Competing valence bond and symmetry breaking Mott states of spin-3/2 fermions on a honeycomb lattice

We investigate magnetic properties of strongly interacting four component spin-3/2 ultracold fermionic atoms in the Mott insulator limit with one particle per site in an optical lattice with honeycomb symmetry. In this limit, atomic tunneling is virtual, and only the atomic spins can exchange. We find a competition between symmetry breaking and liquid like disordered phases. Particularly interesting are valence bond states with bond centered magnetizations, situated between the ferromagnetic and conventional valence bond phases. In the framework of a mean-field theory, we calculate the phase diagram and identify an experimentally relevant parameter region where a homogeneous SU(4) symmetric Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-like valence bond state is present.

Orbital-FFLO state in a chain of high spin ultracold atoms

Recent experiments with Yb-173 and Sr-87 isotopes provide new possibilities to study high spin two-orbital systems. Within these experiments part of the atoms are excited to a higher energy metastable electronic state mimicking an additional internal (orbital) degree of freedom. The interaction between the atoms depends on the orbital states, therefore four different scattering channels can be identified in the system characterized by four independent couplings. When the system is confined into a one-dimensional chain the scattering lengths can be tuned by changing the transverse confinement, and driven through four resonances. Using the new available experimental data of the scattering lengths we analyze the phase diagram of the one-dimensional system as the couplings are tuned via transverse confinement, and the populations of the two orbital states are changed. We found that three orders compete showing power law decay: a state with dominant density wave fluctuations, another one with spin density fluctuations, and a third one characterized by exotic Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-like pairs consisting one atom in the electronic ground state and one in the excited state. We also show that sufficiently close to the resonances the compressibility of the system starts to diverge indicating that the emerging order is unstable and collapses to a phase separated state with a first order phase transition.

Phase Separation of Superfluids in the Chain of Four-Component Ultracold Atoms

We investigate the competition of various exotic superfluid states in a chain of spin-polarized ultracold fermionic atoms with hyperfine spin $F = 3/2$ and s-wave contact interactions. We show that the ground state is an exotic inhomogeneous mixture in which two distinct superfluid phases --- spin-carrying pairs and singlet quartets --- form alternating domains in an extended region of the parameter space.

Emergence of Quintet Superfluidity in the Chain of Partially Polarized Spin-3/2 Ultracold Atom

The system of ultracold atoms with hyperfine spin $F=3/2$ might be unstable against the formation of quintet pairs if the interaction is attractive in the quintet channel. We have investigated the behavior of correlation functions in a model including only s-wave interactions at quarter filling by large-scale density-matrix renormalization-group simulations. We show that the correlations of quintet pairs become quasi-long-ranged, when the system is partially polarized, leading to the emergence of various mixed superfluid phases in which BCS-like pairs carrying different magnetic moment coexist.

Spin liquid phases of alkaline-earth-metal atoms at finite temperature

We study spin liquid phases of spin-5/2 alkaline earth atoms on a honeycomb lattice at finite temperatures. Our analysis is based on a Gutzwiller projection variational approach recast to a path-integral formalism. In the framework of a saddle-point approximation we determine spin liquid phases with lowest free energy and study their temperature dependence. We identify a critical temperature, where all the spin liquid phases melt and the system goes to the paramagnetic phase. We also study the stability of the saddle-point solutions and show that a time-reversal symmetry breaking state, a so called chiral spin liquid phase is realized even at finite temperatures. We also determine the spin structure factor, which, in principle, is an experimentally measurable quantity and is the basic tool to map the spectrum of elementary excitations of the system.

Exotic magnetic orders for high spin ultracold fermions

We study Hubbard models for ultracold bosonic or fermionic atoms loaded into an optical lattice. The atoms carry a high spin $F>1/2$, and interact on site via strong repulsive Van der Waals forces. Making convenient rearrangements of the interaction terms, and exploiting their symmetry properties, we derive low energy effective models with nearest-neighbor interactions, and their properties. We apply our method to $F=3/2$, and 5/2 fermions on two-dimensional square lattice at quarter, and 1/6 fillings, respectively, and investigate mean-field equations for repulsive couplings. We find for $F=3/2$ fermions that the plaquette state appearing in the highly symmetric SU(4) case does not require fine tuning, and is stable in an extended region of the phase diagram. This phase competes with an SU(2) flux state, that is always suppressed for repulsive interactions in absence of external magnetic field. The SU(2) flux state has, however, lower energy than the plaquette phase, and stabilizes in the presence of weak applied magnetic field. For $F=5/2$ fermions a similar SU(2) plaquette phase is found to be the ground state without external magnetic field.

Phase diagram of the t-U-J1-J2 chain at half filling

We investigate the half-filled Hubbard chain with additional nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor spin exchange, J1 and J2, using bosonization and the density-matrix renormalization group. For J2 = 0 we find a spin-density-wave phase for all positive values of the Hubbard interaction U and the Heisenberg exchange J1. A frustrating spin exchange J2 induces a bond-order-wave phase. For some values of J1, J2 and U, we observe a spin-gapped metallic Luther-Emery phase.

Spatially nonuniform phases in the one-dimensional SU(n) Hubbard model for commensurate fillings

The one-dimensional repulsive SU$(n)$ Hubbard model is investigated analytically by bosonization approach and numerically using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method for $n=3,4$, and 5 for commensurate fillings $f=p/q$ where $p$ and $q$ are relatively prime. It is shown that the behavior of the system is drastically different depending on whether $q>n$, $q=n$, or $q<n$. When $q>n$, the umklapp processes are irrelevant, the model is equivalent to an $n$-component Luttinger liquid with central charge $c=n$. When $q=n$, the charge and spin modes are decoupled, the umklapp processes open a charge gap for finite $U>0$, whereas the spin modes remain gapless and the central charge $c=n-1$. The translational symmetry is not broken in the ground state for any $n$. On the other hand, when $q<n$, the charge and spin modes are coupled, the umklapp processes open gaps in all excitation branches, and a spatially nonuniform ground state develops. Bond-ordered dimerized, trimerized or tetramerized phases are found depending on the filling.

Mott transition and dimerization in the one-dimensional SU$(n)$ Hubbard model

The one-dimensional SU$(n)$ Hubbard model is investigated numerically for $n=2,3,4$, and 5 at half filling and $1/n$ filling using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. The energy gaps and various quantum information entropies are calculated. In the half-filled case, finite spin and charge gaps are found for arbitrary positive $U$ if $n > 2$. Furthermore, it is shown that the transition to the gapped phase at $U_{\rm c}=0$ is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type and is accompanied by a bond dimerization both for even and odd $n$. In the $1/n$-filled case, the transition has similar features as the metal-insulator transition in the half-filled SU(2) Hubbard model. The charge gap opens exponentially slowly for $U>U_{\rm c}=0$, the spin sector remains gapless, and the ground state is non-dimerized.

Possible phases of two coupled n-component fermionic chains

A two-leg ladder with $n$-component fermionic fields in the chains has been considered using an analytic renormalization group method. The fixed points and possible phases have been determined for generic filling as well as for a half-filled system and for the case when one of the subbands is half filled. A weak-coupling Luttinger-liquid phase and several strong-coupling gapped phases have been found. In the Luttinger liquid phase, for the most general spin dependence of the couplings, all $2n$ modes have different velocities if the interband scattering processes are scaled out, while $n$ doubly degenerate modes appear if the interband scattering processes remain finite. The role of backward-scattering, charge-transfer and umklapp processes has been analysed using their bosonic form and the possible phases are characterized by the number of gapless modes. As a special case the SU($n$) symmetric Hubbard ladder has been investigated numerically. It was found that this model does not scale to the Luttinger liquid fixed point. Even for generic filling gaps open up in the spectrum of the spin or charge modes, and the system is always insulator in the presence of umklapp processes.
