embedded in the plane with two triple junctions with angles of $120$ degrees, such that under the motion by curvature they are self-similarly shrinking. This fact completes the classification of the self-similarly shrinking networks in the plane with at most two triple junctions.

Asymptotic behavior of an elastic satellite with internal friction

We study the dynamics of an elastic body whose shape and position evolve due to the gravitational forces exerted by a pointlike planet. The main result is that, if all the deformations of the satellite dissipate some energy, then under a suitable nondegeneracy condition there are only three possible outcomes for the dynamics: (i) the orbit of the satellite is unbounded, (ii) the satellite falls on the planet, (iii) the satellite is captured in synchronous resonance i.e. its orbit is asymptotic to a motion in which the barycenter moves on a circular orbit, and the satellite moves rigidly, always showing the same face to the planet. The result is obtained by making use of LaSalle's invariance principle and by a careful kinematic analysis showing that energy stops dissipating only on synchronous orbits. We also use in quite an extensive way the fact that conservative elastodynamics is a Hamiltonian system invariant under the action of the rotation group.
