The isomorphism problem for Schubert varieties

Schubert varieties in the full flag variety of Kac-Moody type are indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group. We give a practical criterion for when two such Schubert varieties (from potentially different flag varieties) are isomorphic, in terms of the Cartan matrix and reduced words for the indexing Weyl group elements. As a corollary, we show that two such Schubert varieties are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between their integral cohomology rings that preserves the Schubert basis.

The parabolic coset structure of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups

In this paper, we study the decomposition of Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group with respect to cosets of a parabolic subgroup. Our main result is that the intersection of a lower Bruhat interval with a parabolic coset contains a unique maximal element. As an application, we give a decomposition formula for the Poincaré polynomial of a Coxeter group element. We also show that the fibers of standard parabolic projection maps on Schubert varieties are themselves Schubert varieties.

An equivariant basis for the cohomology of Springer fibers

Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in combinatorics and geometric representation theory. In this paper, we analyze the equivariant cohomology of Springer fibers for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ using results of Kumar and Procesi that describe this equivariant cohomology as a quotient ring. We define a basis for the equivariant cohomology of a Springer fiber, generalizing a monomial basis of the ordinary cohomology defined by De Concini and Procesi and studied by Garsia and Procesi. Our construction yields a combinatorial framework with which to study the equivariant and ordinary cohomology rings of Springer fibers. As an application, we identify an explicit collection of (equivariant) Schubert classes whose images in the (equivariant) cohomology ring of a given Springer fiber form a basis.

Eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices and equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians

The saturation theorem of [Knutson-Tao '99] concerns the nonvanishing of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In combination with work of [Klyachko '98], it implies [Horn '62]'s conjecture about eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices. This eigenvalue problem has a generalization [Friedland '00] to majorized sums of Hermitian matrices. We further illustrate the common features between these two eigenvalue problems and their connection to Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Our main result gives a Schubert calculus interpretation of Friedland's problem, via equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. In particular, we prove a saturation theorem for this setting. Our arguments employ the aformentioned work together with [Thomas-Yong '12].

Rationally smooth elements of Coxeter groups and triangle group avoidance

We study a family of infinite-type Coxeter groups defined by the avoidance of certain rank 3 parabolic subgroups. For this family, rationally smooth elements can be detected by looking at only a few coefficients of the Poincaré polynomial. We also prove a factorization theorem for the Poincaré polynomial of rationally smooth elements. As an application, we show that a large class of infinite-type Coxeter groups have only finitely many rationally smooth elements. Explicit enumerations and descriptions of these elements are given in special cases.

Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for reflection groups

In this paper we explicitly compute all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for semisimple or Kac-Moody groups G, that is, the structure coefficients of the cohomology algebra H^*(G/P), where P is a parabolic subgroup of G. These coefficients are of importance in enumerative geometry, algebraic combinatorics and representation theory. Our formula for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients is given in terms of the Cartan matrix and the Weyl group of G. However, if some off-diagonal entries of the Cartan matrix are 0 or -1, the formula may contain negative summands. On the other hand, if the Cartan matrix satisfies $a_{ij}a_{ji}\ge 4$ for all $i,j$, then each summand in our formula is nonnegative that implies nonnegativity of all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We extend this and other results to the structure coefficients of the T-equivariant cohomology of flag varieties G/P and Bott-Samelson varieties Gamma_\ii(G).

A combinatorial characterization of tight fusion frames

In this paper we give a combinatorial characterization of tight fusion frame (TFF) sequences using Littlewood-Richardson skew tableaux. The equal rank case has been solved recently by Casazza, Fickus, Mixon, Wang, and Zhou. Our characterization does not have this limitation. We also develop some methods for generating TFF sequences. The basic technique is a majorization principle for TFF sequences combined with spatial and Naimark dualities. We use these methods and our characterization to give necessary and sufficient conditions which are satisfied by the first three highest ranks. We also give a combinatorial interpretation of spatial and Naimark dualities in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We exhibit four classes of TFF sequences which have unique maximal elements with respect to majorization partial order. Finally, we give several examples illustrating our techniques including an example of tight fusion frame which can not be constructed by the existing spectral tetris techniques. We end the paper by giving a complete list of maximal TFF sequences in dimensions less than ten.

A multiplicative formula for structure constants in the cohomology of flag varieties

Let G be a complex semi-simple Lie group and let P,Q be a pair of parabolic subgroups of G such that Q contains P. Consider the flag varieties G/P, G/Q and Q/P. We show that certain structure constants in H^*(G/P) with respect to the Schubert basis can be written as a product of structure constants coming from H^*(G/Q) and H^*(Q/P) in a very natural way. The primary application is to compute Levi-movable structure constants defined by Belkale and Kumar. We also give a generalization of this product formula in the branching Schubert calculus setting.

Branching Schubert calculus and the Belkale-Kumar product on cohomology

In 2006, Belkale and Kumar define a new product on the cohomology of flag varieties and use this new product to give an improved solution to the eigencone problem for complex reductive groups. In this paper, we give a generalization of the Belkale-Kumar product to the branching Schubert calculus setting. The study of Branching Schubert calculus attempts to understand the induced map on cohomology of an equivariant embedding of flag varieties. The main application of our work is a compact formulation of the solution to the branching eigencone problem.

A partial Horn recursion in the cohomology of flag varieties

Horn recursion is a term used to describe when non-vanishing products of Schubert classes in the cohomology of complex flag varieties are characterized by inequalities parameterized by similar non-vanishing products in the cohomology of "smaller" flag varieties. We consider the type A partial flag variety and find that its cohomology exhibits a Horn recursion on a certain deformation of the cup product defined by Belkale and Kumar in \cite{BK06}. We also show that if a product of Schubert classes is non-vanishing on this deformation, then the associated structure constant can be written in terms of structure constants coming from induced Grassmannians.
