Conjugacy Growth and Conjugacy Width of Certain Branch Groups

The conjugacy growth function counts the number of distinct conjugacy classes in a ball of radius $n$. We give a lower bound for the conjugacy growth of certain branch groups, among them the Grigorchuk group. This bound is a function of intermediate growth. We further proof that certain branch groups have the property that every element can be expressed as a product of uniformly boundedly many conjugates of the generators. We call this property bounded conjugacy width. We also show how bounded conjugacy width relates to other algebraic properties of groups and apply these results to study the palindromic width of some branch groups.

Palindromic Width of Wreath Products

We show that the wreath product $G \wr \mathbb{Z}^n$ of any finitely generated group $G$ with $\mathbb{Z}^n$ has finite palindromic width. We also show that $C \wr A$ has finite palindromic width if $C$ has finite commutator width and $A$ is a finitely generated infinite abelian group. Further we prove that if $H$ is a non-abelian group with finite palindromic width and $G$ any finitely generated group, then every element of the subgroup $G' \wr H$ can be expressed as a product of uniformly boundedly many palindromes. From this we obtain that $P \wr H$ has finite palindromic width if $P$ is a perfect group and further that $G \wr F$ has finite palindromic width for any finite, non-abelian group $F$.

Palindromic words in simple groups

A palindrome is a word that reads the same left-to-right as right-to-left. We show that every simple group has a finite generating set $X$, such that every element of it can be written as a palindrome in the letters of $X$. Moreover, every simple group has palindromic width $pw(G,X)=1$, where $X$ only differs by at most one Nielsen-transformation from any given generating set. On the contrary, we prove that all non-abelian finite simple groups $G$ also have a generating set $S$ with $pw(G,S)>1$. As a by-product of our work we also obtain that every just-infinite group has finite palindromic width with respect to a finite generating set. This provides first examples of groups with finite palindromic width but infinite commutator width.

On the finitely generated Hausdorff spectrum of spinal groups

We study the finitely generated Hausdorff spectrum of spinal automorphism groups acting on rooted trees. Given any $α\in [0,1]$, we construct a branch group $G_α$ such that $G_α$ has a finitely generated subgroup $H$ where $H$ has Hausdorff dimension $α$ in $G$. Using results by Barnea, Shalev and Klopsch we further deduce that the finitely generated Hausdorff spectrum of this group $G_α$ contains $\mathcal{L}_α\cup ([0, 1] \cap \mathcal{L})$, where $\mathcal{L}$ is a countable subset of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathcal{L}_α$ is a certain set of countably many irrational numbers in the interval $[0,α]$. This answers a question of Benjamin Klopsch.

A finitely generated branch group of exponential growth without free subgroups

We will give an example of a branch group $G$ that has exponential growth but does not contain any non-abelian free subgroups. This answers question 16 from \cite{Bartholdi} positively. The proof demonstrates how to construct a non-trivial word $w_{a,b}(x,y)$ for any $a,b \in G$ such that $w_{a,b}(a,b) = 1$. The group $G$ is not just-infinite. We prove that every normal subgroup of $G$ is finitely generated as an abstract group and every proper quotient soluble. Further, $G$ has infinite virtual first Betti number but is not large.
