$VH+\text{jet}$ production in hadron-hadron collisions up to order $α_s^3$ in perturbative QCD

We present precise predictions for the hadronic production of an on-shell Higgs boson in association with a leptonically decaying gauge boson and a jet up to order $α_s^3$. We include the complete set of NNLO QCD corrections to both charged- and neutral-current Drell-Yan type contributions, as well as the previously known leading heavy quark loop induced contributions which involve a direct Higgs-quark coupling. As an application, we study a range of differential observables in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\text{TeV}$ for both the charged- and neutral-current production modes. For each Higgs production process, we assess the improvement in the theoretical uncertainty for both the exclusive ($n_{\text{jet}} = 1$) and inclusive ($n_{\text{jet}} \geq 1$) jet categories. We find that the inclusion of the NNLO corrections to the Drell-Yan type contributions is essential in stabilising the predictions and in reducing the theoretical uncertainty for both inclusive and exclusive jet production for all three modes. This is particularly true in the kinematical regimes associated with low to medium values of the transverse momentum of the produced vector boson and where the differential cross sections are the largest. For the neutral-current process, we find that the heavy quark loop induced contributions have their largest phenomenological impact (an increase in the size of the NNLO corrections, a distortion of the distribution shape and an enlargement of the left over remaining uncertainties) in kinematical regions associated to large values of $p_{T,Z}$ (typically above $150~\text{GeV}$) where the cross sections are smaller.

NNLO interpolation grids for jet production at the LHC

Fast interpolation-grid frameworks facilitate an efficient and flexible evaluation of higher-order predictions for any choice of parton distribution functions or value of the strong coupling $α_s$. They constitute an essential tool for the extraction of parton distribution functions and Standard Model parameters, as well as studies of the dependence of cross sections on the renormalisation and factorisation scales. The APPLfast project provides a generic interface between the parton-level Monte Carlo generator NNLOJET and both the APPLgrid and the fastNLO libraries for the grid interpolation. The extension of the project to include hadron-hadron collider processes at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD is presented, together with an application for jet production at the LHC.

NNLO Photon Production with Realistic Photon Isolation

Isolated photon production at hadron colliders proceeds via direct production and fragmentation processes. Theory predictions for the isolated photon and photon-plus-jet cross section often impose idealised photon isolation criteria, eliminating the fragmentation contribution and introducing a systematic uncertainty in the comparison to data. We present NNLO predictions for the photon-plus-jet cross section with the experimental isolation including both, direct and fragmentation contributions. Predictions with two different parton-to-photon fragmentation functions are compared, allowing for an estimation of the uncertainty stemming from the only loosely constrained photon fragmentation functions.

preprint2022arXiv

Single Photon Production at Hadron Colliders at NNLO QCD with Realistic Photon Isolation

Isolated photons at hadron colliders are defined by permitting only a limited amount of hadronic energy inside a fixed-size cone around the candidate photon direction. This isolation criterion admits contributions from collinear photon radiation off QCD partons and from parton-to-photon fragmentation processes. We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to isolated photon and photon-plus-jet production, including these two contributions. Our newly derived results allow us to reproduce the isolation prescription used in the experimental measurements, performing detailed comparisons with data from the LHC experiments. We quantify the impact of different photon isolation prescriptions, including no isolation at all, on photon-plus-jet cross sections and discuss possible measurements of the photon fragmentation functions at hadron colliders.

Transverse momentum distributions in low-mass Drell-Yan lepton pair production at NNLO QCD

The production of lepton pairs at low invariant mass and finite transverse momentum resolves QCD dynamics at the boundary between the perturbative and non-perturbative domains. We investigate the impact of NNLO QCD corrections on these observables at energies corresponding to the BNL RHIC collider and to fixed-target experiments. Satisfactory perturbative convergence is observed in both cases. Only the collider data are found to be well-described by perturbative QCD, thus indicating the importance of non-perturbative effects in lepton-pair transverse momentum distributions at fixed target energies.

Fiducial cross sections for the lepton-pair-plus-photon decay mode in Higgs production up to NNLO QCD

The rare three-body decay of a Higgs boson to a lepton-antilepton pair and a photon is starting to become experimentally accessible at the LHC. We investigate how higher-order QCD corrections to the dominant gluon-fusion production process impact on the fiducial cross sections in this specific Higgs decay mode for electrons and muons. Corrections up to NNLO QCD are found to be sizeable. They are generally uniform in kinematical variables related to the Higgs boson, but display several distinctive features in the kinematics of its individual decay products.

Predictions for $\mathrm{Z}$-boson production in association with a $\mathrm{b}$-jet at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$

Precise predictions are provided for the production of a $\mathrm{Z}$-boson and a $\mathrm{b}$-jet in hadron-hadron collisions within the framework of perturbative QCD, at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$. To obtain these predictions we perform the first calculation of a hadronic scattering process involving the direct production of a flavoured-jet at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in massless QCD, and extend techniques to also account for the impact of finite heavy-quark mass effects. The predictions are compared to CMS data obtained in $\mathrm{pp}$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $8~\mathrm{TeV}$, which are the most precise data from Run I of the LHC for this process, where a good description of the data is achieved. To allow this comparison we have performed an unfolding of the data, which overcomes the long-standing issue that the experimental and theoretical definitions of jet flavour are incompatible.

Fiducial cross sections for the four-lepton decay mode in Higgs-plus-jet production up to NNLO QCD

The four-lepton decay mode of the Higgs boson allows for a clean kinematic reconstruction, thereby enabling precision studies of the Higgs boson properties and of its production dynamics. We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to fiducial cross sections relevant to this decay mode in the gluon-fusion production of a Higgs boson in association with a hadronic jet, and study the impact of the QCD corrections on the fiducial acceptance factors in inclusive Higgs and Higgs-plus-jet production. We investigate in detail the different definitions used in the ATLAS and CMS measurements to define the fiducial cross sections. Differences in the lepton isolation prescription are found to have a sizeable impact on the higher order corrections to the fiducial acceptance factors.

Associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottom quarks and a weak vector boson decaying leptonically at NNLO in QCD

We present the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections in perturbative QCD for the production of a Higgs boson decaying into a pair of bottom quarks in association with a leptonically decaying weak vector boson: $\mathrm{pp} \to V \mathrm{H} + X \to \ell\bar{\ell}\;\mathrm{b\bar{b}} + X$. We consider the corrections to both the production and decay sub-processes, retaining a fully differential description of the final state including off-shell propagators of the Higgs and vector boson. The calculation is carried out using the antenna subtraction formalism and is implemented in the NNLOJET framework. Clustering and identification of $\mathrm{b}$-jets is performed with the flavour-$k_t$ algorithm and results for fiducial cross sections and distributions are presented for the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13\;\text{TeV}$. We assess the residual theory uncertainty by varying the production and decay scales independently and provide scale uncertainty bands in our results, yielding percent-level accurate predictions for observables in this Higgs production mode computed at NNLO. Confronting a naïve perturbative expansion of the cross section against the customary re-scaling procedure to a fixed branching ratio reveals that starting from NNLO, the latter could be inadequate in estimating missing higher-order effects through scale variations.

NNLO QCD corrections for Z boson plus jet production

We discuss the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to Z boson production in association with a jet including all partonic channels at all color levels and including the leptonic decay of the Z boson. We focus on the optimization of the numerical evaluation of the double-real contribution and demonstrate that our procedure for spreading the Monte Carlo integration over $\mathcal{O}(1000)$ cores and recombining the results afterwards lead to stable results with sensible error estimates. We apply representative cuts on the jet and charged lepton transverse momenta and pseudorapidities at LHC energies and present the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of the charged leptons.

NNLO QCD corrections to Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum

We derive the second-order QCD corrections to the production of a Higgs boson recoiling against a parton with finite transverse momentum, working in the effective field theory in which the top quark contributions are integrated out. To account for quark mass effects, we supplement the effective field theory result by the full quark mass dependence at leading order. Our calculation is fully differential in the final state kinematics and includes the decay of the Higgs boson to a photon pair. It allows one to make next-to-next-to- leading order (NNLO)-accurate theory predictions for Higgs-plus-jet final states and for the transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson, accounting for the experimental definition of the fiducial cross sections. The NNLO QCD corrections are found to be moderate and positive, they lead to a substantial reduction of the theory uncertainty on the predictions. We compare our results to 8 TeV LHC data from ATLAS and CMS. While the shape of the data is well-described for both experiments, we agree on the normalization only for CMS. By normalizing data and theory to the inclusive fiducial cross section for Higgs production, good agreement is found for both experiments, however at the expense of an increased theory uncertainty. We make predictions for Higgs production observables at the 13 TeV LHC, which are in good agreement with recent ATLAS data. At this energy, the leading order mass corrections to the effective field theory prediction become significant at large transverse momenta, and we discuss the resulting uncertainties on the predictions.

Precise QCD predictions for the production of a Z boson in association with a hadronic jet

We compute the cross section and differential distributions for the production of a Z boson in association with a hadronic jet to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, including the leptonic decay of the Z boson. We present numerical results for the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of both the Z boson and the associated jet at the LHC. We find that the NNLO corrections increase the next-to-leading order (NLO) predictions by approximately 1% and significantly reduce the scale variation uncertainty.

The NNLO QCD corrections to Z boson production at large transverse momentum

The transverse momentum distribution of massive neutral vector bosons can be measured to high accuracy at hadron colliders. The transverse momentum is caused by a partonic recoil, and is determined by QCD dynamics. We compute the single and double-differential transverse momentum distributions for fully inclusive $Z/γ^*$ production including leptonic decay to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. We also compute the same distributions normalised to the cross sections for inclusive $Z/γ^*$ production, i.e. integrated over the transverse momentum of the lepton pair. We compare our predictions for the fiducial cross sections to the 8 TeV data set from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, which both observed a tension between data and NLO theory predictions, using the experimental cuts and binning. We find that the inclusion of the NNLO QCD effects does not fully resolve the tension with the data for the unnormalised $p^Z_T$ distribution. However, we observe that normalising the NNLO $Z$-boson transverse momentum distribution by the NNLO Drell-Yan cross section substantially improves the agreement between experimental data and theory, and opens the way for precision QCD studies of this observable.

Z+jet production at NNLO

We give a brief overview of our calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to Z+jet production in hadronic collisions. Phenomenological results are presented which comprise various differential distributions for 8 TeV proton-proton collisions. A significant reduction of the scale uncertainties is observed throughout as we move from NLO to NNLO. We further discuss how this calculation can be used to describe the inclusive Z-boson production at large transverse momentum. To this end, the theory prediction is compared to the measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Here, the inclusion of NNLO QCD effects are found to result in a substantial improvement in the agreement between theory and data for the normalised distributions.

EERAD3: Event shapes and jet rates in electron-positron annihilation at order $α_s^3$

The program EERAD3 computes the parton-level QCD contributions to event shapes and jet rates in electron-positron annihilation through to order $α_s^3$. For three-jet production and related observables, this corresponds to next-to-next-to-leading order corrections, and allows for precision QCD studies. We describe the program and its usage in detail.

Precise QCD predictions for the production of Higgs+jet final states

We compute the cross section and differential distributions for the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a hadronic jet to next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In Higgs boson studies at the LHC, final states containing one jet are a dominant contribution to the total event rate, and their understanding is crucial for improved determinations of the Higgs boson properties. We observe substantial higher order corrections to transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions in Higgs-plus-one-jet final states. Their inclusion stabilises the residual theoretical uncertainty of the predictions around 9\%, thereby providing important input to precision studies of the Higgs boson.

Infrared Structure at NNLO Using Antenna Subtraction

We consider the infrared structure of hadron-hadron collisions at next-to-next-to leading order using the antenna subtraction method. The general form of the subtraction terms is presented for double real, real-virtual and double virtual contributions. At NLO and NNLO it is shown that the virtual and double virtual subtraction terms can be written in terms of integrated dipoles, formed by systematically combining the mass factorisation contributions and integrated antenna functions. The integrated dipoles describing $\ell$ unresolved partons, denoted $\bs{J}_{2}^{(\ell)}$, are related to Catani's IR singularity operators, $\bs{I}_{ij}^{(\ell)}(\eps)$. It is shown that the IR pole structure of the virtual and double virtual contributions can be written as a sum over integrated dipoles within the antenna subtraction formalism and the master expressions analogous to Catani's one- and two-loop factorisation formulae are derived. To demonstrate the techniques described in this paper, we apply antenna subtraction to the production of two gluon jets via quark-antiquark scattering at NLO and NNLO. Double real, real-virtual and double virtual subtraction terms are explicitly derived for the leading colour NNLO contribution.

NNLO QCD corrections to dijet production at hadron colliders

In this talk we present the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to dijet production and related observables at hadron colliders in the purely gluonic channel. Results for this channel are obtained keeping all orders of $N_C$ in the colour expansion. We show that the NNLO correction significantly reduces the scale uncertainty compared to next-to-leading order (NLO). We present the NNLO double-differential single jet inclusive cross section where jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_T$ jet algorithm and show the dependence on the jet resolution parameter $R$.

NNLO QCD corrections to jet production at hadron colliders from gluon scattering

We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to dijet production in the purely gluonic channel retaining the full dependence on the number of colours. The sub-leading colour contribution in this channel first appears at NNLO and, as expected, increases the NNLO correction by around 10% and exhibits a pT dependence, rising from 8% at low pT to 15% at high pT . The present calculation demonstrates the utility of the antenna subtraction method for computing the full colour NNLO corrections to dijet production at the Large Hadron Collider.

Double Virtual corrections for gluon scattering at NNLO

We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the double virtual infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. In previous papers, we derived the subtraction terms that rendered (a) the double real radiation tree-level process finite in the single and double unresolved regions of phase space and (b) the mixed single real radiation one-loop process both finite and well behaved in the unresolved regions of phase space. Here, we show how to construct the double virtual subtraction term using antenna functions with both initial- and final-state partons which remove the explicit infrared poles present in the two-loop amplitude. As an explicit example, we write down the subtraction term for the four-gluon two-loop process. The infrared poles are explicitly and locally cancelled in all regions of phase space leaving a finite remainder that can be safely evaluated numerically in four-dimensions.

Antenna subtraction for gluon scattering at NNLO

We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the double real radiation infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. The antenna subtraction framework has been successfully applied to the calculation of NNLO corrections to the 3-jet cross section and related event shape distributions in electron-positron annihilation. Here we consider processes with two coloured particles in the initial state, and in particular two-jet production at hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We construct a subtraction term that describes the single and double unresolved contributions from the six-gluon tree-level process using antenna functions with initial state partons and show numerically that the subtraction term correctly approximates the matrix elements in the various single and double unresolved configurations.

Real-Virtual corrections for gluon scattering at NNLO

We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the mixed real-virtual infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. In a previous paper, we derived the subtraction term that rendered the double real radiation tree-level process finite in the single and double unresolved regions of phase space. Here, we show how to construct the real-virtual subtraction term using antenna functions with both initial- and final-state partons which removes the explicit infrared poles present in the one-loop amplitude, as well as the implicit singularities that occur in the soft and collinear limits. As an explicit example, we write down the subtraction term that describes the single unresolved contributions from the five-gluon one-loop process. The infrared poles are explicitly and locally cancelled in all regions of phase space prior to integration, leaving a finite remainder that can be safely evaluated numerically in four-dimensions. We show numerically that the subtraction term correctly approximates the matrix elements in the various single unresolved configurations.

Two-Loop QCD Corrections to the Helicity Amplitudes for $H \to$ 3 partons

Many search strategies for the Standard Model Higgs boson apply specific selection criteria on hadronic jets observed in association with the Higgs boson decay products, either in the form of a jet veto, or by defining event samples according to jet multiplicity. To improve the theoretical description of Higgs-boson-plus-jet production (and the closely related Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution), we derive the two-loop QCD corrections to the helicity amplitudes for the processes $H \to ggg$ and $H\to q \bar q g$ in an effective theory with infinite top quark mass. The helicity amplitudes are extracted from the coefficients appearing in the general tensorial structure for each process. The coefficients are derived from the Feynman graph amplitudes by means of projectors within the conventional dimensional regularization scheme. The infrared pole structure of our result agrees with the expectation from infrared factorization and the finite parts of the amplitudes are expressed in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms.

NNLO real corrections to gluon scattering

In this talk we describe a procedure for isolating the infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. We use the antenna subtraction framework which has been successfully applied to the calculation of NNLO corrections to the 3-jet cross section and related event shape distributions in electron-positron annihilation. Here we consider processes with coloured particles in the initial state, and in particular two-jet production at hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We construct a subtraction term that describes the single and double unresolved contributions from gluonic processes using antenna functions with initial state partons and show numerically that the subtraction term correctly approximates the matrix elements in the various single and double unresolved configurations.

Precise determination of the strong coupling constant at NNLO in QCD from the three-jet rate in electron--positron annihilation at LEP

We present the first determination of the strong coupling constant from the three-jet rate in e+e- annihilation at LEP, based on a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) perturbative QCD prediction. More precisely, we extract alpha_s by fitting perturbative QCD predictions at O(alpha_s^3) to data from the ALEPH experiment at LEP. Over a large range of the jet-resolution parameter ycut this observable is characterised by small non-perturbative corrections and an excellent stability under renormalisation scale variation. For the three-jet rate at ln(ycut) = -3.9 we find alpha_s(MZ) = 0.1175 +/- 0.0020(exp) \+/- 0.0015(theo), which is among the most precise determinations from jet observables at LEP.

Antenna Subtraction at NNLO

The computation of exclusive QCD jet observables at higher orders requires a method for the subtraction of infrared singular configurations arising from multiple radiation of real partons. We present a subtraction scheme relevant for NNLO perturbative calculations in $e^+e^- \to $ jets. The building blocks of the scheme are antenna functions derived from the matrix elements for tree-level $1\to 3$ and $1 \to 4$ and one-loop $1 \to 3$ processes. By construction, these building blocks have the correct infrared behaviour when one or two particles are unresolved. At the same time, their integral over the antenna phase space is straightforward. As an example of how to use the scheme we compute the NNLO contributions to the subleading colour QED-like contribution to $e^+e^- \to 3$ jets. To illustrate the application of NNLO antenna subtraction for different colour structures, we construct the integrated forms of the subtraction terms needed for the five-parton and four-parton contributions to $e^+e^- \to 3$ jets at NNLO in all colour factors, and show that their infrared poles cancel analytically with the infrared poles of the two-loop virtual correction to this observable.

Two-loop QCD helicity amplitudes for massless quark-massless gauge boson scattering

We present the two-loop helicity amplitudes for the scattering of massless quarks and massless gauge bosons in QCD. We use projector techniques to compute the coefficients of the general tensor describing the two-quark two-boson amplitude in conventional dimensional regularisation and use these coefficients to derive the helicity amplitudes in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme. The structure of the infrared divergences agrees with that predicted by Catani while expressions for the finite remainders for q qbar -> gluon gluon, q qbar -> gluon gamma, q qbar -> gamma gamma and the processes related by crossing symmetry are given in terms of logarithms and polylogarithms that are real in the physical region. We have checked that the interference of tree and two-loop helicity amplitudes, summed over helicities and colours, reproduces the previous results for the finite remainders for interference of tree and two-loop amplitudes given in Refs. [1,2]. We also find agreement with the two-loop helicity amplitudes for quark-gluon scattering presented in Ref. [3].

MHV Rules for Higgs Plus Multi-Gluon Amplitudes

We use tree-level perturbation theory to show how non-supersymmetric one-loop scattering amplitudes for a Higgs boson plus an arbitrary number of partons can be constructed, in the limit of a heavy top quark, from a generalization of the scalar graph approach of Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten. The Higgs boson couples to gluons through a top quark loop which generates, for large top mass, a dimension-5 operator H tr G^2. This effective interaction leads to amplitudes which cannot be described by the standard MHV rules; for example, amplitudes where all of the gluons have positive helicity. We split the effective interaction into the sum of two terms, one holomorphic (selfdual) and one anti-holomorphic (anti-selfdual). The holomorphic interactions give a new set of MHV vertices -- identical in form to those of pure gauge theory, except for momentum conservation -- that can be combined with pure gauge theory MHV vertices to produce a tower of amplitudes with more than two negative helicities. Similarly, the anti-holomorphic interactions give anti-MHV vertices that can be combined with pure gauge theory anti-MHV vertices to produce a tower of amplitudes with more than two positive helicities. A Higgs boson amplitude is the sum of one MHV-tower amplitude and one anti-MHV-tower amplitude. We present all MHV-tower amplitudes with up to four negative-helicity gluons and any number of positive-helicity gluons (NNMHV). These rules reproduce all of the available analytic formulae for Higgs + n-gluon scattering (n<=5) at tree level, in some cases yielding considerably shorter expressions.

MHV Rules for Higgs Plus Multi-Parton Amplitudes

We present MHV-rules for constructing perturbative amplitudes for a Higgs boson and an arbitrary number of partons. We give explicit expressions for amplitudes involving a Higgs and three negative helicity partons and any number of positive helicity partons - the NMHV amplitudes. We also present a recursive formulation of MHV rules that incorporates the Higgs, quarks and gluons. The recursion relations are valid for all non-MHV amplitudes. The general results agree numerically with all of the available Higgs + n-parton amplitudes and in some cases provide considerably shorter expressions.

Two-Loop QCD Helicity Amplitudes for $e^+e^- \to 3$~Jets

We compute the two-loop QCD helicity amplitudes for the process e^+e^- --> q bar{q} g. The amplitudes are extracted in a scheme-independent manner from the coefficients appearing in the general tensorial structure for this process. The tensor coefficients are derived from the Feynman graph amplitudes by means of projectors, within the conventional dimensional regularization scheme. The actual calculation of the loop integrals is then performed by reducing all of them to a small set of known master integrals. The infrared pole structure of the renormalized helicity amplitudes agrees with the prediction made by Catani using an infrared factorization formula. We use this formula to structure our results for the finite part into terms arising from the expansion of the pole coefficients and a genuine finite remainder, which is independent of the scheme used to define the helicity amplitudes. The analytic result for the finite parts of the amplitudes is expressed in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms.

One-loop QCD corrections to gluon-gluon scattering at NNLO

We present the O(alphas^4) virtual QCD corrections to gluon-gluon scattering due to the self-interference of the one-loop amplitude. We give analytic expressions renormalised in the MSbar scheme and work in conventional dimensional regularisation. We write the structure of the infrared divergences from direct Feynman diagram evaluation in terms of the Catani formalism for infrared divergences. Formulae for the finite remainder are given in terms of logarithms that are real in the physical region. These results, together with those previously obtained for quark-quark and quark-gluon scattering complete the one-loop matrix elements for 2 to 2 processes needed for the next-to-next-to-leading order contribution to inclusive jet production at hadron colliders.

Resumming the Light Hemisphere Mass and Narrow Jet Broadening distributions in e^+e^- annihilation

We present predictions of two event shape distributions, the light hemisphere mass and the narrow jet broadening, to next-to-leading logarithmic order. We apply the coherent branching formalism to resum the leading O(alphas^n L^{2n-1}) and next-to-leading O(alphas^n L^{2n-2}) infrared logarithms to all orders in the coupling constant. We include the recently calculated non-logarithmic next-to-leading order contributions. Applying simple power corrections to the resummed result gives good agreement with the available data from LEP.

The high energy limit of QCD at two loops

By taking the high-energy limit of the two-loop amplitudes for parton-parton scattering, we have tested the validity of Fadin-Lipatov's ansatz for parton-parton scattering in the high-energy limit. As expected, we have found that it holds at LL and NLL accuracy, and hence we have independently re-evaluated the two-loop Regge trajectory, finding full agreement with the previous results by Fadin and collaborators. We have found, though, that the universality implied by the ansatz is violated at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level.

The Two-Loop QCD Matrix Element for $e^+e^- \to 3$ Jets

We compute the ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$ virtual QCD corrections to the $γ^*\to q\bar q g$ matrix element arising from the interference of the two-loop with the tree-level amplitude and from the self-interference of the one-loop amplitude. The calculation is performed by reducing all loop integrals appearing in the two-loop amplitude to a small set of known master integrals. Infrared and ultraviolet divergences are both regularized using conventional dimensional regularization, and the ultraviolet renormalization is performed in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. The infrared pole structure of the matrix elements agrees with the prediction made by Catani using an infrared factorization formula. The analytic result for the finite terms of both matrix elements is expressed in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms.

Two-loop QCD corrections to gluon-gluon scattering

We present the O(alpha_s^4) virtual QCD corrections to gluon-gluon scattering due to the interference of tree and two-loop amplitudes. We work in conventional dimensional regularisation and give analytic expressions renormalised in the MSbar scheme. The structure of the infrared divergences agrees with that predicted by Catani while formulae for the finite remainder are given in terms of logarithms and polylogarithms that are real in the physical region. These results, together with those previously obtained for quark-quark and quark-gluon scattering, complete the two-loop matrix elements needed for the next-to-next-to-leading order contribution to inclusive jet production at hadron colliders.
