Superpotential of Three Dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ Heterotic Supergravity

We dimensionally reduce the ten dimensional heterotic action on spacetimes of the form ${\cal M}_{(2,1)}\times Y$, where ${\cal M}_{(2,1)}$ is three dimensional maximally symmetric Anti de Sitter or Minkowski space, and $Y$ is a compact seven dimensional manifold with $G_2$ structure. In doing so, we derive the real superpotential functional of the corresponding three dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ theory. We confirm that extrema of this functional precisely correspond to supersymmetric heterotic compactifications on manifolds of $G_2$ structure. We make some comments on the role of the superpotential functional with respect to the coupled moduli problem of instanton bundles over $G_2$ manifolds.

Mabuchi spectrum from the minisuperspace

It was recently shown that other functionals contribute to the effective action for the Liouville field when considering massive matter coupled to two-dimensional gravity in the conformal gauge. The most important of these new contributions corresponds to the Mabuchi functional. We propose a minisuperspace action that reproduces the main features of the Mabuchi action in order to describe the dynamics of the zero-mode. We show that the associated Hamiltonian coincides with the (quantum mechanical) Liouville Hamiltonian. As a consequence the Liouville theory and our model of the Mabuchi theory both share the same spectrum, eigenfunctions and - in this approximation - correlation functions.

Exploring SU(3) Structure Moduli Spaces with Integrable G2 Structures

We study the moduli space of SU(3) structure manifolds X that form the internal compact spaces in four-dimensional N=1/2 domain wall solutions of heterotic supergravity with flux. Together with the direction perpendicular to the four-dimensional domain wall, X forms a non-compact 7-manifold Y with torsionful G2 structure. We use this G2 embedding to explore how X(t) varies along paths C(t) in the SU(3) structure moduli space. Our analysis includes the Bianchi identities which strongly constrain the flow. We show that requiring that the SU(3) structure torsion is preserved along the path leads to constraints on the G2 torsion and the embedding of X in Y. Furthermore, we study flows along which the torsion classes of X go from zero to non-zero values. In particular, we present evidence that the flow of half-flat SU(3) structures may contain Calabi-Yau loci, in the presence of non-vanishing H-flux.

Holomorphic Bundles and the Moduli Space of N=1 Supersymmetric Heterotic Compactifications

We describe the first order moduli space of heterotic string theory compactifications which preserve $N=1$ supersymmetry in four dimensions, that is, the infinitesimal parameter space of the Strominger system. We establish that if we promote a connection on $TX$ to a field, the moduli space corresponds to deformations of a holomorphic structure $\bar D$ on a bundle $\cal Q$. The bundle $\cal Q$ is constructed as an extension by the cotangent bundle $T^*X$ of the bundle $E= {\rm End}(V) \oplus {\rm End}(TX) \oplus TX$ with an extension class $\cal H$ which precisely enforces the anomaly cancelation condition. The deformations corresponding to the bundle $E$ are simultaneous deformations of the holomorphic structures on the poly-stable bundles $V$ and $TX$ together with those of the complex structure of $X$. We discuss the fact that the "moduli" corresponding to ${\rm End}(TX)$ cannot be physical, but are however needed in our mathematical structure to be able to enforce the anomaly cancelation condition. In the Appendix we comment on the choice of connection on $TX$ which has caused some confusion in the community before. It has been shown by Ivanov and others that this connection should also satisfy the instanton equations, and we give another proof of this fact.

Moduli Stabilising in Heterotic Nearly Kähler Compactifications

We study heterotic string compactifications on nearly Kähler homogeneous spaces, including the gauge field effects which arise at order α'. Using Abelian gauge fields, we are able to solve the Bianchi identity and supersymmetry conditions to this order. The four-dimensional external space-time consists of a domain wall solution with moduli fields varying along the transverse direction. We find that the inclusion of α' corrections improves the moduli stabilization features of this solution. In this case, one of the dilaton and the volume modulus asymptotes to a constant value away from the domain wall. It is further shown that the inclusion of non-perturbative effects can stabilize the remaining modulus and "lift" the domain wall to an AdS vacuum. The coset SU(3)/U(1)^2 is used as an explicit example to demonstrate the validity of this AdS vacuum. Our results show that heterotic nearly Kähler compactifications can lead to maximally symmetric four-dimensional space-times at the non-perturbative level.

Functional renormalization group at finite density and Bose condensation

We discuss the functional renormalization group and pion condensation in the presence of a finite isospin chemical potential $μ_I$. We calculate the phase diagram as function of temperature $T$ and $μ_I$. While the exact effective average action is invariant under certain gauge transformations, the effective action in the local-potential approximation is not. As a consequence, the critical chemical potential $μ_I^c$ for Bose-Einstein condensation at T=0 is no longer equal to the mass of the condensing mode. We discuss possible solutions to this problem.
