Two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory on a near-term quantum simulator: variational quantum optimization, confinement, and topological order

We propose an implementation of a two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory model on a shallow quantum circuit, involving a number of single and two-qubits gates comparable to what can be achieved with present-day and near-future technologies. The ground state preparation is numerically analyzed on a small lattice with a variational quantum algorithm, which requires a small number of parameters to reach high fidelities and can be efficiently scaled up on larger systems. Despite the reduced size of the lattice we consider, a transition between confined and deconfined regimes can be detected by measuring expectation values of Wilson loop operators or the topological entropy. Moreover, if periodic boundary conditions are implemented, the same optimal solution is transferable among all four different topological sectors, without any need for further optimization on the variational parameters. Our work shows that variational quantum algorithms provide a useful technique to be added in the growing toolbox for digital simulations of lattice gauge theories.

Dimensional reduction of electromagnetism

We derive one- and two-dimensional models for classical electromagnetism by making use of Hadamard's method of descent. Low-dimensional electromagnetism is conceived as a specialization of the higher dimensional one, in which the fields are uniform along the additional spatial directions. This strategy yields two independent electromagnetisms in two spatial coordinates, and four independent electromagnetisms in one spatial coordinate.

One-dimensional extended Hubbard model with soft-core potential

We investigate the $T=0$ phase diagram of a variant of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model where particles interact via a finite-range soft-shoulder potential. Using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) simulations, we evidence the appearance of Cluster Luttinger Liquid (CLL) phases, similarly to what first predicted in a hard-core bosonic chain [M. Mattioli, M. Dalmonte, W. Lechner, and G. Pupillo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 165302]. As the interaction strength parameters change, we find different types of clusters, that encode the order of the ground state in a semi-classical approximation and give rise to different types of CLLs. Interestingly, we find that the conventional Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid (TLL) is separated by a critical line with a central charge $c=5/2$, along which the two (spin and charge) bosonic degrees of freedom (corresponding to $c=1$ each) combine in a supersymmetric way with an emergent fermionic excitation ($c=1/2$). We also demonstrate that there are no significant spin correlations.

Real Time Dynamics and Confinement in the $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ Schwinger-Weyl lattice model for 1+1 QED

We study the out-of-equilibrium properties of $1+1$ dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED), discretized via the staggered-fermion Schwinger model with an Abelian $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ gauge group. We look at two relevant phenomena: first, we analyze the stability of the Dirac vacuum with respect to particle/antiparticle pair production, both spontaneous and induced by an external electric field; then, we examine the string breaking mechanism. We observe a strong effect of confinement, which acts by suppressing both spontaneous pair production and string breaking into quark/antiquark pairs, indicating that the system dynamics displays a number of out-of-equilibrium features.

Topological phases in two-legged Heisenberg ladders with alternating interactions

We analyze the possible existence of topological phases in two-legged spin ladders considering a staggered interaction in both chains. When the staggered interaction in one chain is shifted by one site with respect to the other chain, the model can be mapped, in the continuum limit, into a non linear sigma model NL$σ$M plus a topological term which is nonvanishing when the number of legs is two. This implies the existence of a critical point which distinguishes two phases. We perform a numerical analysis of energy levels, parity and string non-local order parameters, correlation functions between $x,y,z$ components of spins at the edges of an open ladder, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum and the entanglement entropy in order to characterize these two different phases. Finally, we identify one phase with a Mott insulator and the other one with a Haldane insulator.

On the geometry of mixed states and the Fisher information tensor

In this paper, we will review the co-adjoint orbit formulation of finite dimensional quantum mechanics, and in this framework, we will interpret the notion of quantum Fisher information index (and metric). Following previous work of part of the authors, who introduced the definition of Fisher information tensor, we will show how its antisymmetric part is the pullback of the natural Kostant-Kirillov-Souriau symplectic form along some natural diffeomorphism. In order to do this, we will need to understand the symmetric logarithmic derivative as a proper 1-form, settling the issues about its very definition and explicit computation. Moreover, the fibration of co-adjoint orbits, seen as spaces of mixed states, is also discussed.

Discrete Abelian Gauge Theories for Quantum Simulations of QED

We study a lattice gauge theory in Wilson's Hamiltonian formalism. In view of the realization of a quantum simulator for QED in one dimension, we introduce an Abelian model with a discrete gauge symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_n$, approximating the $U(1)$ theory for large $n$. We analyze the role of the finiteness of the gauge fields and the properties of physical states, that satisfy a generalized Gauss's law. We finally discuss a possible implementation strategy, that involves an effective dynamics in physical space.

Long-range Ising and Kitaev Models: Phases, Correlations and Edge Modes

We analyze the quantum phases, correlation functions and edge modes for a class of spin-1/2 and fermionic models related to the 1D Ising chain in the presence of a transverse field. These models are the Ising chain with anti-ferromagnetic long-range interactions that decay with distance $r$ as $1/r^α$, as well as a related class of fermionic Hamiltonians that generalise the Kitaev chain, where both the hopping and pairing terms are long-range and their relative strength can be varied. For these models, we provide the phase diagram for all exponents $α$, based on an analysis of the entanglement entropy, the decay of correlation functions, and the edge modes in the case of open chains. We demonstrate that violations of the area law can occur for $α\lesssim1$, while connected correlation functions can decay with a hybrid exponential and power-law behaviour, with a power that is $α$-dependent. Interestingly, for the fermionic models we provide an exact analytical derivation for the decay of the correlation functions at every $α$. Along the critical lines, for all models breaking of conformal symmetry is argued at low enough $α$. For the fermionic models we show that the edge modes, massless for $α\gtrsim 1$, can acquire a mass for $α< 1$. The mass of these modes can be tuned by varying the relative strength of the kinetic and pairing terms in the Hamiltonian. Interestingly, for the Ising chain a similar edge localization appears for the first and second excited states on the paramagnetic side of the phase diagram, where edge modes are not expected. We argue that, at least for the fermionic chains, these massive states correspond to the appearance of new phases, notably approached via quantum phase transitions without mass gap closure. Finally, we discuss the possibility to detect some of these effects in experiments with cold trapped ions.

Bound states and expansion dynamics of interacting bosons on a one-dimensional lattice

The expansion dynamics of bosonic gases in optical lattices has recently been the focus of increasing attention, both experimental and theoretical. We consider, by means of numerical Bethe ansatz, the expansion dynamics of initially confined wave packets of two interacting bosons on a lattice. We show that a correspondence between the asymptotic expansion velocities and the projection of the evolved wave function over the bound states of the system exists, clarifying the existing picture for such situations. Moreover, we investigate the role of the lattice in this kind of evolution.

Dynamics of entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum crossing a quantum phase transition

We study the time evolution of entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum in a finite-size system which crosses a quantum phase transition at different speeds. We focus on the Ising model with a time-dependent magnetic field, which is linearly tuned on a time scale $τ$ . The time evolution of the entanglement entropy displays different regimes depending on the value of $τ$, showing also oscillations which depend on the instantaneous energy spectrum. The entanglement spectrum is characterized by a rich dynamics where multiple crossings take place with a gap-dependent frequency. Moreover, we investigate the Kibble-Zurek scaling of entanglement entropy and Schmidt gap.

Kitaev chains with long-range pairing

We propose and analyze a generalization of the Kitaev chain for fermions with long-range $p$-wave pairing, which decays with distance as a power-law with exponent $α$. Using the integrability of the model, we demonstrate the existence of two types of gapped regimes, where correlation functions decay exponentially at short range and algebraically at long range ($α> 1$) or purely algebraically ($α< 1$). Most interestingly, along the critical lines, long-range pairing is found to break conformal symmetry for sufficiently small $α$. This is accompanied by a violation of the area law for the entanglement entropy in large parts of the phase diagram in the presence of a gap, and can be detected via the dynamics of entanglement following a quench. Some of these features may be relevant for current experiments with cold atomic ions.

RSOS Quantum Chains Associated with Off-Critical Minimal Models and $\mathbb{Z}_n$ Parafermions

We consider the $φ_{1,3}$ off-critical perturbation ${\cal M}(m,m';t)$ of the general non-unitary minimal models where $2\le m\le m'$ and $m, m'$ are coprime and $t$ measures the departure from criticality corresponding to the $φ_{1,3}$ integrable perturbation. We view these models as the continuum scaling limit in the ferromagnetic Regime III of the Forrester-Baxter Restricted Solid-On-Solid (RSOS) models on the square lattice. We also consider the RSOS models in the antiferromagnetic Regime II related in the continuum scaling limit to $\mathbb{Z}_n$ parfermions with $n=m'-2$. Using an elliptic Yang-Baxter algebra of planar tiles encoding the allowed face configurations, we obtain the Hamiltonians of the associated quantum chains defined as the logarithmic derivative of the transfer matrices with periodic boundary conditions. The transfer matrices and Hamiltonians act on a vector space of paths on the $A_{m'-1}$ Dynkin diagram whose dimension is counted by generalized Fibonacci numbers.

Modular invariance in the gapped XYZ spin 1/2 chain

We show that the elliptic parametrization of the coupling constants of the quantum XYZ spin chain can be analytically extended outside of their natural domain, to cover the whole phase diagram of the model, which is composed of 12 adjacent regions, related to one another by a spin rotation. This extension is based on the modular properties of the elliptic functions and we show how rotations in parameter space correspond to the double covering PGL(2,Z)of the modular group, implying that the partition function of the XYZ chain is invariant under this group in parameter space, in the same way as a Conformal Field Theory partition function is invariant under the modular group acting in real space. The encoding of the symmetries of the model into the modular properties of the partition function could shed light on the general structure of integrable models.

Symmetric logarithmic derivative for general n-level systems and the quantum Fisher information tensor for three-level systems

Within a geometrical context, we derive an explicit formula for the computation of the symmetric logarithmic derivative for arbitrarily mixed quantum systems, provided that the structure constants of the associated unitary Lie algebra are known. To give examples of this procedure, we first recover the known formulae for two-level mixed and three-level pure state systems and then apply it to the novel case of U(3), that is for arbitrarily mixed three-level systems (q-trits). Exploiting the latter result, we finally calculate an expression for the Fisher tensor for a q-trit considering also all possible degenerate subcases.

Correlation Length and Unusual Corrections to the Entanglement Entropy

We study analytically the corrections to the leading terms in the Renyi entropy of a massive lattice theory, showing significant deviations from naive expectations. In particular, we show that finite size and finite mass effects give rise to different contributions (with different exponents) and thus violate a simple scaling argument. In the specific, we look at the entanglement entropy of a bipartite XYZ spin-1/2 chain in its ground state. When the system is divided into two semi-infinite half-chains, we have an analytical expression of the Renyi entropy as a function of a single mass parameter. In the scaling limit, we show that the entropy as a function of the correlation length formally coincides with that of a bulk Ising model. This should be compared with the fact that, at criticality, the model is described by a c=1 Conformal Field Theory and the corrections to the entropy due to finite size effects show exponents depending on the compactification radius of the theory. We will argue that there is no contradiction between these statements. If the lattice spacing is retained finite, the relation between the mass parameter and the correlation length generates new subleading terms in the entropy, whose form is path-dependent in phase-space and whose interpretation within a field theory is not available yet. These contributions arise as a consequence of the existence of stable bound states and are thus a distinctive feature of truly interacting theories, such as the XYZ chain.

Critical properties and Rényi entropies of the spin-3/2 XXZ chain

We discuss entanglement and critical properties of the spin-3/2 XXZ chain in its entire gapless region. Employing density-matrix renormalization group calculations combined with different methods based on level spectroscopy, correlation functions and entanglement entropies, we determine the sound velocity and the Luttinger parameter of the model as a function of the anisotropy parameter. Then, we focus on entanglement properties by systematically studying the behavior of Rényi entropies under both open and periodic boundary conditions, providing further evidence of recent findings about entanglement entropies of excited states in conformal field theory.

Exact entanglement entropy of the XYZ model and its sine-Gordon limit

We obtain the exact expression for the Von Neumann entropy for an infinite bipartition of the XYZ model, by connecting its reduced density matrix to the corner transfer matrix of the eight vertex model. Then we consider the anisotropic scaling limit of the XYZ chain that yields the 1+1 dimensional sine-Gordon model. We present the formula for the entanglement entropy of the latter, which has the structure of a dominant logarithmic term plus a constant, in agreement with what is generally expected for a massive quantum field theory.

Essential singularity in the Renyi entanglement entropy of the one-dimensional XYZ spin-1/2 chain

We study the Renyi entropy of the one-dimensional XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the entirety of its phase diagram. The model has several quantum critical lines corresponding to rotated XXZ chains in their paramagnetic phase, and four tri-critical points where these phases join. Two of these points are described by a conformal field theory and close to them the entropy scales as the logarithm of its mass gap. The other two points are not conformal and the entropy has a peculiar singular behavior in their neighbors, characteristic of an essential singularity. At these non-conformal points the model undergoes a discontinuous transition, with a level crossing in the ground state and a quadratic excitation spectrum. We propose the entropy as an efficient tool to determine the discontinuous or continuous nature of a phase transition also in more complicated models.

From the Equations of Motion to the Canonical Commutation Relations

The problem of whether or not the equations of motion of a quantum system determine the commutation relations was posed by E.P.Wigner in 1950. A similar problem (known as "The Inverse Problem in the Calculus of Variations") was posed in a classical setting as back as in 1887 by H.Helmoltz and has received great attention also in recent times. The aim of this paper is to discuss how these two apparently unrelated problems can actually be discussed in a somewhat unified framework. After reviewing briefly the Inverse Problem and the existence of alternative structures for classical systems, we discuss the geometric structures that are intrinsically present in Quantum Mechanics, starting from finite-level systems and then moving to a more general setting by using the Weyl-Wigner approach, showing how this approach can accomodate in an almost natural way the existence of alternative structures in Quantum Mechanics as well.

Integer-spin Heisenberg Chains in a Staggered Magnetic Field. A Nonlinear $σ$-Model Approach

We present here a nonlinear sigma-model (NL$σ$M) study of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered magnetic field. We find, already at the mean-field level, excellent agreement with recent and very accurate Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) studies, and that up to the highest values of the field for which a comparison is possible, for the staggered magnetization and the transverse spin gap. Qualitative but not quantitative agreement is found between the NL$σ$M predictions for the longitudinal spin gap and the DMRG results. The origin of the discrepancies is traced and discussed. Our results allow for extensions to higher-spin chains that have not yet been studied numerically, and the predictions for a spin-2 chain are presented and discussed. Comparison is also made with previous theoretical approaches that led instead to predictions in disagreement with the DMRG results.
