Resonance production in Pomeron-Pomeron collisions at the LHC

A Regge pole model for Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section in the resonance region $\sqrt{M^2}\le$ 5 GeV is presented. The cross section is saturated by direct-channel contributions from the Pomeron as well as from two different $f$ trajectories, accompanied by the isolated f$_0(500)$ resonance which dominates the $\sqrt{M^{2}}\lesssim 1$ GeV region. A slowly varying background is taken into account. The calculated Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section cannot be measured directly, but is an essential part of central diffractive processes. In preparation of future calculations of central resonance production at the hadron level, and corresponding measurements at the LHC, we normalize the Pomeron-Pomeron cross section at large masses $σ_{t}^{PP} (\sqrt{M^2}\rightarrow \infty) \approx$ 1 mb as suggested by QCD-motivated estimates.

Resonance production in Pomeron-Pomeron collisions at the LHC

A model for Pomeron-Pomeron total cross section in the resonance region $\sqrt{M^{2}} \le$ 5 GeV is presented. This model is based on Regge poles from the Pomeron and two different $f$ trajectories, and includes the isolated f$_{0}(500)$ resonance in the region $\sqrt{M^{2}}\lesssim 1$ GeV. A slowly varying background is included. The presented Pomeron-Pomeron cross section is not directly measurable, but is an essential ingredient for calculating exclusive resonance production at the LHC.

Discontinuites of BFKL amplitudes and the BDS ansatz

We perform an examination of discontinuities of multiple production amplitudes, which are required for further development of the BFKL approach. It turns out that the discontinuities of 2 $\to$ 2 + n amplitudes obtained in the BFKL approach contradict to the BDS ansatz for amplitudes with maximal helicity violation in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with large number of colours starting with n = 2. Explicit expressions for the discontinuities of the 2 $\to$ 3 and 2 $\to$ 4 amplitudes in the invariant mass of pairs of produced gluons are obtained in the planar N=4 SYM in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. These expressions can be used for checking the conjectured duality between the light-like Wilson loops and the MHV amplitudes.

On Hermitian separability of the next-to-leading order BFKL kernel for the adjoint representation of the gauge group in the planar N = 4 SYM

We analyze a modification of the BFKL kernel for the adjoint representation of the colour group in the maximally supersymmetric (N=4) Yang-Mills theory in the limit of a large number of colours, related to the modification of the eigenvalues of the kernel suggested by S. Bondarenko and A. Prygarin in order to reach the Hermitian separability of the eigenvalues. We restore the modified kernel in the momentum space. It turns out that the modification is related only to the real part of the kernel and that the correction to the kernel can not be presented by a single analytic function in the entire momentum region, which contradicts the known properties of the kernel.

Color screening, absorption and $σ_{tot}^{pp}$ at LHC

We show that a growth of the proton-proton total cross section with energy can be entirely attributed to the purely perturbative mechanism. The infrared regularization at rather short distances, $R_c\simeq 0.3$ fm, allows to extend the BFKL technique from deep inelastic to hadron-hadron scattering. With the account of the absorption corrections our results are in agreement with the LHC data on $σ_{tot}^{pp}$.

Reggeometry of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and exclusive vector meson production (VMP) at HERA

A Reggeometric (Regge+Geometry) model, based on the observed proportionality between the forward slope of the differential cross section and the interaction radius, the latter depending on virtuality Q2 of the incoming virtual photon and on the mass M 2 of the produced particle, is constructed. The objective of this study is the dependence of the Regge-pole amplitude on the virtuality Q2 and masses of the external particles, which remains an open problem for the theory. The present analysis is based on the HERA data on Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and exclusive diffractive Vector Meson Production (VMP). We treat each class of reactions separately, anticipating a further study that will include both a soft and a hard component of the unique pomeron.

Unifying "soft" and "hard" diffractive exclusive vector meson production and deeply virtual Compton scattering

A Pomeron model applicable to both "`soft" and "hard" processes is suggested and tested against the high-energy data from virtual photon-induced reactions. The Pomeron is universal, containing two terms, a "soft" and a "hard" one, whose relative weight varies with $\widetilde {Q^2}=Q^2+M_V^2$, where $Q^2$ is the virtuality of the incoming photon and $M_V$ is the mass of the produced vector particle. With a small number of adjustable parameters, the model fits all available data on vector meson production and deeply virtual Compton scattering from HERA. Furthermore, we attempt to apply the model to hadron-induced reactions, by using high-energy data from proton-proton scattering.

BFKL, BK and the Infrared

The perturbative non-linear (NL) effects in the small-$x$ evolution of the gluon densities depend crucially on the infrared (IR) regularization. The IR regulator, $R_c$, is determined by the scale of the non-perturbative fluctuations of QCD vacuum. From the instanton models and from the lattice $R_c\sim 0.3$ fm. For perturbative gluons with the propagation length $R_c= 0.26$ fm the linear BFKL gives a good description of the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ in a wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$. The NL effects turn out to be rather weak and amount to the 10% correction to $F_2(x,Q^2)$ for $x\lsim 10^{-5}$. Much more pronounced NL effects were found in the non-linear model, described in the literature, with a very soft IR regularization corresponding to the IR cutoff at $\simeq Λ^{-1}_{QCD}$. The latter issue is also commented below.

BKT phase transitions in strongly coupled 3D Z(N) LGT at finite temperature

We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the phase diagram of three-dimensional Z(N) lattice gauge theories at finite temperature for N > 4. These models, in the strong coupling limit, are equivalent to a generalized version of vector Potts models in two dimension, with Polyakov loops playing the role of Z(N) spins. It is argued that the effective spin models have two phase transitions of infinite order (i.e. BKT). Using a cluster algorithm we confirm this conjecture, locate the position of the critical points and extract various critical indices.

Difference between standard and quasi-conformal BFKL kernels

As it was recently shown, the colour singlet BFKL kernel, taken in Moebius representation in the space of impact parameters, can be written in quasi-conformal shape, which is unbelievably simple compared with the conventional form of the BFKL kernel in momentum space. It was also proved that the total kernel is completely defined by its Moebius representation. In this paper we calculated the difference between standard and quasi-conformal BFKL kernels in momentum space and discovered that it is rather simple. Therefore we come to the conclusion that the simplicity of the quasi-conformal kernel is caused mainly by using the impact parameter space.

Exclusive diffractive production of real photons and vector mesons in a factorized Regge-pole model with non-linear Pomeron trajectory

Exclusive diffractive production of real photons and vector mesons in ep collisions has been studied at HERA in a wide kinematic range. Here we present and discuss a Regge-type model of real photon production (Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering), as well as production of vector mesons (VMP) treated on the same footing by using an extension of a factorized Regge-pole model proposed earlier. The model has been fitted to the HERA data. Despite the very small number of the free parameters, the model gives a satisfactory description of the experimental data, both for the total cross section as a function of the photon virtuality Q2 or the energy W in the center of mass of the gamma\star-p system, and the differential cross sections as a function of the squared four-momentum transfer t with fixed Q2 and W.

Non-linear BFKL dynamics: color screening vs. gluon fusion

A feasible mechanism of unitarization of amplitudes of deep inelastic scattering at small values of Bjorken $x$ is the gluon fusion. However, its efficiency depends crucially on the vacuum color screening effect which accompanies the multiplication and the diffusion of BFKL gluons from small to large distances. From the fits to lattice data on field strength correlators the propagation length of perturbative gluons is $R_c\simeq 0.2-0.3$ fermi. The probability to find a perturbative gluon with short propagation length at large distances is suppressed exponentially. It changes the pattern of (dif)fusion dramatically. The magnitude of the fusion effect appears to be controlled by the new dimensionless parameter $\sim R_c^2/8B$, with the diffraction cone slope $B$ standing for the characteristic size of the interaction region. It should slowly $\propto 1/\ln Q^2$ decrease at large $Q^2$. Smallness of the ratio $R_c^2/8B$ makes the non-linear effects rather weak even at lowest Bjorken $x$ available at HERA. We report the results of our studies of the non-linear BFKL equation which has been generalized to incorporate the running coupling and the screening radius $R_c$ as the infrared regulator.

Phase transitions in strongly coupled 3d Z(N) lattice gauge theories at finite temperature

We perform an analytical and numerical study of the phase transitions in three-dimensional Z(N) lattice gauge theories at finite temperature for N>4 exploiting equivalence of these models with a generalized version of the two-dimensional vector Potts models in the limit of vanishing spatial coupling. In this limit the Polyakov loops play the role of Z(N) spins. The effective couplings of these two-dimensional spin models are calculated explicitly. It is argued that the effective spin models have two phase transitions of BKT type. This is confirmed by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Using a cluster algorithm we locate the position of the critical points and study the critical behavior across both phase transitions in details. In particular, we determine various critical indices, compute the helicity modulus, the average action and the specific heat. A scaling formula for the critical points with N is proposed.

The phase transitions in 2D Z(N) vector models for N>4

We investigate both analytically and numerically the renormalization group equations in 2D Z(N) vector models. The position of the critical points of the two phase transitions for N>4 is established and the critical index ν is computed. For N=7, 17 the critical points are located by Monte Carlo simulations and some of the corresponding critical indices are determined. The behavior of the helicity modulus is studied for N=5, 7, 17. Using these and other available Monte Carlo data we discuss the scaling of the critical points with N and some other open theoretical problems.

Connection between complete and Moebius forms of gauge invariant operators

We study the connection between complete representations of gauge invariant operators and their Moebius representations acting in a limited space of functions. The possibility to restore the complete representations from Moebius forms in the coordinate space is proven and a method of restoration is worked out. The operators for transition from the standard BFKL kernel to the quasi-conformal one are found both in Moebius and total representations.

Heavy quark currents in ultra-high energy neutrino interactions

We discuss heavy quark contributions to the neutrino-nucleon total cross section at very high energies, well above the real top production threshold. The top-bottom weak current is found to generate strong left-right asymmetry of neutrino-nucleon interactions. We separate contributions of different helicity states and make use of the $\bkappa$-factorization to derive simple and practically useful formulas for the left-handed ($F_L$) and right-handed ($F_R$) components of the conventional structure function $2xF_3=F_L-F_R$ in terms of the integrated gluon density. We show that $F_L\gg F_R$ and, consequently, $xF_3\approx F_T$, where $F_T$ is the transverse structure function. The conventional structure function $F_2=F_S+F_T$ at $Q^2\ll m_t^2$ appears to be dominated by its scalar (also known as longitudinal) component $F_S$ and the hierarchy $F_S\gg F_L\gg F_R$ arises naturally. We evaluate the total neutrino-nucleon cross section at ultra-high energies within the color dipole BFKL formalism.

UHE Neutrinos: Fusing gluons within diffraction cone

Currently available estimates of the gluon-fusion effect in ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon interactions as well as in DIS on protons suffer from uncertainty in defining the scattering profile function $Γ(b)$. Indeed, the area, $S$, in the impact parameter space populated with interacting gluons varies by a factor of $4 - 5$ from one analysis to another. To get rid of uncertainties we specify the dipole-nucleon partial-wave amplitude $Γ(b)$ which meets the restrictions imposed by both the total dipole-nucleon cross section and the small angle elastic scattering amplitude. The area $S$ becomes a well defined quantity proportional to the diffraction cone slope. We solve numerically the non-linear color dipole BFKL equation and evaluate the UHE neutrino-nucleon total cross section. Our finding is that the saturation is a rather weak effect, $\lsim 25%$, up to $E_ν\sim 10^{12}$ GeV.

Current non-conservation effects in ultra-high energy neutrino interactions

The overall hardness scale of the ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon interactions is usually estimated as $Q^2\sim m_W^2$. The effect of non-conservation of weak currents pushes this scale up to the top quark mass squared and changes dynamics of the scattering process. The Double Leading Log Approximation provides simple and numerically accurate formula for the top-bottom contribution to the total cross section $σ^{νN}$. Corresponding correction to $σ^{νN}$ appears to be numerically large. It is comparable with the leading contribution evaluated in the massless quark approximation.

Exclusive J/Psi photo- and electroproduction in a dual model

Exclusive J/Ψphoto- and electroproduction is studied in the framework of the analytic S-matrix theory. The differential and integrated elastic cross sections are calculated using the Modified Dual Amplitude with Mandelstam Analyticity (M-DAMA) model. The model is applied to the description of the available experimantal data and proves to be valid in a wide region of the kinematical variables s, t, and Q^2. Our amplitude can be used also as a universal background parametrization for the extraction of tiny resonance signals.

Forward Physics at the LHC; Elastic Scattering

The following effects in the nearly forward ("soft") region of the LHC are proposed to be investigated: 1) At small |t| the fine structure of the cone (Pomeron) shouldbe scrutinized: a) a break of the cone near $t\approx - 0.1 ~ GeV$^2, due to the two-pion threshold, and required by t-channel unitarity, is expected, and b) possible small-period oscillations between $t=0$ and the dip region. 2) In measuring the elastic $pp$ scattering and total $pp$ cross section at the LHC, the experimentalists are urged to treat the total cross section $σ_t,$ the ratio $ρ$, the forward slope $B$ and the luminosity ${\cal L}$ as free arameters, and to publish model-independent results on ${dN/{dt}}.$ 3) Of extreme interest are the details of the expected diffraction minimum in the differential cross section. Its position, expected in the interval $0.4<-t<1$ GeV$^2$ at the level of about $10^{-2} {\rm mb} \cdot$ GeV$^{-2}÷10^{-1} {\rm mb}\cdot$ GeV$^{-2}$, cannot be predicted unambiguously, and its depth, i.e. the ratio of $dσ/dt$ at the minimum to that at the subsequent maximum (about $-t=5 $GeV$^2$, which is about 5 is of great importance. 4) The expected slow-down with increasing $|t|$ of the shrinkage of the second cone (beyond the dip-bump), together with the transition from an exponential to a power decrease in $-t$, will be indicative of the transition from "soft" to "hard" physics. Explicit models are proposed to help in quantifying this transition. 5) In a number of papers a limiting behavior, or saturation of the black disc limit (BDL) was predicted. This controversial phenomenon shows that the BDL may not be the ultimate limit.

Predictions for high-energy pp and \bar pp scattering from a finite sum of gluon ladders

An eikonalized elastic proton-proton and proton-antiproton scattering amplitude F(s,t), calculated from QCD as a finite sum of gluon ladders, is compared with the existing experimental data on the total cross section and the ratio ρ(s,0)=Re F(s,0)/Im F(s,0) of the real part to the imaginary part of the forward amplitude. Predictions for the expected LHC energies are given.

Universality and massive excitations in 3d 3-state Potts model

The mass spectrum of the 3d 3-state Potts model is considered in the broken phase (a) near the second order Ising critical point in the temperature-magnetic field plane and (b) near the weakly first order transition point at zero magnetic field. In the case (a), the mass spectrum is compared with the prediction from universality of mass ratios in the 3d Ising class; in the case (b) a mass ratio is determined to be compared with the corresponding one in the spectrum of screening masses of the (3+1)d SU(3) pure gauge theory at finite temperature in the deconfined phase near the transition.

QED$_3$ on a space-time lattice: compact versus noncompact formulation

We study quantum electrodynamics in a (2+1)-dimensional space-time with two flavors of dynamical fermions by numerical simulations on the lattice. We discretize the theory using both the compact and the noncompact formulations and analyze the behavior of the chiral condensate and of the monopole density in the finite lattice regime as well as in the continuum limit. By comparing the results obtained with the two approaches, we draw some conclusions about the possible equivalence of the two lattice formulations in the continuum limit.

Analytical evolution of nucleon structure functions with power corrections at twist-4 and predictions for ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon cross section

In this paper we present an analytic result for the evolution in $Q^2$ of the structure functions for the neutrino-nucleon interaction, valid at twist-2 in the region of small values of the Bjorken $x$ variable and for soft non-perturbative input. In the special case of flat initial conditions, we include in the calculation also the contribution of the twist-4 gluon recombination corrections, whose effect in the evolution is explicitly determined. Finally, we estimate the resulting charged-current neutrino-nucleon total cross section and discuss its behavior at ultra-high energies.

The Bootstrap Conditions for the Gluon Reggeization

Compatibility of gluon Reggeization with s-channel unitarity requires the vertices of the Reggeon interactions to satisfy a series of bootstrap conditions. In order to derive, in the next-to-leading order (NLO), conditions related to the gluon production amplitudes, we calculate the s-channel discontinuities of these amplitudes and compare them with those required by the Reggeization. It turns out that these conditions include the so called strong bootstrap conditions for the kernel and for the impact factors of scattering particles, which were proposed earlier without derivation, and recently were proved to be satisfied. Besides this, there is a new bootstrap condition, which relates a number of Reggeon vertices and the gluon trajectory.

Ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon interactions

Ultra-high energy ($E_ν>10^8 $ GeV) neutrino-nucleon total cross sections $σ^{νN}$ are estimated from a soft non-perturbative model complemented by an approximate QCD evolution, explicitly calculated. The resulting asymptotic energy behavior of the neutrino-nucleon charged-current total cross section is derived analytically and predictions concerning the observation of ultra-high energy neutrinos in future experiments are presented.

The quark part of the non-forward BFKL kernel and the ``bootstrap'' for the gluon Reggeization

We calculate the quark part of the kernel of the generalized non-forward BFKL equation at non-zero momentum transfer $t$ in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. Along with the quark contribution to the gluon Regge trajectory, this part includes pieces coming from the quark-antiquark production and from the quark contribution to the radiative corrections in one-gluon production in the Reggeon-Reggeon collisions. The results obtained can be used for an arbitrary representation of the colour group in the $t-$channel. Using the results for the adjoint representation, we demonstrate explicitly the fulfillment of the ``bootstrap'' condition for the gluon Reggeization in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation in the part concerning the quark contribution.

Photoproduction of Heavy Vector Mesons at HERA -- A Testfield for Diffraction

Exclusive diffractive photoproduction of heavy vector mesons (V=phi, J/psi and Upsilon) at HERA is studied in a model employing a dipole Pomeron exchange (P) with an inelastic gamma-P-V vertex. The model is fitted to the data on dsigma/dt, B and elastic sigma for Q^2=0 and beyond the threshold region. The elastic cross sections for both phi and J/psi photoproduction show a moderate increase within the HERA energy region. The flattening of the slope B(s) (little or no shrinkage) for J/psi is not correlated with the slope of the Pomeron trajectory. Estimates for Upsilon photoproduction at HERA are given.

The Effective String of 3D Z_2 Gauge Theory as a c=1 compactified CFT

We report on a high precision Montecarlo test of the three dimensional Ising gauge model at finite temperature. The string tension $σ$ is extracted from the expectation values of correlations of Polyakov lines. Agreement with the string tension extracted from Wilson loops is found only if the quantum fluctuations of the flux tube are properly taken into account. The central charge of the underlying conformal field theory is c=1.
