Hall quantization and optical conductivity evolution with variable Berry phase in $α$-$T_3$ model

The $α$-$T_3$ model is characterized by a variable Berry phase that changes continuously from $π$ to $0$. We take advantage of this property to highlight the effects of this underlying geometrical phase on a number of physical quantities. The Hall quantization of the two limiting cases is dramatically different - a relativistic series is associated with a Berry phase of $π$ and a non-relativistic series is associated with the other limit. We study the quantization of the Hall plateaux as they continuously evolve from a relativistic to a non-relativistic regime. Additionally, we describe two physical quantities that retain knowledge of the Berry phase, in the absence of a motion-inducing magnetic field. The variable Berry phase of the $α$-$T_3$ model allows us to explicitly describe the Berry phase dependence of the dynamical longitudinal optical conductivity and of the angular scattering probability.

Magnetic properties of the $α$-$T_3$ model: magneto-optical conductivity and the Hofstadter butterfly

The $α$-$T_3$ model extrapolates between the pseudospin $S=1/2$ honeycomb lattice of graphene and the pseudospin $S=1$ dice lattice via parameter $α$. We present calculations of the magnetic properties of this hybrid pseudospin model, namely the absorptive magneto-optical conductivity and the Hofstadter butterfly spectra. In the magneto-optics curves, signatures of the hybrid system corollary a doublet structure present in the peaks, resulting from differing Landau level energies in the $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ valleys. In the Hofstadter spectra, we detail the evolution of the Hofstadter butterfly as it changes its periodicity by a factor of three as we vary between the two limiting cases of the $α$-$T_3$ model.

Antibunching correlations in a strongly coupled exciton - photonic crystal cavity system: Role of off-resonant coupling to multiple excitons

We employ a master equation approach to study the second-order quantum autocorrelation functions for up to two independent quantum dot excitons, coupled to an off-resonant cavity in a photonic crystal - single quantum dot system. For a single coupled off-resonant exciton, we observe novel oscillatory behaviour in the early-time dynamics of the cavity autocorrelation function, which leads to decreased antibunching relative to the exciton mode. With a second coupled exciton in the system, we find that the magnitude and the lifetime of these oscillations greatly increases, since the cavity is then able to exchange photons with multiple excitonic resonances. We unambiguously show that this spoils the antibunching characteristics of the cavity quasi-mode, while the autocorrelation of the first exciton is unaffected. We also examine the effects of detector time resolution and make a direct connection to a series of recent experiments.

Non-BCS behavior of optical properties across the cuprate phase diagram

The finite-frequency optical properties of the underdoped cuprates, in both the normal and superconducting state, display features which go beyond a Fermi liquid and a BCS description. We provide an understanding of these properties within a simplified analytical model, which has been evolved out of the Hubbard model and ideas based on a resonating valence bond spin liquid. We find that: 1) in underdoped samples, the missing area integrals reveal a second energy scale due to the pseudogap, not present at optimum or overdoping; 2) the real part of the optical self-energy shows a large sharp peak, that emerges with the opening of the pseudogap which exists within the superconducting state and persists in the normal state; and 3) the amount of optical spectral weight which is transferred to the condensate is greatly reduced by the presence of the pseudogap as compared to the Fermi liquid case. These non-BCS features of the superconducting state are in good qualitative agreement with a body of experimental work on different cuprate systems and provide strong evidence from optical conductivity that they are all a manifestation of the pseudogap energy scale.

Nonlinear photoluminescence spectra from a quantum dot-cavity system: Direct evidence of pump-induced stimulated emission and anharmonic cavity-QED

We investigate the power-dependent photoluminescence spectra from a strongly coupled quantum dot-cavity system using a quantum master equation technique that accounts for incoherent pumping, pure dephasing, and fermion or boson statistics. Analytical spectra at the one-photon correlation level and the numerically exact multi-photon spectra for fermions are presented. We compare to recent experiments on a quantum dot-micropiller cavity system and show that an excellent fit to the data can be obtained by varying only the incoherent pump rates in direct correspondence with the experiments. Our theory and experiments together show a clear and systematic way of studying stimulated-emission induced broadening and anharmonic cavity-QED.
