Itinerant G-type antiferromagnet SrCr2As2 studied by magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and NMR measurements

The physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr$_2$As$_2$ with body-centered tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity $ρ$, heat capacity $C_{\rm p}$, magnetic susceptibility $χ$ versus temperature~$T$ and magnetization $M$ versus applied magnetic field $H$ isotherm measurements as well as $^{75}$As and $^{53}$Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range $T$ = 1.6--900 K. From the $χ(T)$ and $^{75}$As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below $T_{\rm N}$ = 615(15) K has been determined, consistent with the previous neutron-diffraction measurements. Direct evidence of magnetic ordering of the Cr spins was shown by the observation of the $^{53}$Cr NMR spectrum under $H$ = 0. From the $χ(T)$ measurements on single-crystal SrCr$_2$As$_2$ under the two different magnetic field directions $H||ab$ and $H||c$ in the AFM state, the Cr ordered moments are shown to align along the $c$ axis in the G-type AFM state. The metallic state is directly evidenced by the $ρ$, $C_{\rm p}$, and NMR measurements, and the density of states at the Fermi energy ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ in the AFM state is estimated to be 7.53 states/eV f.u. for both spin directions which is almost twice the bare ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ estimated from first-principles calculations, suggesting an enhancement of the conduction-carrier mass by a factor of two in the AFM state. The ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ is found to be nearly constant below at least 100 K and is independent of $H$. The $ρ(T)$ is found to show $T$-linear behavior above $T_{\rm N}$ and exhibits positive curvature below $T_{\rm N}$ where significant loss of spin-disorder scattering upon magnetic ordering is observed.

Possible unconventional pairing in $(\text{Ca,Sr})_{3}(\text{Ir,Rh})_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$ superconductors revealed by controlling disorder

We study the evolution of temperature-dependent resistivity with controlled point-like disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation in stoichiometric compositions of the "3-4-13" stannides, $(\text{Ca,Sr})_{3}(\text{Ir,Rh})_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$.Three of these cubic compounds exhibit a microscopic coexistence of charge-density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC), while $\text{Ca}_{3}\text{Rh}_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$ does not develop CDW order. As expected, the CDW transition temperature, $T_{\text{CDW}}$, is universally suppressed by irradiation in all three compositions. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$, behaves in a more complex manner. In $\text{Sr}_{3}\text{Rh}_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$, it increases initially in a way consistent with a direct competition of CDW and SC, but quickly saturates at higher irradiation doses. In the other three compounds, $T_{c}$ is monotonically suppressed by irradiation. The strongest suppression is found in $\text{Ca}_{3}\text{Rh}_{4}\text{Sn}_{13}$, which does not have CDW order. We further examine this composition by measuring the London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, from which we derive the superfluid density. The result unambiguously points to a weak-coupling, full single gap, isotropic superconducting state. Therefore, we must explain two seemingly incompatible experimental observations: a single isotropic superconducting gap and a significant suppression of $T_{c}$ by non-magnetic disorder. We conduct a quantitative theoretical analysis based on a generalized Anderson theorem which points to an unconventional multiband $s^{+-}$-pairing state where the sign of the order parameter is different on one (or a small subset) of the smaller Fermi surface sheets, but remains overall fully-gapped.

Low-temperature high-frequency dynamic magnetic susceptibility of classical spin-ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

Radio-frequency (14.6 MHz) AC magnetic susceptibility, $χ^{\prime}_{AC}$, of \dytio\ was measured using a self-oscillating tunnel-diode resonator. Measurements were made with the excitation AC field parallel to the superimposed DC magnetic field up 5 T in a wide temperature range from 50 mK to 100 K. At 14.6 MHz a known broad peak of $χ^{\prime}_{AC}(T)$ from kHz - range audio-frequency measurements around 15~K for both [111] and [110] directions shifts to 45~K, continuing the Arrhenius activated behavior with the same activation energy barrier of $E_a \approx 230$~K. Magnetic field dependence of $χ^{\prime}_{AC}$ along [111] reproduces previously reported low-temperature two-in-two-out to three-in-one-out spin configuration transition at about 1~T, and an intermediate phase between 1 and 1.5~T. The boundaries of the intermediate phase show reasonable overlap with the literature data and connect at a critical endpoint of the first-order transition line, suggesting that these low-temperature features are frequency independent. An unusual upturn of magnetic susceptibility at $T \to 0$ was observed in magnetic fields between 1.5~T and 2~T for both magnetic field directions, before fully polarized configuration sets in above 2~T.

Electron irradiation effects on superconductivity in PdTe$_2$: an application of a generalized Anderson theorem

Low temperature ($\sim$ 20~K) electron irradiation with 2.5 MeV relativistic electrons was used to study the effect of controlled non-magnetic disorder on the normal and superconducting properties of the type-II Dirac semimetal PdTe$_2$. We report measurements of longitudinal and Hall resistivity, thermal conductivity and London penetration depth using tunnel-diode resonator technique for various irradiation doses. The normal state electrical resistivity follows Matthiessen rule with an increase of the residual resistivity at a rate of $\sim$0.77$ μΩ$cm/$(\textrm{C}/\textrm{cm}^2)$. London penetration depth and thermal conductivity results show that the superconducting state remains fully gapped. The superconducting transition temperature is suppressed at a non-zero rate that is about sixteen times slower than described by the Abrikosov-Gor'kov dependence, applicable to magnetic impurity scattering in isotropic, single-band $s$-wave superconductors. To gain information about the gap structure and symmetry of the pairing state, we perform a detailed analysis of these experimental results based on insight from a generalized Anderson theorem for multi-band superconductors. This imposes quantitative constraints on the gap anisotropies for each of the possible pairing candidate states. We conclude that the most likely pairing candidate is an unconventional $A_{1g}^{+-}$ state. While we cannot exclude the conventional $A_{1g}^{++}$ and the triplet $A_{1u}$, we demonstrate that these states require additional assumptions about the orbital structure of the disorder potential to be consistent with our experimental results, e.g., a ratio of inter- to intra-band scattering for the singlet state significantly larger than one. Due to the generality of our theoretical framework, we think that it will also be useful for irradiation studies in other spin-orbit-coupled multi-orbital systems.

NMR study of nematic spin fluctuations in a detwinned single crystal of underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report the experimental details of how mechanical detwinning can be implemented in tandem with high sensitivity nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and use this setup to measure the in-plane anisotropy of the spin-lattice relaxation rate in underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.048$. The anisotropy reaches a maximum of 30\% at $T_{N}$, and the recovery data reveal that the glassy behavior of the spin fluctuations present in the twinned state persist in the fully detwinned crystal. A theoretical model is presented to describe the spin-lattice relaxation rate in terms of anisotropic nematic spin fluctuations.

Origin of the Resistivity Anisotropy in the Nematic Phase of FeSe

The in-plane resistivity anisotropy is studied in strain-detwinned single crystals of FeSe. In contrast to other iron-based superconductors, FeSe does not develop long-range magnetic order below the nematic/structural transition at $T_{s}\approx$90~K. This allows for the disentanglement of the contributions to the resistivity anisotropy due to nematic and magnetic orders. Comparing direct transport and elastoresistivity measurements, we extract the intrinsic resistivity anisotropy of strain-free samples. The anisotropy peaks slightly below $T_{s}$ and decreases to nearly zero on cooling down to the superconducting transition. This behavior is consistent with a scenario in which the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in FeSe is dominated by inelastic scattering by anisotropic spin fluctuations.
