Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$(Co$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$)IrO$_6$ double perovskite

In this work, we report the synthesis and investigation of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$(Co$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$)IrO$_6$. Our polycrystalline sample forms as a single-phase double perovskite in monoclinic $P2_{1}/n$ space group. Co and Ir are most likely in bivalent and tetravalent oxidation states, respectively, while Mossbauer spectroscopy indicates that Fe is in a trivalent state. The ac and dc magnetization data suggest a ferrimagnetic behavior resulting from the presence of two antiferromagnetic sublattices at Co/Fe and Ir sites. The large coercive field H_C $\simeq$ 32 kOe observed at 10 K, comparable to that of other double perovskites of interest for hard magnets, is discussed in terms of the structural distortion and the spin and orbital magnetic moments of the transition metal ions.

The spontaneous exchange bias effect in La2-xCaxCoMnO6 series

Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of polycrystalline La2-xCaxCoMnO6 (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.75) compounds are investigated by x-ray diffraction and magnetometry. All the samples have an orthorhombic structure and show a slight decrease in the unit cell with Ca-doping. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements reveal a complex magnetic behavior with two ferromagnetic transitions. These transitions are ascribed to Co2+--Mn4+ and Co3+--Mn3+ couplings and suggest the presence of additional antiferromagnetic couplings in these disordered compounds. Field-dependent magnetization curves, measured after cooling the samples in a zero external magnetic field, reveal the spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) effect for the Ca-doped samples. The strengthening of the uncompensated magnetic coupling at the interfaces, caused by the increased antiferromagnetic phase, explains the increase of SEB with increasing the Ca-content.

A phenomenological model for the spontaneous exchange bias effect

In this work we propose an alternative model to explain the spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) effect observed in spin glass (SG)-like systems. As in a previously proposed model (Ref. 1), it is based on the unconventional dynamics of the SG-like moments at the magnetic hysteresis cycle. However, using a reliable estimate of the amount of SG-spins that are relaxing during the cycle, the new model can correctly describe the changes in the SEB observed for measurements performed at different temperatures and different maximum applied fields.

Possible quantum fluctuations in the vicinity of the quantum critical point of $\mathbf{(Sr, Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$ revealed by high-energy X-ray diffraction study

We explore the evolution of the structural phase transition of $\rm{(Sr, Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$, a model system to study the interplay between structural quantum criticality and superconductivity, by means of high-energy x-ray diffraction measurements at high pressures and low temperatures. Our results confirm a rapid suppression of the superlattice transition temperature $T^*$ against pressure, which extrapolates to zero at a critical pressure of $\approx 1.79(4)$ GPa. The temperature evolution of the superlattice Bragg peak in $\rm{Ca_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$ reveals a drastic decrease of the intensity and an increase of the linewidth when $T \rightarrow 0$ K and $p \rightarrow p_c$. Such anomaly is likely associated to the emergence of quantum fluctuations that disrupt the formation of long-range superlattice modulation. The revisited temperature-pressure phase diagram of $\rm{(Sr, Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$ thus highlights the intertwined nature of the distinct order parameters present in this system and demonstrates some similarities between this family and the unconventional superconductors.

The effect of structural and magnetic disorder on the 3$d$-5$d$ exchange interactions of La$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$CoIrO$_{6}$

The delicate balance between spin-orbit coupling, Coulomb repulsion and crystalline electric field interactions observed in Ir-based oxides is usually manifested as exotic magnetic behavior. Here we investigate the evolution of the exchange coupling between Co and Ir for partial La substitution by Ca in La$_{2}$CoIrO$_6$. A great advantage of the use of Ca$^{2+}$ as replacement for La$^{3+}$ is the similarity of its ionic radii. Thus, the observed magnetic changes can more easily be associated to electronic variations. A thorough investigation of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the La$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$CoIrO$_6$ system was carried out by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR), AC and DC magnetization, XAS, XMCD, Raman spectroscopy, electrical resistivity and dielectric permittivity. Our XAS results show that up to 25% of Ca substitution at the La site results in the emergence of Co$^{3+}$, possibly in high spin state, while the introduction of larger amount of Ca leads to the increase of Ir valence. The competing magnetic interactions resulting from the mixed valences lead to a coexistence of a magnetically ordered and an emerging spin glass (SG) state for the doped samples. Our $μ$SR results indicate that for La$_{2}$CoIrO$_6$ a nearly constant fraction of a paramagnetic (PM) phase persists down to low temperature, possibly related to the presence of a small amount of Ir$^{3+}$ and to the anti-site disorder at Co/Ir sites. For the doped compounds the PM phase freezes below 30 K, but there is still some dynamics associated with the SG. The dielectric data obtained for the parent compound and the one with 25% of Ca-doping indicate a possible magnetodielectric effect, which is discussed in terms of the electron hopping between the TM ions, the anti-site disorder and the distorted crystalline structure.

Unveiling charge density wave quantum phase transitions by x-ray diffraction

We investigate the thermal-driven charge density wave (CDW) transition of two cubic superconducting intermetallic systems Lu(Pt1-xPdx)2In and (Sr1-xCax)3Ir4Sn13 by means of x-ray diffraction technique. A detailed analysis of the CDW modulation superlattice peaks as function of temperature is performed for both systems as the CDW transition temperature T_CDW is suppressed to zero by an non-thermal control parameter. Our results indicate an interesting crossover of the classical thermal-driven CDW order parameter critical exponent from a three-dimensional universality class to a mean-field tendency, as T_CDW vanishes. Such behavior might be associated with presence of quantum fluctuations which influences the classical second-order phase transition, strongly suggesting the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) at T_CDW = 0. This also provides experimental evidence that the effective dimensionality exceeds its upper critical dimension due to a quantum phase transition.

Compensation temperatures and exchange bias in La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6

We report on the study of magnetic properties of the La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6 double perovskite. Via ac magnetic susceptibility we have observed evidence of weak ferromagnetism and reentrant spin glass behavior on an antiferromagnetic matrix. Regarding the magnetic behavior as a function of temperature, we have found that the material displays up to three inversions of its magnetization, depending on the appropriate choice of the applied magnetic field. At low temperature the material exhibit exchange bias effect when it is cooled in the presence of a magnetic field. Also, our results indicate that this effect may be observed even when the system is cooled at zero field. Supported by other measurements and also by electronic structure calculations, we discuss the magnetic reversals and spontaneous exchange bias effect in terms of magnetic phase separation and magnetic frustration of Ir4+ ions located between the antiferromagnetically coupled Co ions.

Pressure and chemical substitution effects in the local atomic structure of BaFe2As2

The effects of K and Co substitutions and quasi-hydrostatic applied pressure (P<9 GPa) in the local atomic structure of BaFe2As2, Ba(Fe{0.937}Co{0.063})2As2 and Ba{0.85}K{0.15}Fe2As2 superconductors were investigated by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in the As K absorption edge. The As-Fe bond length is found to be slightly reduced (<~ 0.01 Angstroms) by both Co and K substitutions, without any observable increment in the corresponding Debye Waller factor. Also, this bond is shown to be compressible (k = 3.3(3)x10^{-3} GPa^{-1}). The observed contractions of As-Fe bond under pressure and chemical substitutions are likely related with a reduction of the local Fe magnetic moments, and should be an important tuning parameter in the phase diagrams of the Fe-based superconductors.

Probing the localized to itinerant behavior of the 4f electron in CeIn3-xSnx by Gd3+ electron spin resonance

The CeIn3-xSnx cubic heavy fermion system presents an antiferromagnetic transition at T_N = 10 K, for x = 0, that decreases continuously down to 0 K upon Sn substitution at a critical concentration of x_c ~ 0.65. In the vicinity of T_N -> 0 the system shows non-Fermi liquid behavior due to antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations. For a high Sn content, x > 2.2, intermediate valence effects are present. In this work we show that Gd3+-doped electron spin resonance (ESR) probes a change in the character of the Ce 4f electron, as a function of Sn substitution. The Gd3+ ESR results indicate a transition of the Ce 4f spin behavior from localized to itinerant. Near the quantum critical point, on the antiferromagnetic side of the magnetic phase diagram, both localized and itinerant behaviors coexist.

Co-substitution effects on the Fe-valence in the BaFe2As2 superconducting compound: A study of hard x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The Fe K X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) of BaFe2-xCoxAs2 superconductors was investigated. No appreciable alteration in shape or energy position of this edge was observed with Co substitution. This result provides experimental support to previous ab initio calculations in which the extra Co electron is concentrated at the substitute site and do not change the electronic occupation of the Fe ions. Superconductivity may emerge due to bonding modifications induced by the substitute atom that weakens the spin-density-wave ground state by reducing the Fe local moments and/or increasing the elastic energy penalty of the accompanying orthorhombic distortion.

Electron spin resonance study of the LaIn3-xSnx superconducting system

The LaIn3-xSnx alloy system is composed of superconducting Pauli paramagnets. For LaIn3 the superconducting critical temperature T_c is approximately 0.7 K and it shows an oscillatory dependence as a function of Sn substitution, presenting its highest value T_c ~ 6.4 K for the LaSn3 end member. The superconducting state of these materials was characterized as being of the conventional type. We report our results for Gd3+ electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the LaIn3-xSnx compounds as a function of x. We show that the effective exchange interaction parameter J_fs between the Gd3+ 4f local moment and the s-like conduction electrons is almost unchanged by Sn substitution and observe microscopically that LaSn3 is a conventional superconductor.

Distinct high-T transitions in underdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

In contrast to the simultaneous structural and magnetic first order phase transition $T_{0}$ previously reported, our detailed investigation on an underdoped Ba$_{0.84}$K$_{0.16}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal unambiguously revealed that the transitions are not concomitant. The tetragonal ($τ$: I4/mmm) - orthorhombic ($\vartheta$: Fmmm) structural transition occurs at $T_{S}\simeq$ 110 K, followed by an adjacent antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at $T_{N}\simeq$ 102 K. Hysteresis and coexistence of the $τ$ and $\vartheta$ phases over a finite temperature range observed in our NMR experiments confirm the first order character of the structural transition and provide evidence that both $T_{S}$ and $T_{N}$ are strongly correlated. Our data also show that superconductivity (SC) develops in the $\vartheta$ phase below $T_{c}$ = 20 K and coexists with long range AFM. This new observation, $T_{S}\neq T_{N}$, firmly establishes another similarity between the hole-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ via K substitution and the electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductors.

Magnetic, thermal and transport properties of Cd doped CeIn$_3$

We have investigated the effect of Cd substitution on the archetypal heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeIn$_3$ via magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity measurements. The suppression of the Neel temperature, T$_{N}$, with Cd doping is more pronounced than with Sn. Nevertheless, a doping induced quantum critical point does not appear to be achievable in this system. The magnetic entropy at $T_N$ and the temperature of the maximum in resistivity are also systematically suppressed with Cd, while the effective moment and the Curie-Weiss temperature in the paramagnetic state are not affected. These results suggest that Cd locally disrupts the AFM order on its neighboring Ce moments, without affecting the valence of Ce. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the specific heat below $T_N$ is not consistent with 3D magnons in pure as well as in Cd-doped CeIn$_3$, a point that has been missed in previous investigations of CeIn$_3$ and that has bearing on the type of quantum criticality in this system.

Cd-doping effects in Ce2MIn8 (M = Rh and Ir) heavy fermion compounds

Low temperature magnetic properties of Cd-doped Ce2MIn8 (M = Rh and Ir) single crystals are investigated. Experiments of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that Cd-doping enhances the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature from TN = 2.8 K (x = 0) to TN = 4.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2RhIn8-xCdx and induces long range AFM ordering with TN = 3.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2IrIn8-xCdx. Additionally, X-ray and neutron magnetic scattering studies showed that Cd-doped samples present below TN a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector (1/2,1/2,0). The resolved magnetic structures for both compounds indicate that the Cd-doping tends to rotate the direction of the ordered magnetic moments toward the ab-plane. This result suggests that the Cd-doping affects the Ce3+ ground state single ion anisotropy modifying the crystalline electrical field (CEF) parameters at the Ce3+ site. Indications of CEF evolution induced by Cd-doping were also found in the electrical resistivity measurements. Comparisons between our results and the general effects of Cd-doping on the related compounds CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh and Ir) confirms the claims that the Cd-doping induced electronic tuning is the main effect favoring AFM ordering in these compounds.
