The 33-closure of a solvable permutation group is solvable

Let mm be a positive integer and let ΩΩ be a finite set. The mm-closure of G≤Sym⁡(Ω)G\leq\operatorname{Sym}(Ω) is the largest permutation group on ΩΩ having the same orbits as GG in its induced action on the Cartesian product ΩmΩ^m. The 11-closure and 22-closure of a solvable permutation group need not be solvable. We prove that the mm-closure of a solvable permutation group is always solvable for m≥3m\geq3.

Thin subalgebras of Lie algebras of maximal class

For every field FF which has a quadratic extension EE we show there are non-metabelian infinite-dimensional thin graded Lie algebras all of whose homogeneous components, except the second one, have dimension 22. We construct such Lie algebras as FF-subalgebras of Lie algebras MM of maximal class over EE. We characterise the thin Lie FF-subalgebras of MM generated in degree 11. Moreover we show that every thin Lie algebra LL whose ring of graded endomorphisms of degree zero of L3L^3 is a quadratic extension of FF can be obtained in this Lie algebra of maximal class over EE which are ideally rr-constrained for a positive integer rr.

Recognition of finite exceptional groups of Lie type

Let qq be a prime power and let GG be an absolutely irreducible subgroup of GLd(F)GL_d(F), where FF is a finite field of the same characteristic as $\F_q$, the field of qq elements. Assume that G≅G(q)G \cong G(q), a quasisimple group of exceptional Lie type over $\F_q$ which is neither a Suzuki nor a Ree group. We present a Las Vegas algorithm that constructs an isomorphism from GG to the standard copy of G(q)G(q). If G≇3D4(q)G \not\cong {}^3 D_4(q) with qq even, then the algorithm runs in polynomial time, subject to the existence of a discrete log oracle.
