Woptic: optical conductivity with Wannier functions and adaptive k-mesh refinement

We present an algorithm for the adaptive tetrahedral integration over the Brillouin zone of crystalline materials, and apply it to compute the optical conductivity, dc conductivity, and thermopower. For these quantities, whose contributions are often localized in small portions of the Brillouin zone, adaptive integration is especially relevant. Our implementation, the woptic package, is tied into the wien2wannier framework and allows including a many-body self energy, e.g. from dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Wannier functions and dipole matrix elements are computed with the DFT package Wien2k and Wannier90. For illustration, we show DFT results for fcc-Al and DMFT results for the correlated metal SrVO$_3$.

Cubic interaction parameters for t2g Wannier orbitals

Many-body calculations for multi-orbital systems at present typically employ Slater or Kanamori interactions which implicitly assume a full rotational invariance of the orbitals, whereas the real crystal has a lower symmetry. In cubic symmetry, the low-energy $t_{2g}$ orbitals have an on-site Kanamori interaction, albeit without the constraint $U = U' + 2J$ implied by spherical symmetry ($U$: intra-orbital interaction, $U'$: inter-orbital interaction, $J$: Hund's exchange). Using maximally localized Wannier functions we show that deviations from the standard, spherically symmetric interactions are indeed significant for $5d$ orbitals ($\sim25%$ for BaOsO$_3$ ; $\sim12%$ if screening is included), but less important for $3d$ orbitals ($\sim6\%$ for SrVO$_3$; $\sim1\%$ if screened).

Unfolding the band structure of disordered solids: from bound states to high-mobility Kane fermions

Supercells are often used in ab initio calculations to model compound alloys, surfaces and defects. One of the main challenges of supercell electronic structure calculations is to recover the Bloch character of electronic eigenstates perturbed by disorder. Here we apply the spectral weight approach to unfolding the electronic structure of group III-V and II-VI semiconductor solid solutions. The illustrative examples include: formation of donor-like states in dilute Ga(PN) and associated enhancement of its optical activity, direct observation of the valence band anticrossing in dilute GaAs:Bi, and a topological band crossover in ternary (HgCd)Te alloy accompanied by emergence of high-mobility Kane fermions. The analysis facilitates interpretation of optical and transport characteristics of alloys that are otherwise ambiguous in traditional first-principles supercell calculations.

Superconductivity and charge order of confined Fermi systems

The low-temperature properties of the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model are strongly influenced by the fermion density. Away from half-filling, there is a finite-temperature transition to a phase with s-wave pairing order. However, the critical temperature is suppressed to zero at half-filling, where long-range charge-density-wave order also appears, degenerate with superconductivity. This paper presents Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the attractive Hubbard model in the presence of a confining potential V which makes the fermion density ρ inhomogeneous across the lattice. Pair correlations are shown to be large at low temperatures in regions of the trapped system with incommensurate filling, and to exhibit a minimum as the local density ρ(i) passes through one fermion per site. In this ring of ρ=1, charge order is enhanced. A comparison is made between treating V within the local-density approximation (LDA) and in an ab initio manner. It is argued that certain sharp features of the LDA result at integer filling do not survive the proximity of doped sites. The critical temperature of confined systems of fixed characteristic density is estimated.
