Lagrangian skeleta, collars and duality

We present a geometric realization of the duality between skeleta in T∗PnT^*\mathbb P^n and collars of local surfaces. Such duality is predicted by combining two auxiliary types of duality: on one side, symplectic duality between T∗PnT^*\mathbb P^n and a crepant resolution of the AnA_n singularity; on the other side, toric duality between two types of isolated quotient singularities. We give a correspondence between Lagrangian submanifolds of the cotangent bundle and vector bundles on collars, and describe those birational transformations within the skeleton which are dual to deformations of vector bundles.

Surfaces in the flag threefold containing smooth conics and twistor fibers

We study smooth integral curves of bidegree (1,1)(1,1), called \textit{smooth conics}, in the flag threefold F\mathbb{F}. The study is motivated by the fact that the family of smooth conics contains the set of fibers of the twistor projection F→CP2\mathbb{F}\to\mathbb{CP}^{2}. We give a bound on the maximum number of smooth conics contained in a smooth surface S⊂FS\subset\mathbb{F}. Then, we show qualitative properties of algebraic surfaces containing a prescribed number of smooth conics. Lastly, we study surfaces containing infinitely many twistor fibers. We show that the only smooth cases are surfaces of bidegree (1,1)(1,1). Then, for any integer a>1a>1, we exhibit a method to construct an integral surface of bidegree (a,a)(a,a) containing infinitely many twistor fibers.

Twistor geometry of the Flag manifold

A study is made of algebraic curves and surfaces in the flag manifold F=SU(3)/T2\mathbb{F}=SU(3)/T^2, and their configuration relative to the twistor projection ππ from F\mathbb{F} to the complex projective plane CP2\mathbb{CP}^2, defined with the help of an anti-holomorphic involution jj. This is motivated by analogous studies of algebraic surfaces of low degree in the twistor space CP3\mathbb{CP}^3 of S4S^4. Deformations of twistor fibres project to real surfaces in CP2\mathbb{CP}^2, whose metric geometry is investigated. Attention is then focussed on toric Del Pezzo surfaces that are the simplest type of surfaces in F\mathbb{F} of bidegree (1,1)(1,1). These surfaces define orthogonal complex structures on specified dense open subsets of CP2\mathbb{CP}^2 relative to its Fubini-Study metric. The discriminant loci of various surfaces of bidegree (1,1)(1,1) are determined, and bounds given on the number of twistor fibres that are contained in more general algebraic surfaces in F\mathbb{F}.

20 open questions about deformations of compactifiable manifolds

Deformation theory of complex manifolds is a classical subject with recent new advances in the noncompact case using both algebraic and analytic methods. In this note, we recall some concepts of the existing theory and introduce new notions of deformations for manifolds with boundary, for compactifiable manifolds, and for qq-concave spaces. We highlight some of the possible applications and give a list of open questions which we intend as a guide for further research in this rich and beautiful subject.

Extending infinitely many times arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces

We give examples of infinitely extendable (not as cones) arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces and which are not complete intersections. The proof uses the computation of the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of codimension 22 subschemes of projective spaces due to G. Ellingsrud and of arithmetically Gorenstein codimension 33 subschemes due to J. O. Kleppe and R.-M. Miró-Roig.

Steiner Configurations ideals: containment and colouring

Given a homogeneous ideal I⊆k[x0,…,xn]I \subseteq k[x_0,\dots,x_n], the Containment problem studies the relation between symbolic and regular powers of II, that is, it asks for which pair m,r∈Nm, r \in \mathbb{N}, I(m)⊆IrI^{(m)} \subseteq I^r holds. In the last years, several conjectures have been posed on this problem, creating an active area of current interests and ongoing investigations. In this paper, we investigated the Stable Harbourne Conjecture and the Stable Harbourne -- Huneke Conjecture and we show that they hold for the defining ideal of a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points in Pkn\mathbb{P}^{n}_{k}. We can also show that the ideal of a Complement of a Steiner Configuration of points has expected resurgence, that is, its resurgence is strictly less than its big height, and it also satisfies Chudnovsky and Demailly's Conjectures. Moreover, given a hypergraph HH, we also study the relation between its colourability and the failure of the containment problem for the cover ideal associated to HH. We apply these results in the case that HH is a Steiner System.

Strength and slice rank of forms are generically equal

We prove that strength and slice rank of homogeneous polynomials of degree d≥5d \geq 5 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero coincide generically. To show this, we establish a conjecture of Catalisano, Geramita, Gimigliano, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel and Shin concerning dimensions of secant varieties of the varieties of reducible homogeneous polynomials. These statements were already known in degrees 2≤d≤72\leq d\leq 7 and d=9d=9.

preprint2021arXiv

The set of forms with bounded strength is not closed

The strength of a homogeneous polynomial (or form) is the smallest length of an additive decomposition expressing it whose summands are reducible forms. Using polynomial functors, we show that the set of forms with bounded strength is not always Zariski-closed. More specifically, if the ground field is algebraically closed, we prove that the set of quartics with strength ≤3\leq3 is not Zariski-closed for a large number of variables.

Geometric conditions for strict submultiplicativity of rank and border rank

The XX-rank of a point pp in projective space is the minimal number of points of an algebraic variety XX whose linear span contains pp. This notion is naturally submultiplicative under tensor product. We study geometric conditions that guarantee strict submultiplicativity. We prove that in the case of points of rank two, strict submultiplicativity is entirely characterized in terms of the trisecant lines to the variety. Moreover, we focus on the case of curves: we prove that for curves embedded in an even-dimensional projective space, there are always points for which strict submultiplicativity occurs, with the only exception of rational normal curves.

Linear dependent subsets of Segre varieties

We study the linear algebra of finite subsets SS of a Segre variety XX. In particular we classify the pairs (S,X)(S,X) with SS linear dependent and #(S)≤5\#(S)\le 5. We consider an additional condition for linear dependent sets (no two of their points are contained in a line of XX) and get far better lower bounds for #(S)\#(S) in term of the dimension and number of the factors of XX. In this discussion and in the classification of the case #(S)=5\#(S)= 5, X≅P1×P1×P1X\cong \mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1 we use the rational normal curves

On the Hilbert function of general unions of curves in projective spaces

Let X=X1∪⋯∪Xs⊂PnX=X_1\cup \cdots \cup X_s\subset \mathbb {P}^n, n≥4n\ge 4, be a general union of smooth non-special curves with XiX_i of degree did_i and genus gig_i and di≥max⁡{2gi−1,gi+n}d_i\ge \max \{2g_i-1,g_i+n\} if gi>0g_i>0. We prove that XX has maximal rank, i.e. for any t∈Nt\in \mathbb {N} either h0(IX(t))=0h^0(\mathcal{I}_X(t))=0 or h1(IX(t))=0h^1(\mathcal{I}_X(t))=0.

On the Hilbert function of intersections of a hypersurface with general reducible curves

Let W⊂PnW\subset \mathbb {P}^n, n≥3n\ge 3, be a degree kk hypersurface. Consider a "general" reducible, but connected, curve Y⊂PnY\subset \mathbb {P}^n, for instance a sufficiently general connected and nodal union of lines with pa(Y)=0p_a(Y)=0, i.e. a tree of lines. We study the Hilbert function of the set Y∩WY\cap W with cardinality k°(Y)k°(Y) and prove when it is the expected one. We give complete classification of the exceptions for k=2k=2 and for n=k=3n=k=3. We apply these results and tools to the case in which YY is a smooth curve with OY(1)\mathcal {O}_Y(1) non-special.

Steiner systems and configurations of points

The aim of this paper is to make a connection between design theory and algebraic geometry/commutative algebra. In particular, given any Steiner System S(t,n,v)S(t,n,v) we associate two ideals, in a suitable polynomial ring, defining a Steiner configuration of points and its Complement. We focus on the latter, studying its homological invariants, such as Hilbert Function and Betti numbers. We also study symbolic and regular powers associated to the ideal defining a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points, finding its Waldschmidt constant, regularity, bounds on its resurgence and asymptotic resurgence. We also compute the parameters of linear codes associated to any Steiner configuration of points and its Complement.

The strength for line bundles

We introduce the strength for sections of a line bundle on an algebraic variety. This generalizes the strength of homogeneous polynomials that has been recently introduced to resolve Stillman's conjecture, an important problem in commutative algebra. We establish the first properties of this notion and give some tool to obtain upper bounds on the strength in this framework. Moreover, we show some results on the usual strength such as the reducibility of the set of strength two homogeneous polynomials.

Compactifications of Adjoint Orbits and their Hodge Diamonds

A recent theorem of [GGSM1] showed that adjoint orbits of semisimple Lie algebras have the structure of symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. We investigate the behaviour of their fibrewise compactifications. Expressing adjoint orbits and fibres as affine varieties in their Lie algebra, we compactify them to projective varieties via homogenisation of the defining ideals. We find that their Hodge diamonds vary wildly according to the choice of homogenisation, and that extensions of the potential to the compactification must acquire degenerate singularities.

Typical and Admissible ranks over fields

Let $X(\RR)$ be a geometrically connected variety defined over $\RR$ and such that the set of all its (also complex) points $X(\CC)$ is non-degenerate. We introduce the notion of \emph{admissible rank} of a point PP with respect to XX to be the minimal cardinality of a set of points of $X(\CC)$ such that P∈⟨S⟩P\in \langle S \rangle that is stable under conjugation. Any set evincing the admissible rank can be equipped with a \emph{label} keeping track of the number of its complex and real points. We show that in the case of generic identifiability there is an open dense euclidean subset of points with certain admissible rank for any possible label. Moreover we show that if XX is a rational normal curve than there always exists a label for the generic element. We present two examples in which either the label doesn't exists or the admissible rank is strictly bigger than the usual complex rank.

Globally generated vector bundles on P1×P1×P1\mathbf{P}^1 \times \mathbf{P}^1 \times \mathbf{P}^1 with low first Chern classes

We classify globally generated vector bundles on P1×P1×P1\mathbf{P}^1 \times \mathbf{P}^1 \times \mathbf{P}^1 with small first Chern class, i.e. c1=(a1,a2,a3)c_1= (a_1, a_2, a_3), ai≤2a_i \le 2. Our main method is to investigate the associated smooth curves to globally generated vector bundles via the Hartshorne-Serre correspondence.

On large theta-characteristics with prescribed vanishing

Let CC be a smooth projective curve of genus g≥2g\geq 2. Fix an integer r≥0r\geq 0, and let k‾=(k1,…,kn)\underline{k}=(k_1,\ldots,k_n) be a sequence of positive integers with k1+…+kn=g−1k_1+\ldots+k_n=g-1. We study nn-pointed curves (C,p1,…,pn)(C,p_1,\ldots,p_n) such that the line bundle L:=OC(∑i=1nkipi)L:=O_C\left(\sum_{i=1}^n k_i p_i\right) is a theta-characteristic such that h0(C,L)h^0\left(C,L\right) is at least r+1r+1 and it has the same parity as r+1r+1. We prove that they describe a sublocus Ggr(k‾)\mathcal{G}^r_g(\underline{k}) of Mg,n\mathcal{M}_{g,n} having codimension at most g−1+r(r−1)2g-1+\frac{r(r-1)}{2}. Moreover, for any r≥0r\geq 0, k‾\underline{k} as above, and gg greater than an explicit integer g(r)g(r) depending on rr, we present irreducible components of Ggr(k‾)\mathcal{G}^r_g(\underline{k}) attaining the maximal codimension in Mg,n\mathcal{M}_{g,n}, so that the bound turns out to be sharp.

On Segre's bound for fat points in Pn\mathbb{P}^n

For a scheme of fat points ZZ defined by the saturated ideal IZ\mathcal{I}_Z, the regularity index computes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Cohen-Macaulay ring R/IZ.R/\mathcal{I}_Z. For points in " general position" we improve the bound for the regularity index computed by Segre for P2\mathbb {P}^2 and generalised by Catalisano, Trung and Valla for Pn\mathbb {P}^n. Moreover, we prove that the generalised Segre's bound conjectured by Fatabbi and Lorenzini holds for n+3n+3 arbitrary points in Pn\mathbb {P}^n. We propose a modification of Segre's conjecture for arbitrary points and we discuss some evidences.

The locus of points of the Hilbert scheme with bounded regularity

In this paper we consider the Hilbert scheme Hilbp(t)nHilb_{p(t)}^n parameterizing subschemes of PnP^n with Hilbert polynomial p(t)p(t), and we investigate its locus containing points corresponding to schemes with regularity lower than or equal to a fixed integer r′r'. This locus is an open subscheme of Hilbp(t)nHilb_{p(t)}^n and, for every s≥r′s\geq r', we describe it as a locally closed subscheme of the Grasmannian Grp(s)N(s)Gr_{p(s)}^{N(s)} given by a set of equations of degree ≤deg(p(t))+2\leq \mathrm{deg}(p(t))+2 and linear inequalities in the coordinates of the Plücker embedding.

On the duals of geometric Goppa codes from norm-trace curves

In this paper we study the dual codes of a wide family of evaluation codes on norm-trace curves. We explicitly find out their minimum distance and give a lower bound for the number of their minimum-weight codewords. A general geometric approach is performed and applied to study in particular the dual codes of one-point and two-point codes arising from norm-trace curves through Goppa's construction, providing in many cases their minimum distance and some bounds on the number of their minimum-weight codewords. The results are obtained by showing that the supports of the minimum-weight codewords of the studied codes obey some precise geometric laws as zero-dimensional subschemes of the projective plane. Finally, the dimension of some classical two-point Goppa codes on norm-trace curves is explicitly computed.

In this paper for all g≥40805g\ge 40805 we construct several examples of smooth curves CC of genus gg with d3(C)/3<d4(C)/4d_3(C)/3< d_4(C)/4, i.e. for which a slope inequality fails.

On the minimum distance and the minimum weight of Goppa codes from a quotient of the Hermitian curve

In this paper we study evaluation codes arising from plane quotients of the Hermitian curve, defined by affine equations of the form yq+y=xmy^q+y=x^m, qq being a prime power and mm a positive integer which divides q+1q+1. The dual minimum distance and minimum weight of such codes are studied from a geometric point of view. In many cases we completely describe the minimum-weight codewords of their dual codes through a geometric characterization of the supports, and provide their number. Finally, we apply our results to describe Goppa codes of classical interest on such curves.

On the surjectivity of weighted Gaussian maps

We study the surjectivity of suitable weighted Gaussian maps which provide a natural generalization of the standard Gaussian maps and encode the local geometry of the locus of curves endowed with a higher root of the canonical bundle having associated linear system of dimension at least r + 1. In particular, we get a bound on the dimension of its Zariski tangent space, which turns out to be sharp in the special case r = 0. Finally, we describe this locus in the case of complete intersection curves.

On the typical rank of real polynomials (or symmetric tensors) with a fixed border rank

Let σb(Xm,d(C))(R)σ_b(X_{m,d}(\mathbb {C}))(\mathbb {R}), b(m+1)<(m+dm)b(m+1) < \binom{m+d}{m}, denote the set of all degree dd real homogeneous polynomials in m+1m+1 variables (i.e. real symmetric tensors of format (m+1)×...×(m+1)(m+1)\times ... \times (m+1), dd times) which have border rank bb over C\mathbb {C}. It has a partition into manifolds of real dimension ≤b(m+1)−1\le b(m+1)-1 in which the real rank is constant. A typical rank of σb(Xm,d(C))(R)σ_b(X_{m,d}(\mathbb {C}))(\mathbb {R}) is a rank associated to an open part of dimension b(m+1)−1b(m+1)-1. Here we classify all typical ranks when b≤7b\le 7 and d,md, m are not too small. For a larger sets of (m,d,b)(m,d,b) we prove that bb and b+d−2b+d-2 are the two first typical ranks. In the case m=1m=1 (real bivariate polynomials) we prove that dd (the maximal possible a priori value of the real rank) is a typical rank for every bb.

Stratification of the fourth secant variety of Veronese variety via the symmetric rank

If X⊂PnX\subset \mathbb{P}^n is a projective non degenerate variety, the XX-rank of a point P∈PnP\in \mathbb{P}^n is defined to be the minimum integer rr such that PP belongs to the span of rr points of XX. We describe the complete stratification of the fourth secant variety of any Veronese variety XX via the XX-rank. This result has an equivalent translation in terms both of symmetric tensors and homogeneous polynomials. It allows to classify all the possible integers rr that can occur in the minimal decomposition of either a symmetric tensor or a homogeneous polynomial of XX-border rank 4 (i.e. contained in the fourth secant variety) as a linear combination of either completely decomposable tensors or powers of linear forms respectively.

Embedding Suzuki curves in P4\mathbb{P}^4

Here we study the projective geometry of smooth models Xn⊆P4X_n \subseteq \mathbb{P}^4 of plane Suzuki curves SnS_n. In particular, here we explicitly count the hypersurfaces of P4\mathbb{P}^4 containing XnX_n and provide a geometric characterization of those of small degree. Grassmann secants, identifiability, and linear systems of tensors

For any irreducible non-degenerate variety X⊂PrX\subset \mathbb{P}^r, we give a criterion for the (k,s)(k,s)-identifiability of XX. Moreover, if the ss-th secant variety of XX is not defective and it does not fill the ambient space, then we can produce a family of pairs (k,s)(k,s) for which the (k,s)(k,s)-identifiability holds for XX.

Decomposition of homogeneous polynomials with low rank

Let FF be a homogeneous polynomial of degree dd in m+1m+1 variables defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and suppose that FF belongs to the ss-th secant varieties of the standard Veronese variety Xm,d⊂P(m+dd)−1X_{m,d}\subset \mathbb{P}^{{m+d\choose d}-1} but that its minimal decomposition as a sum of dd-th powers of linear forms M1,...,MrM_1, ..., M_r is F=M1d+...+MrdF=M_1^d+... + M_r^d with r>sr>s. We show that if s+r≤2d+1s+r\leq 2d+1 then such a decomposition of FF can be split in two parts: one of them is made by linear forms that can be written using only two variables, the other part is uniquely determined once one has fixed the first part. We also obtain a uniqueness theorem for the minimal decomposition of FF if the rank is at most dd and a mild condition is satisfied.

Canonical curves with low apolarity

Let kk be an algebraically closed field and let CC be a non--hyperelliptic smooth projective curve of genus gg defined over kk. Since the canonical model of CC is arithmetically Gorenstein, Macaulay's theory of inverse systems allows to associate to CC a cubic form ff in the divided power kk--algebra RR in g−2g-2 variables. The apolarity of CC is the minimal number tt of linear form in RR needed to write ff as sum of their divided power cubes. It is easy to see that the apolarity of CC is at least g−2g-2 and P. Non-vanishing theorems for rank two vector bundles on threefolds

The paper investigates the non-vanishing of H1(E(n))H^1(E(n)), where EE is a (normalized) rank two vector bundle over any smooth irreducible threefold XX of degree dd such that $Pic(X) \cong \ZZ$. If εε is the integer defined by the equality ωX=OX(ε)ω_X = O_X(ε), and αα is the least integer tt such that H0(E(t))≠0H^0(E(t)) \ne 0, then, for a non-stable EE (α≤0α\le 0) the first cohomology module does not vanish at least between the endpoints ε−c12\frac{ε-c_1}{2} and −α−c1−1-α-c_1-1. The paper also shows that there are other non-vanishing intervals, whose endpoints depend on αα and also on the second Chern class c2c_2 of EE. If EE is stable the first cohomology module does not vanish at least between the endpoints ε−c12\frac{ε-c_1}{2} and α−2α-2. The paper considers also the case of a threefold XX with $Pic(X) \ne \ZZ$ but $Num(X) \cong \ZZ$ and gives similar non-vanishing results.

Then, if X⊂PnX\subset {\mathbb P}^n is a curve obtained from a projection of a rational normal curve C⊂Pn+1C\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+1} from a point O⊂Pn+1O\subset {\mathbb P}^{n+1}, we are able to describe the precise value of the XX-rank for those points P∈PnP\in {\mathbb P}^n such that RX(P)≤RC(O)−1R_{X}(P)\leq R_{C}(O)-1 and to improve the general result. Moreover we give a stratification, via the XX-rank, of the osculating spaces to projective cuspidal projective curves XX. Finally we give a description and a new bound of the XX-rank of subspaces both in the general case and with respect to integral non-degenerate projective curves.

On the X-rank with respect to linearly normal curves

In this paper we study the XX-rank of points with respect to smooth linearly normal curves $X\subset \PP n$ of genus gg and degree n+gn+g. We prove that, for such a curve XX, under certain circumstances, the XX-rank of a general point of XX-border rank equal to ss is less or equal than n+1−sn+1-s. In the particular case of g=2g=2 we give a complete description of the XX-rank if n=3,4n=3,4; while if n≥5n\geq 5 we study the XX-rank of points belonging to the tangential variety of XX.
