A nonlocal supercritical Neumann problem

We establish existence of positive non-decreasing radial solutions for a nonlocal nonlinear Neumann problem both in the ball and in the annulus. The nonlinearity that we consider is rather general, allowing for supercritical growth (in the sense of Sobolev embedding). The consequent lack of compactness can be overcome, by working in the cone of non-negative and non-decreasing radial functions. Within this cone, we establish some a priori estimates which allow, via a truncation argument, to use variational methods for proving existence of solutions. As a side result, we prove a strong maximum principle for nonlocal Neumann problems, which is of independent interest.

Sharp quantitative stability for isoperimetric inequalities with homogeneous weights

We prove the sharp quantitative stability for a wide class of weighted isoperimetric inequalities. More precisely, we consider isoperimetric inequalities in convex cones with homogeneous weights. Inspired by the proof of such isoperimetric inequalities through the ABP method, we construct a new convex coupling (i.e., a map that is the gradient of a convex function) between a generic set $E$ and the minimizer of the inequality (as in Gromov's proof of the isoperimetric inequality). Even if this map does not come from optimal transport, and even if there is a weight in the inequality, we adapt the methods of Figalli-Maggi-Pratelli and prove that if $E$ is almost optimal for the inequality then it is quantitatively close to a minimizer up to translations. Then, a delicate analysis is necessary to rule out the possibility of translations. As a step of our proof, we establish a sharp regularity result for restricted convex envelopes of a function that might be of independent interest.

$Γ$-convergence of variational functionals with boundary terms in Stein manifolds

Let $Ω$ be an open subset of a Stein manifold $Σ$ and let $M$ be its boundary. It is well known that $M$ inherits a natural contact structure. In this paper we consider a family of variational functionals $F_\varepsilon$ defined by the sum of two terms: a Dirichlet-type energy associated with a sub-Riemannian structure in $Ω$ and a potential term on the boundary $M$. We prove that the functionals $F_\varepsilon$ $Γ$-converge to the intrinsic perimeter in $M$ associated with its contact structure. Similar results have been obtained in the Euclidean space by Alberti, Bouchitté, Seppecher. We stress that already in the Euclidean setting the situation is not covered by the classical Modica-Mortola Theorem because of the presence of the boundary term. We recall also that Modica-Mortola type results (without a boundary term) have been proved in the Euclidean space for sub-Riemannian energies by Monti and Serra Cassano.

Neckpinch singularities in fractional mean curvature flows

In this paper we consider the evolution of sets by a fractional mean curvature flow. Our main result states that for any dimension $n > 2$, there exists an embedded surface in $\mathbb R^n$ evolving by fractional mean curvature flow, which developes a singularity before it can shrink to a point. When $n > 3$ this result generalizes the analogue result of Grayson for the classical mean curvature flow. Interestingly, when $n = 2$, our result provides instead a counterexample in the nonlocal framework to the well known Grayson Theorem, which states that any smooth embedded curve in the plane evolving by (classical) MCF shrinks to a point.

Quantitative flatness results and $BV$-estimates for stable nonlocal minimal surfaces

We establish quantitative properties of minimizers and stable sets for nonlocal interaction functionals, including the $s$-fractional perimeter as a particular case. On the one hand, we establish universal $BV$-estimates in every dimension $n\ge 2$ for stable sets. Namely, we prove that any stable set in $B_1$ has finite classical perimeter in $B_{1/2}$, with a universal bound. This nonlocal result is new even in the case of $s$-perimeters and its local counterpart (for classical stable minimal surfaces) was known only for simply connected two-dimensional surfaces immersed in $\mathbb R^3$. On the other hand, we prove quantitative flatness estimates for minimizers and stable sets in low dimensions $n=2,3$. More precisely, we show that a stable set in $B_R$, with $R$ large, is very close in measure to being a half space in $B_1$ ---with a quantitative estimate on the measure of the symmetric difference. As a byproduct, we obtain new classification results for stable sets in the whole plane.

A nonlinear Liouville theorem for fractional equations in the Heisenberg group

We establish a Liouville-type theorem for a subcritical nonlinear problem, involving a fractional power of the sub-Laplacian in the Heisenberg group. To prove our result we will use the local realization of fractional CR covariant operators, which can be constructed as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of a degenerate elliptic equation in the spirit of Caffarelli and Silvestre, as established in \cite{FGMT}. The main tools in our proof are the CR inversion and the moving plane method, applied to the solution of the lifted problem in the half-space $\mathbb H^n\times \mathbbR^+$.

Interpolation inequalities in pattern formation

We prove some interpolation inequalities which arise in the analysis of pattern formation in physics. They are the strong version of some already known estimates in weak form that are used to give a lower bound of the energy in many contexts (coarsening and branching in micromagnetics and superconductors). The main ingredient in the proof of our inequalities is a geometric construction which was first used by Choksi, Conti, Kohn, and one of the authors in the study of branching in superconductors.

Sharp energy estimates for nonlinear fractional diffusion equations

We study the nonlinear fractional equation $(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, for all fractions $0<s<1$ and all nonlinearities $f$. For every fractional power $s \in (0,1)$, we obtain sharp energy estimates for bounded global minimizers and for bounded monotone solutions. They are sharp since they are optimal for solutions depending only on one Euclidian variable. As a consequence, we deduce the one-dimensional symmetry of bounded global minimizers and of bounded monotone solutions in dimension $n=3$ whenever $1/2 \leq s < 1$. This result is the analogue of a conjecture of De Giorgi on one-dimensional symmetry for the classical equation $-Δu = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It remains open for $n=3$ and $s<1/2$, and also for $n \geq 4$ and all $s$.

The $ε-ε^β$ property, the boundedness of isoperimetric sets in $\R^N$ with density, and some applications

We show that every isoperimetric set in R^N with density is bounded if the density is continuous and bounded by above and below. This improves the previously known boundedness results, which basically needed a Lipschitz assumption; on the other hand, the present assumption is sharp, as we show with an explicit example. To obtain our result, we observe that the main tool which is often used, namely a classical "ε-ε" property already discussed by Allard, Almgren and Bombieri, admits a weaker counterpart which is still sufficient for the boundedness, namely, an "ε-ε^β" version of the property. And in turn, while for the validity of the first property the Lipschitz assumption is essential, for the latter the sole continuity is enough. We conclude by deriving some consequences of our result about the existence and regularity of isoperimetric sets.

Saddle-shaped solutions of bistable elliptic equations involving the half-Laplacian

We establish existence and qualitative properties of saddle-shaped solutions of the elliptic fractional equation $(-Δ)^{1/2}u=f(u)$ in all the space $\re^{2m}$, where $f$ is of bistable type. These solutions are odd with respect to the Simons cone and even with respect to each coordinate. More precisely, we prove the existence of a saddle-shaped solution in every even dimension $2m$, as well as its monotonicity properties, asymptotic behaviour, and instability in dimensions $2m=4$ and $2m=6$. These results are relevant in connection with the analog for fractional equations of a conjecture of De Giorgi on the 1-D symmetry of certain solutions. Saddle-shaped solutions are the simplest candidates, besides 1-D solutions, to be global minimizers in high dimensions, a property not yet established.

Energy estimates and 1-D symmetry for nonlinear equations involving the half-Laplacian

We establish sharp energy estimates for some solutions, such as global minimizers, monotone solutions and saddle-shaped solutions, of the fractional nonlinear equation $(-Δ)^{1/2} u=f(u)$ in $\re^n$. Our energy estimates hold for every nonlinearity $f$ and are sharp since they are optimal for one-dimensional solutions, that is, for solutions depending only on one Euclidian variable. As a consequence, in dimension $n=3$, we deduce the one-dimensional symmetry of every global minimizer and of every monotone solution. This result is the analog of a conjecture of De Giorgi on one-dimensional symmetry for the classical equation $-Δu=f(u)$ in $\re^n$.
