NNLO interpolation grids for jet production at the LHC

Fast interpolation-grid frameworks facilitate an efficient and flexible evaluation of higher-order predictions for any choice of parton distribution functions or value of the strong coupling $α_s$. They constitute an essential tool for the extraction of parton distribution functions and Standard Model parameters, as well as studies of the dependence of cross sections on the renormalisation and factorisation scales. The APPLfast project provides a generic interface between the parton-level Monte Carlo generator NNLOJET and both the APPLgrid and the fastNLO libraries for the grid interpolation. The extension of the project to include hadron-hadron collider processes at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD is presented, together with an application for jet production at the LHC.

NNLO Photon Production with Realistic Photon Isolation

Isolated photon production at hadron colliders proceeds via direct production and fragmentation processes. Theory predictions for the isolated photon and photon-plus-jet cross section often impose idealised photon isolation criteria, eliminating the fragmentation contribution and introducing a systematic uncertainty in the comparison to data. We present NNLO predictions for the photon-plus-jet cross section with the experimental isolation including both, direct and fragmentation contributions. Predictions with two different parton-to-photon fragmentation functions are compared, allowing for an estimation of the uncertainty stemming from the only loosely constrained photon fragmentation functions.

Single Photon Production at Hadron Colliders at NNLO QCD with Realistic Photon Isolation

Isolated photons at hadron colliders are defined by permitting only a limited amount of hadronic energy inside a fixed-size cone around the candidate photon direction. This isolation criterion admits contributions from collinear photon radiation off QCD partons and from parton-to-photon fragmentation processes. We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to isolated photon and photon-plus-jet production, including these two contributions. Our newly derived results allow us to reproduce the isolation prescription used in the experimental measurements, performing detailed comparisons with data from the LHC experiments. We quantify the impact of different photon isolation prescriptions, including no isolation at all, on photon-plus-jet cross sections and discuss possible measurements of the photon fragmentation functions at hadron colliders.

Transverse momentum distributions in low-mass Drell-Yan lepton pair production at NNLO QCD

The production of lepton pairs at low invariant mass and finite transverse momentum resolves QCD dynamics at the boundary between the perturbative and non-perturbative domains. We investigate the impact of NNLO QCD corrections on these observables at energies corresponding to the BNL RHIC collider and to fixed-target experiments. Satisfactory perturbative convergence is observed in both cases. Only the collider data are found to be well-described by perturbative QCD, thus indicating the importance of non-perturbative effects in lepton-pair transverse momentum distributions at fixed target energies.

Fiducial cross sections for the lepton-pair-plus-photon decay mode in Higgs production up to NNLO QCD

The rare three-body decay of a Higgs boson to a lepton-antilepton pair and a photon is starting to become experimentally accessible at the LHC. We investigate how higher-order QCD corrections to the dominant gluon-fusion production process impact on the fiducial cross sections in this specific Higgs decay mode for electrons and muons. Corrections up to NNLO QCD are found to be sizeable. They are generally uniform in kinematical variables related to the Higgs boson, but display several distinctive features in the kinematics of its individual decay products.

All master integrals for three-jet production at NNLO

We evaluate analytically all previously unknown nonplanar master integrals for massless five-particle scattering at two loops, using the differential equations method. A canonical form of the differential equations is obtained by identifying integrals with constant leading singularities, in $D$ space-time dimensions. These integrals evaluate to $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combinations of multiple polylogarithms of uniform weight at each order in the expansion in the dimensional regularization parameter, and are in agreement with previous conjectures for nonplanar pentagon functions. Our results provide the complete set of two-loop Feynman integrals for any massless $2\to 3$ scattering process, thereby opening up a new level of precision collider phenomenology.

Fiducial cross sections for the four-lepton decay mode in Higgs-plus-jet production up to NNLO QCD

The four-lepton decay mode of the Higgs boson allows for a clean kinematic reconstruction, thereby enabling precision studies of the Higgs boson properties and of its production dynamics. We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to fiducial cross sections relevant to this decay mode in the gluon-fusion production of a Higgs boson in association with a hadronic jet, and study the impact of the QCD corrections on the fiducial acceptance factors in inclusive Higgs and Higgs-plus-jet production. We investigate in detail the different definitions used in the ATLAS and CMS measurements to define the fiducial cross sections. Differences in the lepton isolation prescription are found to have a sizeable impact on the higher order corrections to the fiducial acceptance factors.

Analytic form of the two-loop planar five-gluon all-plus-helicity amplitude in QCD

Virtual two-loop corrections to scattering amplitudes are a key ingredient to precision physics at collider experiments. We compute the full set of planar master integrals relevant to five-point functions in massless QCD, and use these to derive an analytical expression for the two-loop five-gluon all-plus-helicity amplitude. After subtracting terms that are related to the universal infrared and ultraviolet pole structure, we obtain a remarkably simple and compact finite remainder function, consisting only of dilogarithms.

NNLO QCD corrections for Z boson plus jet production

We discuss the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to Z boson production in association with a jet including all partonic channels at all color levels and including the leptonic decay of the Z boson. We focus on the optimization of the numerical evaluation of the double-real contribution and demonstrate that our procedure for spreading the Monte Carlo integration over $\mathcal{O}(1000)$ cores and recombining the results afterwards lead to stable results with sensible error estimates. We apply representative cuts on the jet and charged lepton transverse momenta and pseudorapidities at LHC energies and present the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of the charged leptons.

NNLO QCD corrections to Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum

We derive the second-order QCD corrections to the production of a Higgs boson recoiling against a parton with finite transverse momentum, working in the effective field theory in which the top quark contributions are integrated out. To account for quark mass effects, we supplement the effective field theory result by the full quark mass dependence at leading order. Our calculation is fully differential in the final state kinematics and includes the decay of the Higgs boson to a photon pair. It allows one to make next-to-next-to- leading order (NNLO)-accurate theory predictions for Higgs-plus-jet final states and for the transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson, accounting for the experimental definition of the fiducial cross sections. The NNLO QCD corrections are found to be moderate and positive, they lead to a substantial reduction of the theory uncertainty on the predictions. We compare our results to 8 TeV LHC data from ATLAS and CMS. While the shape of the data is well-described for both experiments, we agree on the normalization only for CMS. By normalizing data and theory to the inclusive fiducial cross section for Higgs production, good agreement is found for both experiments, however at the expense of an increased theory uncertainty. We make predictions for Higgs production observables at the 13 TeV LHC, which are in good agreement with recent ATLAS data. At this energy, the leading order mass corrections to the effective field theory prediction become significant at large transverse momenta, and we discuss the resulting uncertainties on the predictions.

Precise QCD predictions for the production of a Z boson in association with a hadronic jet

We compute the cross section and differential distributions for the production of a Z boson in association with a hadronic jet to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, including the leptonic decay of the Z boson. We present numerical results for the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of both the Z boson and the associated jet at the LHC. We find that the NNLO corrections increase the next-to-leading order (NLO) predictions by approximately 1% and significantly reduce the scale variation uncertainty.

The NNLO QCD corrections to Z boson production at large transverse momentum

The transverse momentum distribution of massive neutral vector bosons can be measured to high accuracy at hadron colliders. The transverse momentum is caused by a partonic recoil, and is determined by QCD dynamics. We compute the single and double-differential transverse momentum distributions for fully inclusive $Z/γ^*$ production including leptonic decay to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. We also compute the same distributions normalised to the cross sections for inclusive $Z/γ^*$ production, i.e. integrated over the transverse momentum of the lepton pair. We compare our predictions for the fiducial cross sections to the 8 TeV data set from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, which both observed a tension between data and NLO theory predictions, using the experimental cuts and binning. We find that the inclusion of the NNLO QCD effects does not fully resolve the tension with the data for the unnormalised $p^Z_T$ distribution. However, we observe that normalising the NNLO $Z$-boson transverse momentum distribution by the NNLO Drell-Yan cross section substantially improves the agreement between experimental data and theory, and opens the way for precision QCD studies of this observable.

Z+jet production at NNLO

We give a brief overview of our calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to Z+jet production in hadronic collisions. Phenomenological results are presented which comprise various differential distributions for 8 TeV proton-proton collisions. A significant reduction of the scale uncertainties is observed throughout as we move from NLO to NNLO. We further discuss how this calculation can be used to describe the inclusive Z-boson production at large transverse momentum. To this end, the theory prediction is compared to the measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Here, the inclusion of NNLO QCD effects are found to result in a substantial improvement in the agreement between theory and data for the normalised distributions.

$W^+W^-$ production at hadron colliders in NNLO QCD

Charged gauge boson pair production at the Large Hadron Collider allows detailed probes of the fundamental structure of electroweak interactions. We present precise theoretical predictions for on-shell $W^+W^-$ production that include, for the first time, QCD effects up to next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbation theory. As compared to next-to-leading order, the inclusive $W^+W^-$ cross section is enhanced by 9% at 7 TeV and 12% at 14 TeV. The residual perturbative uncertainty is at the 3% level. The severe contamination of the $W^+W^-$ cross section due to top-quark resonances is discussed in detail. Comparing different definitions of top-free $W^+W^-$ production in the four and five flavour number schemes, we demonstrate that top-quark resonances can be separated from the inclusive $W^+W^-$ cross section without significant loss of theoretical precision.

EERAD3: Event shapes and jet rates in electron-positron annihilation at order $α_s^3$

The program EERAD3 computes the parton-level QCD contributions to event shapes and jet rates in electron-positron annihilation through to order $α_s^3$. For three-jet production and related observables, this corresponds to next-to-next-to-leading order corrections, and allows for precision QCD studies. We describe the program and its usage in detail.

Photon isolation effects at NLO in gamma gamma + jet final states in hadronic collisions

We present the NLO QCD corrections to diphoton plus jet production at hadron colliders. Our calculation includes contributions from the fragmentation of a hadronic jet into a highly energetic photon, and consequently allows the implementation of arbitrary infrared-safe photon isolation definitions. We compare different photon isolation criteria and perform a detailed study of the dependence of the diphoton plus jet cross section on the photon isolation parameters.

Precise QCD predictions for the production of Higgs+jet final states

We compute the cross section and differential distributions for the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a hadronic jet to next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In Higgs boson studies at the LHC, final states containing one jet are a dominant contribution to the total event rate, and their understanding is crucial for improved determinations of the Higgs boson properties. We observe substantial higher order corrections to transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions in Higgs-plus-one-jet final states. Their inclusion stabilises the residual theoretical uncertainty of the predictions around 9\%, thereby providing important input to precision studies of the Higgs boson.

ZZ production at hadron colliders in NNLO QCD

We report on the first calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the inclusive production of ZZ pairs at hadron colliders. Numerical results are presented for pp collisions with centre-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) ranging from 7 to 14 TeV. The NNLO corrections increase the NLO result by an amount varying from $11\%$ to $17\%$ as $\sqrt{s}$ goes from 7 to 14 TeV. The loop-induced gluon fusion contribution provides about $60\%$ of the total NNLO effect. When going from NLO to NNLO the scale uncertainties do not decrease and remain at the $\pm 3\%$ level.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

Light-quark two-loop corrections to heavy-quark pair production in the gluon fusion channel

We calculate the two-loop corrections to heavy-quark pair production in the gluon fusion channel which arise from diagrams involving a closed light-quark loop. The calculation is carried out by keeping the exact dependence on the heavy-quark mass. The analytic results are written in terms of logarithms, classical polylogarithms Li_n (n=2,3,4), and genuine multiple polylogarithms Li_{2,2}. The functional arguments are rational expressions of two independent external invariants and they are chosen in such a way that the functions are real in all the physical phase-space points. Through systematic changes in the functional basis, we obtain expansions of the results in both the production threshold and small mass limits.

On the Relation of the LHeC and the LHC

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $α_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN: Report on the Physics and Design Concepts for Machine and Detector

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

QCD corrections to longitudinal spin asymmetries in $W^\pm$-boson production at RHIC

The polarized antiquark distributions in the proton can be measured by studying spin asymmetries in vector boson production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions. The STAR and PHENIX experiments at BNL RHIC have reported first observations of single spin asymmetries in $W^\pm$-production most recently. We compute the QCD corrections to single and double spin asymmetries, taking account of the leptonic decay of the $W^\pm$ boson and of restrictions on the kinematical acceptance of the detectors. The QCD corrections have only a small impact on the asymmetries, such that a reliable extraction of the polarized antiquark distributions can be envisaged once more precise measurements are made.

Two-Loop QCD Corrections to the Helicity Amplitudes for $H \to$ 3 partons

Many search strategies for the Standard Model Higgs boson apply specific selection criteria on hadronic jets observed in association with the Higgs boson decay products, either in the form of a jet veto, or by defining event samples according to jet multiplicity. To improve the theoretical description of Higgs-boson-plus-jet production (and the closely related Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution), we derive the two-loop QCD corrections to the helicity amplitudes for the processes $H \to ggg$ and $H\to q \bar q g$ in an effective theory with infinite top quark mass. The helicity amplitudes are extracted from the coefficients appearing in the general tensorial structure for each process. The coefficients are derived from the Feynman graph amplitudes by means of projectors within the conventional dimensional regularization scheme. The infrared pole structure of our result agrees with the expectation from infrared factorization and the finite parts of the amplitudes are expressed in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms.

Hadronization effects in event shape moments

We study the moments of hadronic event shapes in $e^+e^-$ annihilation within the context of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) perturbative QCD predictions combined with non-perturbative power corrections in the dispersive model. This model is extended to match upon the NNLO perturbative prediction. The resulting theoretical expression has been compared to experimental data from JADE and OPAL, and a new value for $α_s(M_Z)$ has been determined, as well as of the average coupling $α_0$ in the non-perturbative region below $μ_I=2$ GeV within the dispersive model: α_s(M_Z)&=0.1153\pm0.0017(\mathrm{exp})\pm0.0023(\mathrm{th}),α_0&=0.5132\pm0.0115(\mathrm{exp})\pm0.0381(\mathrm{th}), The precision of the $α_s(M_Z)$ value has been improved in comparison to the previously available next-to-leading order analysis. We observe that the resulting power corrections are considerably larger than those estimated from hadronization models in multi-purpose event generator programs.

Precise determination of the strong coupling constant at NNLO in QCD from the three-jet rate in electron--positron annihilation at LEP

We present the first determination of the strong coupling constant from the three-jet rate in e+e- annihilation at LEP, based on a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) perturbative QCD prediction. More precisely, we extract alpha_s by fitting perturbative QCD predictions at O(alpha_s^3) to data from the ALEPH experiment at LEP. Over a large range of the jet-resolution parameter ycut this observable is characterised by small non-perturbative corrections and an excellent stability under renormalisation scale variation. For the three-jet rate at ln(ycut) = -3.9 we find alpha_s(MZ) = 0.1175 +/- 0.0020(exp) \+/- 0.0015(theo), which is among the most precise determinations from jet observables at LEP.

Two-Loop Leading Color Corrections to Heavy-Quark Pair Production in the Gluon Fusion Channel

We evaluate the two-loop QCD diagrams contributing to the leading color coefficient of the heavy-quark pair production cross section in the gluon fusion channel. We obtain an analytic expression, which is valid for any value of the Mandelstam invariants s and t and of the heavy-quark mass m. Our findings agree with previous analytic results in the small-mass limit and with recent results for the coefficients of the IR poles.

Antenna subtraction at NNLO with hadronic initial states: initial-final configurations

We extend the antenna subtraction method to include initial states containing one hadron at NNLO. We present results for all the necessary subtraction terms, antenna functions, for the master integrals required to integrate them over the relevant phase space and finally for the integrated antennae themselves. Where applicable, our results are cross-checked against the known NNLO coefficient functions for deep inelastic scattering processes.

Antenna Subtraction at NNLO

The computation of exclusive QCD jet observables at higher orders requires a method for the subtraction of infrared singular configurations arising from multiple radiation of real partons. We present a subtraction scheme relevant for NNLO perturbative calculations in $e^+e^- \to $ jets. The building blocks of the scheme are antenna functions derived from the matrix elements for tree-level $1\to 3$ and $1 \to 4$ and one-loop $1 \to 3$ processes. By construction, these building blocks have the correct infrared behaviour when one or two particles are unresolved. At the same time, their integral over the antenna phase space is straightforward. As an example of how to use the scheme we compute the NNLO contributions to the subleading colour QED-like contribution to $e^+e^- \to 3$ jets. To illustrate the application of NNLO antenna subtraction for different colour structures, we construct the integrated forms of the subtraction terms needed for the five-parton and four-parton contributions to $e^+e^- \to 3$ jets at NNLO in all colour factors, and show that their infrared poles cancel analytically with the infrared poles of the two-loop virtual correction to this observable.

Antenna subtraction with hadronic initial states

The antenna subtraction method for the computation of higher order corrections to jet observables and exclusive cross sections at collider experiments is extended to include hadronic initial states. In addition to the already known antenna subtraction with both radiators in the final state (final-final antennae), we introduce antenna subtractions with one or two radiators in the initial state (initial-final or initial-initial antennae). For those, we derive the phase space factorization and discuss the allowed phase space mappings at NLO and NNLO. We present integrated forms for all antenna functions relevant to NLO calculations, and describe the construction of the full antenna subtraction terms at NLO on two examples. The extension of the formalism to NNLO is outlined.

Master Integrals for Massless Three-Loop Form Factors: One-Loop and Two-Loop Insertions

The three-loop form factors in massless QCD can be expressed as a linear combination of master integrals. Besides a number of master integrals which factorise into products of one-loop and two-loop integrals, one finds 16 genuine three-loop integrals. Of these, six have the form of a bubble insertion inside a one-loop or two-loop vertex integral. We compute all master integrals with these insertion topologies.

QCD Corrections to Static Heavy Quark Form Factors

Interactions of heavy quarks, in particular of top quarks, with electroweak gauge bosons are expected to be very sensitive to new physics effects related to electroweak symmetry breaking. These interactions are described by the so-called static form factors, which include anomalous magnetic moments and the effective weak charges. We compute the second-order QCD corrections to these static form factors, which turn out to be sizeable and need to be taken into account in searches for new anomalous coupling effects.

Two-Loop QCD Corrections to the Heavy Quark Form Factors: Anomaly Contributions

We present closed analytic expressions for the order $α_s^2$ triangle diagram contributions to the matrix elements of the singlet and non-singlet axial vector currents between the vacuum and a quark-antiquark state. We have calculated these vertex functions for arbitrary momentum transfer and for four different sets of internal and external quark masses. We show that both the singlet and non-singlet vertex functions satisfy the correct chiral Ward identities. Using the exact expressions for the finite axial vector form factors, we check the quality and the convergence of expansions at production threshold and for asymptotic energies.

Two-Loop QCD Corrections to the Heavy Quark Form Factors: Axial Vector Contributions

We consider the Z Q Qbar vertex to second order in the QCD coupling for an on-shell massive quark-antiquark pair and for arbitrary momentum transfer of the Z boson. We present closed analytic expressions for the two parity-violating form factors of that vertex at the two-loop level in QCD, excluding the contributions from triangle diagrams. These form factors are expressed in terms of 1-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms of maximum weight 4.

Analytic Continuation of Massless Two-Loop Four-Point Functions

We describe the analytic continuation of two-loop four-point functions with one off-shell external leg and internal massless propagators from the Euclidean region of space-like $1\to 3$ decay to Minkowskian regions relevant to all $1\to 3$ and $2\to 2$ reactions with one space-like or time-like off-shell external leg. Our results can be used to derive two-loop master integrals and unrenormalized matrix elements for hadronic vector-boson-plus-jet production and deep inelastic two-plus-one-jet production, from results previously obtained for three-jet production in electron--positron annihilation.

Two-Loop QCD Helicity Amplitudes for $e^+e^- \to 3$~Jets

We compute the two-loop QCD helicity amplitudes for the process e^+e^- --> q bar{q} g. The amplitudes are extracted in a scheme-independent manner from the coefficients appearing in the general tensorial structure for this process. The tensor coefficients are derived from the Feynman graph amplitudes by means of projectors, within the conventional dimensional regularization scheme. The actual calculation of the loop integrals is then performed by reducing all of them to a small set of known master integrals. The infrared pole structure of the renormalized helicity amplitudes agrees with the prediction made by Catani using an infrared factorization formula. We use this formula to structure our results for the finite part into terms arising from the expansion of the pole coefficients and a genuine finite remainder, which is independent of the scheme used to define the helicity amplitudes. The analytic result for the finite parts of the amplitudes is expressed in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms.

The Two-Loop QCD Matrix Element for $e^+e^- \to 3$ Jets

We compute the ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$ virtual QCD corrections to the $γ^*\to q\bar q g$ matrix element arising from the interference of the two-loop with the tree-level amplitude and from the self-interference of the one-loop amplitude. The calculation is performed by reducing all loop integrals appearing in the two-loop amplitude to a small set of known master integrals. Infrared and ultraviolet divergences are both regularized using conventional dimensional regularization, and the ultraviolet renormalization is performed in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. The infrared pole structure of the matrix elements agrees with the prediction made by Catani using an infrared factorization formula. The analytic result for the finite terms of both matrix elements is expressed in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms.

Two-Loop Master Integrals for $γ^* \to 3$ Jets: The non-planar topologies

The calculation of the two-loop corrections to the three-jet production rate and to event shapes in electron--positron annihilation requires the computation of a number of two-loop four-point master integrals with one off-shell and three on-shell legs. Up to now, only those master integrals corresponding to planar topologies were known. In this paper, we compute the yet outstanding non-planar master integrals by solving differential equations in the external invariants which are fulfilled by these master integrals. We obtain the master integrals as expansions in $\e=(4-d)/2$, where $d$ is the space-time dimension. The fully analytic results are expressed in terms of the two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms already introduced in the evaluation of the planar topologies.

Combined analysis of diffractive and inclusive structure functions in the semiclassical framework

Small-x DIS is described as the scattering of a partonic fluctuation of the photon off a superposition of target color fields. Diffraction occurs if the emerging partonic state is in a color singlet. Introducing a specific model for the averaging over all relevant color field configurations, both diffractive and inclusive parton distributions at some low scale Q_0^2 can be calculated. A conventional DGLAP analysis results in a good description of diffractive and inclusive structure functions at higher values of Q^2.

Spin Dependence of Deep Inelastic Diffraction

Using a perturbative model for diffractive interactions, we derive an expression for the polarized diffractive structure function $g_1^D$ in the high energy limit. This structure function is given by the interference of diffractive amplitudes with polarized and unpolarized exchanges. For the polarized exchange we consider both two-gluon and quark-antiquark amplitudes. The polarized diffractive amplitude receives sizable contributions from non-strongly ordered regions in phase space, resulting in a double logarithmic enhancement at small $x$. The resummation of these double logarithmic terms is outlined. We also discuss the transition from our perturbative expression to the nonperturbative region. A first numerical estimate indicates that the perturbative contribution to the spin asymmetry is substantially larger than the nonperturbative one.

Inclusive and Diffractive Structure Functions at Small x

In the semiclassical approach, inclusive and diffractive quark and gluon distributions are expressed in terms of correlation functions of Wilson loops. Each Wilson loop integrates the colour field strength in the area between the trajectories of two fast partons penetrating the proton. We introduce a specific model for averaging over the relevant colour field configurations. Within this model, all parton distributions at some low scale Q_0^2 are given in terms of three parameters. Inclusive and diffractive structure functions at higher values of Q^2 are determined in a leading-order QCD analysis. In both cases, the evolution is driven by a large gluon distribution. A satisfactory description of the structure functions F_2(x,Q^2) and F_2^D(3)(xi,beta,Q^2) is obtained. The observed rise of F_2^D(3) with xi is parametrized by a non-perturbative logarithmic energy dependence, compatible with unitarity. In our analysis, the observed rise of F_2 at small x is largely due to the same effect.

QCD corrections to the longitudinally polarized Drell-Yan process

In this paper we calculate the O($α_s$) corrections to the $x_F$- and $y$-distributions of lepton pairs produced in collisions of longitudinally polarized hadrons. The numerical importance of these corrections is studied and consequences for the extraction of the polarized sea quark distributions from a measurement of the longitudinally polarized Drell-Yan cross section are discussed.

Analytic Approaches to the Evolution of Polarised Parton Distributions at Small $x$

The $Q^2$ evolution of polarised parton distributions at small $x$ is studied. Various analytic approximations are critically discussed. We compare the full evolution with that obtained from the leading-pole approximation to the splitting functions, and show that the validity of this approximation depends critically on the $x \to 0$ behaviour of the starting distributions. A new analytic solution which is valid at small $x$ is obtained, and its domain of applicability is discussed.

Polarized Parton Distributions in the Nucleon

The distribution of the spin of the nucleon among its constituents can be parametrized in the form of polarized parton distribution functions for quarks and gluons. Using all available data on the polarized structure function $g_1(x,Q^2)$, we determine these distributions both at leading and next-to-leading order in perturbation theory. We suggest three different, equally possible scenarios for the polarized gluon distribution, which is found to be only loosely constrained by current experimental data. We examine various possibilities of measuring polarized parton distributions at future experiments.

Spin-dependent Parton Distributions from Polarized Structure Function Data

In the past year, polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments at CERN and SLAC have obtained structure function measurements off proton, neutron and deuteron targets at a level of precision never before achieved. The measurements can be used to test the Bjorken and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules, and also to obtain information on the parton distributions in polarized nucleons. We perform a global leading-order QCD fit to the proton deep inelastic data in order to extract the spin-dependent parton distributions. By using parametric forms which are consistent with theoretical expectations at large and small $x$, we find that the quark distributions are now rather well constrained. We assume that there is no significant intrinsic polarization of the strange quark sea. The data are then consistent with a modest amount of the proton's spin carried by the gluon, although the shape of the gluon distribution is not well constrained, and several qualitatively different shapes are suggested. The spin-dependent distributions we obtain can be used as input to phenomenological studies for future polarized hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron colliders.
