The slope of the hadron spin-flip amplitude and the determination of ρ(s,t)

We re-examine the extraction of ρ(s,t), the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the scattering amplitude, and of the spin-flip amplitude, from the existing experimental data in the Coulomb-hadron interference region. We show that it is not possible to find reasonable assumptions about the structure of the scattering amplitude of proton-proton and proton-antiproton elastic scattering at high energy that would lead, in proton-antiproton scattering for 3.8 < p_L <6 GeV/c, to an agreement between data and an analysis based on dispersion relations.

Quantum state reconstruction using binary data from on/off photodetection

The knowledge of the density matrix of a quantum state plays a fundamental role in several fields ranging from quantum information processing to experiments on foundations of quantum mechanics and quantum optics. Recently, a method has been suggested and implemented in order to obtain the reconstruction of the diagonal elements of the density matrix exploiting the information achievable with realistic on/off detectors, e.g. silicon avalanche photo-diodes, only able to discriminate the presence or the absence of light. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the theoretical and experimental developments of the on/off method, including its extension to the reconstruction of the whole density matrix.

Forward Physics at the LHC; Elastic Scattering

The following effects in the nearly forward ("soft") region of the LHC are proposed to be investigated: 1) At small |t| the fine structure of the cone (Pomeron) shouldbe scrutinized: a) a break of the cone near $t\approx - 0.1 ~ GeV$^2, due to the two-pion threshold, and required by t-channel unitarity, is expected, and b) possible small-period oscillations between $t=0$ and the dip region. 2) In measuring the elastic $pp$ scattering and total $pp$ cross section at the LHC, the experimentalists are urged to treat the total cross section $σ_t,$ the ratio $ρ$, the forward slope $B$ and the luminosity ${\cal L}$ as free arameters, and to publish model-independent results on ${dN/{dt}}.$ 3) Of extreme interest are the details of the expected diffraction minimum in the differential cross section. Its position, expected in the interval $0.4<-t<1$ GeV$^2$ at the level of about $10^{-2} {\rm mb} \cdot$ GeV$^{-2}÷10^{-1} {\rm mb}\cdot$ GeV$^{-2}$, cannot be predicted unambiguously, and its depth, i.e. the ratio of $dσ/dt$ at the minimum to that at the subsequent maximum (about $-t=5 $GeV$^2$, which is about 5 is of great importance. 4) The expected slow-down with increasing $|t|$ of the shrinkage of the second cone (beyond the dip-bump), together with the transition from an exponential to a power decrease in $-t$, will be indicative of the transition from "soft" to "hard" physics. Explicit models are proposed to help in quantifying this transition. 5) In a number of papers a limiting behavior, or saturation of the black disc limit (BDL) was predicted. This controversial phenomenon shows that the BDL may not be the ultimate limit.

Analytical evolution of nucleon structure functions with power corrections at twist-4 and predictions for ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon cross section

In this paper we present an analytic result for the evolution in $Q^2$ of the structure functions for the neutrino-nucleon interaction, valid at twist-2 in the region of small values of the Bjorken $x$ variable and for soft non-perturbative input. In the special case of flat initial conditions, we include in the calculation also the contribution of the twist-4 gluon recombination corrections, whose effect in the evolution is explicitly determined. Finally, we estimate the resulting charged-current neutrino-nucleon total cross section and discuss its behavior at ultra-high energies.

Ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon interactions

Ultra-high energy ($E_ν>10^8 $ GeV) neutrino-nucleon total cross sections $σ^{νN}$ are estimated from a soft non-perturbative model complemented by an approximate QCD evolution, explicitly calculated. The resulting asymptotic energy behavior of the neutrino-nucleon charged-current total cross section is derived analytically and predictions concerning the observation of ultra-high energy neutrinos in future experiments are presented.

Coulomb Interference in High-Energy pp and pbar p Scattering

An analysis of the Coulombic amplitude and its interference with the nuclear amplitude which is driven by the three-component Pomeron is presented. It is shown that different approaches towards the Coulomb phase evaluation give approximately uniform result at all energies and the difference is negligible at RHIC and LHC energies. We show that the use of the amplitude which was fitted to accomodate nucleon data only (in the region 0.01 < |t| < 14.5 (GeV^2)) combined with the Coulomb amplitude, reproduces the existing data in the Coulomb interference domain quite accurately without any adjustement of the parameters. As a consequence, we predict the differential cross section in the region of the Coulomb nucleon interference for both RHIC and LHC energies.

Conclusive tests of local realism and pseudoscalar mesons

Many beautiful experiments have been addressed to test standard quantum mechanics against local realistic models. Even if a strong evidence favouring standard quantum mechanics is emerged, a conclusive experiment is still lacking, because of low detection efficiencies. Recently, experiments based on pseudoscalar mesons have been proposed as a way for obtaining a conclusive experiment. In this paper, we investigate if this result can effectively be obtained. Our conclusions, based on a careful analysis of the proposed set ups, are that this will not be possible due to intrinsic limitations of these kind of experiments.

Anomalies in Diffractive Electroproduction of 2S Radially Excited Light Vector Mesons at HERA

We present the color dipole phenomenology of diffractive photo- and electroproduction $γ^{*} N\to V(V') N$ of vector mesons ($V(1S) = ϕ^0, ω^0, ρ^0, J/Ψ, Υ$) and their radial excitations ($V'(2S) = ϕ', ω', ρ', Ψ', Υ'$). The main emphasis is related to light vector mesons. We discuss how the energy dependence of the color dipole cross section in conjuction with the node of the radial wave function of the $2S$ states can lead to an anomalous $Q^2$ and energy dependence of diffractive production of $V'(2S)$ vector mesons. The color dipole model predictions for $V(1S)$ light vector meson production are compared with the experimental data from the EMC, NMC, ZEUS and H1 collaborations.

The Pomeron in Elastic and Deep Inelastic Scattering

We discuss some properties of the Pomeron in high energy elastic hadron-hadron and deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering. A number of issues concerning the nature and the origin of the Pomeron are briefly recalled here. The novelty in this paper resides essentially in its presentation; we strive at discussing all these various issues in the following unifying perspective : it is our contention that the Pomeron is one and the same in all reactions. Various examples will be provided illustrating why we do not believe that one should invoke additional tools to describe the data. For pedagogical convenience, we list below the topics to be covered in the following. -- 1. Introduction. How many Pomerons? -- 2. The Pomeron in the $S$-matrix theory -- 3. The Pomeron in QCD -- 4. The Pomeron in deep inelastic scattering -- 5. The Pomeron structure -- 6. (Temporary?) Conclusions
