Riesz energy problems with external fields and related theory

In this paper, we investigate Riesz energy problems on unbounded conductors in $\R^d$ in the presence of general external fields $Q$, not necessarily satisfying the growth condition $Q(x)\to\infty$ as $x\to\infty$ assumed in several previous studies. We provide sufficient conditions on $Q$ for the existence of an equilibrium measure and the compactness of its support. Particular attention is paid to the case of the hyperplanar conductor $\R^{d}$, embedded in $\R^{d+1}$, when the external field is created by the potential of a signed measure $ν$ outside of $\R^{d}$. Simple cases where $ν$ is a discrete measure are analyzed in detail. New theoretic results for Riesz potentials, in particular an extension of a classical theorem by de La Vallée-Poussin, are established. These results are of independent interest.

Random Point Sets on the Sphere --- Hole Radii, Covering, and Separation

Geometric properties of $N$ random points distributed independently and uniformly on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d}\subset\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ with respect to surface area measure are obtained and several related conjectures are posed. In particular, we derive asymptotics (as $N \to \infty$) for the expected moments of the radii of spherical caps associated with the facets of the convex hull of $N$ random points on $\mathbb{S}^{d}$. We provide conjectures for the asymptotic distribution of the scaled radii of these spherical caps and the expected value of the largest of these radii (the covering radius). Numerical evidence is included to support these conjectures. Furthermore, utilizing the extreme law for pairwise angles of Cai et al., we derive precise asymptotics for the expected separation of random points on $\mathbb{S}^{d}$.

Relative Asymptotics of Orthogonal Polynomials for Perturbed Measures

In the context of orthogonal polynomials in the plane we introduce the notion of a polynomially small (PS) perturbation of a measure. In such a case we establish relative asymptotic results for the two sequences of the associated orthonormal polynomials. We also provide results dealing with the behaviour of the zeros of PS perturbations of area orthogonal (Bergman) polynomials.

Next order energy asymptotics for Riesz potentials on flat tori

Let $Λ$ be a lattice in ${\bf R}^d$ with positive co-volume. Among $Λ$-periodic $N$-point configurations, we consider the minimal renormalized Riesz $s$-energy $\mathcal{E}_{s,Λ}(N)$. While the dominant term in the asymptotic expansion of $\mathcal{E}_{s,Λ}(N)$ as $N$ goes to infinity in the long range case that $0<s<d$ (or $s=\log$) can be obtained from classical potential theory, the next order term(s) require a different approach. Here we derive the form of the next order term or terms, namely for $s>0$ they are of the form $C_{s,d}|Λ|^{-s/d}N^{1+s/d}$ and $-\frac{2}{d}N\log N+\left(C_{\log,d}-2ζ'_Λ(0)\right)N$ where we show that the constant $C_{s,d}$ is independent of the lattice $Λ$.

An Electrostatics Problem on the Sphere Arising from a Nearby Point Charge

For a positively charged insulated d-dimensional sphere we investigate how the distribution of this charge is affected by proximity to a nearby positive or negative point charge when the system is governed by a Riesz s-potential 1/r^s, s>0, where r denotes Euclidean distance between point charges. Of particular interest are those distances from the point charge to the sphere for which the equilibrium charge distribution is no longer supported on the whole of the sphere (i.e. spherical caps of negative charge appear). Arising from this problem attributed to A. A. Gonchar are sequences of polynomials of a complex variable that have some fascinating properties regarding their zeros.

On the zeros of asymptotically extremal polynomial sequences in the plane

Let $E$ be a compact set of positive logarithmic capacity in the complex plane and let $\{P_n(z)\}_{1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of asymptotically extremal monic polynomials for $E$ in the sense that \begin{equation*}%\label{} \limsup_{n\to\infty}\|P_n\|_E^{1/n}\le\mathrm{cap}(E). \end{equation*} The purpose of this note is to provide sufficient geometric conditions on $E$ under which the (full) sequence of normalized counting measures of the zeros of $\{P_n\}$ converges in the weak-star topology to the equilibrium measure on $E$, as $n\to\infty.$ Utilizing an argument of Gardiner and Pommerenke dealing with the balayage of measures, we show that this is true, for example, if the interior of the polynomial convex hull of $E$ has a single component and the boundary of this component has an "inward corner" (more generally, a "non-convex singularity"). This simple fact has thus far not been sufficiently emphasized in the literature. As applications we mention improvements of some known results on the distribution of zeros of some special polynomial sequences.

Inverse Bernstein inequalities and min-max-min problems on the unit circle

We give a short and elementary proof of an inverse Bernstein-type inequality found by S. Khrushchev for the derivative of a polynomial having all its zeros on the unit circle. The inequality is used to show that equally-spaced points solve a min-max-min problem for the logarithmic potential of such polynomials. Using techniques recently developed for polarization (Chebyshev-type) problems, we show that this optimality also holds for a large class of potentials, including the Riesz potentials $1/r^s$ with $s>0.$

Riesz Polarization Inequalities in Higher Dimensions

We derive bounds and asymptotics for the maximum Riesz polarization quantity $$M_n^p(A) := \max_{{\bold x}_1, {\bold x}_2, \ldots, {\bold x}_n \in A} {\min_{{\bold x} \in A}{\sum_{j=1}^n{\frac{1}{|{\bold x} - {\bold x}_j|^{p}}}}}$$ (which is $n$ times the Chebyshev constant) for quite general sets $A \subset {\Bbb R}^m$ with special focus on the unit sphere and unit ball. We combine elementary averaging arguments with potential theoretic tools to formulate and prove our results. We also give a discrete version of the recent result of Hardin, Kendall, and Saff which solves the Riesz polarization problem for the case when $A$ is the unit circle and $p>0,$ as well as provide an independent proof of their result for $p=4$ that exploits classical polynomial inequalities and yields new estimates. Furthermore, we raise some challenging conjectures.

Asymptotics for Hessenberg matrices for the Bergman shift operator on Jordan regions

Let G be a bounded Jordan domain in the complex plane and consider the infinite upper Hessenberg matrix M associated with the Bergman orthogonal polynomials of G. This matrix represents the Bergman shift operator of G. The main purpose of the paper is to describe and analyze a close relation between M and the Toeplitz matrix with symbol the normalized conformal map of the exterior of the unit circle onto the complement of the closure of G. Our results are based on the strong asymptotics of the Bergman polynomials. As an application, we describe and analyze an algorithm for recovering the shape of G from its area moments.

Borcea's variance conjectures on the critical points of polynomials

Closely following recent ideas of J. Borcea, we discuss various modifications and relaxations of Sendov's conjecture about the location of critical points of a polynomial with complex coefficients. The resulting open problems are formulated in terms of matrix theory, mathematical statistics or potential theory. Quite a few links between classical works in the geometry of polynomials and recent advances in the location of spectra of small rank perturbations of structured matrices are established. A couple of simple examples provide natural and sometimes sharp bounds for the proposed conjectures.
