Two-Gap Time Reversal Symmetry Breaking Superconductivity in Non-Centrosymmetric LaNiC2

We report a $μ$SR investigation of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor (LaNiC$_2$) in single crystal form. Compared to previous $μ$SR studies of non-centrosymmetric superconducting polycrystalline and powder samples, the unambiguous orientation of single crystals enables a simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex core size from measurements that probe the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state. The magnetic field dependence of these quantities unambiguously demonstrates the presence of two nodeless superconducting energy gaps. In addition, we detect weak internal magnetic fields in the superconducting phase, confirming earlier $μ$SR evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting state. Our results suggest that Cooper pairing in LaNiC$_2$ is characterized by the same interorbital equal-spin pairing model introduced to describe the pairing state in the centrosymmetric superconductor LaNiGa$_2$.

Quantum oscillations in heavy fermion compound YbPtBi

We present quantum oscillations observed in the heavy fermion compound YbPtBi in magnetic fields far beyond its field-tuned, quantum critical point. Quantum oscillations are observed in magnetic fields as low as 60 kOe at 60 mK and up to temperatures as high as 3 K, which confirms the very high quality of the samples as well as the small effective mass of conduction carriers far from the quantum critical point. Although the electronic specific heat coefficient of YbPtBi reaches ~ 7.4 J/mol K2 in zero field, which is one of the highest effective mass value among heavy fermion systems, it is suppressed quickly by applied magnetic field. The quantum oscillations were used to extract the quasiparticle effective masses of the order of the bare electron mass, which is consistent with the behavior observed in specific heat measurements. Such a small effective masses at high fields can be understood by considering the suppression of Kondo screening.

Thermoelectric power of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, 0\leqx\leq0.05, and Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2, (0\leqx\leq0.171)

Temperature-dependent, in-plane, thermoelectric power data are presented for single crystals of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, 0\leqx\leq0.05, and Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2, (0\leqx\leq0.171). Given that previous thermoelectric power and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 delineated a rather large Co-concentration range for Lifshitz transitions to occur, and the underdoped side of the phase diagram is poorly explored, new measurements of thermoelectric power on tightly spaced concentrations of Co, 0\leqx\leq0.05, were carried out. The data suggest evidence of a Lifshitz transition, but instead of a discontinuous jump in thermoelectric power between 0\leqx\leq0.05, a more gradual evolution in the S(T) plots as x is increased was observed. The thermoelectric power data of Ba(Fe1-xRhx)2As2 show very similar behavior to that of Co substituted BaFe2As2. The previously outlined T - x phase diagrams for both systems are further confirmed by these thermoelectric power data.

Physical and magnetic properties of Ba(Fe_(1-x)Mn_x)_2As_2 single crystals

Single crystals of Ba(Fe_(1-x)Mn_x)_2As_2, 0<x<0.148, have been grown and characterized by structural, magnetic, electrical transport and thermopower measurements. Although growths of single crystals of Ba(Fe_(1-x)Mn_x)_2As_2 for the full 0<=x<=1 range were made, we find evidence for phase separation (associated with some form of immiscibility) starting for x>0.1-0.2. Our measurements show that whereas the structural/magnetic phase transition found in pure BaFe_2As_2 at 134 K is initially suppressed by Mn substitution, superconductivity is not observed at any substitution level. Although the effect of hydrostatic pressure up to 20 kbar in the parent BaFe_2As_2 compound is to suppress the structural/magnetic transition at the approximate rate of 0.9 K/kbar, the effects of pressure and Mn substitution in the x=0.102 compound are not cumulative. Phase diagrams of transition temperature versus substitution concentration, x, based on electrical transport, magnetization and thermopower measurements have been constructed and compared to those of the Ba(Fe_(1-x)TM_x)_2As_2 (TM=Co and Cr) series.
