Dynamic Effective Medium Theory for Two-Dimensional Non-Magnetic Metamaterial Lattices using Multipole Expansion

We present a formulation for deriving effective medium properties of infinitely periodic two-dimensional metamaterial lattice structures beyond the static and quasi-static limits. We utilize the multipole expansions, where the polarization currents associated with the supported Bloch modes are expressed via the electric dipole, magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole moments per unit length. We then propose a method to calculate the Bloch modes based on the lattice geometry and individual unit element structure. The results revert to well-known formulas in the quasistatic limit and are useful for the homogenization of nanorod-type metamaterials which are frequently used in optical applications.

Dispersive Cylindrical Cloaks under Non-Monochromatic Illumination

Transformation-based cylindrical cloaks and concentrators are illuminated with non-monochromatic waves and unusual effects are observed with interesting potential applications. The transient responses of the devices are studied numerically with the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method and the results are verified with analytical formulas. We compute the effective bandwidth of several cloaking schemes as well as the effect of losses on the performance of the structures. We also find that narrowband behavior, frequency shift effects, time delays and spatial disturbances of the incoming waves are dominant due to the inherently dispersive nature of the devices. These effects are important and should be taken into account when designing metamaterial-based devices.

Manipulating the Loss in Electromagnetic Cloaks for Perfect Wave Absorption

We examine several ways to manipulate the loss in electromagnetic cloaks, based on transformation electromagnetics. It is found that, by utilizing inherent electric and magnetic losses of metamaterials, perfect wave absorption can be achieved based on several popular designs of electromagnetic cloaks. A practical implementation of the absorber, consisting of ten discrete layers of metamaterials, is proposed. The new devices demonstrate super-absorptivity over a moderate wideband range, suitable for both microwave and optical applications. It is corroborated that the device is functional with a subwavelength thickness and, hence, advantageous compared to the conventional absorbers.
