TauSpinner algorithms for including spin and New Physics effects in $\bar q q \rightarrow Z/γ^* \to ττ$ process

The possible anomalous New Physics contributions to dipole and weak dipole moments of the $τ$ lepton bring renewed interest in development and revisiting charge-parity violating signatures in $τ$-pair production in $Z$-boson decay at energies of the LHC. In this paper, we discuss effects of anomalous contributions to polarisation and spin correlations in the $\bar q q \to τ^+ τ^-$ production processes, with $τ$ decays included. Because of the complex nature of the resulting distributions, Monte Carlo techniques are useful, in particular of event reweighing with studied New Physics phenomena. Extensions of the Standard Model spin amplitudes, within Improved Born Approximation used for matrix element, are implemented in the TauSpinner program. This is mainly with $τ$ dipole and weak dipole moments in mind, but is applicable to arbitrary New Physics interactions, provided they can be encapsulated into the Standard Model $2 \to 2$ structure of matrix element extensions. Implementation allows one also to introduce arbitrary phase-shift between vector and axial-vector couplings of $Z$ boson to $τ$ leptons, which would have impact on observed transverse spin correlations. Basic formulas and algorithm principles are presented, together with distributions for spin correlation matrix. Numerical examples of impact on experimental signatures are shown in case of $τ^\pm \to ρ^\pm ν_τ\to π^\pm π^0 ν_τ$ decays. Information on how to use and configure the TauSpinner program is given in Appendix.

Adequacy of Effective Born for electroweak effects and TauSpinner algorithms for LEP, Tevatron, HL-LHC and FCC simulated samples

Matching and comparing measurements of past and future experiments calls for consistency checks of calculations used for their interpretation. New schemes of the field theory may optimize precision, but obscure comparisons with earlier results. Over years concepts of Improved Born, Effective Born, effective couplings, and sin^2theta_W^eff mixing angle for electroweak interactions, have evolved. We use four DIZET electroweak library versions; of today and of the last 30 years, wich were used for phenomenology of practically all HEP accelerator experiments. Versions differ by incremented with time updates of corrections. We rely on the codes archived with the KKMC Monte Carlo program for e^+e^- to f bar f n(gamma). Versions became recently available for the TauSpinner reweighting of simulated and stored events. Documentation of TauSpinner upgrade, to version 2.1.0, and of its arrangement for semi-automated electroweak (EW) effects benchmark plots are provided. Details which can be used to complete simulated sample with EW effects, are given. Focus is placed on numerical results and on approximations introduced in Improved Born to obtain Effective Born, to match with QCD corrections. The tau lepton polarization P_tau, forward backward asymmetry A_FB and parton level cross section sigma^tot are used to monitor electroweak effects and effective sin^2theta_W^eff limitations. Results include: (i) feasibility of Effective Born approximation and sin^2theta_W^eff, (ii) differences between versions of electroweak libraries and (iii) parametric ambiguities due to e.g. m_t or Delta alpha_h^(5)(s). Example results allow to evaluate adequacy of Effective Born with respect to Improved Born.

Deep Neural Network application: Higgs boson CP state mixing angle in H to tau tau decay and at LHC

The consecutive steps of cascade decay initiated by H to tau tau can be useful for the measurement of Higgs couplings and in particular of the Higgs boson parity. In the previous papers we have found, that multi-dimensional signatures of the tau^pm to pi^pm pi^0 nu and tau^pm to 3pi^pm nu decays can be used to distinguish between scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs state. The Machine Learning techniques (ML) of binary classification, offered break-through opportunities to manage such complex multidimensional signatures. The classification between two possible CP states: scalar and pseudoscalar, is now extended to the measurement of the hypothetical mixing angle of Higgs boson parity states. The functional dependence of H to tau tau matrix element on the mixing angle is predicted by theory. The potential to determine preferred mixing angle of the Higgs boson events sample including $τ$-decays is studied using Deep Neural Network. The problem is adressed as classification or regression with the aim to determine the per-event: a) probability distribution (spin weight) of the mixing angle; b) parameters of the functional form of the spin weight; c) the most preferred mixing angle. Performance of methods are evaluated and compared. Numerical results are collected.

Measurements of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $K^0_S$, $Λ$ and proton production in proton-carbon interactions at 31 GeV/$c$ with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

Measurements of hadron production in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c are performed using the NA61/ SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2009 using a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Inelastic and production cross sections as well as spectra of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, p, $K^0_S$ and $Λ$ are measured with high precision. These measurements are essential for improved calculations of the initial neutrino fluxes in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. A comparison of the NA61/SHINE measurements with predictions of several hadroproduction models is presented.

Multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations in inelastic proton-proton interactions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

Measurements of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations of charged particles were performed in inelastic p+p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Results for the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution and for three strongly intensive measures of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations \$Δ[P_{T},N]\$, \$Σ[P_{T},N]\$ and \$Φ_{p_T}\$ are presented. For the first time the results on fluctuations are fully corrected for experimental biases. The results on multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations significantly deviate from expectations for the independent particle production. They also depend on charges of selected hadrons. The string-resonance Monte Carlo models EPOS and UrQMD do not describe the data. The scaled variance of multiplicity fluctuations is significantly higher in inelastic p+p interactions than in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by NA49 at the same energy per nucleon. This is in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of the Wounded Nucleon Model. Within the statistical framework the enhanced multiplicity fluctuations in inelastic p+p interactions can be interpreted as due to event-by-event fluctuations of the fireball energy and/or volume.

Potential for optimizing Higgs boson CP measurement in H to tau tau decay at LHC and ML techniques

We investigate potential for measuring CP state of the Higgs boson in the H to tau tau$ decay with consecutive tau-lepton decays in channels: tau^+- to rho^+- nu_tau and tau^+- to a1^+- nu_tau combined. Subsequent decays rho^+- to pi^+- pi^0, a1^+- to rho^0 pi^+- and rho^0 to pi^+ pi^- are taken into account. We will explore extensions of the method, where acoplanarity angle for the planes build on the visible decay products, pi^+- pi^0 of tau^+- to pi^pm pi^0 nu_tau, was used. The angle is sensitive to transverse spin correlations, thus to parity. We show, that in the case of the cascade decays of tau to a1 nu, information on the CP state of Higgs can be extracted from the acoplanarity angles as well. Because in the cascade decay a1^+- to rho^0 pi^pm,rho^0 to pi^+ pi^- up to four planes can be defined, up to 16 distinct acoplanarity angles are available for H \to tau tau to a1^+ a1^- nu nu decays. These acoplanarities carry in part supplementary but also correlated information. It is thus cumbersome to evaluate an overall sensitivity. We investigate sensitivity potential of such analysis, by developing and implementing model in the Machine Learning (ML) techniques. We quantify possible improvements when multi-dimensional phase-space of outgoing decay products directions is used, instead of 1-dimensional projections i.e. the acoplanarity angles. We do not take into account ambiguities resulting from detector uncertainties or background contamination, we concentrate on usefulness of ML methods and tau to 3pi nu decays for Higgs boson parity measurement.

Production of tau lepton pairs with high pT jets at the LHC and the TauSpinner reweighting algorithm

The TauSpinner algorithm allows to modify the physics of the Monte Carlo generated samples due to the changed assumptions of event production dynamics, without re-generating events. To each event it attributes weights: the spin effects of tau-lepton production or decay, or the production mechanism are modified. There is no need to repeat the detector response simulation. We document the extension to 2 to 4 processes in which the matrix elements for the parton-parton scattering amplitudes into a tau-lepton pair and two outgoing partons are used. Tree-level matrix elements for the Standard Model processes, including the Higgs boson production are used. Automatically generated codes by MadGraph5 have been adapted. Tests of the matrix elements, reweighting algorithm and numerical results are presented. For averaged tau lepton polarisation, we perform comparison of 2 to 2 and 2 to 4 matrix elements used to calculate the spin weight in pp to tau tau j j events. We show, that for events with tau-lepton pair close to the Z-boson peak, the tau-lepton polarisation calculated using 2 to 4 matrix elements is very close to the one calculated using 2 to 2 Born process only. For the m_(tautau) masses above the Z-boson peak, the effect from including 2 to 4 matrix elements is also marginal, however when restricting into subprocesses qq,q bar q to tau tau j j only, it can lead to a 10% difference on the predicted tau-lepton polarisation. Choice of electroweak scheme can have significant impact. The modification of the electroweak or strong interaction can be performed with the re-weighting technique. TauSpinner v.2.0.0, allows to introduce non-standard couplings for the Higgs boson and study their effects in the vector-boson-fusion. The discussion is relegated to forthcoming publications.

Separating Electroweak and Strong interactions in Drell-Yan processes at LHC: leptons angular distributions and reference frames

Among the physics goals of LHC experiments, precision tests of the Standard Model in the Strong and Electroweak sectors play an important role. Because of nature of the proton-proton processes, observables based on the measurement of the direction and energy of leptons provide the most precise signatures. In the present paper, we concentrate on the angular distribution of Drell-Yan process leptons, in the lepton-pair rest-frame. The vector nature of the intermediate state imposes that distributions are to a good precision described by spherical polynomials of at most second order. We show that with the proper choice of the coordinate frames, only one coefficient in this polynomial decomposition remains sizable, even in the presence of one or two high $p_T$ jets. The necessary stochastic choice of the frames relies on probabilities independent from any coupling constants. This remains true when one or two partons accompany the lepton pairs. In this way electroweak effects can be better separated from strong interaction ones for the benefit of the interpretation of the measurements. Our study exploits properties of single gluon emission matrix elements which are clearly visible if a conveniently chosen form of their representation is used. We rely also on distributions obtained from matrix element based Monte Carlo generated samples of events with two leptons and up to two additional partons in test samples. Incoming colliding protons' partons are distributed accordingly to PDFs and are strictly collinear to the corresponding beams.

Application of TauSpinner for studies on tau-lepton polarization and spin correlations in Z, W and H decays at LHC

The tau-lepton plays an important role in the physics program at LHC. Its spin can be used for separation of signal from background or in measuring properties of New Particles decaying to tau leptons. The TauSpinner package represents a tool to modify tau spin effects in any sample containing tau leptons. Generated events, featuring taus produced from intermediate state W, Z, H bosons can be used as an input. The information on the polarization and spin correlations is reconstructed from the kinematics of the tau lepton(s) (nutau in case of W-mediated processes) and tau decay products. By weights, attributed on the event-by-event basis, it enables numerical evaluation and/or modification of the spin effects. We review distributions to monitor spin effects in leptonic and hadronic tau decays with up to three pions, to provide benchmarks for validation of spin content of the event sample and to visualize the tau lepton spin polarization and correlation effects. The demonstration examples for use of TauSpinner libraries, are documented. New validation methods of such an approach are provided. Other topics, like TauSpinner systematic errors or sensitivity of experimental distributions to spin, are addressed in part only. This approach is of interest for implementation of spin effects in embedded tau lepton samples, where Z to mu mu events from data of muons are replaced by simulated tau leptons. Embedding is used at LHC for estimating Z to tau tau background to H to tau tau signatures.

NA61/SHINE facility at the CERN SPS: beams and detector system

NA61/SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) is a multi-purpose experimental facility to study hadron production in hadron-proton, hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. It recorded the first physics data with hadron beams in 2009 and with ion beams (secondary 7Be beams) in 2011. NA61/SHINE has greatly profited from the long development of the CERN proton and ion sources and the accelerator chain as well as the H2 beamline of the CERN North Area. The latter has recently been modified to also serve as a fragment separator as needed to produce the Be beams for NA61/SHINE. Numerous components of the NA61/SHINE set-up were inherited from its predecessors, in particular, the last one, the NA49 experiment. Important new detectors and upgrades of the legacy equipment were introduced by the NA61/SHINE Collaboration. This paper describes the state of the NA61/SHINE facility - the beams and the detector system - before the CERN Long Shutdown I, which started in March 2013.

TauSpinner: a tool for simulating CP effects in H to tau tau decays at LHC

In this paper, we discuss application of the TauSpinner package as a simulation tool for measuring the CP state of the newly discovered Higgs boson using the transverse spin correlations in the H to tau tau decay channel. We discuss application for its main background Z/gamma* to tau tau as well. The TauSpinner package allows one to add, with the help of weights, transverse spin correlations corresponding to any mixture of scalar/pseudoscalar state, on already existing events using information from the kinematics of outgoing tau leptons and their decay products only. This procedure can be used when polarimetric vectors of the taus decays and density matrix for tau-pair production are not stored with the event sample. We concentrate on the well-defined effects for the Higgs (or Higgs-like scalar) decays, which are physically separated from the production processes. TauSpinner also allows to reintroduce (or remove) spin correlations to events from Drell-Yan Z/gamma* to tau tau process, the main background for the Higgs parity observables, again with the help of weights only. From the literature, we recall well-established observables, developed for measuring the CP of the Higgs, and use them as benchmarks for illustrating applications of the TauSpinner package. We also include a description of the code and prepared testing examples.

Universal Interface of TAUOLA Technical and Physics Documentation

Because of their narrow width, tau decays can be well separated from their production process. Only spin degrees of freedom connect these two parts of the physics process of interest for high energy collision experiments. In the following, we present a Monte Carlo algorithm which is based on that property. The interface supplements events generated by other programs, with tau decays. Effects of spin, genuine weak corrections or of new physics may be taken into account at the time when a tau decay is generated and written into an event record.

From the LHC to Future Colliders

Discoveries at the LHC will soon set the physics agenda for future colliders. This report of a CERN Theory Institute includes the summaries of Working Groups that reviewed the physics goals and prospects of LHC running with 10 to 300/fb of integrated luminosity, of the proposed sLHC luminosity upgrade, of the ILC, of CLIC, of the LHeC and of a muon collider. The four Working Groups considered possible scenarios for the first 10/fb of data at the LHC in which (i) a state with properties that are compatible with a Higgs boson is discovered, (ii) no such state is discovered either because the Higgs properties are such that it is difficult to detect or because no Higgs boson exists, (iii) a missing-energy signal beyond the Standard Model is discovered as in some supersymmetric models, and (iv) some other exotic signature of new physics is discovered. In the contexts of these scenarios, the Working Groups reviewed the capabilities of the future colliders to study in more detail whatever new physics may be discovered by the LHC. Their reports provide the particle physics community with some tools for reviewing the scientific priorities for future colliders after the LHC produces its first harvest of new physics from multi-TeV collisions.

Prospects for the Search for a Standard Model Higgs Boson in ATLAS using Vector Boson Fusion

The potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson in the mass range m_H < 2 m_Z in the vector boson fusion mode has been studied for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The characteristic signatures of additional jets in the forward regions of the detector and of low jet activity in the central region allow for an efficient background rejection. Analyses for the H -> WW and H -> tau tau decay modes have been performed using a realistic simulation of the expected detector performance. The results obtained demonstrate the large discovery potential in the H -> WW decay channel and the sensitivity to Higgs boson decays into tau-pairs in the low-mass region around 120 GeV.

Why do we need higher order fully exclusive Monte Carlo generator for Higgs boson production from heavy quark fusion at LHC?

In this paper we argue that having available higher order fully exclusive Monte Carlo generator for Higgs boson production from heavy quark fusion will be mandatory for data analysis at LHC. The H to tau tau channel, a key for early discovery of the Higgs boson in the MSSM scenario, is discussed. With simplified example and for mH = 120 GeV we show, that depending on choice among presently available approaches, used for simulation of Higgs boson production from b bbar H Yukawa coupling, final acceptance for the signal events being reconstructed inside mass window may differ by a factor of 3. The spread is even larger (up to a factor of 10) for other production mechanisms (promising for some regions of the MSSM parameter space). The complete analysis, which necessarily will add stringent requirements for background rejection (such as identification of b-jet or veto on b-jet) and which will require statistical combination of samples selected with different selection criteria may only enhance the uncertainty.

Prospects for Observing an Invisibly Decaying Higgs Boson in the t anti-t H Production at the LHC

The prospects for observing an invisibly decaying Higgs boson in the t anti-t H production at LHC are discussed. An isolated lepton, reconstructed hadronic top-quark decay, two identified b-jets and large missing transverse energy are proposed as the final state signature for event selection. Only the Standard Model backgrounds are taken into account. It is shown that the t anti-t Z, t anti-t W, b anti-b Z and b anti-b W backgrounds can individually be suppressed below the signal expectation. The dominant source of background remains the t anti-t production. The key for observability will be an experimental selection which allows further suppression of the contributions from the t anti-t events with one of the top-quarks decaying into a tau lepton. Depending on the details of the final analysis, an excess of the signal events above the Standard Model background of about 10% to 100% can be achieved in the mass range m_H= 100-200 GeV.

The tauola-photos-F environment for the TAUOLA and PHOTOS packages, release II

We present the system for versioning two packages: the TAUOLA of tau-lepton decay and PHOTOS for radiative corrections in decays. The following features can be chosen in an automatic or semi-automatic way: (1) format of the common block HEPEVT; (2) version of the physics input (for TAUOLA): as published, as initialized by the CLEO collaboration, as initialized by the ALEPH collaboration (it is suggested to use this version only with the help of the collaboration advice), new optional parametrizations of matrix elements in 4-pi decay channels; (3) type of application: stand-alone, universal interface based on the information stored in the HEPEVT common block including longitudinal spin effects in the elementary Z/gamma* -> tau+ tau- process, extended version of the standard universal interface including full spin effects in the H/A -> tau+ tau- decay, interface for KKMC Monte Carlo, (4) random number generators; (5) compiler options.
